and car ownership for this video i'm going to go through 10 of the top cars and suvs that have the best reputation when it comes to long-term reliability if you're looking for a car that's going to last you for a long time and not give you a lot of expensive repair bills and headaches make sure to stick around to the end of this video the reliability information for this list is based on reputable sources of information such as consumer reports and jd power but i'm also relying on the anecdotal evidence from mechanics who work on these cars on a regular basis when asked which cars last the longest with the least number of issues these were the cars and suvs that consistently came at the top of their list so let's get right into this list starting with number 10 the subaru forester subaru has long been known for making reliable cars and even the company loves to advertise that over 95 of the cars that they've made in the last 10 years are still on the road today the forester is one of their best selling models and this is an excellent suv if you're looking for something that's durable well-built has a good safety record and has some off-road capability too if you're buying a forester to hold on to for a long time there really isn't a lot that you need to be concerned about many buyers have bought these suvs and kept them for upwards of 10 years or longer without having to spend a lot of money on expensive repairs some of the complaints on the older cars include oil consumption and head gasket issues on the engine as well as some complaints with the cvt automatic transmission but these complaints are fairly rare on the newer models and they definitely would not steer me away from recommending a forester if you're just looking for a well-built reliable suv this one is pretty much a no-brainer let's move on to car number nine the honda civic the civic has long been well known for its amazing reputation for reliability and low cost of ownership this is an amazing choice if you're just looking for a durable long lasting car that's not going to cost you a lot of money when it comes to repairs and maintenance the civic is a really nice driving car too it's extremely well designed has amazing fuel economy and the latest versions come with plenty of great safety features that owners will appreciate there's also not a lot you need to be worried about if you're buying a civic because they have such a good reputation for reliability the only thing i would probably stay away from is the optional 1.5 liter turbocharged engine which does have a history of oil dilution and a few other serious problems that could scare a few buyers away if you don't want to worry about any serious headaches or problems then just stick with the base naturally aspirated 2 liter 4 cylinder engine which doesn't bother with the turbocharger it's simple reliable and with good maintenance it'll last a very long time now much of what makes the civic such a great car also applies to the honda fit which is another small affordable car that honda makes the company just knows what they're doing when it comes to making economical long-lasting cars and you really can't go wrong choosing between either the civic or the fit both are excellent choices now let's say you just want something that's more interesting and fun to drive well you're going to want to check out car number eight which is the mazda mx-5 when it comes to the world of sports cars not only is the mx-5 also known as the miata one of the most fun cars that you can possibly buy it's also one of the most reliable ones too mazda absolutely nailed the sports car formula by keeping the mx-5 simple and lightweight and part of that simplicity is not messing with any complicated technology that could lead to problems down the road the mx-5 uses a simple naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine matched to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive there's not a whole lot to complain about here all these things need are good basic maintenance in order to last a very long time so if you're just looking for a fun to drive sports car that's not going to cost you a fortune to run and it's going to last you a long time the mx-5 is an absolute no-brainer let's move on to car number seven the honda hr-v crossover suvs are incredibly popular with buyers and if you're looking for one on the smaller more affordable end you really can't go wrong choosing the hrv it has an amazing reputation for reliability using honda's simple 1.8 liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine with a cvt transmission in either front wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive these are well-proven components that are known to last a very long time with good basic maintenance the hrv also runs on the honda fit platform another super reliable car which is part of what makes the hrv such a good choice not only is it well built and long lasting but the hrv is also an amazingly practical suv with a surprising amount of interior space thanks to that flexible rear magic seat that can flip up giving you a ton of room or you can fold the seats perfectly flat creating an enormous cargo area now hrvs do have high resale value so they can be expensive to buy on the used car market but part of that is because a lot of buyers know how reliable and long lasting they are so if you want a no brainer small suv the hrv is the one to go for now if the hrv is just a little bit too small or even basic for you and you want something that's a little bigger more stylish and more fun to drive you're gonna want to check out number six the mazda cx-5 not only is it a slightly bigger more practical suv but it's also an extremely fun to drive one with great style a nice upscale interior and a surprisingly good reputation when it comes to reliability and build quality the cx-5 is absolutely built to last and part of that has to do with the fact that mazda like on most other models uses time-tested well-proven components that don't mess with super complicated technology the cx-5 uses a simple naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine on most trim levels and just a regular six-speed automatic transmission no dual clutch transmissions or cvts to worry about here just well-proven time-tested components the cx-5 is just a really corolla they're simple reliable and built to last much of what makes the corolla so great could also be said of the toyota yaris which is another small affordable car that toyota makes and one that also has a great reputation when it comes to reliability toyota just knows how to make a reliable small car and if you're just looking for affordable basic transportation you really can't go wrong choosing between a corolla or yaris now if you want something that's the complete opposite of cheap and basic then check out car number four on the list the lexus es350 now it's no secret that lexus is a luxury brand that has one of the best reputations on the car market when it comes to the build quality and reliability of their cars they just know how to make cars that last a very long time and are not going to break down and cause issues as they age the es350 is an amazing example of that this is basically a luxury sedan built on the same platform as the toyota avalon and camry two other cars that are really well known for their strong reliability what's great about the es350 though is that it takes the basic goodness of the camry in avalon and cranks things up a notch with even better build quality now i wouldn't have thought that's possible but the truth is is that the es is just such a reliable well-built car that can last an extremely long time the drivetrain consists of a naturally aspirated v6 engine matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission which is used on a lot of lexus and toyota models it's a great drivetrain with plenty of power and great performance but if you're looking for something that's more fuel efficient you could also go for the es 300h which uses the hybrid synergy drive system for much better fuel economy and it's just as reliable and well-built bottom line if you're looking for a luxury sedan that's built to last you really can't go wrong choosing the lexus es it is one of the best choices out there moving on to car number three on the list the toyota prius now we're starting to get into the seriously reliable cars here and the toyota prius absolutely deserves a spot near the top of the list this is the original hybrid electric car which not only proved that hybrid cars are really fuel efficient but also very reliable and built to last an extremely long time there's really not much you need to be concerned about if you buy a prius most of the parts on these cars are extremely durable and can last for hundreds of thousands of miles without having any serious issues now there is some concern around the hybrid battery packs because they can be very expensive to replace when they do eventually fail but the reality is that battery failure on a hybrid is extremely rare and when it does happen because the prius is such a common popular car there are alternatives on the market such as used batteries rebuilt batteries which cost a fraction of the price of a brand new unit from a toyota dealership so it's really nothing that you need to be concerned about i have so much confidence recommending the toyota prius as a durable long long-lasting car that you really can't do much better other than going with car number two on the list which is the lexus rx 350. yes we're back to another lexus only this time it is the best-selling model in the lexus lineup without question or hesitation the rx 350 is one of the most reliable suvs that you can possibly buy these things are absolutely legendary for being able to go the distance and rack up enormous mileage with many owners easily holding on to them for upwards of 10 to 15 years without having any serious problems if you're in the market for a luxury suv that's going to last you a very long time you cannot go wrong choosing a lexus suv and the rx is the one to go for as great as it is it still falls just a tiny bit shy of the number one spot which belongs to the toyota 4runner now the reason why i've chosen the 4runner as being the most reliable longest lasting vehicle that you can buy is for a few reasons firstly all of the qualities which make it such a great off-road suv such as its heavy-duty components and strong build construction also make it a long-lasting suv too secondly the 4runner doesn't mess with a lot of complicated modern technology and keeps things surprisingly simple for a modern suv which is the way a lot of 4runner owners like it and finally the 4runner has been using well-proven time-tested parts and hardware that have been around pretty much forever so this thing is fully debugged and sorted the naturally aspirated 4-liter v6 engine and 5 speed automatic transmission for example have been around for over a decade without any major changes which means that you know exactly what you're getting and what you're getting is rock solid reliability the 4runner might be a bit of a dinosaur but that extreme resistance to change and sticking with what's well proven and what works is what basically makes it such a reliable and long lasting suv the reality is that you really can't go wrong choosing any one of toyota's suvs including the rav4 the highlander or the larger ones like the sequoia or the land
