[Music] [Music] [Music] hello everybody good morning welcome to tips and tricks tuesdays my shirt today says every day i'm puzzling uh more like everyday i'm puzzled right what's going on in the world i'd like to know how are you my name is valentina v thank you so much for joining me on this tuesday um i hope that everyone can see me and hear me if you can please um give me an apple emoji or the word apple in the chat room so that i know that you can see me i'm trying to see if the behance chat room is working that's where i am mostly looking and hopefully it all works today and there are no issues but um yeah we'll definitely have to see so let me know if you can see me if you can hear me just give me a little looks like tim says that he can hear me loud and clear awesome yay i'm seeing some apples i don't know why i can't see myself but as long as you can see me i'm good so today our task is how do you take adobe illustrator files and convert them into things that can have motion inside of after effects but before we get into that i kind of want to know what is your familiarity with after effects i know the folks on behance may be a little bit more of a designer vibe maybe you're super familiar with illustrator not as familiar with after effects definitely let me know because that'll help me know if i'm going too fast and if i am going too fast at any point please do let me know again and i will make sure to um you know go at the right speed so today we are going to be doing a couple of projects the first one i'll pull up over here on the screen the first one is very simple we're going to be taking a super simple apple that i drew inside of um inside of illustrator on my computer and we're gonna be animating it giving it a little bit of motion adding some text super super simple um it looks complicated but trust me it's not and anyone can do it and then the second thing we're gonna do if we have time hopefully we do is we're gonna create this effect right here if you can see it let me make it bigger and this is the type of effect that i have for you today this was drawn actually on my ipad in illustrator so i'm going to show you exactly how i draw it on my ipad how i give it motion how i make it work as you can see this is a little animation of this is me very tired in quarantine and all i'm doing is trying to find what is the first outfit that i'm gonna wear when i'm out of quarantine so uh like i said i did this whole thing in uh illustrator i drew everything in illustrator and then i animated it in after effects and it might look crazy but it's actually quite simple so that's what we're doing today uh hope that you're tuning in looks like megan's in the chat room says she's been working with after effects on and off still an amateur though um let's see bruce is pretty new to after effects elevation allah says i just got a complete understanding of keyframes an hour ago after trying for three to four years wow yeah we're definitely going to be using keyframes in this but there's also things that you can use that are that are easier than keyframes as well um like animation presets that are pre-built can you reduce the gain or push it away slightly yes thank you so much for letting me know i actually did increase the gain this morning and forgot to take it down i really appreciate those comments hopefully that that is better right there um reminds me of that scene in clueless where share is picking her outfit for the day that is exactly the inspiration for this scene you pretty much nailed it this is the apocalyptic version of that scene in clueless it was originally you'll see it was originally going to be a lot more like clueless but um then i decided to go with this because i can't help but just be dark all the time so let's pop into illustrator and i'll show you what this apple looks like all right so here we are in illustrator and something that um is of note i think actually i don't think i need that layer nope is that every single thing that i have is a separate layer here and i'm not even just talking about um the apple itself right the apple the inside of it is a layer and then the outside of it the the stroke is a layer as well so i have not only created these layers but i've also named them up here hold on a sec my zoom tool is trying to play tricks on me maybe it can't zoom within oh so it can zoom there but not within uh within illustrator that's fine but you can see up here let me try to zoom in using this there we go you can see up here that i named all of the layers we have apple color apple outline this front line which is here the leaf color itself as well well as the leaf outline the leaf details the stem color and this stem outline if you're familiar with after effects it is pretty simple if you want to create outlines for anything um from a stroke so uh this is how i did it this inside of it this highlight is actually a gradient so if you go over here you can see that this is actually a whole gradient right there and what i'm going to do is all i have to do is save it so i'm just going to you know command s and then i'm going to go over into after effects so let's start a new composition none of this is here let's start a completely new composition we can turn the render queue off as well we'll go to composition new composition and we will set the parameters for what our composition will be whoop i was still zoomed in let's do that again composition new composition and we'll set the parameters so the parameters here again i wish my zoom tool has a mind of its own sometimes i can still draw at least the parameters here are oh there we go uh 3840 by 2160 which is a 16 by 9 aspect ratio we don't want it to be that crazy so we're just going to take it down to 1920 by 1080 which is still a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and we're gonna call this uh an apple a day work in progress and then this the other thing that we have to note is the frame rate so i'm just gonna do 23.976 because that's a standard frame rate duration 16 seconds that's fine and i'm gonna click ok so you can see that that composition has appeared there and it has appeared here in the timeline there's nothing in it now but we're gonna add stuff to it zoom back out please let's do it old school without having to buy extra plugins i try to do it old school but i am gonna use one plugin but it's a free plugin so don't worry about it okay so next we're gonna bring in that illustrator file and it is so easy to do so you just go to where you saved it which is this file right here called apple and all you do is you drag it in that's it now it's going to ask you what kind of file is this because it recognizes that it's an in an illustrator file so if i just say footage for example right and i press ok what's going to happen is it's going to show up just as the one file here so if i drag it in it's just the one apple there's no layers you see i open this up no layers nothing right so instead of that i'm going to delete that i don't need that delete yes i'm going to bring it in as its own composition and that's going to retain all the layers so i'm just going to drag it in and now when it asks is it footage no i want it to be a composition and i want it to retain the layer sizes all good all good all right so now we have these two compositions here the one that we created earlier that has nothing in it and this new composition with just the apple in it so we're going to open up this apple and you can see that the background by default is black it's not actually black it's transparent so if you go over here you toggle a transparency grid you can see that it's not actually black that way you know it'll help us see our outlines a little bit better next we're going to talk about rasterizing right because we could take this composition the way that it is right now and drag it into our main comp right now we can just straight up from here straight up just drag it bam and it looks fine right but if we try to zoom it for some reason let's maybe we want to make it bigger right you can see that it starts getting fuzzy it starts losing its um it's vector-ness right it starts getting pixelated and we don't want that so we're gonna go back to the apple comp we can either double click on this layer right here and that'll take us to it we can go to this tab or we can go over here so we'll just go over to the tab and we're gonna select continuously rasterize which is this option right here under this kind of um i would say it's it's kind of like a what would you say that is i say that this is kind of like a skull and crossbones and that's kind of like a compass i guess so we can either go one by one which is you know the slow way to do it or if you just hold and drag all of them or you can select all of them by going to command a and then clicking once and that will continuously rasterize them and look what happened when we continuously rasterized we go back here we press continuously rasterize here as well right and now it's super super sharp what if we undo it right we select it all we undo it we go back now it's blurry show that again there it is just nasty then we go and continuously rasterize it and now it's really sharp it retains that vector quality which is really really nice and that's what you want because that's the whole point of working with vectors in illustrator and bringing them in but that's not the only thing you can do so we're now that we have everything on separate layers we are going to create a subcomp which is a comp within a comp we already have a comp within a comp right the apple ii comp is within the an apple a day work in progress comp we're going to create another comp a sub comp to go right here that's going to be within the apple comp and that comp is going to be our leaf comp so obviously we don't have a ton of layers here right but say we did say we had like 600 layers it's a good thing i named them all right so i can just type in the word leaf and those are my leaf layers so i can select all of them by clicking the first one holding down shift clicking the last one and then you just right click and go to pre-compose pre-compose means create take this selection and create a rushing next russian nesting doll out of this selection right so we're going to pre-compose or if we want to see all of the um all of the layers here my goodness we'll select just the leaf details leaf outline leaf color right click go to pre-compose and it's going to ask us for what we want our name for our pre-comp to be so obviously we're going to call it whole leaf and we're going to press okay we have move all attributes into the new composition selected we're going to press ok so now check it out that leaf has now become its own little composition it's called whole leaf but of course if we want it to stay vectorized we have to turn on continuously rasterize over here so there we go now we can move this and it moves together because it is its own little pre-comp pretty cool the purpose of pre-composing that's a really good question thank you for asking that in the chat room uh the purpose of pre-composing is that sometimes you have way too many layers or sometimes you need to add an effect to a group of layers and that's why weak precompose a really good tie-in to my next lesson which is how do we make this leaf look like it's blowing in the wind well over here in effects and presets this is your friend over here because there are so many effects and presets to choose from and i just happen to know one so i'm just gonna type it in to the type box over here and it's called cc bend it so i'm going to choose i'm going to type in bend it and it is in the distort effects up here so if i go to the distort effects i can also find it here and there are so many different effects let's let's put a few of them on and see what they do just just for kick just for you know understanding what they do and not going straight to the uh the solution here uh let's try the page turn cc page turn we apply it to the leaf and now we can use this oh never mind i guess cc page turn doesn't work on the leaf let's just use cc bend it since i know that works all right so i've put it on to the uh onto the pre-composed layer i can either just drag it directly onto the layer or i can with the layer selected just double click it or i can drag it just onto the layer in here so many many ways to add it but i'm just let's just double click it and this is what happened it kind of cut our leaf into just a little quarter of it that's because the little anchor points for the start and end of the bend are not in the right place so if i try to bend it right now which there's this value called bend and it is currently at zero percent which means nothing's happening right if i try to bend it right now look at what happens so see how it bends around this anchor point so instead let's put that anchor point at the foot of the leaf i'm going to take that back to zero and i can just grab the anchor point and put it at the foot of the leaf then i can grab the other anchor point and put it at the very end of the leaf so now see how the whole leaf is visible because i put these two anchor points over there it might be a little bit hard to see because the anchor points are like beige right now if i want to i can change the color of the layer the label of the layer and that will change the color the angle anchor point so if i want to go here i can just click here and let's see something visible purple purple's going to be more visible for you right so now you can see this anchor point and this anchor point and now when i move this check it out it bends just like a leaf would now we can always now add those cute little um oh my gosh literally why is my brain it's first of all it's 7 30 in the morning so apologies in advance but um my brain is just like anyway so we're going to add a few key frames and uh wait is evan abrams in here hey evan what's up oh my goodness evan don't evan says great to see some love for for bend it somebody says make it a lightsaber listen you can do whatever you want with this is a very powerful effect okay so we're gonna oh great my mouse critical yeah great hopefully it doesn't run out so this is uh it's bending right now right but it's not keyframed so without any understanding of keyframes before we go into it at all let's just do this we're going to enable the stopwatch which is this little stopwatch next to next to the word bend right we're going to put our playhead which is our line over here our blue line we're going to put it at the beginning and we're going to enable our stopwatch so that's like the way that the leaf starts right we're going to move the line forward like two seconds and we're gonna bend the leaf up we're gonna line move the line forward two seconds we're gonna bend the leaf down i'm gonna move it forward a little bit bend the leaf up move it forward bend it down you get it right pretty simple and check it out now that we've done that the leaf is bending as time goes on right what have we actually done though we've actually introduced keyframes so if you go over here to the layer menu you open that up and then you open up effects you'll see the cc bended effect and if you open that up you'll see that that same effect and the value of the effect is right here right that is the same value and the same effect that is up here this is like a mirror image of it but now you can see all of those little changes that we made have become key frames voila right now let's say that i this is very slow for me right i want this to go a lot faster how do i do that well by putting the keyframes closer to each other right so i can put the keyframes closer to each other by literally doing this moving them over one by one but that takes a really long time right i'm not going to do that so instead i'm going to select all the keyframes by drawing a box around them so now they're selected and then as i hold down alt i'm going to drag the outermost keyframe in so holding down alt and dragging that keyframe in you can see that they stretch now with the timing now it's really important to drag your outermost keyframe if i didn't drag my outermost keyframe it wouldn't work so if i had them all selected and i dragged the second to last keyframe you see how all the keyframes just shift together they don't actually change the timings so we're going to make that all of that happen in three seconds so check that out i press the space bar so it rendered and then so it happened but now we have all of this the rest of the 16 seconds so 13 more seconds without anything what do we do well you can copy paste keyframes as well so we're going to select all of these keyframes copy it move the playhead forward a little bit and paste command c command v right then we can select all of them again command c and then command v and so on and so forth and now we have a very happy leaf a very gusty wind is happening right now oh thanks thanks evan i appreciate you being here man i've been trying to understand this for a while and it finally clicked become some because it's interpolation and nobody explained it like that to me before i'm glad you're understanding keyframes keyframes is the very you know the very center of animation all right so now that we have this cute little um leaf let's go back to our little work in progress doc and right now it's huge in our uh entire view so what we're going to do is we're going to pull up the transform controls and transform it back to what it should be so over here in the drop down menu for the layer you can go ahead and press that little um that little triangle and then in the transform controls there you see all of your transform controls and it's currently telling us that it is at 500 percent now i can reset it by just clicking the word reset and that is how many pixels that um beautiful apple is compared to the composition now we need to make it smaller right so we'll go over to scale over here and we'll just type in a new value to make it smaller because it's currently at 100. we can type in like 30. and that looks pretty good to me we can always move it around as well or we can scale it up and down using the bounding box just make sure that if you want it to stay uh fully you know on scale you have to hold down shift just like in a lot of adobe programs all right now remember this black is not black right it's transparent there's nothing so let's add something let's add a background because so far we just have the one layer let's go to layer new solid so we can just add a solid of any kind of any sort it doesn't really matter what the color is so we'll just say background and it's white right and we'll just move it underneath the apple now it's kind of a plain background right so you can you can spice it up or say that you made a solid and the solid is not the color you want right just go over here to effects and presets and type in the word fill and now you have the generate fill effect right so with the fill effect that just fills in anything with a solid color so i'm just gonna take the fill drop it in bam it's red by default and now i can always change it up here i can change it to whatever color i want like a nice orange or something like that but i can also instead of doing a full fill i could do like a nice gradient ooh yes a gradient so instead of the fill i'm going to go to the effects again and i'm going to generate a ramp and a ramp is our gradient so i'm just going to type in ramp and it says here generate gradient ramp so that's what i'm going to do drop it in by default it's black and white and this sort of linear ramp right but the good thing is that we have lots of different options here so we're going to first of all the start color let's make the start color like a nice sunny orange and then let's make our end color we'll actually take a sample of that orange same orange and we'll just make it darker okay looking better already then instead of a linear ramp let's do a radial ramp so it goes out from the center and then we can actually use those same uh little remember how in the leaf we set where the start where the end of the cc bended effect is right the same thing here so if we just grab this and put it right dot mac dab in the middle there we go then this we can put out here there we go and we can always move them around as well so the closer that you move that look at that now we have a very nice background all right let's add some text now i'll show you how to add text from illustrator in just a sec but how do you just add text natively within after effects it is super super easy you just go to the text tool or the type tool i believe it's called horizontal type tool there's a couple different type tools but it's up here in the uh in the tools and then we're gonna type our text so we're gonna type an apple uh day looks great this is how it starts oof that's rough okay this is how it started um not exactly the font that we want not exactly anything that we want so let's adjust it shall we let's uh first of all pick a different font i happen to like this one to tanya i think it's really pretty and then we're going to just give it a little bit of a angle so we can just press um the rotation tool which is w or it's up here you can either press w or do the rotation tool give it a little rotate or if you wanted to you could just go to you could just go down here and rotation is one of the transform controls right just like scale was earlier for the size of the apple uh rotation is a transform control and actually you know what instead of scaling it here i'm going to take that back to a hundred i'm going to scale it using the font itself so up here i'm going to scale it using the font and of course the spacing was off but that's okay and then let me make it left justified so i'll go over to paragraph and if you don't have all of these windows don't fear because you can always go to window and then find it right here like paragraph for example so go to paragraph make it right justified take the word apple make it really big let's see here let me go to character again make it really big give it a little bit more distance from that first word there and then i actually want to extend the word an a little bit more to the left a little bit off so instead of putting a big space here and then a big space here what i'm gonna do is just adjust it right over here in the metrics so i'm gonna put my put my cursor right in front of it and then just adjust the metric of it a little bit there we go and then an apple a day let's give it a little bit more room and then move it to off this way and maybe make it a little bit smaller so that it fits now there's this huge gap between the a and the day so i'm going to use metrics again and there's a gap between the y and the a i'm going to use metrics again so yeah pretty much i think maybe they could be a little bit closer to the and it doesn't actually let me go any farther so instead i can just move it up there we go and position it kind of like that that's looking really good i think hopefully do you agree i don't know but um if you do if you're liking it let me know let's see prove adjusting font within character panel versus on the layer itself whenever something is adjustable via the character panel i just like doing it there because um i tend to like animating using the transform controls right so if i wanted to animate the size of the letters like maybe as they come in uh i'd be able to do it there instead right so that's why anything that's down here right anything that has a little uh stopwatch next to it that's animatable animatable you're put you're able to put keyframes there so it's pretty awesome all right so now that we got this going let's just change the um let's just change the color a little bit of these two to make them a little bit more aptly there we go there we go and then i'm going to add a drop shadow and again like everything is pretty much in these effects and presets if you are familiar with with graphic editing with photoshop with illustrator then you should just know that a lot of the things that you're looking for are just going to show up here so we're just going to type in drop shadow and it's right there so i'm gonna add it and then give it a little bit of distance i don't like doing um black drop shadows i don't know maybe that's just me but i'm not a fan of harsh black drop shadows so i actually like to give them a little bit of warmth or you know whatever the occasion calls for there we go yeah let's make this and a little bit higher there we go now uh now that we have this it's all great right but it's not moving besides the little besides the little um leaf blowing in the wind oh you know what i'm also going to add right underneath the apple i'm going to add a little bit of a shadow right makes sense so i could add it using the um the new layer uh generate fill again so i'm just gonna go to layer new solid again right uh this time i am going to find like a nice dark gray i'm going to say okay dark gray solid i'm going to call it shadow and it makes it you know it makes it a solid across the entire thing right so i'm going to put it down here underneath the apple so that i see the apple and then i'm going to go up here to the rectangle tool and if i hold it i can see way more options so i'm going to go to the ellipse tool and create a mask out of this you know rectangular um out of this rectangular solid i'm going to create a tiny little mask and as soon as i create that mask for that shadow the entire solid is going to go away and it's just going to be the mask for the shadow so that's what i'm going to do i'm just going to draw a little circle and there and then i'm gonna give it a little bit less opacity it's a little too dark right now so i will just go down here again to the transform controls to opacity and then take that down to whatever i feel is is necessary there we go okay so that's our picture it's not moving yet but it can so let's give it some movement what's fun is that in the uh in the text controls here you have so many fun effects and presets actually i wanna do i want to have a day be a little bit on top of it yeah so you have lots of effects and presets so i'm going to go to effects and presets over here and there are uh in the animation presets there's a whole text folder and lots of fun stuff here right you have 3d text animate in anime out blurs fill and stroke graphical multi-line so let's actually explore it a little bit and see what's up so for example uh let's go to animate in what's center spiral we can drop it in and see you can see the keyframes have been added for you you didn't have to set them the animation just happens right i don't like that that's a little it's a little crazy fade up words so this is one word at a time fades up nice um let's see espresso eye chart oh yep it's quite something um so yeah if you if you get a chance typewriter is a really popular one it's like one you know one letter at a time gets typed on if you get a chance definitely check out all of these little presets um i'm gonna go to drop in by character that's the preset that i'm gonna choose so i'm gonna put it in and that just drops it in a little bit from a little bit above but the problem is that right here it's still visible right and it kind of looks a little sketch to me so i'm also going to add you can add multiple ones i'm also going to add fade up characters as well on top of it so now it fades up right but you don't see the drop in so why is that well because the key frames are overlapping on top of each other so if we go over here and we open up the properties of this layer called an apple a day we go to text and we go to animator range selector effects let's see did i one sec there we go now both of them are in there both of them are in there but they're not quite aligned you know what i'm saying because uh first it fades up but it's still hanging up at the top and then it drops down right and i kind of want it to as it's dropping down i want it to fade up right what are the questions let's see wayne armstrong says i would also change the position of the shadow slightly to match the incoming light source on the apple and text oh very good point so very good point let me scooch the shadow over how's that kenai keen eye all right so you can see that the uh the two animators here animator one and animator two they are controlled by a couple of key frames you don't need to really know what range selector is you don't need to know any of it you just have to know that there are two keyframes here and there are two keyframes here and they are not working with each other so we're going to move them around and make them work [Music] so now we don't see any letters hanging [Music] anyway um but one thing that we're missing is a little bit of subtlety right usually it's not going to um no it's not is that not playing back usually it's not just going to linearly drop in right we have to give it a little bit of a more organic timing so that is something that you can do with easing and there's a couple of easing options within after effects so we're going to select these two keyframes the outbound keyframes we're going to right click on them and the keyframe assistant pops up and this is where we can easy ease the keyframes and they turn into these little different style different look of keyframes and it gives them a little bit more of an organic drop but i don't love that either i'm someone who really likes expressions and really likes um plugins and there's a really cool plugin that you can get it's free um or it's a pay what you want it's called ease and wiz and i love it so i'm going to show you how to use it so you just pull it up here under the window menu there it is and it has different uh easing functions based on math so for example the sign function so i'm going to select all the keyframes and i'm going to just say let's apply the sine function and apply and now it should play back a lot smoother so another thing that i want to do is have the apple drop in and have the letters kind of the a day i want a day to go on top of the apple so that's the first thing i'm going to do now that i have you know the actual um the actual animation done what i'm going to do is copy this layer so all i have right now is the background layer the an apple a day text layer the shadow for the apple and the apple so i'm just going to take this command c command v it copies on top of itself and then i'm going to move it to the top and then i'm going to hide it for a sec work on the bottom one now on the bottom one so the reason that i did it like this is because first i wanted to add all the animation so that it's consistent and then i want to uh move these around right so then i'm going to get rid of the word the words a day in the one that's behind the apple and in the one that's on top of the apple i'm going to get a rid of the words an apple there we go move it down slightly there we go and the uh animation is retained however it starts at the same time right because both of them start at the same time so all i'm gonna do is wait until this apple animation has finished which is right around here and if i forget i can always grab the marker which is over here so i can grab this little marker drag it over to indicate that this is where the end of the word apple drops in i can even double click on it and call it something so apple ends and then i'll go ahead and drag the a day layer farther back in time so we have an apple a day and before the uh and you can see that a day is actually a lot slower because it's taking the same key frames so in the amount of time that that this took to come on let me open the animators here so you can see the keyframes so see the difference the distance between these keyframes right here this distance right here it's the same for however many letters are in in an apple as it is for a day right so we want that to um actually come in a little bit closer a little bit faster so we'll move these two keyframes a little bit closer so that it flows better and is at the same rate and actually i might even move this layer a little bit farther because we still have an apple over here to drop so let's add a keyframe for the apple itself we're going to go to the kind of like right when the p drops and we're gonna put a keyframe there so we're gonna put the keyframe in for position so we're just gonna open this up we're gonna look at the word position right here and then we're gonna keyframe it right and then we're going to go forward to where we want the apple to drop finish dropping we want it to finish dropping there and we're going to keyframe it again now because we keyframe the same value both times there's not going to be a difference right between this and this because it's the same value you can use these little arrows to the left and to the right of the keyframe in order to jump to the previous keyframe right without putting without having to like search for it like this so let's jump to the previous keyframe and now let's move the position so let's move our apple directly up it doesn't work directly up unless you hold down shift that way it'll go directly up so there's our apple it went up and it comes down and then the word a day comes down now i don't like the movement again i'm not a fan of just this like straight movement here so i'll pull up ease and wiz again i'll select both of these keyframes you have to select the keyframes and for easing i'll actually do a bounce right because a bounce i feel like is way more organic and i'm gonna say apply so there it is the apple bounces in settles and then a day comes in now can anybody does anybody see the problem here with this bounce can anybody tell me what the problem is let's see see if anyone can see the problem the problem is that the shadow is still the same size right it doesn't move ideally the shadow would be changing with the drop of the apple so we're gonna do that too we're gonna just go to where the shadow is so we're gonna select the shadow layer and we're going to use the position of these two keyframes to keyframe the size of the shadow so we're going to go to this keyframe right here the end keyframe for our apple drop by clicking on the right arrow here we're going to open up the shadows transform controls and we're going to enable keyframing for the scale right then we're gonna go to the previous keyframe for the apple drop which is when the apple was at the top by going over here to jump to it right and then we're going to set a new keyframe for the scale we can either just click on the actual add keyframe button over here or we can literally enter a new number here and that adds that keyframe so we're going to enter the scale of zero and now it's gone so you can see that it appears right oh actually here's one thing that's interesting so it's actually growing from the center so this is this is good to note uh why is it not scaling from itself why is it scaling from the center of the entire thing well because remember we masked to create this keyframe to create this um shadow over here what we did was we masked an entire area right we masked all of this but it's still using that as the anchor point right here that's why when it's scaling up and down it's scaling from the center very easy fix all you have to do is put the anchor point in the middle of your shadow so we just gotta go to this anchor point right here for the shadow right and what i did was right now so that you could see it i soloed the layer right so we have the visibility over here and we have soloing over here so i'll unsolo it so you can see everything so we're just going to move that anchor point to the middle of the shadow and then we're going to move the shadow itself down so now it grows from the center of the shadow but again the issue is we have that bounce happening right and that bounce is not congruent with the shadow growing so we can you guessed it if we select all of the keyframes together all four of the keyframes and then go to the bounce and click apply it'll actually grow at the same time as that bounces down so the scale of the shadow is changing at the same time as the position of the apple and we have something like this cool right uh robert says curious why did you mask an entire fill instead of drawing an ellipse that's a really good question you can um i just wanted to show this way to do it but you can totally just draw a shape layer of an ellipse and then you will also have a similar effect and your anchor point will be in the center thanks joel for control alt home uh that that could have put the anchor point in the mask center because this is an introduction to after effects tutorial i'm trying to stay away from like a million shortcuts so that people can understand um you know how things are done because i feel like when people are starting out with after effects shortcuts can get a little bit intense if you don't know about keyframes in the first place but i appreciate it all right so now that we have that let's go on to our our ipad because i want to show you something i want to show you something cool so let's hope it works it was working earlier let's see um let's see why is it not configured figure oh i think it might be because the program disconnected i think so what i do is i use this program called lonely screen in order to show my ipad on the screen and it can disconnect sometimes for some reason unknown reasons monitor window you know oh there we go is that yeah there we go okay so what's cool um about the ipad is that recently illustrator for ipad came out so i have it right here and because i have an apple pencil it is so much easier for me to draw on my ipad than use a wacom tablet because i don't have one with a screen on it and here i've already started a a little illustrator document what's cool about illustrator for ipad is that it is like full illustrator so you can save it as an illustrator file and then open it on your computer and it'll be like a full-blown illustrator vector file so here i have um literally me uh i'm not even gonna lie to you i just drew myself because at least i have the uh the rights to this likeness because it's me but up here at the top right uh you have all the layers so i actually have a ton more layers here than i did for the apple right and the thing about the apple is that every single layer was just a different tiny element so if you remember even even just the uh the leaf details these little ones that was a whole another layer on this ipad i have lots of details on every layer so like for example this dress right here right the dress has all of these little all of these little lines all these little details in it um the hair has all these other all these details in it these boots have a lot of little lines and details so it would be impossible right to put all of those on separate layers it's just too many layers that's two there's too many layers that's too many layers so instead we're gonna bring it in a different way into illustrator in order to retain all those layers uh so i'll show you like a fancy little way to do it but first let me just draw one thing real quick on this so what you can do is this is actually super super fun by the way oh my hair is gone that's fine what you can do is you can um and i can get rid of the the hand is a separate layer over here you can just like draw stuff and uh put it on different layers and combine things so for example i have here my sneakers and i have a cami and i have well i have my hand but i don't have a red skirt so i'm going to go ahead and make a new layer so i'm going to just press plus and that's layer 17 over here i'm going to rename it it's not letting me maybe it's because i'm streaming it oh red actually i'm just gonna name it skirt you'll see why i'm just gonna name it skirt because we can always change the colors later inside of after effects and then i'm just gonna take the pencil tool not the pen tool because the pencil tool is the one that's going to be giving us the ability to draw these vectors and i'm going to draw a skirt very simple [Music] wow it's a masterpiece i can't believe it um i might move down this little anchor point there okay cool and then i can go into the properties i can go into stroke make it five to match everything else and i can go into fill and you know take a little sample of this cool so that's the skirt um on this same layer so i'm not moving away from the layer of the skirt i'm going to add another object i'm going to add a little belt there we go and i'm just going to have that be a fill with no stroke so i'm going to make it a black fill and then we're just going to get rid of the stroke and that's how easy it is to just create something on the ipad if you have an ipad um even if you don't have an ipad honestly like this is worth getting an ipad for for me anyway oh my gosh what's happening there we go okay so now i have this layer and it's just a skirt layer right it has two objects on it essentially i could have more objects if i wanted to like if i wanted to draw a little uh now this i would do with the with the pen tool if i wanted to draw little lines and stuff i could do that ta-da all right so once you're done with that you can just go to the share and publish and export and here you can save it as an adobe illustrator file and you can just click export and then save it to the location of your dreams i'm going to save it to dropbox okay and let me call it styles for demo and save so you can imagine what i did uh if you're just tuning in by the way what i am about to show you is how i created this situation let me just open it up so that those are my that's my adobe illustrator graphic right there alright so now that it's probably already on dropbox because hopefully my internet got there in time let's open it up so we're gonna go to file open i'm gonna navigate to the lay drop box the one sad thing is i have a iphone but i don't have an apple computer so i have to use dropbox and i don't like it i'd much rather be dealing with um i'd much rather be dealing with you know airdrop and stuff so wait what you gonna do and of course i forgot um what folder i exported it to because that's that would be me yeah files for transfer that makes sense and i called it um i have way too many files to trans oh styles for demo there we go and there's our skirt that we just drew ba-bam so what i did uh in the previous iteration of this so i'll open that up is i did a couple other things this was all very extra honestly but i wrote like new wardrobe generator and i had all these buttons down the side and this is stuff that i actually added inside of uh illustrator on the computer once i brought the file into my computer you can see she's currently wearing absolutely every bit of clothing that i created um so you know once you have something done like this this is called new wardrobe all dot ai what you want to do is bring this into illustrator right or into um after effects remember the way that we did it before let's try that way again so we're gonna and obviously i like being very uh very organized here so i'm gonna create a folder for everything that we just made i'm gonna call it apple demo and i'm gonna put all of those compositions into that folder because i'm about that organized life and now i'm going to go ahead and put in that uh that illustrator file so i'm just going to go to the new wardrobe all that's the file name drop it in and it's going to ask me the same thing right import kind what kind is it is it composition okay yes and i'm just going to double click that composition and there it is the whole thing the whole kit and caboodle the whole shma moodle um the problem that we have though is that each of these layers right it doesn't have all of those details inside that we want it to have so for example let's make an outfit so let's make it with flats no let's make it with sneakers uh with do to do the jacket with the belted shorts the long sleeve tank yeah just like that so that's our outfit right here and let's say that we wanted to change the color of the i don't know the shirt underneath the shirt underneath this jacket let's take the jacket off we want to change the color of this shirt well there is a way to do it right you can go to just like i did before you can go to fill here right drop that fill in but then you lose the details right because it just fills in the whole thing and you lose the stroke all right well let's say i wanted to change the color of these shorts i could go into effects and presets and i could type in hue and put on the hue saturation effect and now i can change the hue go around change the master hue do that that works right but for this shirt if i wanted to do the hue saturation it's not really going to work that well because it wasn't very bright to begin with so the hue it's only going to change minimally right i can't really make it match the shorts if i wanted to right i can't uh when i open up these layers they're just they're not open so what do i do how do i make this better how do i open this the goodness up and get all that that good good that illustrator vector goodness out it's very very simple let me just get rid of the hue saturation on the belted shorts yeah there it is so all you have to do is select all the layers so you can just go ctrl a right click go to create and create shapes from vector layer because it recognizes that it is a vector layer right and it's going to create shapes now when it creates shapes a shape means that the anchor point of that shape will be in the middle of the shape right and it's going to give you all sorts of fun stuff to play with so create shapes from vector layer it takes a hot second to work here's what it says right after effects not all layers were converted because of empty or unsupported content specifically the text layers weren't converted everything else was but the text layers weren't so i can't go in and change the text previously all of my text was on one layer you can see there is a layer called text over here in illustrator and on that layer is all of my text but i can't edit it now well not this way anyway you can't edit it i'm about to show you how but let's just stick with this just to show you what what this is and what this can do so the what what has happened is that it's basically created a shape layer uh that is attached to not not attached to from each of the illustrator layers so you can see it has actually hidden the illustrator layers so this is the ai it doesn't have an eye next to it in the eye logo like eye whereas it has created a shape layer on top and it has the eye logo into it so let's let's open this up and see what's inside right uh let's look at the thigh high boots outlines the purple boots that i just showed you earlier remember they had all of those lines on them um it's taking a while it's it's processing it for a while because it's quite a large file because it's a vector right okay so these are the boots right there and i'm going to uh i'm just going to solo them solo that so you can see it and then i open up the contents and here i have all of the contents of that layer of that shape layer and it's been put into groups well my issue is say i want to change the color of the boots so i'll go in i'll select it it selects everything i'll double click uh still not sure what layer it's on i know logically that it's definitely one of the lower layers right because duh everything else is an embellishment so maybe it's a group 56 or 55 i can toggle it on and off to check with the visibility ah yes it's group 56 so if i open up group 56 over here and i see the fill there it is and there i see the color there it is so now i can confidently say that i can change the color of these boots by going to this and then to here changing the color of the boots cool oh snap all of the embellishments are a dark purple oh no now i have to go into each and every single group open it up try to find where the fill is in order to change it from a dark purple to a dark blue that'll take ages right you don't have to do this you don't have to do this there's a better way and it'll keep your text and make it live text too that's editable [Music] okay we're gonna do it i got really excited for some reason it's eight in the morning okay so instead of doing all this and hurting my computer because my cpu max is out we're gonna close that up and we're gonna go open up what adobe xd if you've never used adobe xd don't worry about it all you have to do is open up and go to on your computer that's it right on your computer and open up that illustrator file but damn and now select that illustrator file there it is it takes a second there it is right now this is the important part you just have to select everything so you go command a so everything is selected and with everything selected you go to the options export after effects it'll take a second would it be sarah asked would it be easier to make every outfit layer the same color initially yeah the thing is um a lot of times you aren't the one creating these illustrations right you are being handed in an illustration from a designer or a stock illustration who knows how they built it right and to reverse engineer that would take ages so this is a good tip to know because now everything is its own shape layer [Music] what yes so now if i want to change the color of those uh of those things i can but the first thing that i like to do when this step happens is you see how everything is the same label just everything is this blue color um don't like that also what it's done is it has created shape layers and groups for those shape layers but the groups are technically um kind of just like placeholders they're kind of just like folders they're not really visible so you can see that the groups here all of the groups are this kind of green color and all of the shapes that we actually want are this uh blue color and you can tell what the shape is that the it's referring to because it has the name that we named it within uh within illustrator so for example one sec very excited oh my gosh come on okay well you can tell why okay whatever um you can tell just by the beginning of it so for example all of these paths here they're part of the body right all of these paths are part of the high-waisted genes all of these paths are part of the camisole and all of these uh groups they're irrelevant so what we're going to do is we're going to select all the groups they're relevant but we need them so we're going to select them and that's not what i wanted i'm going to right click on the actual color of the group and i'm going to say select label group and now that i've selected all of the groups at once because they were all colored that green color right i am going to hide them and i'm going to lock them that way we can't touch them anymore they are if completely untouchable by us um we can now do what we want the next thing that i like doing is i'm just going to go through and label each of these categories of paths with the same color so that later when i'm looking for them i can just select the label group right so i'm gonna go to like these for example these flats over here which are the the yellow flats right and i'm going to you know i don't really care what i'm labeling them with so i'll just go with red then i'll select all the sneakers label them with yellow because it's not by color because i can always change the color right so it doesn't really matter the patterned booties are a big group so patterned booties there's a lot of them here so um yes i will change them to aqua but i can also pre-compose them remember how we did that before so we right-click pre-compose um patterned booties so there we go and make sure to enable the rasterize right here right oh not that one right there so um two ways you can do it right you can either keep all of the layers in this main composition and re-label them to find them easier or you can pre-compose them right but if you pre-compose them it means that all of the layers within patterned booties is now just one layer which it's easier to work with but now i don't have access to to those layers unless i go inside so if i want to uh let's let's do the uh let's do the our favorite which is the boots how do i have okay the boots so we're going to go to the thigh high boots which are these do the purple ones thigh high boots select them so all i'm doing is selecting everything that is parented to that layer that says thigh high boots right click uh we're doing pink that's the next one cool and now that we've selected all the pink ones uh we can solo them by just pressing the solo option here so that they're the only ones we see so those are our boots now and now we just ta-da click so it's a one-click solution to find the layer that you're looking for pretty sweet so i can um so the layers at the that is the uh that's the top outline layer so we're just gonna block that for now let's find this one so now i can just go up here to the fill right and okay i want it to be blue let's make it blue okay let's lock it for meow press the lock button so now that we locked the top outline and the bottom color we can just go ahead and draw a marquee box around all of the little layers and fill them in with the dark blue instead of the dark purple and this line in the middle let's not forget that that's supposed to be black and voila it is super super easy now we can unlock the bottom we can unlock the top we can right click go to select label group unsolo them so we can see everything now you can see that now they are blue so let me open up my project here and uh we have this this is what it's looking like after you label everything you have all of these pretty colors everywhere if you want to open up your view and make it a little bit bigger all you have to do is uh make sure that it's selected so make sure that your tab is selected right here and then just press the tilde key which is that squiggly line on the top left of your keyboard and that opens it up and you can see all of the beautiful colors autosave project of course uh i'm trying to see if you have any questions but it doesn't look that way so i'm just gonna keep going okay um but i what i really want to do is i want to take a look at this text here because the text has now become editable right and now that the text is editable i can add movement to it and i could do all sorts of things to it so let me go down to where the text is there it is there's all the text it's red um cool and i'll solo it just so that i see that text and now i can actually write things that i want to write in it so let me actually unsolo it and make an outfit um let's do the let's not do the dress let's go through and not do the cami let's not do the striped shirt not do the dress i'm just hiding those we'll do the belted shorts we'll do the um we'll do the jacket sure we'll do the thigh high boots our favorite and we'll turn everything else off and now this is i mean it is a more complex it is a more complex process obviously because i have so many layers there's just so much to uh to turn off and on but still it's not even that hard low rise pants there we go cool that's kind of what we're looking like i'm gonna hide these two okay so now that i have these uh obviously these descriptions are not correct they're not accurate okay so we're gonna we're gonna make them accurate first because why because we can edit the text now ta-da so black moto jacket we're gonna do um how about a purple because we can purple long sleeved shirt we can do gray oh this isn't um this isn't left justified so i'll fix that so i'll select it all i will left justify it and then move it over just to make sure that it is whenever i type new things in it's always going to fit and it's always going to present itself properly gray and then we'll do short shorts and i think the top one also needs to be i think the top text and i'm holding down shift as i select both text yeah both of these need to be i'm holding down shift in order to move it left to right without sliding it around everywhere okay and then totally red sneakers right so this is like the big advantage of going through xd first is that you now have editable text and all of those fun text animations that i showed you before you can use them now so we will um this one will do the purple oh let me know if you have any questions now i will say i am way uh i i use after effects quite a lot but i'm uh definitely a premier kind of girl so i will try to help with anything but if i'm stumped there's also um experts in the chat room who will help you out there's so many layers here it's a good thing i already did this so i can if if need be i can just always purple uh knee high boots actually we just say boots okay so there we go um what i'm gonna do is i'm going to move all of these at once and after effects is really cool because it lets you add motion blur to things uh fairy asks can i import a photoshop file into after effects you can and i'm going to be doing uh something similar to this but for photoshop into after effects coming up so definitely if you're interested in photoshop to after effects definitely stick around because there are a lot of photoshop specific tips that i have um elevation asks xd first or illustrator first you draw it in illustrator and then you convert it uh in xd so i'm going to move this about let's just say like five or s seven seven is good i'm gonna move it seven frames forward so i'm gonna hold down command or control and then right tap like the right arrow button on my keyboard one two three four five six seven then i'm going to select all of this text all of it so dude and i'm holding down uh control or command to select all of it and i'm going to pull up the position controls now i can go into the controls like i did before or i can just press p and that'll pull up the position controls for everything and i will keyframe everything right where it is at seven frames in then i will move my playhead back to the beginning and then i'll move things out so i will for example [Music] this black and the word gray both of these words i'll move out and obviously i should probably take the moto jacket and short shorts with me off this way and then i'll do the purple long sleeve shirt and the purple boots off this way now i'm going to stagger the second line so that it comes up a little bit after the first line so i'm going to select all of the second lines so the long sleeve shirt the boots and the short shorts and the moto jacket and i'm just going to start it a little bit like two frames later oh looks like it's time to move on um hope you enjoyed the live stream i think i can keep going because i was cut off on behance so let's see let's see let me see if i can get i know uh i know that i how do i get the link to this oh copy video url there it is i'm just typing for the behance chat all right so then i offset it a little bit blah blah they both they all come in now if i select the uh motion blur option which is this little three circle thing then they'll come in uh not like so strictly they'll come in with a little bit of motion blur so i'm going to select all of those text layers and add some motion blur so there we go now they are coming in with a little bit of blur and of course i want to do what i always do which is take the keyframes go to window ease whiz and give it a little bit of love there uh last but not least hey this says gray short shorts but these are not gray boom now they are this says purple long sleeve shirt um yeah i don't really see the purple but let's fix that if i find it the problem the only issue here is that it's parented and linked here rather than well actually maybe i could type in shirt [Music] nah last let's make it purple long sleeve tank there it is there you are bam purple let's do violet and tada we have a vibe i hope you enjoyed this live stream i'm glad it went smoothly i mean i ran a little bit over but it happens next week i'm going to be going deep deep deep into the world of color correction um all of my like top hacks and tips for doing color correction within premiere pro and if you enjoyed this then uh please let me know in the comments i know i may have gone a little fast if you are a beginner after effects user but hopefully you picked up on a tip or a trick that you didn't know about if you did i would love to know looks like some people join me over from behance thank you so much for um being here for the live stream and yeah i hope to see you next week bye you
