welcome to fifth gear today we're testing three extreme machines with the help of a very special guest I'm joined by the queen of the Nurburgring and German endurance racer Sabine Schmitz we're pitting the latest version of the iconic Caterham 7 against its two wildest rivals to reveal the ultimate driver's car for thrill-seekers Jason gets to grips with a 130 thousand pound off-road beast the Mercedes g63 AMG fighter Vicky tries her hand at the latest track de craze in a Peugeot 205 GTI worth eleven thousand pounds this is my middle pocket rocket and in our team test Johnny's on the edge in high-end eyes radical new Veloster Turbo come on son first it's time to introduce our road-legal extreme machines this is the brand-new version of the Caterham 7 the Supersport are it's been the go-to machine for people who want a racecar feel for the road for decades but it's got some stiff competition like the Morgan three-wheeler weighing less than half a ton it's designed purely for fun celeb car collector Jay Leno bought one after just a half-hour test drive then there's the latest Ariel Atom its philosophy is simple bolt the bare minimum to a massive engine to get your adrenaline pumping we've got three tests reveal which of these very different machines is the ultimate drivers car first we want to see which is fastest around Campbell Park Sabine will drive and we'll start with the least powerful the Morgan three-wheeler [Applause] the Morgan is driven by a two-cylinder 2-liter American motor bike engine with power being transferred to the single rear wheel by a rubber belt with a thin rear tire has not much grip which is fun but makes the handling rather skittish on the limit time for a fast laugh [Music] it was very comfortable I must admit at first until spin started going at a reasonable speed and then she hit the brake so got a footrest like torpedo down into the foot well almost I locked the tires many times because I mean it's the three-wheeler what do you expect [Music] I'm not driving it just didn't feel right State now she felt quicker than I thought it would feel and exhausting two minutes 7.1 seconds my race car it's fun car next the Caterham 7 the second most powerful of our trio okay - how many wheels do we have when we jumped from the mortgage the caterer is like jumping into a Rolls Royce but wind screaming a heater warming our feet Caterham say the Supersport are is all about intensifying the raw pleasure of driving down long winding country roads and of course only car here with the kudos of a sister Formula One team [Applause] no abs you know it's just pure thriving there is no weight on the car you just have to take care about the tires that you don't lock them up when you brake too hard [Music] much quicker in a straight line Rob see Cory was much faster of course we got to the end of the stopwatch laughs [Music] was a fool 20 seconds quicker than the Morgan so much fun so the Caterham is quickest so far but our final car is the most powerful of the three the aerial the back in the wild elements not just our faces being blown but of course better coming in the sides to the holes in the scaffolding chassis at 38 grand the atom is the most expensive of our cars are by far the noisiest [Music] it's really quick after the word goat this thing is really not easy to handle the supercharged atom can out accelerate any new Ferrari but it's track-day tires need to be warm before they offer full grip and then the rear wheels are locking oh god I never mentioned it knows to be back on the tarmac it's time for a fast lap [Music] there is a fast car it's the rocket we stop talking just enjoying alright [Music] [Applause] it was obviously quicker the Caterham but pretty surprised it was only four seconds quicker the atom is the trickiest car on the limit but keep it on the track and it is the fastest it wins test one the queen of the Nurburgring and I have already found that the arrow at amis fastest around a lap followed by the Caterham 7 the Morgan three-wheeler was bonkers but brought up the rear our next high-octane test is one close to my heart drifting it's the ultimate thrill seekers skill and a black art that these machines need to have mastered first the Morgan just will twice each car sideways wrong this long right hander well at least that's the idea I'm not quite sure it's gonna work with three wheels and then you will get points how good the car handles on a good trip and then see how Sabine mounts better 10 for my style elegance y'all ready for rock'n'roll don't use one roll wheels on it and I'd rather we left the roll out for the rocky if you don't mind okay then go for it my worst nightmare was about to become reality [Music] with its skinny motorbike front tires offering little grip and the engine mounted right out of the front the Morgan had very nose heavy handling after spinning on the slippery grass all three tires suddenly gripped the tarmac and I end up with the stability crashing front tire was really this oven yeah you're airborne long lasting okay to see I want to see something very special now I have a plan Sabine I have a plan [Music] it was a Morgan drift it just doesn't see how many points I think for bravery tape and for drifting about +6 sail on the grass because this car looks so good anyway I give you seven and a half so for creative use of the grass rather than the tarmac the Morgan gets a rather generous thirteen and a half out of twenty next up the Caterham okay I wanna see smoking rear tire [Music] my grandma would have started better I'd sort of got going towards the end but it needs a bit more aggression at the beginning correct with a hundred and eighty horsepower the Caterham has more than enough power to drift but being a featherweight it's got snappy handli at the limit however I reckon this beast can beat Amon [Music] [Applause] [Music] almost perfect I'm so proud to see it's still not easy I'd only give it 7 out of 10 for ease and challenging when it wants to straighten itself all the time sounds good so the Caterham sneaks into the lead with 14 now to see if our winner of test one the Ariel Atom can top it hello Sabine darling are you ready let's go chocks away [Applause] with cold tires the Aksum suffers understeer at the limit so instead of the rear tires losing grip and me go sideways the Front's lose grip and I straight on I promise now who's complaining about the tires they're racing tires I've got to warm the front you didn't give me time to warm the front tires up [Music] ah not tiles percent but it is it's something you know you can't hold that drift along it just wants to be corrected I mean there was a drift it was short I'm sure you want to give yourself a 9 or a 10 no this is hard to dream so he gets five five for entertainment value for yeah so the atom could only master a paltry 9 out of 20 making it the loser and test to the counter wins thanks to softer suspension and more body roll making it easier to deliberately unsettle the car in the corner the result is a sideways and more thrilling Drive Sabine has already found out that Ariel is the quickest driver's car here and I'd burn some rubber to reveal a Caterham it's best if you want to drift this test is designed to see which will leave your mates the most impressed when you take them for a spin Sabine is wearing a heartrate monitor which has recorded her normal rate about 70 beats per minute whichever car causes Sabine's heart rate to hit the highest reading balloons the test and it'll give me a perfect opportunity to see how they perform when you drive them for thrills in this test speed isn't important it's all about the pure visceral experience and which car will excite your passengers the most [Music] cup of tea [Music] Sabine's already seen the morgan nearly roll over combine that with its lack of doors and the sense of danger is sky-high [Music] I wasn't wearing the car of course cuz I nearly put it on two wheels trying to power slide it so I was a bit tentative in the corners but Spain did see the mine she loved every moment of it [Music] not fast but you know the balance and it's waving like like he's just a thrill funding car it's lovely at 40 or 50 bars now and that's about as fast I really wouldn't go in one to be honest [Music] yeah I enjoy the dr+ I had a little bit of too much of a hot Pete I guess it was anticipated finished to be my passenger I think she's have a lie-down the Morgan is frustrating to drive quickly it's got poor grip Numb steering and lacks power but thanks to its guttural noise open cabinets were me handling it's thrilling to ride as a passenger it sets a benchmark of 159 beats per minute next the Caterham it was 20 seconds faster than the Morgan but is it any more thrilling [Music] I did so I don't get a heart beat up a bit like you get that frisky flicky [Music] after a while I said to myself I gonna die anyway because he was driving like hell [Music] [Applause] he just I don't know what's going on in his head he's also pushing pushing pushing [Music] [Music] the Caterham is grippier and more exciting to drive than the Morgan but thanks to creature comforts like a windscreen and race harnesses it's less thrilling as a passenger Sabine's heart rate is 19 beats per minutes lower than in the Morgan finally our fastest most expensive and most powerful machine I'm expecting Sabine to go off the scale [Music] the exoskeletal chassis isn't that aerodynamic but does leave you open to a battery from the elements to be a passenger in the atom oh that was the atoms soon brought a Sabine's heart rate back up again but there is a fast car being so open you feel that speed all the time pulling your hair pulling your clothes [Music] he was fighting you know he was really sweating let's look longer isn't it this is an animal behind the wheel [Applause] [Music] the aerial is the trickiest to drive with AG handling that requires 100% concentration all the time it's got the Morgans 159 beats per minute to beat and in a big shock scores 155 beats per minute this high-tech machine lacks the Morgans old-fashioned sense of danger I was told she would bring a bigger heart rate than the the little Morgan but I think because she knew the grip was there she knew at the car horses something tip onto two wheels our three machines have won a test each the aerials the quickest the Caterham is the best drifter and the Morgan gets the pulse racing fastest overall we choose the Ariel as the outright winner it sets of speed and brutal relentless come on is it possible to match this screaming piece of scaffolding is the ultimate machine for thrill-seekers you you
