this is eric from pack hacker and today we're going to be taking a look at the thule compression cubesat which i've been testing for the past two weeks let's dive in [Music] so as you can see here this compression cube set comes in two sizes i've got the small size over here on the right side and i have that one packed out and then i have the medium cube over here and that one is not packed out so i can just give you kind of the details between them when they are full and when they aren't full but obviously just to compare the size obviously this one has stuff in it this one is quite a bit smaller than the medium and it's better tailored for like maybe like your delicates like socks underwear stuff like that and then this bigger one obviously can fit larger items like if you like to travel with jeans or you know a big sweatshirt or something like that it's going to fit inside here whereas that might take up you know the entire small cube so good to know what's what's better for what size and obviously it'll be a little bit different for everybody but the exterior materials on this is a rip stop nylon and it's durable but it's pretty thin like it's a good a good mixture of thin and durable like as you can see i'm pulling it there there's not really any give to that material at all but it is a little bit see-through so as you can see on the small one that i have stuff inside you can see that darker shirt there a lighter shirt here and then a white shirt on the top so if you're someone who's pretty private about what's inside their bag this material might not be for you we've got ykk zippers on both of them the zipper to open the compartment is a ykk number five and the compression zipper here is a ykk number eight both feel well tailored to what they're designed to do obviously with the heavier zipper doing the compression and then we have these nice pulls here as well that are easy to put your finger through and pull on there is a little handle here on the top which is nice for grabbing it out of your bag you can fit your whole hand in there and just kind of slide it out you could also hang it if you wanted to on something but it's not really great for that because if you're hanging it like this and you open up the bag as soon as you open it all your stuff is going to kind of tumble out so that's not the best use for it but being able to grab onto it and hang it on to something if you needed to while you're waiting in the bathroom or something like that is a nice inclusion uh then on the back here we do have this blue sign product tag here sorry i held it upside down for you guys see the little blue sign tab here it adds a little bit of nice contrast but the most important thing is that if it's a blue sign product it means the materials are sustainably sourced and you're seeing more and more companies move towards that and it's just a great thing to see on any product that you buy so i'll open the one that does not have gear inside at first just you can kind of get a run down so this black zipper is the access to the main compartment so it's nice to have a distinction between the black zipper and the white zipper so you know which one to open when you're trying to get inside so you open that up and right now this is not this is compressed so there isn't a ton of space here you can see that there's really just that much depth to it but if we were to unzip the compression here that adds a ton of space to work with so you get all of that extra space to kind of make this your own and then once you've packed everything inside there it's almost kind of like a lunchbox right now load everything in there you can close the black zipper here which is the main compartment zipper and then you close that gotta find the zip there it is that compression zipper so that's obviously way easier to do when there's nothing inside of here so now we'll move over to the small compression cube which has stuff inside it so right now if i were to open the i'll just do it to show you if i open this up everything's kind of popping out because it is compressed you can see that it's obviously i don't want it to fall out but that's how much you know room is it's popping out now so it'll be kind of hard to close this because it's compressed already so this zipper is doing the compressing but it is possible to do but i will open the compression zipper so you can kind of get an idea of see there you can see that it gained all that extra room and then when i open this those won't be popping out nearly as much they're almost you know inside of the compression area so i've just got three shirts in there right now just as a kind of a a good a guide to show how much you can't fit inside of this small cube so this is better as i said for socks underwear stuff like that because that is so much smaller whereas compared to this kind of bigger sweatshirt here this takes up you know more than a third of this whole cube so this is going to be better off in this big packing cube where it's only going to take up you know maybe a sixth or something like that but it is able to fit inside of here if you need it to but larger items do kind of it's hard unless you have your hand on it to keep it compressed and my first notion is to go use something like a velcro cable tie to wrap around it but that doesn't work with all clothing types so as i said it's better to just put those larger items inside the larger cube but again to show you how to compress this when there is stuff inside there you close the black zipper which is for the main compartment and then you find the zipper here what i found the best best way to do this is to just kind of grab it with your fingers first to bring it together and then start zipping then once you kind of get going it just kind of goes and i keep my finger underneath there maybe it's just a comfort thing but it makes it feel like it's easier to do and then you can kind of just pull it around and then you are fully compressed and it does save quite a bit of space especially if you have clothes that like to just kind of unfold like if you have a big sweatshirt or something like that if you just threw it into your bag it's going to kind of be everywhere and it's not going to be very economical with you know it's space saving but if you were to throw a big sweatshirt in one of these packing cubes and you can kind of get all the air out of it by using this compression zipper you are going to save a ton of space but for things that roll up easily you're not going to save that much space because it's already pretty small so being being smart with where you place things is important when you're using these packing cubes so there you have it the thule compression cube set thanks for keeping it here at pack hacker your guide to smarter travel we'll see you in the next one
