Friends, hello everyone! I continue to learn the art of working on a lathe. Today there will be quite an interesting video. I want to try tapping with a small hand-held router. In the last video, we made a mandrel for it. The manual router has shown good results. He easily removes one millimeter of duralumin. They are milled without any vibration. This gave me the idea why not try threading. For this purpose, I ordered a tungsten carbide cutter from China . Sharpening angle 60 degrees. The cutter is very high quality and sharp. Shank diameter 8 millimeters, just right for my little router. We put and try. We will do it according to GOST. I have a printed one. Rods for cutting metric threads. It’s old, I don’t know whether it is valid or not. It helps me a lot, greatly simplifies my work and calculations. The thread will be m42 with a pitch of 4 millimeters. The nominal diameter for which the rod needs to be prepared is already indicated here . I've already done all this. For a certain thread pitch its own diameter. I also want to practice tapping with a lot of starts. We will cut 10 runs or turns. If we want to cut 10 passes, we need to multiply the 4 mm step by the number of passes. That is 4 x 10 and we get a pitch of 40 mm. We set up the machine at step 40 and cut. This is not the last complication. One of the subscribers suggested that I try to cut threads in two directions at once. So that the bolt has both left and right threads. This idea does not go out of my head and we will try to implement it. The cutter must be very precisely aligned, just like the cutter when threading. We set it exactly at an angle of 90 degrees to the rod. This will help me to make such a template. It is also called a fish. To know how deep we need to make one more setting. When rotating the workpiece, lightly touch the cutter and set the cross feed dial to 0. We also need to make a groove for the cutter to exit. Fine ! 20 rpm, set the minimum possible. This will be a lot. I've already tried it. Cutting too fast. Therefore, a frequency converter will come to our aid. Reduce it by 5 times and now the cartridge is spinning at a very slow speed. I don't know how many revolutions per minute it is. We have a lot of threads, we cannot do without a hour indicator. Each subsequent thread will need to be offset by 4 millimeters. It was given to me by my friend, Zhenya Coyote. Zhenya, thank you so much! See, it's already gone. This is a luxurious, simply luxurious hour indicator. The infeed depth will be 3 millimeters. I will do it in three passes. The first pass is 2 millimeters. The second is 0.9 mm and the last finishing is 0.1 mm. I also reduced the speed and now stands on the 4 hertz frequency converter. This is done in order to reduce the load on the cutter. In my opinion, very, very worthy! You can do it not in three passes, but in 4. The latter is not 0.9 mm, but 0.5 and 0.4, then finishing. It will be even better. We move along the indicator by 4 millimeters. Bellissima! Guys, as far as I can see, very, very worthy. I like what happens. It turns out very cool. It remains for us to mill one turn. I will try to show how this happens up close. The chips are very thin and sharp, like needles. I want to tell you that it fits very well. Probably already received about 100 splinters. How do you like turning art in business? Thread 10 starts! Imagine, it turns out very beautifully! And now we need to thread directly on this bolt, only in the other direction, to the left. Nobody has done this before! We adjust the machine to the left-hand thread and repeat the whole procedure. All the same 10 turns, only in the other direction. Lubrication. So the process is going on little by little. Guys, I must admit I made a gross mistake. To celebrate, by the end he became a little inattentive. Shifted the next turn more than necessary by one millimeter. Then I noticed it unfortunately. This is a marriage. Everything needs to be redone. But that's okay. From a certain period of my life I have been trying to finish all my projects, all the things I have started. It helps a lot in development, in learning. Do not abandon you if something does not work out. All over again. We will definitely complete this small experiment, a small project. What is this knurling for? For the skin to peel off? Men's turns out! And the second question, why did you spoil the fish ?! )) She now clearly does not look like a fish, but she did not look like a fish. I'm shocked! How do you like this thread? Thread?! I hope it will twist as well as it looks! I also! Let's see, no one knows, because no one else has done this! If I don't go, he sharpens everything like the devil. I went here of course through Crimea and Rome. But my level went up a little. Got up?) Finally, friends, mission accomplished. Not completely of course. We need to make two more nuts . The beauty! To be honest, this is the fourth attempt. Here is the first one, here I was just in a hurry. One turn has moved more than necessary. I started doing everything again. In our garage cooperative, the lights are turned off every evening. At about nine o'clock, you can ask for an extension to 11. This is for safety. At the most inopportune moment, they turned off and broke my cutter. I was very upset, but decided not to give up. I cut a thread for the third time, I can say I milled it. Probably it will be more correct. It turned out a little inaccurate. I controlled the displacement of the turns not along the limb of low longitudinal feed, but with the help of an hour indicator. Unfortunately, probably due to a lack of experience I had, an error was accumulating. It turned out very imprecise. It was clear that there was a considerable shift. The carving came in waves. For the fourth time already with a lot of experience, I controlled only by the limb. It turned out very very well. I am very happy, if not happy! In case you're wondering, there are 540 diamond pyramids here. A very evil knurling and at the same time a thread of 10 starts in two directions. I don’t know what to call it right, bi-directional or double-sided thread. Because right and left at once. Guys, the cutter has shown itself from a very good side. If I hadn't broken it, then she would have cut all four attempts calmly without sharpening. After two attempts, it was still very sharp. I will show you what quality is obtained close to this cutter. Milling cutter 60 degrees. I re-sharpened the cutter as best I could. Of course, she didn't cut, she didn't mill as well as in the beginning. But I was still able to finish. Made more passes simply. So I highly recommend it. Who needs the link will be in the description and in the pinned comment. Let me remind you that this is a tungsten carbide carbide cutter. Angle 60 degrees. Milling cutter fire is simple! All that remains is to cut two nuts with ten passes. One on the left, the other on the right. Finally it happened! I finished. For me it was five days of turning work. For you about 10 minutes. But I'll tell you, my level in the art of turning has increased. Let's try. This is the right nut and the left one. Wow! Wow!! That's what I understand !!! I wonder if they will twist themselves? What? So it was possible ?! Yes, there is, there is !!! See how else you can! There are no words, wow! All friends, spinner in the past! Now you can calm your nerves with a bolt.) The only remark is that it should be with 10 passes. How is your brain? My own person is a little seething with this puzzle. It turned out very cool! I am very happy, the mood is just 100 percent! I'm glad I got this project. Whoever liked it, be sure to like it. Let everyone see it! Subscribe to the channel who has not yet subscribed. I have everything for today. See you soon, everyone.)
I'm not against repost but I'm getting tired seeing this all over reddit.
Here are the three usual top questions and answers ao we can top talking about this :
No it's not a fake
No its not practical, contact surface area per nut is ridicule.
There's no practical use, it's just a demo piece
Neat.First time i seen it.
I want to see it torqued to 200 ft•lbs
