Thoughts on Generational Curses

let me talk about generational curses all right you ready for this we talk about generational curses that's what this question came in actually just came in today and I thought I'll I'll respond to this now just so you know my my response is not going to be a full-on teaching and breakdown when I address these questions I just I just live in I live in a flow of of responding to them and kind of bringing some highlights and some feedback to it in best way I can so the question is what are your thoughts on generational curses I personally don't find this teaching to be biblical I'm charismatic and I've studied this teaching in depth I believe this teaching comes from twisting Old Testament scriptures the Bible says that God doesn't punish um doesn't punish the sons for the sins of the father and the father for the sins of the son I don't believe there is anything in my generational bloodline greater than the blood of Jesus I was recently told that I had a generational curse cuz I'm struggling with a mental health issue they wanted me to ask God for forgiveness in prayer for multiple Generations back how can I ask forgiveness for sin I never committed can you give further insight into this teaching okay there's multiple parts of this and kind of give a general response to the term generational curses I've never used the term I may have said it but I don't use as a regular basis the term generational curses it's not in the Bible it's been a term we've put together as a way of addressing generational uh Battlegrounds that people have and when it comes to what the Bible says the Bible says that there is an aspect of sin that sin that travels in Generations we were born with sin I think we can all agree on that David said uh in iniquity I was conceived so there's three aspects of sin that I see in the scripture one is where the Bible uses the term sin as a verb like to miss the mark it is something uh we we've sinned and fallen short of the glory of God there is uh something that that was done that was not of God it was sin now we could get into defining sin whatever is not a faith is sin all sin is lawlessness there scriptures that that talk about what that is that would be a whole teaching in itself the second is a fascinating uh expression of the word sin that Paul the Apostle brings up when he's going through his Romans writing and his journey he talks about Sin and when it's expressed it's a noun the word is not a verb it's a noun he expresses it as a being it is not I who do it but sin that dwells within me so now he's expressing it in in a noun as a being so what this does is this brings out the imagery that we see in Genesis where we see The Serpent and we see sin coming into and so now we see this this mystical kind Invisible Presence being shown as a being that enters that has an influence right so Paul says when I do these things it's not even me doing it so here we get this picture of a uh we could call it Supernatural invisible force that's seeking to in in all of mankind infect the world infect the world's system so in the Old Testament in Genesis we see where Cain a word is being brought to him saying sin is crouching at your door and the imagery there is speaking of a being that is wanting to enter in to in have a sense of influence now even just now in what I'm saying there's many people because of their fear of evil they start getting cre out because a lot of modern Christianity and even I could say Christianity going way back has a lot of superstitious fear about the invisible realm we deal with a lot of uh spiritual warfare superstitiously in fact most spiritual warfare teachings I hear have an influence of a of superstition and a fear of evil and so those those two things infect us and don't let us see things soberly and also the victory that is available to us so anyways you see this picture where Paul's going there's this Presence at work and it's not me and that's why in a lot of teachings I talk about you know thoughts are not you you are not you know these these things are not you because people go well I had this intrusive thought that's that's this and I go yeah yeah that's not you but what if I really wanted to do it still not you still not you you you just think it's you because you feel it right so there's the second usage of the word sin and I'm going somewhere with this about generational curses because the third usage we see in the Old Testament especially is the word iniquity where you see you see where sin and certain sin patterns travel in Generations okay so with that in mind um you can see and study that families you inherit certain patterns in your family and it's not just it's not just sinful patterns there's great things you inherit from your parents that you know whether you have a good relationship with them or not there are biological things you inherited that come out of a result of either good decisions good cultivation maybe there's certain acts of mindsets of Integrity or certain things you lean into because your parents cultivated that you inherited that as something you you kind of lean into those grooves and it was cultivated in your family you see these things don't just they're not just traveling in our biological line they're also things our family cultivates that's why you can see in certain cultures you look at somebody hey you're Irish you're Italian or this there's certain patterns that you can see right because they're things that are passed down whether they were taught or not but they're also reinforced in families right so you and I we have we have a bit of that in my journey that's why I can say I say certain things of like my Norwegian side's coming up right now or my Puerto Rican side's kicking up right now what I'm alluding to is bringing up some of those patterns that I can see in Generations so let me first say this though um somebody says you have a generational curse because you're struggling with a mental health issue first of all if anyone says that to you they're unsafe don't listen to them anymore uh put some distance there because it's a very Silver Bullet kind of answer and um the generational curse mindset is like you've inherited this kind of mystical mystery thing that you need to find and once you pray it it's broken and now your mental health is all better it's misleading people it's misleading people because we have been given a new inheritance in Jesus Christ when when we said yes to Jesus we become Born Again of a new seed right now there is an old working uh called the flesh that's where sin dwells Paul said within me nothing good dwells that is in my flesh that's the old you where the being of sin is having its operation you cannot conquer sin with a working of the law and a lot of generational curse teaching is law-based you need to figure this thing out you need to pray this thing you need to pray it out and break it okay we do that pray okay I'm not seeing breakthrough oh that's because you haven't shut the door oh that's because you haven't done what I get frustrated with and I believe in the power of Deliverance I I I don't believe in how it's often used because Deliverance ministers can often do this this switching thing where they can just oh you know what it is because you have a curse and you do their protocol and you're like I'm still struggling to have some breakthrough and they're like oh you know what it is I know what it is it's this and then they start throwing this it's this thing it's this stronghold it's this thing and those of you that have gone through the car wash of you know Deliverance things you you you've seen this over and over again you never do you hear a Deliverance Minister go you know what I don't know they always have a reason I know the Lord's showing me it's this it's because you have this so so you slap this generational curse thing on somebody and so they feel okay God is punishing me now you're bringing in an Old Testament Paradigm of of what the law brought about which the law brought about punishment Thou shalt not you're not going to be able to do it and so therefore consequences you know come out of that and um and the working of the curse comes about in that and I I I I see the working of inherited sin in the families I definitely see that but you can't you're not going to remedy the sins in your family by going through a car wash list praying through them all I Repent of them I I forgive I forgiven my Generations previous generations all the way back to Adam I do that's not going to magically solve these things because Generations are not shifted overnight it takes an entire generation to make a generational shift and what I mean by that is it takes your lifetime to make shifts in your generation we don't make room for PR we don't make room for your journey now mental health is not a you just have a curse and that's why it's there so if this is something somebody says to you then note to self don't share with them because they're just going to throw that card at you and you're going to be like well I prayed through this I prayed through that next time you come back they're going to go you know I have a concern about uh healing uh even healing Ministries you know you go up for prayer and never does a healing Minister go you know I um I I don't know what's going on and I I need to go pray about it it's always back on you that you need to do something more and I would like to say to more healing ministers how about you get more of an anointing because you prayed for me and because people prayed for PE Jesus prayed for people that had had barely any faith and saw healing right so they put I'm all about not adding burdens to the people and a lot of our recipes we give to people are just more burdens and these the the the the generational curse mindset puts us in the blessing cursing kind of Arena right and put you in Deuteronomy was it Deuteronomy 28 you do this blessings you do you do this cursings right the problem is is every Christian flunks that you cannot maintain that oh I shut the door and break the agreement did this and do that there is aspect of that but it really really needs to be it needs to be done in in in the love of God in the grace of God and in a journey you're on a journey of putting away the sin patterns of your family so like many of you for example many of you you you you look in your family and you can see a whole shopping list of sins that are there I could tell you I look at my like for my dad's side of the family the Puerto Rican Spanish side of the family a lot of sinful patterns that have to do with uh uh um um not not being uh monogamous a lot of uh you know sexual sins uh even a lot of addictions perversions uh there's a lot of mental health Battlegrounds my my grandfather committed suicide I never met him right so that's just that side now my mom's side of the family you know depression uh coldness uh there's um um what you what do you estrangement in in in family estrangement from mother to Children estrangement right and so uh I see those patterns happening in my own family upbringing in my own thing right and I would sit there and I'd go through the list I'm going to pray through the I'm going to break these things and you know what I realize in the journey I'm grateful for those prayers those workshops I went through I'm grateful for even teaching on that because I do believe in renewing family patterns and breaking the Cycles in family but it doesn't happen through one little prayer session it happens this is multifaceted this is lifestyle you see my mental health journey I could easily look and go I got I got 700 generational curses I could give you story after story after Story of absolutely destructive behavior I'm I'm a miracle just being here right now but the miracle started with I want to I want to step by step let God do a work and recognize stuff in my life when it pops up so there's times where to be very honest no disrespect to my family but there's times in my journey where I go I'm acting like my dad right now you know not not in the not in the good areas or I'm acting like my mom right now and I and and what we do is and we shame ourselves oh I got to pray this I got to pray this out I want to be like my parents just recogniz and go okay something to be aware of God cuz then we humble ourselves cuz that's the next part as we humble ourselves God I don't I don't want to serve the sins of my Generations I don't want to serve the pride the stubbornness and there's a lot of mental health Battlegrounds and I could I could make myself even feel crazier just by trying to figure everything out the depression the bipolar the addictions the narcissism you name it it's there look at my family tree I did family tree work right and I think for some of you uh for all of you really it's helpful to just look at your family tree kind of just maybe put it on paper and go wow I'm a miracle I'm a miracle that I am where I am we are on a journey of manifesting the new nature in Christ Jesus and letting that have a work and that takes time it takes SE I'll be spending the rest of my life establishing a new Legacy so I don't go around though going you have a curse and you have a curse on you and so in this context the sister who wrote this she's coming under this thing that God is punishing you for the sins of your family now may H is it possible you have inherited patterns in your in in your family that that hinder your mental health sure but if we put this like like you know like this Mark on your back this branding the generational curse we put this God's punishing you and now you got to fix this thing and and with a law I got to repent I got renounce I got to get all these things we make people neurotic and we make Christians start to feel cuckoo over trying to chase down our mental health Battlegrounds when this is multifaceted mental health is not a one thing issue it's not just a demon it's not just stinking thinking it's not just trauma it's not just lack of equipping in your childhood it's not just father and mother wounds it's a whole package of how how things have infected how you think and that is quite an overwhelming package isn't it but God is not walking up to us and going hey Welcome To The Kingdom I got a list of things that you're going to have to pray through and work through no what he gave you is he gave you a new inheritance but but the thing we don't make room for in Christianity is the process of the new inheritance because when I became born again there was availability to me of the Kingdom in that moment but it's taking me decades and decades and Decades of learning how to live in that for example let's say one day a homeless person just knocked on my my door in my house and said um hey can you just spare some change so I can get coffee and I said I got better than that I'm gonna make you a son in my family and you're a part of the house now I'm gonna adopt you in you have access to everything in my house all the money all the resources everything that I have is yours and you are now brought into this do you think that this guy who is who knows how long he's been living homeless without money living survival right for decades do you think in that moment he's just going to go oh I just get it and all the old patterns and ways of living just disappear no it's going to take time to learn he's going to go over to the fridge and go hey is it okay say yes go over to the fridge you have food go ahead anytime you're part of the household it's going to take time to go is this real is this for real the same thing in coming into the kingdom we have a new father new family we have a new identity we have a new inheritance we're learning what this is generational curse teaching gets us in law and it gets us focusing on everything that's wrong with us versus everything that's right in Christ Jesus to overthrow everything that is not of God within us I hope you're you're you're following this so far so what I find to be helpful when it comes to what God is doing in US is found in in Galatians um what give me a second here because I want to I want to pull this up because talk about blessings and cursings Galatians 3 and oh perfect there's the word curse I was looking for looking for curse so let's bring this up right here in the writing of Galatians Paul brought up a problem and one of the things that was taking place with with with this church and it applies to us today he said you got faith you got Grace you stepped into it and then you got Goofy with we got to make sure we celebrate the holidays these things festivals we got to make sure you drifted back into law and it's a tendency that we still have to this day it just may not look in the same way but it's in our performance perfectionism battles and all that stuff right so then with with spiritual warfare with with uh generational iniquities and the sin patterns and our struggles we're now obsessively trying to fix ourselves let me do this let me do that so I so I fix myself and now we're getting back into law and Paul's saying this is this is not how you got free you got free as a work of Grace and Faith Jesus Paid the full penalty for you and you say yes to it by faith and you now step into it by faith okay Faith isn't uh something that I get the feeling and then I do it faith is actually in the action and the prototype in the Old Testament if you want to understand old test sorry Old Testament understanding of faith and Grace you see the sto uh the person Abraham Abraham is the Prototype of understanding Grace in fact understanding the gospel I'll go back a verse here uh Abraham was preached the gospel understand the gospel look at this right here Galatians 3:8 and the scripture foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith not by trying to do everything better and make yourself better he preached the gospel to Abraham what did that look like what did that wow Abraham's getting the gospel can you imagine his brain going who in you all the nations shall be blessed you know Abraham was from was it the caldes or these people were like witchcraft uh pagan people but God saw Abraham and said I'm going to do something in you what is the key of Abraham's faith that you and I need to apply and especially so many that are obsessors perfectionists Abraham stepped out and he walked the journey and that's so much of what I'm teaching you all when it comes to Faith it's not about getting it right in your head feeling it right I'm believing right we have attributed believing as to getting it right in our heads and making sure we feel okay that's not what Abraham demonstrated he stepped out and he he lived it he wasn't perfect that dude was super flawed go read his story and his journey so was Moses so was all of them but you see the template of what God was doing in faith and so I this this addresses generational curses here so then those who are of Faith are blessed with believing Abraham we come into the line that Abra was breathing that he was bringing forth and we see you know where the law came forth and we see the Old Testament and the prophets but it was all leading to Christ and Christ looks back and goes see Abraham the gospel was working there with Abraham okay so Bible says this for as many as have mental illness are under a curse so as many that have whatever are under a curse no no no as many as are under the works of the law now I'm going to be honest with you I've sat under many Deliverance teachers many blessing cursing teachers I've read many of the topshelf books 100% across the board every single one of them gets goofy In this passage of scripture they can't teach it they can't teach it for what it is they have to start dodging it they can't just teach it word for word for what it says if you live a Works mentality under the influence of the law you're going to have this blessing cursing kind of mentality going on in your life and you're actually inflaming the work of the curse why are we not teaching people this that you actually need to get free from this I do good I didn't do good let me repent and cross the tees and dottle the eyes in my generations and get it all right now are there times in my journey where I go you know what something's breaking in my Generations yes but it's a faith experience where something's illuminated I'm empower word in it it's not this like oh I got to pray this prayer I got to do this thing I got to make sure I get this laundry list all fixed it's I'm I'm seeing the new nature in Christ taking shape in more areas of my life and how I do relationships and how I live my life and how I think anyways Paul says for it is written cursed is everyone who does not do all the proper Deliverance prayers it doesn't say that everyone who does not continue in all the things which which are written in the book of the law so you can't pick and choose if you going to do this kind of blessing cursing kind of uh uh um you ditch that you get into you have to do it all you got to do it perfectly so somebody will go hey I had a breakthrough I did this this and this and this so then they do it again and they start creating a formula with God and they start treating God like a slot machine okay God I prayed this thing I prayed that thing right do I believe in Repentance yes yes it's a changing from one way of thinking and moving into a new uh do I believe in forgiveness yes do I believe in Breaking family patterns yes Melissa and I are on a journey of turning from family patterns that were not of God into new ones but you are not going to do that in a prayer session overnight in a light switch experience you're going to spend the rest of your life moving the ship in a New Direction and we're not under condemnation we are not under some heavy deadline that God's over my shoulder and you better get this you better get get this no because that's that's not where freedom is happening he said but that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident for the just shall live by faith yet the law is not of Faith you know one of the reasons the law is not of Faith because it's like don't do this do that don't do this do that it's like it's like written out there and a lot of us in our certainty needs we want that God just give me the list of rules and he's like no you're you're you're justified by faith in Christ Jesus now let that righteousness in Christ Jesus have a work now just let it keep infiltrating your life yeah but what's this rule what's that rule Mark is this a sin is that a sin is this over here a sin right that doesn't take Faith but the man who does them shall shall live by them Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law having become a curse for us for it is written curse is everyone who hangs on a tree that the blessing of that trying to highlight this that The Blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are the non-jews meaning we didn't walk in this thing we don't have a natural inheritance uh from those who practice the law from the lineage of Abraham but we are grafted into I'm grafted into it that The Blessing of Abraham might come upon us in who in Christ Jesus that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith so I am growing in my faith each day of what I believe by getting it in my head straight no by taking a step and each day I take a step and I face my fears each day I am turning from fear and moving in faith I'm turning from fear and moving in love I'm turning from fear and moving in hope each day layer by layer I am letting the work of God renew me and stuff is being broken stuff as being but I can't do that trying each day to go okay here's my list of things I need to break these chains I need to break many people are driving themselves batty nutty they're losing their marbles they're down to their last marble because of this and so what I want to encourage Us in is recognizing what Jesus did when he took the whole weight of the curse on him not only the weight of sin but the weight of the curse with it so that today I am called righteous and I stand before God with that righteousness even though I still got stuff that's not uh showing the Deliverance yet why because God operates with me according to Faith you think about your faith and you're trying to grow in faith God actually operates with me according to Faith he sees me he sees me in Christ and he knows I am on a journey of growing more and more and more in that and he goes you know what Mark's going to overcome he's going to keep overcoming and step by step he's going to see the beauty of Jesus Christ in his life amen so I am I have become a believer in righteousness Focus not generational sin Focus do you have stuff in your gen yeah we were born in sin you weren't just born into generic sin you were born with certain sin patterns at work and you see them you see your I was just on the phone with my parents the other day and my mom was telling me a story her interaction with my dad and I was like oh that's OCD look at that and I recognized that's a pattern in my life thank God you're doing a renewal in my life doing a renewal in my life I don't sit there and panic and go okay I got to pray I got to break that I got to break that break that we we get hyperventilated in Superstition can you look at the sins of your generation and look at the sins of your generation and the goofiness of your generation that you see influencing in your life can you look at them and not hyperventilate over them most struggle they get too overwhelmed because we're law base there it is God's punishing me he's angry at me he's creating the sense of separation and there's many Hustlers out there that go yeah yeah you got to pray this prayer you got to pray this prayer you got to pray this prayer and getting people through the car wash and get people through the car wash in the name of Jesus right now in the name of Jesus and we're getting people into these states and you're delivered and then they come back and go I'm I'm still in the pattern oh because you got another door point I don't like that in healing and deliverance I do not like that do not add a burden to people you say this pray this prayer and this is going to happen breakthrough and it doesn't happen you go well you need to do another thing and you need to do this I don't I I I stand against that I stand against that so anyways with that said you said um they wanted me to ask for forgiveness and prayer for multiple Generations back I think that it does it gets goofy um you you repentance is something that's a gift in response to God's goodness not in like searching searching for sin that makes me law-based I'm changed out of experiencing the beauty of the righteousness of Jesus Christ it is so incredibly powerful and so holy and so righteous and so full of glory and I've been brought into that that's amazing the more that I I learn that and let that look because he loves me in it and invites me into it he says Mark come into this righteousness and I go oh my goodness I'm spinning yeah yeah I know I know come in here come in here yeah but I got to repent I got to but God I got to just come come enter in enter in yeah but I don't know I got these and Paul Paul had this problem with the galatian church he says you guys have gone back to all you got to make sure you do this and make sure you do 10 push-ups and three sit-ups and and these prayers and this thing and do this thing over here instead of each day just cultivating relationship because it's by Grace I didn't earn it it's from Heaven it's available to me and it's by faith I'm stepping out today saying yes to it and many of you in your journey need the encouragement that stop your compulsive fussing over what you're seeing inside many of you are going oh there's something wrong with me I I need to get special prayer or you're compulsively researching and checking instead take another step into the new Direction take another step because the person sending this question and many of you out there you are all renewing your Generations by just taking one step at a time and but there's many teachings out there that are making people just feeling more nutty and it's not producing fruit and it's not producing strengthening in faith
