this video was brought to you by my loyal patrons pledge today and you can participate in choosing what video comes to the channel next Link in the description as I was working on my big Thomas and the Magic Railroad review video I dive deep into the production side of the movie I went through pretty much everything the behind the scenes documentaries I watched the whole original work print I read the entire 1999 script both versions write some of the old Sif interviews with the cast members even read some of the goddang book adaptations as much as I wanted to put every microbe of information into that review I came to the realization that I couldn't fit everything in if they weren't relevant to the points I was talking about then I decided that I just couldn't use them I knew I had to do something with all this information though so while I was making that review I had an idea have you all ever heard of an annotated book basically it's a book but filled with numbered annotations throughout it those annotations explaining some part of the production that pertains to that scene like the original inspiration something that changed after its conception why something was changed the history of a character Etc now picture that but in video form that's what this video is this video is going to be an annotated breakdown of Thomas and the Magic Railroad from start to finish marking notes of everything relevant to each scene as we go through it going over everything regarding the script work print differences production trivia and more everything you need to know about Thomas and the Magic Railroad explained all in one video that's the goal here I'm gonna try my best to make this video completely unbiased no opinions or smack talk or praise will be featured here that's what the review is for and I will also not be diving into the logistics about how the universe works this video is purely about the facts of the movie's production I should also mention the order of the deleted scenes talked about will be a little out of order jumping between their placements in the work print versus the script but we will cover everything hopefully I don't claim to be an expert about this movie I know there's people out there that are far more versed in the production than me so forgive me if a tiny detail here or there isn't mentioned all I hope is that by the end of this you'll have learned something new about the movie so without further Ado let's dive in and break down this thing the final version of the movie starts on the opening titles the original script started the movie with a montage of Thomas traveling as Lily our Storyteller begins her opening dialogue the camera swoops past Thomas revealing his face and a whoosh of steam reveals the opening titles the storyboard of this sequence was included on the 2020 Blu-ray release in the work print the movie began with a flash forward to an adult Lily telling her kids the story of the Magic Railroad on a hill above the town of shining time the family looked through pictures in a scrapbook and then the story proper begins Lily introduces many of the human characters including herself Burnett Stone and PT Boomer PT Boomer speeds away on his motorcycle and it fades to the opening credits funnily enough the final version of the intro has more in common with the original scripts showing us a little Montage introducing Thomas however here it happens after the credits foreign Barry London is credited he is the man responsible for the movie happening when he was vice chairman of Paramount Pictures he approached Thomas and Friends series Creator Brett alcroft to write a Thomas movie script in 1996. he later stepped down from Paramount which shelved the film but he later became the chairman of destination films and he approached BR again in 1998. the movie was greenlit and destination films financially backed the film with Brit allcroft Direct in the Isle of Man film commission is also credited many of the outdoor scenes for muffle mountain and the town of shining time were all filmed here Brett decided to check out the Isle of Man after she saw they were offering tax incentives for film Crews she visited fell in love with the island and became the primary filming spots for all the human scenes of the movie hello I missed a conductor and I'm going to tell you a story about trains folks far apart and the Magic Railroad that brought them together Mr Conductor being the narrator of the movie was a change made later in production originally the older Lily was the narrator telling the story to her kids that framing device was axed for time and Mr C became the narrator which was consistent with Alec Baldwin being the U.S narrator of the show at the time seven eight do we appreciate practicing your numbers Gordon that's a good engine this scene of Thomas and Gordon was filmed in a different location originally at knapford three photos exist from this scene and it is unknown why it was cut and re-shot in a different location it's also speculated that these two shots of Diesel 10 enter in and leaving knapford were also from this original scene this shot is Diesel 10 sneaking into the station and scaring Thomas and Gordon and this shot is of Thomas and Gordon watching him depart in fear the shots were repurposed for an unrelated scene later on in the film when Diesel 10 trundles through the station singing to himself but again that's just speculation I'm counting how many seconds late you are Gordon is voiced by improv actor Neil Crone who voices several characters 20 years later Neil Crone would funnily enough play Gordon again in the show's preschool aged reboot all engines go that is a fine how do you do what are the odds what does that sign and say hmm so do a railway really reliable and right on time Gordon tells Thomas to read a sign posted at the station platform there is a lower part of the sign that Thomas fails to read aloud which says sorry for delays during repairs we are making this a better Railway this was tied to an underlying subplot about the Sodor Railway undergoing repairs while this is a plot line that was seemingly omitted it explains why we later see tidma sheds being rebuilt the breakdown train being used for Trackside work and the viaduct needing strengthening this also ties in with the Sir Topham hat Uncle Sam style posters that we see everywhere an ad campaign to enlist people to help out with the railways repairs while cut from the final film Thomas does mention it being said on the sign in the original script I'm meeting Mr Conductor he's looking after us while Sir Topham Hatt takes a much needed holiday Thomas is voiced by Eddie Glenn he originally was voiced by John Bellis an actor from the Isle of Man Bellas was actually the taxi driver for Britain her film crew when they visited the Isle of Man to scope out the area for filming Brit was taken aback by his voice and exclaimed that she had found the voice of Thomas she offered him the role and he took it bellus was ecstatic about the role saying it was going to be his big break in the show business he was flown out to Toronto to record his Lions but test audiences didn't like him saying he sounded too old sadly Bellis was shelved and Thomas was recast bellus was gutted by this but also stated in an interview that it hadn't put him off and he was hopeful something else would come along get out of my way some of the dialogue here was changed from the script after Diesel 10 flies by AI Gordon exclaims the Diesel 10's back originally he said what was that and this led to Thomas explaining who he is I'll explain this more in a bit but Diesel 10's history was changed later on in the movie's production in the final version Diesel 10's appearance is a return to Sodor as he is now notoriously been there before it's only natural that Gordon should know who he is in the original script Diesel 10 startled Gordon so badly that Gordon shot forward and left his coaches at the platform this was cut before filming began name Diesel 10 comes from him being the 10th diesel engine introduced in the TV series following one diesel two DayZ 3 Boko four Mavis 5 Rusty 6 d261 7 Derek eight Airy and nine Bert not the most creative name in the world but hey that's why up and over muffle mountain and hidden deep in a valley is my hometown shining time shining Time Station was to show that vessel Thomas and Friends to the United States in 1989 it was a half hour variety show on PBS that featured a main segment with human characters that worked a train station called shining time a little magical man called Mr Conductor lived in the station Mattel kid's stories about Thomas and his friends on Sodor every time he'd tell a story it would cut to a Thomas episode The Thomas episodes featured will usually have a moral relevant to the greater plot of The Shining Time episode despite being a show exclusively known by the North American audience director Brit allcroft opted to make it imperative to this film and connect it to the world of Sodor if you'd like to know more check out my review there appears a sign the exterior shots of shining Time Station were filmed at castletown railway station on the Isle of Man the station is actually a stone building its exteriors were covered in wood paneling for the film and a fake doorway was added in the middle open sex the railway the station Services is the Isle of Man Railway and it is Narrow Gauge [Music] The Shining Time song was originally sung by a female singer Marin ORD however after the change to Mr Conductor being the narrator Executives suggested the song be changed to a male singer as the audience would have just heard a male Mr Conductor speaking the song was re-recorded with Neil Donald singing and that is the version present in the film however the original with Marin ORD is the version used for the end credits shining time and is on the official soundtrack I hate to burst everyone's bubble but this juggler is not Mike staclassa from red letter media contrary to popular belief here was a shot of Mike from 2003 four years after this scene would have been filmed and he is very clearly much younger than the juggler actor the man on the train blowing a kiss to his wife is the movie's Pennsylvania Union production manager Keith strandberg paint the skies in the original cut of the film there was dialogue over this sequence of Mr Conductor watering flowers this was his official introduction into the movie and the narrator described him as someone who used to conductor likes to lend a helping hand some folks never see him to say thank you as Mr Conductor became the film's narrator later on this little bit of dialogue introducing him was ultimately unneeded and was cut going by the script following this scene would have been the introduction to Lily with her mother in the big city this was so the movie would introduce its three main characters Thomas Mr C and Lily before the story began this scene swapped its placement numerous times being moved to the beginning of the movie in the work print more on that in a bit and by the way I think that you're going to help me and Thomas somewhere in this story two of the shots here are taken from the chase sequence at the end of the film The Shot of Thomas Crossing the viaduct is a deleted shot from right before he crosses the broken section and the close-up is when he looks at Pinchy in the chase [Music] in the script there was some dialogue from the narrator introducing James into the story in which he is described as if he could play in a band I'm sure he'd be a great drummer you weren't concentrating Thomas lucky for you that the buffers were there James is voiced by Susan Roman originally he along with Percy were voiced by the show's UK narrator michelangelos Angeles was flown out to Toronto with John Bellis and others to record his lines my wheels were feeling worn out with work so Sir Topham Hatt told me to think about all the ways I can be a really useful engine similarly to Bella's test audiences didn't like him and James and Percy were later recast help you you'll always need help Diesel 10 was originally voiced by Australian voice actor Keith Scott who delivered a very Sinister Sideshow bob-esque performance because steam engines are cowardly cranky worn out hunks of metal who couldn't hurt a fly test audiences also said he sounded too scary and so Diesel 10 was recast Neil Crone stepped in and originally delivered a Russian accent for the character this didn't go over too well so we did a comical New Jersey accent instead making the character a bit sillier this panned out well and it was the voice that he ended up with no recordings of the Russian Voice have ever surfaced online I've come back to find a lost Steve game engine what I'm gonna destroy her and dominate you Diesel 10 was also originally not the main villain of the film PT Boomer was but I'll talk more about him in a bit Diesel 10 was a secondary villain and his plan was originally much different Sir Topham Hatt actually brought Diesel 10 to Sodor to help out on the railway during its repairs but little did he know that Diesel 10 had other plans he was going to get rid of steam engines by making their lives miserable by bullying them Lane sneezing powder outside the yard and destroying all the railways buffers so the engines would crash instead of bumping into them which of course would have led into him discovering the magic buffers to the portal and the Lost Engine Diesel 10 originally had no idea about the Lost Engine as the original script proves here there is no mention of his plan to find her whether or not this version of Diesel 10's plan ever made it to screen in any regard is unknown we do know that it was changed prior to the work print I've come back to dominate you and to destroy her when I'm done with my plan shall be nothing but useless scrap then of course PT got deleted and so Diesel 10's plan was permanently changed now Diesel 10 came back to Sodor specifically while Topham was away two find the Lost Engine and Destroy her right Pinchy Diesel 10's pet name for his claw Pinchy was never in the script that was all improved by Neil Crone following him and fellow voice actor Kevin Frank being asked to add some comedy to the movie script Brit thought it was so funny she allowed it we won't let you neither will Mr Conductor I want to fetch him now in the original script as Thomas sets off to collect Mr Conductor he has some dialogue to himself thinking about the other engines he describes Henry as one of the grandest engines he knows and then it cut to some footage of Henry departing the docs with a heavy train cranky the crane is featured Thomas then thinks about Toby describing him as one of the bravest engines he knows it then cuts to footage of Toby crossing a rickety Old Bridge with a raging River beneath it this may be a callback to the season 3 episode Toby's tightrope interestingly an episode in the season after the movie called Toby had a little lamb also features a scene of Toby crossing a rickety Old Bridge and lastly Thomas thinks of Percy describing him as little but big and bravery too then cut into a scene of Percy and Toby at the smelters the two disgusts her Topham Hatt taking a holiday splatter and Dodge who are introduced here overhear them and decide to relay this information to diesel 10. all of this of course is not present in the work print or the final version of the film thank you all the scenes of the rainbow Sun were filmed at the Strasbourg Railroad in Pennsylvania in 1999. the engine that portrays rainbow sun is Norfolk and Western number 475. Strasbourg is the home of the full-scale working steam engine replica of Thomas still used to this day at its annual Day Out With Thomas events foreign to talk about PT Boomer PT Boomer played by the late Doug Lennox was the movie's main villain originally while Diesel 10 was secondary and only wanted to make life difficult for the steam engines PT was the one whose plan was to seek out the Lost Engine and sell her parts for scrap metal PT Boomer was ultimately deleted from the final film after test audiences found him too scary for a Thomas film not to mention his plotline only made the movie messy while more about the character is revealed later on in the film he is introduced here in the sequence of Billy two feathers driving the rainbow Sun PT tries to cut the engine off at the Crossing with his motorcycle forcing Billy to throw the engine's brakes on after that ordeal Billy walks over to patch at The Shining time sign and looks back to see if PT is around this shot of Billy looking back to PT is left in the final film patch questions there's something your brakes go on go on this is cut from the final film of course cutting to a close-up of mop before patch and Billy begins speaking interestingly this is the only mention of the rainbow Sun's name in the film it's a mystery to make this land so magical Billy two feathers is portrayed by the late Russell Means most of if not all of Billy's dialogue was 80 yard AKA dubbed over later according to Brett alcroft Executives were unhappy with Russell mean's performance complaining that he mumbled too much and was hard to understand Russell Means character that was just shocking to have his scenes cut down because it's as an executive noted we shall be nameless couldn't understand a dot dot word he was saying many of Billy's scenes were removed or cut short not to mention the scenes of him interacting with PT also being cut so most of the scenes that feature him in the final film are dubbed over I hope your visit goes well Mr C I hope your visit goes well Mr C I better be off to muffle Mountain I promise Mr stone that I clean out his yard today patches played by Cody mcmains according to character notes for the movie's script the character was originally intended to be Irish many of Patch's scenes were cut from the film as they were attached to PT Boomer and frighten my horse either which means I don't think he's a bad man I think he's just sad in the original cut after patch leaves on his horse we got a deleted scene of Billy walking over to the station where he is confronted by PT Boomer it is here PT's motives are revealed and Billy reveals PT has quite a history with shining time he left this Valley a long time ago you nearly caused an accident no no I'm back he refuses to tell PT where Bernat stone is and an angry PT hits the hanging flower pot the same one from earlier that we saw Mr Conductor move to avoid being hit by a woman's head Billy picks up the broken flowers and takes them into the station this man with the dreads here is the movie's key grip Richard Emerson or simply Rico for short oh shining Time Station Master Stacy Jones is portrayed by DD Con who also portrayed her in the original shining Time Station show she is the only returning cast member from the series the two other returning characters Mr Conductor and Billy two feathers are played by different actors Alec Baldwin and Russell Means respectively they were previously played by George Carlin and Tom Jackson weirdly the fourth main character from the show schemer played by Brian O'Connor does not appear in the movie whatsoever nor is mentioned found this child's drawing in an old Locker in the lost and found Wednesday she shows Billy the drawing from the old Locker Billy can be seen holding the flowers that PT knocked down in a deleted scene after they discussed the drawing Billy tells Stacy the flowers need water Stacy questions why they're broken and Billy tells her it's because PT is back in town in the final film Billy is pretty much holding flowers for no explained reason and the scene Cuts after he says and he loved railroading too the entrance to Burnett's Workshop is the ruins of an old building at an abandoned quarry on dalby mountain on the Isle of Man The Arches that form the top of the tunnels you see here were built by the film crew that were placed on top of the ruins I didn't know that in muffle Mountain the mountain that brunette lives at the base of is called muffle mountain and according to the script it is called this because it muffles the sound of trains from the other side [Music] Bernard Stone was played by the late Peter Fonda Peter Fonda was happy to work on this movie saying he's always wanted to do a children's film to satisfy the child in him I'd like to do this kind of film I've always wanted to do a children's film it satisfies the child in me the movie's producer Phil Furley described Fonda as a thorough professional who worked doubly hard to give the director everything she wanted [Music] we are introduced to the Lost Engine lady in this scene lady is a freelance design 040 Tank Engine though other designs were considered model supervisor David Eaves originally wanted lady to be based on a great western 3031 Class A Dean single Brett alcroft rejected this wanting lady to be a small engine concept art depicts her as a 222 resembling a preserved ancient well tank locomotive called gazelle in the end they went with a totally original design for her making her the first engine of the series to not be based on anything in real life did I help you Mr Stone sure you can help me dust her off this scene of Burnett and patch in the workshop was meant to take place way later in the film right after the campfire scene with Mr C and Lily and it being the grand third act reveal of Lady the Lost Engine the scene was brought forward likely so Burnett could give the audience some needed Exposition on ladies history this engine's name is Lady why is she locked up she isn't she's safe from harm the dialogue here was heavily altered in post it was filmed with brunette telling patch about how PT stole and crashed lady in an accident a long time ago and jealous because Lily's grandma left me so he took Revenge he found lady and threatened to destroy her if I didn't let him drive her of course PT was cut so the dialogue had to be changed to be about Diesel 10 instead note how when Burnett says an evil diesel the shot is on patch long ago I made a mistake as ladies caretaker an evil diesel found lady and threatened to destroy her to hide the fact there is no footage of Burnett saying it if you listen closely you can tell what lions were recorded later and which were filmed he chased her used up all her coal this scene was split in two in the final film with the second chunk appearing much later and the whole scene's original placement all right listen you two I uh I got a job for you splodge actually it's a splatter and and Dodge so Diesel 10's Hench diesels splatter and Dodge are introduced in this scene who are voiced by Neil Crone and Kevin Frank respectively splatter and Dodge's props are repaints of the characters Arie and Bert who were introduced in the season before the movie splatter and Dodge's paint was applied directly on top of theirs and in some high quality photos you can clearly see the outlines of Aryan Bert's wasp Stripes underneath after the movie finished the two were repainted back into Aryan Bert for their appearance in the sixth season and onwards I'll get him too with pitch this scene was also meant to be the introduction of Pinchy Diesel 10's claw in the script the original concept art depicted Diesel 10 with a claw that could retract and be hidden inside of his roof this concept is kept in the book adaptation Diesel 10 means trouble Pinchy erupts from under his roof and immediately falls down and smacks him on the head splatter and Dodge are amused by this this of course wasn't possible to create on the model so they opted to have pink Chile on top of Diesel 10 instead it breaks typical British loading gauge sure but at least it looks cool I'd come back to find a steam engine yeah they're everywhere the dialogue between the three diesels is heavily altered from the original script originally Diesel 10 said while fat hat is away the cats that's us will play we're going to make life a misery for those steaming heaps of trash on Wheels this is not present in the work print or the final version of the film but it did make its way into the book adaptation Diesel 10 means trouble Diesel 10 means trouble seems to have taken a lot of its dialogue and ideas straight from the original script of the movie This scene also originally took place much later in the film appearing just after Thomas collects Mr Conductor in the original script Thomas and Mr C passed diesels as their meeting and Thomas warns Mr C to be careful of them even mentioning that Diesel 10 carved his sculpture on the rock face himself well hello Mr Conductor oh hello Billy Mr Conductor is played by no other than Alec Baldwin who signed on to the movie upon taking on the role of the US narrator of the show prior to the film Alec narrated season five and went on the narrate season 6 after Thomas was everywhere at the time his children enjoyed it and he saw it as a wholesome series Alec ultimately agreed to work on Thomas because he liked Brit allcroft so much after meeting her incredibly unusual woman and she told me the story about how she got the books The Railway Series and I just adored Brit and when she said to me do you want to do this show I said sure Phil Furley the movie's producer says that Alec was a true professional onset accommodating and never a problem [Music] the set of Mr conductor's mural House was built to two scales one regular wall size mural was built for most of the human actors to interact with and a second much larger one built for close-ups of Mr C in front of it to avoid having to Green Screen him in the effect is rather seamless I never noticed as a kid that they were different murals important day Mr C it is a very important day I'm going to the island of Soto the original script featured some extra dialogue from Billy here telling Mr C he's never been to the island of Sodor before Mr C responds that it and the Indian Valley have a lot in common anyway I just came to say goodbye I have to go now right now in the original cut of this scene right after Mr Conductor says why yes Stacy I have to make sure that everything is safe and sound on the island of Sodor just as I try to do here Stacy looks worriedly to Billy clearly wanted to tell Mr C about PT's return but Billy insists she not tell him to worry him right before he leaves for Sodor in the final the scene ends with a shot of Stacy smiling as Mr C departs off screen and then it cuts to the next scene the final movie tries to explain Stacy looking worried with this line of narration like Stacy mutt sense danger he didn't want either Billy or me to leave shining time two different dogs portrayed mutt named Bentley and Rita one was used for scenes filmed in Pennsylvania as seen here and one was used for the Isle of Man shoot and on sets as seen here I don't know which is which this is where Burnett's granddaughter Lily comes into our story this scene of Lily and her mom in the big city was filmed in downtown Toronto if became the first scene in the work print sliding up Lily going to visit her Grandpa and the adventure that awaited us when Lily being the narrator was changed this scene was pushed back it's also noticeably shortened and cuts some of her characterization the original scene explains that her mom is pregnant with her baby brother it All Began one rainy day in the big City just before your uncle was born and it shows her talking to her dad on her mom's cell phone showing that her dad isn't at home very often hi Dad what are you coming home oh okay I hope the job goes well according to the original script Lily's father is of Hispanic descent the script also says that the reason Lily is going to see Burnett is because her mother does not want her alone at home while she's giving birth to her next child the original script also featured some dialogue between Lily and her mother here Lily shows her mother the photo of her grandparents and Lily's mother explains the man in the background is PT Boomer this likely wasn't filmed as it was cut from the script's next draft friendship bracelet bracelet that Lily mentions is followed up on differently in each cut of the film in a deleted scene Lily gives it to Burnett at his house after they finish dinner but the scene was cut for time in the final cut it is given to Burnett in his truck in an 80-yard conversation between the two this is a friendship bracelet grandma taught me how to make one when I was little this one's for you thank you Lily Lily is played by Mara Wilson the child star of Matilda Wilson agreed to the role after reading the script and having a visceral reaction to it she describes the film as being one of the funnest she ever worked on due to the atmosphere of the set and getting to visit Toronto and the Isle of Man for it however it was also the last movie she ever worked on due to personal issues in her life she retired from acting following this film and found a career in writing instead far away on Sodor the steam engines were confident this is an alternate angle shot of Thomas steaming into the sunset from the very end of the movie wobbly Wheels puffy Pistons this scene originally features some characterization for Thomas that is slightly downplayed in the film James complains about Thomas collecting Mr Conductor you shouldn't have collected Mr Conductor I should have to which Thomas says you're just jealous James and then it cuts to Gordon putting Thomas down Thomas is lying Little Engines can do big things was meant to be his Arc for the film proving that even a little engine like him can also be a hero this of course does still happen in the final film but is not as focused on interestingly the script for this scene is quite different from either version of the film in the original script Mr C sparkled in during the engine squabbles and orders them to be quiet he shouts silence and Gordon retorts that only Sir Topham Hatt can say that to them in the revised version of the script this scene was changed to have the dialogue be between Toby Percy and Henry Toby tries to stop the engines arguing to which Thomas back talks him Percy yells silence and then Henry hushes him this dialogue was removed completely and changed in favor of the engines discussing the Lost Engine in the final version of of the film okay there they are we'll fix their wagons me neither here we are introduced to the rest of the engine characters in the film Henry Toby and Percy who are all voiced by Kevin Frank comb Fior and Linda Valentine respectively too many fans shock Edward is not present in the movie and isn't mentioned while purely speculation many fans like to thank Edward hauled the train Sir Topham Hatt and his family went away on thus explaining why he isn't there the real reason is that he just was never in the script so no scenes were filmed with him nor any other Engine characters then we find her first Linda Valentine funnily enough was inspired to become a voice actress by James's actor Susan Roman how nice that they got to work on a project together this scene of Harold blowing sneezing powder over the engines at The Sheds is surprisingly not featured in the leaked work print which might mean they considered cutting it all together the scene Cuts after Thomas says huh Little Engines can do big things too dear Mr Conductor where were you my wife said she couldn't miss our little holiday an additional scene of Mr Conductor in Sir Topham hatt's office was filmed in which he smells a jar of Sodor marmalade left on his desk this scene was omitted in favor of the scene of Mr C trying on topham's iconic top hat where were you the marmalade jar is seen in the final here though and the shot is cut momentarily after Mr C places it back on the tray [Music] I mentioned earlier how Tidmouth Sheds being rebuilt was a part of the unused plot line regarding sodor's Railway being renovated while likely unintentional there is some nice continuity here with the TV series in the season before the movie the older tidma sheds with the lower roof is used the roof is raised During the Reconstruction in this movie and the seasons after use the reconstructed tidma sheds funnily enough titmus sheds would be reconstructed again in the next movie calling all engines The Sheds have been built again puff Thomas in reality the actual reason why they built a new tidmas sheds prop for the movie is because the original prop became warped due to the warm set conditions in Toronto and a brand new one was needed the original script notes Mr C sleeps in a hammock in tidmas sheds in the final movie he sleeps in a bed the hammock he sleeps in however made its way into the book Diesel 10 means trouble I like to have a nice cup of hot cocoa would you fellas care to join me this ridiculous scene of Mr C talking to this ball and bat is not present in the script or the work print and it should have stayed that way sorry I couldn't resist hello Twinkle Toes I got a plan and you're not in it the script for this scene has different dialogue between Diesel 10 and Mr C Diesel 10 says you're not wanted here Mr C responds oh yes I am and Diesel 10 replies let me make myself quite clear it seems they shot the scene with Baldwin saying the lines present in the script and changed Diesel 10's lines later you're not clever enough to stop me oh yes I am million not in the original script after the whole ordeal and everyone goes back to sleep Diesel 10 slides back and uses Pinchy to dump Ash into Thomas's funnel Thomas asleep doesn't notice this was meant to tie him with the scene later when he sneezes and comments that he still has a Dusty funnel this scene was cut and the scene was instead tied back to the earlier scene where he gets covered in sneezing powder instead Diesel 10 overhears Mr C talking about buffers in his sleep this is kept in the main book adaptation following this was another deleted scene an extended version of the scene of brunette it marrying the painting of lady playing with the wooden train on his desk and dipping his finger in a glass of gold dust he has in his Workshop the original intention of this scene was to intersplice flashbacks and moments from Burnett's childhood with the present complete with voiceover from the previous Mr Conductor whether or not this is supposed to be George Carlin talking is unclear parts of this scene were repurposed in the final film which appeared just before Lily's introduction in the big city brunette leaves his workshop and walks down to his house Burnett arrives at his house to find PT Boomer there ready to confront him surprise to see me not really the script depicts it but the scene does not appear in the final film or the work print [Music] the Big City station scene was filmed at the main Amtrak station in Harrisburg Pennsylvania on September 12 1999 Norfolk and Western number 475 was brought here from the Strasbourg railroad along with the rake of strasbourg's coaches for filming [Music] must feel Lily's journey to shining time featured several pieces of characterization that were cut from the final film including this scene of her looking at this photo of young brunette Tasha and PT complaining to herself that she doesn't want a baby brother and her admiring patch on his horse in a field the train passes [Music] where's the windmill this random location that Mr Conductor climbs to is called rainbow Ridge as name dropped in the original script I'll be rich Burnett in the original cut following this scene was one of PT digging his way into brunette's Workshop patch notices him from afar that's the stranger I better tell Billy and race is a way to warn Billy about him this scene of course was cut so in this scene the dialogue in the final is very different from the work print and the script all three versions are different so what I'm going to do here is show all three versions back to back here's the dialogue as per the script so what are we going to do now little Thomas Mr conductor's fallen off the wagon and it's all your fault Diesel's going to destroy me we need help who's going to give it to us we'll help each other that's what Sir Topham Hatt would want pity he went away in the first place actually I'm very well thank you James and now I have to find Mr Conductor again before diesel does the original dialogue explains why James is wearing his worried expression I also find it interesting that Henry has no lines the work print changed the dialog to this which isn't too different from the script so what are we going to do now little Thomas Mr conductors lost his Sparkle and now he's gone and left us too diesel will destroy me I need help who's going to give it to me I think we're all in danger and maybe the last engine can save us really then the Lost Engine must be even bigger than me oh no now Thomas is getting ill I've still got a Dusty funnel that's all now I'm going to look for Mr Conductor and the final is this which has drastically different dialogue smile you Steamers it's a sunny day it's not Sunny because Mr C's not at the Windmill I look I think his Sparkle's all gone my Smoke Box doesn't feel Sunny it feels stuffed up nasty fumes from dingy Diesel and Diesel is after the Lost Engine and if he finds her I fear that will destroy us all what even an engine as big as me yes Gordon even you Say It Don't Spray It Thomas I've still got sneezing powder up my funnel now I'm going to look for Mr Conductor let us get back to work that's what he would want of course all these dialogue changes happened after they changed the story around for the final Thomas interestingly Birdie's driver and passengers are not represented by real humans this is the only instance in the movie where the static human figures from the show appear on set in the movie in the original script following Thomas and Birdie's encounter we are introduced to George the steamroller waiting at a Crossing George angrily tells Thomas to slow down and then goes on his way grumbling that Railways are no good Thomas yells back to him you know you like us really George's role in the film was completely cut in the next draft of the script and no scenes were filmed with him [Music] Beach that's it that's it Mr C having the idea to call Junior occurred very differently in the original script in the movie he has the idea after eating vegetables a sentient rabbit leaves for him in the script he has a conversation with Thomas and in mid-sentence remembers JR this scene was also cut by the script's next draft after this scene in the original script we have the infamous roller rink scene George enviously watches Gordon spin round on the turntable at Hidden The Sheds Diesel 10 with splatter and Dodge slide up beside him diesel 10 promises George his own turntable turned roller rink in exchange for him smashing all the buffers on the island so the steam engines crash and George agrees this of course was cut by the script's next draft junior is played by Scottish actor Michael E Rogers originally according to script notes Junior was meant to be English which is interesting because they seem to be going more for a california-esque surfer dude type with him but since Michael Rogers was Scottish they changed his nationality following Mr C and Junior's conversation on the phone is a deleted scene where Junior takes one last look at the beach Sun before going on his Adventure I'm one last sip of a summer Sunday he attempts to drink from his giant milkshake which pours all over him when the seam was cut Brit allcroft apparently took actor Michael Rogers out to dinner as an apology for making him go through all that and had not even being used despite there being numerous deleted scenes this is interestingly the only deleted scene present on the original DVD home release shining time what does that mean Lily does not arrive at muffle mountain and gets off at shining time instead a deleted scene of Bernat phoning Stacy asking her if Lily is there was filmed which of course led to Stacy approaching Lily in the station the scene does not appear in the final film or the work print and according to Brit allcroft it was cut for time she was rather upset it wasn't used as it showed Bernette actually cared for his granddaughter without it he comes off as rather cold to her in the film another scene occurs here in the original script of George smashing buffers Diesel 10 splatter and Dodge watch him George worries he might hurt someone and it's clear he's beginning to regret helping them in a deleted scene Stacy returns Billy's map to him after dropping it in his earlier scene with PT she warns him to keep it close so PT doesn't get a hold of it in the original cut this leads into patch riding in on his horse and alerting Billy he saw Boomer on the mountain he then questions the mysterious abandoned rails in the meadow Mr two feathers why are there two lines in the middle of this Meadow which is followed up on later when Thomas runs along them into the Magic Railroad you must have gotten on the wrong train I better take you back to muffle Mountain following Lily meeting Stacy is another deleted scene where Lily meets Billy and Billy explains to her that mutt is his dog she tells the two that Junior is back and Billy comments how it's been a long time since Juniors come around to visit them Stacy and Lily leave to go meet Burnette and as they walk out Stacy explains what a shining time is to Lily it's the beginning of a journey this scene does not appear in the Final Cut or the work print that uh engine she's in that mountain isn't she in another deleted scene PT Boomer confronts Burnett at his truck at this intersection he tries to get Burnett to tell him where the Lost Engine is but he doesn't oblige Stacy with Lily drive up and Lily questions who that man is to which Stacy Says PT drives off in anger and Stacy brings Lily to Burnett in the final film this all still happens but the confrontation with PT is removed PT on his motorcycle is reworked via ADR to just be some man that Burnett gives directions to [Music] this isn't Doug Lennox on the motorcycle here it's the film's production manager Noella nesdali wearing PT's clothing Stacy you said I wish oh yes I wish you'd come back and see us tomorrow at shining time Stacy's real intention with her I wish line is as far as I could find never followed up on in the film The work print or the script hey Grandpa I saw I saw this really cool guy down at the station is really little and kind of golden after Stacy leaves Lily with Burnett they both share some dialogue in a deleted scene in which Lily excitedly tells him about meeting Junior at the station can you believe that I used to believe that I'll only believe what I can see following this scene in the original cut are several deleted scenes cut from the final film next is one of PT Boomer on an excavator digging into the mountain to find Burnett's workshop and after that is the rather awkward dinner scene between Lily and brunette in this scene Burnett reveals why he lives on the other side of muffle Mountain how come you don't live in the valley I don't like trains and Lily gives him the friendship bracelet she made earlier then while Lily is in the kitchen Burnett looks at a photo of his deceased wife Tasha and then it cuts to a flashback of the young couple dancing together composer homie man talked about how he composed a whole song for this sequence titled some things never leave you the whole scene was cut for time but the song Still appears in the film in the background on Burnett's radio in this scene [Music] the song in full is featured on the official soundtrack following this scene would have been another deleted scene this one of Stacy and Billy looking at the photo of young brunette Tasha in PT on Shining time stations platform Billy tells Stacy the backstory of how Burnett and PT fell out because of a quarrel regarding an engine and then Stacy notices the trees at shining time losing their blossoms the engines on Sodor had her very much in their thoughts according to the script a musical number featuring the song Night Train was meant to occur here but was scrapped very early in production probably a good move since the really useful engine musical number occurs only two scenes later Thomas I was thinking the conversation between Thomas and Percy at knapford happens differently in both Cuts in the original cut Percy races in and apologizes for being late owing it to something being wrong with the points I'm sorry I'm late Thomas but there was something wrong with the track switches and I went the long way around Thomas then brings up Mr conductor's Gold Dust and the Magic Railroad Percy I I've always thought that gold dust is all Mr Conductor needs to travel here but maybe he's really supposed to travel on the Lost Engine and the two conclude he must travel to Sodor on a secret Railway according to the script this shot of Percy traveling over the points was him being sent down the wrong line due to the faulty switches in the final Percy is not late and he is the one who brings up gold dust and the Magic Railroad I was thinking how does Mr Conductor travel here by Gold Dust but if there's a Lost Engine maybe there's a lost Railway too this was also originally the scene that Diesel 10 found out about the Lost Engine and the Magic Railroad in which his whole plan changes and he calls for a meeting with splatter and Dodge at the smelters in the next scene according to the script he tells them to find all the buffers on Sodor and smash them this dialogue is also present in the main book adaptation and Diesel 10 means trouble [Music] [Applause] instead of causing the shed to collapse Pinchy whacks a pile of scrap that comes crashing down and blocks Diesel 10's path this original version of the scene appears in you guessed it Diesel 10 means trouble [Music] the really useful engine musical number halfway through the film consists of b-roll and Alternate angles from other scenes in the movie this shot of Thomas shunting trucks is from the scene earlier where Gordon and James belittle him this shot of Henry reversing into a sighting beside Gordon is from a scene later in the film when the two were snickering at diesel 10. this shot is an alternate angle of the knapford scene at the beginning of the movie all the engines trains are exactly the same in both shots oh thank you Thomas special call will make me feel much better Henry needing special cold is a callback to the first season in which Henry needed special Welsh coal to run properly due to his small Firebox however the problem was fixed after he had an accident and was rebuilt at crew in The Following episode Henry is clearly in his rebuilt form in the movie making him needing special coal a glaring continuity error Henry needing special coal is something the show would incorrectly refer to after the movie being the focus of episodes such as it's good to be Gordon and Henry's happy coal this continuity issue would finally be addressed and put to rest in the 2013 movie King of the Railway in this passing line of dialogue don't tell me he needs special coal again no Gordon that was fixed years ago in the original script this scene occurs right before the really useful engine musical number instead of right after hello Percy Oh Thomas I've been worried about you birdie says you lost a cold truck today this conversation between Thomas and Percy happens much later in the original cut shortly before Thomas finds Junior and Lily [Music] the viaducts scene in this movie is nicknamed The Big Dipper as per the original script the prop itself was repurposed in the jack-in-the-pack spin-off series as a smaller Bridge the much larger gauge 3 scale pack props pass under here in the episode Jack owns up we see the gauge 3 Thomas prop passing under it giving us a much greater idea of just how much larger these props are compared to the regular gauge one ones [Music] a special effect is added here when Mr C Cuts one of pinchy's hydraulic cables as shown in the work print he cuts the cable and oil spills out of the tube in the final they replace the oil with a water gushing effect added on top of it the oil Splat and oil dripping from the pliers can still be seen clue to unlock the source of the Gold Dust Mr C finding the clue to the source of the Gold Dust at the Windmill was a change from the script the script says that he finds it in an abandoned Wagon at the top of rainbow Ridge while this was changed is unknown yeah yeah this scene of the three diesels does not appear in the work print however it does appear in the script but the context is different in this scene originally Diesel 10 was outlying his plan again for the three diesels in the Final Cut the context was changed to Splatter and Dodge being upset at Diesel 10 for letting Mr C Escape both scenes end with Pinchy hitting the colopper and causing coal to spill out however this scene of splatter and Dodge being upset with diesel 10 does appear in the original script and the revised script each in different locations yeah it gets confusing in the original script this scene takes place at the Docks Henry's trucks are being loaded by cranky and Thomas and Percy are nearby splatter and Dodge are there and confront Diesel 10 about letting Mr C Escape Diesel 10 lies and said he did it on purpose cranky accidentally missed fires and his crate lands on splatter and Dodge covering them in smashed fruits and vegetables Diesel 10 thinks it's funny and then he quickly recomposes himself he says play times over splodge and the three go away Thomas and Percy then discussed the buffers which of course is changed to a different location entirely in the final film in the next draft of the script this scene is changed again Henry Gordon and James are all busy with their work James is shunting trucks of oil drums splatter and Dodge confront Diesel 10 about Mr C Diesel 10 says his next lesson how to stop being stupid lion and then he rolls forward not paying attention and crashes into James's trucks getting oil all over his face from what I understand the revised script from August 1999 is what they filmed to it seems this shot of Gordon and Henry are from this scene and they spliced it together with the Coal Hopper scene to create one big meshed scene this would explain why Henry has somehow teleported beside Dodge here if they did actually film this full scene no shots or photos of Diesel 10 crashed into the oil trucks have ever surfaced online didn't she mm-hmm yes here's another deleted scene where Lily tries to pick Burnett's brain about her grandma Bernat lies to her and says he can't remember Lily gets angry with him and runs off which leads into the next scene of her meeting patch [Music] features an extended sequence of Lillian patch riding his horse in The Shining time in this scene the two discuss how they've both heard ladies whistle in the valley grandpa says the trains don't go up that mountain but but what Lily last night so it's not just me the scene is massively cut down for time in the final following this is another deleted scene of Lillian patch arriving at shining time and being greeted by Billy PT is also there buying explosives from an unnamed Man Billy tells Lily and Patch to go while he handles PT they argue and then PT rides off on his motorcycle this scene does not appear in the work print but the footage of PT buying explosives and drying off on his motorcycle were recycled for the intro in it this is the first on-screen appearance of the titular Magic Railroad the Magic Railroad in these scenes is portrayed using several map paintings layered on top of each other and the humans are green screened in CGI is used to enhance the lighting inspiration for the overgrown look of the dying Railway came from a location known as the green tunnel or The Tunnel of Love a stretch of Railway track closely surrounded by trees and Greenery in Western Ukraine for the scenes in which humans travel on Thomas a giant life-size version of Thomas's cab was built it seems that two versions were built one fully painted and one that was fully green to Green Screen humans into shot the green screen one could have been a test that didn't go over well as it doesn't seem to have been used in the final but there's not a lot of information about it online [Music] a life-size Diesel 10 roof was also built for the same reason to be used in this scene with Junior and for PT Boomer later on in the chase sequence I don't know what eventually means but but it sounds very very long Thomas's Infamous eventually line is not in the script in the work print he says Oh Mr Conductor you don't know diesel like I do I'm sorry Mr Stone she wasn't at the station when I went back for her rule finder don't worry another deleted scene occurs after patch tells Burnett that Lily is missing in the original cut after he relays the information PT appears and offers patch money to tell him where the entrance of Burnett's Workshop is forget it Boomer you'll never catch us directly after this is another deleted scene of Diesel 10 speeding through the night with Junior aboard him apparently Junior hung on to Diesel 10 for dear life for an entire night and following that is another deleted scene a patch running into shining time and telling Stacy and Billy that PT knows where Burnett's Workshop is he says he can't find Lily and Stacy says she suspects Lily went back to the island of Sodor with Junior Brave I am brave Perseus dialogue here is different in all three versions of the movie in the script he has a little monologue trying to pep himself up in the work print he says why me why me why me why me and he finds splatter and Dodge quite quickly the final version is extended showing more shots of Percy traveling through the night and he gives himself a pep talk as he goes Thomas says I'm brave so I'm brave alrighty partner you keep me coming through pardon me the Tumbleweed near the buffers inexplicably being able to talk was again improved by its voice actor Neil Crone and Brit thought it was so funny that she kept it in to be backed by some this dialogue between Lily and Mr C occurred much earlier in the original script right after Junior flew off the windmill I haven't told Junior this but soon he'll grow as weak as I am the campfire scene has some extended dialogue in the original Cuts Lily asked if Mr C really does love Junior so you really do love Junior don't you yes even though he makes me mad sometimes but that's what families are for someone to be there for you in the bad times as well as the good isn't that right this is a very sweet scene unfortunately it was cut for time lady [Music] that second chunk of the brunette and Patch Workshop scene occurs here note how Burnett and Patch are both wearing the same clothes they were wearing in that earlier scene and their placements in the workshop are exactly the same in the original patch follows brunette into his Workshop after running away from PT Burnett even turns around when he hears patch and exclaims rumor Burnett's lips can still be seen mouthing Boomer in the Final Cut Little Engines back on the Magic Railroad as mentioned before the Magic Railroad itself is a series of matte paintings layered on top of each other as revealed in the work print they originally wanted to use Thomas's prop for this sequence green screening him into place on top of the matte paintings this was done by fixing Thomas to a bar in midair covered in green and having his wheels spin in place the illusion of movement was done by moving the camera past him or towards him very similarly to how they achieved the X-Wing and Tie Fighter shots in the original Star Wars the end result was not as they desired so they opted to use a CGI Thomas instead which gave them much more flexibility with matching angles Etc and thus this is the first time the Thomas series had ever dabbled in the world of CGI the close-ups of Thomas's Wheels however are still of the prop very clever blend of visuals and Lily that's to do with coal Stoke it up to make Steam the original cut of this sequence features a bit where Lily falls out of Thomas's cab on their Journey Mr Conductor needs to Thomas realizes she's fallen and reverses to find her she climbs aboard and they continue on this is not present in the final Thomas fallen off the edge of the cliff was originally caused by an explosion by PT Boomer trying to blow his way into Burnett's Workshop PT sets off the explosion and it causes Thomas to roll down the cliff when PT was cut this was changed to the wind blowing too hard and it caused Thomas to fall very fascinatingly the explosion is kept in several book adaptations of the movie in the main book adaptation the picture depicts an explosion causing Thomas to fall however the text does not mention PT Boomer in a coloring book PT is in fact mentioned and shown being blown away by the blast Thomas descended into the portal in the meadow was achieved by an ATV driving in Thomas's Place billowing smoke everywhere and the CGI Thomas was placed on top of it PT Boomer is also present in this shot driving up to the portal and jumping into it as Thomas descends some digital trickery was used in the Final Cut to edit PT out of the shot the script features a scene of Thomas back on the Magic Railroad realizing he must be on a branch of it and reacting to Boomer following him [Music] the blueprints Burnett is looking at here are actually orthometric drawings used for ladies first gauge one prop a first version of lady was built that featured a shorter Smoke Box a longer running board at the front and cylinders that didn't quite line up with the Smoke Box at some point in production these were all altered but the blueprints here depict that first version I'd like to Lily nothing seems to work the life-size lady Built For This movie does indeed still exist the prop was 16 feet long six feet wide and 10 feet tall and made mostly out of wood it also had a face that could be swapped out with the Smoke Box door although the face never appears in the film the model didn't actually run on railway tracks it had cartwheels underneath it that allowed it to move but its Wheels were freewheeling so the motion would work when it was moved the prop was present at the Los Angeles premiere of the film and afterwards went into storage the thomas-like features of the model were repossessed by the right soldiers such as the face and buffers and the rest was left the man who transported the lady to Los Angeles ended up keeping it after it was moved out of storage and he repainted it into Christmas colors to set up in front of his house at Christmas time with lights on it in 2017 he listed lady for sale and she was purchased by the restore the magic organization she was transported to Florida in 2019 and since 2020 no information on the model's condition or our whereabouts have been shared [Music] like Thomas and Diesel 10 a life-size prop of James's cab was built for this scene so Junior could sit on top of it unfortunately it only barely appears in one shot in the final film this one and it can only be seen in the 4x3 crop like Thomas they did it up in green 2 to Green Screen Junior in for the shot when he lands on the cab roof the James you see here in the final shot is the gauge one prop are you ready no we're not according to an interview with the visual effects specialist Dave Axford James did actually fall off the edge of the set in this scene severely cracking his roof he was fixed quickly and filming resumed the wiki says cracks on his roof are still visible in some shots but I haven't been able to find any Grandma loved her because I loved her but she never took a ride on lady once again the original cut of this scene featured more dialogue from Burnett explaining what a shining time is to Lily he gets really worked up and is on the verge of tears to which Lily reciprocates and tightens the friendship bracelet on his wrists and says Grandpa don't shut up today too these close-up shots of ladies Firebox are not a part of the life-size model these were actually filmed in an Alleyway outside of gvfx's Toronto office a mock-up Firebox was set up and a Coal Fire was lit by no other than the film's producer Phil Furley just like the shots of Thomas on the Magic Railroad originally lady was filmed on a green screen to be composited in the end result wasn't great so they decided to use a CGI lady instead a physical lady in the form of the life-size one does still appear in this shot and in all the close-ups of the humans reference photos of ladies prop from Circa 2004 show her with the green screen block still attached to her chassis meaning these green screen shots were likely the last ones filmed from the model shoot all right and finally we see lady's face lady's face went through several design changes the first design looked like this looks kind of like a moon emoji the second looked like this with more pronounced eyelashes on the edges of the eyes a shocked version of this design was also sculpted clearly these were not light and we ended up with this third rendition that has much larger eyes so Bennett you didn't forget about magic it's safe inside you lady is voiced by the movie's director Brit allcroft originally lady was never intended to speak and would communicate with others telepathically and with her whistle she has no lines in the script this has later changed to help smooth over cuts made to the film and Brit provided The Voice [Applause] [Music] railroad is an interdimensional railroad that connects all Railways around the world via hidden portals as per production notes for the movie inspiration for it came from the renowned lay lines which is a network of theoretical energy lines across the globe linking landmarks basically this but everything is connected by interdimensional Straight train tracks in the concept art the Magic Railroad appears to be in the sky with tracks made up of clouds this of course changed over time to a railway line made up of golden rails through a Fantastical colorful Countryside the portal effect to the Magic Railroad was achieved by having two versions of the same shot filmed one with buffers in place and another with the buffers removed and the rails continuing on into a black hole behind them both shots were then meshed together and the black is removed to give the illusion the engines continue through the buffers this can be seen in a photo of this scene where the black hole beyond the buffers is fully visible the rainbow portal effect is a digital effect added in post-production stop Grandpa salt lady according to the storyboards this scene of the gang meeting up near the buffers was meant to take place at a building with a well attached to it this prop was indeed built and appears earlier in the film near the buffers in the scene where splatter and Dodge find them reference photos of the building exist for whatever reason this was changed to the Meetup occurring at this Countryside rock-faced location foreign cut when Thomas joins up with the others on Sodor Lily has additional dialogue apologizing to him for leaving him behind Oh Thomas I'm so sorry I had to leave you behind come and destroy no yoodle yourself we don't like you yeah we mean that exactly splatter and Dodge betraying Diesel 10 did not occur in the script in the original script the two are demeaning George as he continues to smash buffers George unbeknownst about to smash the magic buffers finally resists until splatter and Dodge to do it themselves splatter and Dodge oblige roll forward and bump into each other Landing onto the road moments later lady emerges from the buffers in the next draft of the script George is cut and splatter and Dodge are still at the buffers when lady and Thomas pass through them back onto Sodor they watch what happens in disbelief and then decide that they must destroy the buffers they both roll forward clumsily crash into each other and derail this of course was changed to them simply betraying Diesel 10 prior to film in run lady quickly and I'm going to help you and here we come to the famous chasing in quite a few differences between the original cut and the final for this I'll keep it brief though in 2015 a full clip of the chase scene from the finalized original cut surfaced online the clip included PT Boomer finalized visual effects and all the original voice work albeit hard to hear under temp music clustered on top it is believed this is a clip from the finalized version of the movie that was screened to the test audiences while we have a full work print most of if not all of the deleted scenes and the original script this clip is the only material from that finalized original cut of the movie to surface online in the original PT Boomer flies out of the portal and lands on Diesel 10's roof his first line that he shot at brunette is how and Burnett responds with no you won't Boomer because the magic you refuse to believe in will get the better of you PT's line is repurposed for diesel 10 in the final now I'll get you burn that stone no you won't because the magic you refuse to believe in will get the better of you PT Boomer was removed from the chase scene so any shots where he has been digitally added onto Diesel 10's roof do not appear however he can still be seen on Diesel 10's roof in various wide shots due to a physical minifigure of PT being placed on him foreign [Music] very interestingly according to the script Thomas intentionally passed over the viaduct to make it collapse and stop Diesel 10. this is omitted in the movie and instead Thomas jumps the Gap epically not really intending to make it collapse the collapse of the viaduct was achieved by having a fishing wire attached to a spring pivot inside it and when released allowed the broken tumbling sections to fall to allow Diesel 10 to grab onto the track you might notice how the claw stretches out way farther here than it has in any other scene in the film prior the Chase and the sequence of Diesel 10 fallen off the viaduct are movie producer Phil furley's favorite scene from the movie it is quote a sequence that still entertains me oh well nice time of the year for a cruise the original script featured a much darker end for diesel 10 and PT right after the bridge collapse Percy appears with Mr C and Junior aboard him they witnessed Diesel 10 and PT in the river below magically change into sludge Mr C in shock questions how that happened and Junior replies he did it with his magic bandana someone along the way must have thought Junior comedian murder was a bit too dark for this film so this was changed by the next draft of the script to Diesel 10 landing on a barge of sludge instead lady you're a really helpful engine Thomas's dialogue to Lady after the Gold Dust is replenished is different in the work print in the work print he said you're quite a lady thank you I think it's pretty obvious why they changed that line now we'll always remember our shining time together the ending of the movie is very different in the two cuts in the original after Lily and Burnett hold the bluebird the scene Fades out and we return back to the older Lily telling her kids the story she finishes the book patch walks up with his horse and the family happily trucked down the hillside back to shining time the scene Fades to the shot of Thomas puffing away into the sunset according to the script the dog that is with the family is named Jeff and it is mutt's great-grandson the Final Cut instead Fades to shining time reusing the same shot of the older Lillian family on the hill but in this instance as just a random family a montage of a busy shining time back to normal plays out as the song's main theme plays [Music] producer Phil Furley cameos at the town's baseball game here a small facade of The Shining Time Station building was built at Strasbourg to achieve this shot since 475 obviously couldn't be brought to the Isle of Man for filming here we have another Cameo this time from the voice of Annie and Clarabelle Shelley Elizabeth Skinner accepting a ticket here from Stacy Jones she was Brit allcroft's personal assistant on the film this little sequence of Mr C finding an ice cream cone in the plant feed box as well as a couple other shots were featured at the beginning of the movie at least in the work print but it's time for all of us to go home just like Thomas the ending dialogue in the final shot is different in both versions in the script and the work print the narrator says sometimes all it takes is a little train engine and the spirit of the child within us to see the beauty in our lives and hope that we can always find it there while John Bellis didn't make it into the Final Cut as Thomas he is still listed in the end credits as transportation coordinator for his role in escorting the film crew around the Isle of Man the end credits give a special thanks to the Isle of Man and the fairies this is based on the experience the film crew had while on the Isle of Man the people of man are very in touch with their folklore and have a great respect for the fairies that live there while setting up to film in a large field location manager Jim Cleary instructed Phil Furley to ask the fairies for permission to film there Furley did so and he came back to Clary and said Jim I'm not sure but I think they said it was okay naturally the fairies were credited in the film for allowing them to film that day and I think that just about covers everything folks I'm sure there's some details that I missed so please if I did list it below in the comments if you enjoyed this video then I highly recommend watching Magic Railroad nerds extended edition edit of the movie which has all of the deleted scenes intact including the ones that weren't featured in the work print it's a really solid edit and it gives a really good idea of what the original movie was supposed to be like link to that is in the description I still don't really love the movie but I will say that I do respect it a hell of a lot more after deep diving into the production and finding out just how much work went into this thing I will tell you this though after two huge videos covering Thomas and the Magic Railroad I think I can go a good decade without having to watch this movie again I'm a bit magic railroaded out if you take my meaning I'll see you all in the next one folks bye
