Holy cow! This guy's awesome!
Heβs one of my favorites. Iβve had the priveledge of photographing him a few times. Hard to concentrate on lighting & shooting when mesmerized. The Memorials were (are?) a great band.
I remember the first time I watched this video over a year ago, it completely changed everything for me, opened up a whole new world of possibilities the matt garstka lesson on drumeo is my other favorite it absolutely changed how I approached the kit, ive been working on implementing all these ideas ever since, im 100% set for life.
The main thing that bothers me about this video is somewhere near the middle of the lesson he goes off on drummers playing fills that don't fit in the genre of the song they're playing in.
At least 90% of his fills during his time in The Mars Volta are gospel fills, which is fine, but it's such a shitty way to put down other drummers while being so hypocritical.
He was a bit all over the place. demonstrated most things super fast and in no particular order. I'm not knocking him, just that I don't learn things well that way.
Also the song he played at 53 min. sounded a lot like SOAD Toxicity.
