Thomas Merch you've (probably) never heard of.

foreign you know this may be a bit of a hot take but I think Thomas and Friends is a brand defined by its merch of course more serious fans know there's lore and a lot more to it but to the average person or maybe even the average fan it may be a certain toy that pulled them in before an episode or movie did and basically no matter who you are if you like Thomas and Friends you probably have that one Thomas toy you played with as a kid regardless if it was Trackmaster wooden railway tow me whatever and when I say the term Thomas and Friends merch there's probably infinite things that come to mind being that there's so much however there's probably a few that have slipped under your radar and today we'll be looking at six of these lines that you've probably never heard of ranging from tiny remote control Thomas and Percy sets to capsule wooden trains you know yeah that's a good place to start we'll go there the Year 2005 saw the creation of the Woody capsule series a wooden toy series made by Bandai which light capsules were sold in gacha vending machines there were six characters made being Thomas Gordon James Percy lady and Emily and none of these locomotives were powered they were all push along or pull along the engines could be connected through a rubber cord however with each engine having a number of removable Parts funnily enough James is depicted with red wheels just like his capsule variant and Emily has a foot plate that is red instead of chocolate that aside though it does seem like a pretty fun brand and it surprises me I've never seen these floating around anywhere especially with how much I love capsule play rail this is basically just the wooden version of that next up we have a range I guarantee you're familiar with I've seen these in Walmarts and Krogers everywhere you probably don't know what they're called though these are the micro rubber engines a very cheap very basic range of vehicles that are made out of completely nothing but rubber their wheels do not move they are Hollow and they do not couple together they're also only available on very strange eBay Lots or in my pizzi books or tattletails books so far there have been three of these made the first book contained Thomas Edward Henry Gordon James Percy Toby and Mavis along with Annie and Clarabelle birdie and I believe Harold while this second book had Thomas Edward Henry Gordon Percy James Emily Spencer Rosie in a lavender Livery with Mavis and just birdie then we got the third more recent book which is Thomas Gordon James Percy Emily Spencer Rosie in a red Livery Nia Rebecca and Mavis aside from being fun I guess and a little cute these toys are basically just strange I'm not sure what you do with them besides maybe put them on a flatbed and have them be pulled around by an actual working train and nine times out of ten these models have very wonky eyes or just something off about them interestingly Toby and Mavis are both depicted as oforos while Spencer is depicted as an Atlantic a 4-4-2 Rebecca does not have a Tinder and no matter what book you get Gordon is cross-eyed they're interesting to say the least maybe one day I'll try to put a z-scale chassis in the Thomas or something that would also require me buying the books though and I don't know good luck with that now everybody knows that marklin made the engines that made the Thomas and Friends props but you might not have known that marklin made their own Thomas and Friends line this being in 2006 and that might be a bit of a generous statement to say you might be looking at this and thinking that's just the Hornby Thomas what are you talking about and it based it basically is but it did run on a different type of track this being Markland C track using three rails as well as featuring markling compatible couplings due to licensing reasons however they were only available in Germany Austria and Switzerland they did leak out into other non-german speaking countries however as some have been found in the UK the range was shortly discontinued however only two engines were ever made this being Thomas and Percy with a bit more in the Rolling Stock Department this being Annie and Clarabelle Troublesome Trucks the Sodor milk tar and fuel tankers as well as a small car assortment they also made a starter set pretty funnily named the Thomas and His Friends Starter Set this may may be the one time in history Hornby didn't steal an idea from someone else and they may be the ones getting bitten off of that's crazy next up we have the brand boss now boss has a brand of canned and plastic bottled coffee found mostly in Japan between 2009 and 2012 however they did come with a free Thomas and Friends toy if you bought one and there were many many engines made in this range just to name a few we have Thomas Edward Henry Gordon a Busy Bee James and a normal James Percy Donald Douglas spill and Bin Emily Rosie with Stanley hero Charlie fashion Dash Ferdinand Diesel 10 Victor you get the point they made a lot of characters they also had quite a bit of Rolling Stock like Annie and Clarabelle Troublesome Trucks the 65th anniversary coach SC ruffy Old Slow Coach coach with a Union Jack and a coach with a banner there were also road vehicles like birdie Harold Jeremy Kevin even Captain a boat and pullback models that were Thomas James Percy Spencer hero Bell Diesel and Diesel 10. oh and Flynn I almost forgot Flynn to me these kind of look like a cheaper Bandai pocket fantasy but honestly still pretty fun the fact they cared enough to make a Busy Bee James Old Slow Coach and like the others before I'm very surprised we haven't seen more of these show up online I mean for what they are they seem pretty detailed now next is a range I've seen on eBay and maybe a few auction sites but not really much recently this is the padlock and key range this range was made by yujin and only sold in Asia they depict engines protruding from a shed with their name above them and each one includes a cold insert Topham Hatt key six of these engines were made that being Thomas Gordon Percy Emily Murdoch and Spencer honestly for the longest time I thought these were just capsules but it turns out they are not and due to the engines protruding from the shed most of their wheel arrangements are not accurate at all funnily enough Murdoch is missing a nameplate and it seems like the overall proportions and definitely the faces are at least inspired from capsule play rail if not directly ripped it should be noted the key does not take out the engine it only unlocks the lock at the top so sadly they're not as fun as capsule play rail I'd say but still pretty interesting and fun to look at at the very least I wouldn't lock up anything valuable with this though and last but not least we have a personal favorite of mine these are the IR Thomases made by Konami in 2005. the range itself is a type of digikue train basically meaning a fun type of RC from what I can tell and the only two characters ever made for it were Thomas and Percy along with a bit of Rolling Stock like Annie and Clarabelle SC ruffy and a single Troublesome Truck there was also only one set ever made this being a larger set that came with Percy and Thomas as well as two papercrafts that made lower Tidmouth station quite interestingly the side of the Box Fort told Edward Henry Gordon James Toby and Henrietta Bill and Ben Mavis and cranky to be made but these sadly all were canceled the range would only ever see Thomas and Percy and I don't know about you guys but I've never seen this Thomas and Percy only on wikis and through very occasional images online from what I can discern in the images each engine has a controller and I'm not sure if those just play sounds or maybe control the engine itself like I said this is a digicue train so that can be presumed but if anybody has or knows of a video with these things in action please let me know in the comments I would love to see how these things work I also don't really know what it is but I really like the look of these engines I don't believe the wheels move I'm pretty sure those are just molded on the side but even still they look like a blast to play with and definitely a range that could have went somewhere if it didn't get discontinued if anybody has any more information on any of these be sure
