Text: This Week at Justice
June 16, 2023 Attorney General Garland: Shortly after I was sworn as Attorney General,
I announced that the Justice Department had opened a separate civil investigation into
whether the Minneapolis Police Department the MPD, and the City of Minneapolis engage
in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional or unlawful policing. The Justice Department is recommending 28
remedial measures that provide a starting framework to improve public safety, build
community trust, and comply with the Constitution and federal law. Associate Attorney General Gupta: To the people of Minneapolis:
Police reform does not happen overnight, and it does not happen without you. It will take time, focused effort, and sustained
commitment. In the months ahead, we will need this entire
community to help us craft solutions that will result in real and lasting change here in
Minneapolis. Today we are here to take an important step
toward answering that call and committing to the task of building out a core feature
of American democracy – an effective, accountable police department that ensures respect for
Constitutional rights, garners public trust and keeps people safe. Attorney General Garland: A little over two years ago, we issued a
Department-wide strategy to leverage the resources of our federal prosecutors, agents, investigators,
criminal justice experts, and grant programs to combat violent crime. Since then, every one of our U.S. Attorneys’
Offices across the country has worked alongside our state and local partners to implement
district-specific violent crime reduction strategies. Deputy Attorney General Monaco: Since its creation, Operation Southbound has
deployed nine Firearms Trafficking Task Forces to eight cities across and along the Southwest Border. Assistant Attorney General Olsen: Section 702 has proven to be an irreplaceable
authority that enables our entire intelligence community to work together to collect, to
share and to use the information that is necessary to protect our country. Text: Announcements of arrests, indictments, criminal complaints, charges or similar which may be described in this video are merely accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Licensed Music: ”Light Tension” by Daniel Burrows, Daniel William David Mallender, and Thomas Richard Hill
