This Teacher Adopted Her Student and Gave Him the Home He Always Wanted - Pickler & Ben

the first time I ended up in foster care they took me from my home my comfort zone and placed me in a home with random people my biological mother and father they didn't care they didn't want me if they did they they didn't show it if you don't have someone that cares enough for you then you're just gonna be lost in the system my first failed adoption it wasn't my fault I still to this day I didn't know what was going on I guess I was hurt because I was really looking forward to getting out of the system so I shut everything down no I did not want to be adopted I didn't want to go to any functions I don't want to do anything ended up in pathways and this is where I met my mom to be we refer to the kids who come all the time as frequent fliers Anthony was not a frequent flyer he'd go get her that's not something we see commonly here one young lady who was a frequent flyer she had been here so much that the officers call her my daughter but she said no trying to get miss Barry to adopt me but she won't Anthony heard this and he said well you can adopt me I said I'm going to tell you the same way I tell her your mother loves you she works hard she does these things for you and he was like no really you can adopt me he didn't have a mother everything happened quickly Casa approached me I decided we try I picked him up we had our first day out and within 10 days the judge said he was moving in and I was excited I can come to her with problems or troubles or anything I need help with I can count on her to be there our relationship is it's really good the people that said I would never amount to anything yeah I want to prove you wrong everyone can change you just have to have to want to if you're a kid they grew up in the system and finally has a new chance at life go for it you never know [Applause] it's first off its it feels great to just say mom but since day one I've always called her mom that's the story that we have but um it's it's outstanding and it's still to this day even though I've been with this so long it's still surreal the feeling of having a mom or someone I can call mom or family it's just like a be a mom I'm enjoying it is it's different from what I've done before I've helped my friends take care of their kids I'm the godmother to so many kids now but to actually have to pick mine up at football practice and then take him to track practice and baseball practice and all those things yeah it's different but I wouldn't trade it I wouldn't have that sense of like worry now you can see and if you like hangs up in the Friends of it you have that maternal whirring oh yeah oh yeah I had that burn stink I think I'm probably the strictest parent on the block so we don't have too much to worry about cuz he follows the rules that's good yeah it's it's it's something too because the foster system you know people always think that it's its babies and it's all I'm gonna adopt a baby and they I think they're intimidated by kids that are in there they're 15 16 years old you're a perfect example of it can work and there's wonderful people wonderful kids out there and the Fosters they need homes that aren't just babies all the time our toddlers like Anthony we're looking forward to with mr. Anthony's future he's going to go to college I'm looking forward to that he's going to college he's headstrong I'm going to the Marines after college even though they go on that and then after that I think I'll be a grandmother so then that's what I'll do the diaper changing Thank You Anthony for sharing your story [Applause] you
