This One Project Totally Changed My Wood Shop

that is just infinitely sexier than it was before [Music] so I have a problem and I want to address it I really do but first I think I need some coffee so here's the deal many of you know recently I moved into a new shop space and it's been great it's wonderful I love working there I have wonderful artists and Craftsmen around me who inspire me to be better at my work and that's the most important thing to build a community around you that pushes you to be better [Music] absolutely that's what I'm talking about God it is just a beautiful morning if all you're ever worried about is the people you surround yourself and you don't give any attention to the space in which you're working the space can pull the energy out of you it can make you feel like you're not worthwhile you're not worth creating for yourself and you are and you should be and so I have this big gray slab of a door that sucks it's terrible it's ugly and I hate it and I want to replace that to go with something that's a bit more interesting that's a bit more inspiring every time I walk into this creative space it just tastes better out of a mug so often when I'm designing an object the first question I'll ask myself is what type of object do I want to make do I want to make something loud and gaudy and Brash attention grabbing attention seeking or do I want to make something that's a little bit quieter a little bit subtler a little bit more subdued that invites you to engage with it in a quieter way specifically in the case of this door do I want to make something that punches you in the face and says hey go do the best damn thing you can possibly do or do I want to make something that asks you to be a little bit better than you were last time you entered the space [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] so for me there are two words that immediately come to mind the first word is wood and that's surprising I know coming from a woodworker but I think there's something magical about the material that we work with there's a reason we fell in love with Woodworking and not metal working or painting or clay or any other number of media you could have chosen there's something magical about wood that I think is our job as Woodworkers to bring out now the second word that's coming to mind is simple the door as a form is fairly limited right it has to be a rectangle and it has to be that size rectangle specifically and so while I admit that not everything I do is simple right some of the more form-based audacious things I've made maybe up on that wall I don't think I want to be reminded of that aspect of my personality every time I walk into this shop space I am admittedly loud in Brash and audacious by Nature that's definitely a part of who I am but there's also that part of me that understands stands that I play second fiddle to the material and that I think is a more important reminder for me every time I walk into my creative space [Music] Honestly though thank God for this thing [Music] thank you I feel like this is an excellent time to acknowledge that Festool is a sponsor of this project so if you want to drink the green Kool-Aid and go purchase any of their Fantastic Tools you can check out the link below [Music] now this is the joinery I'm using on this project nothing more than a stubbed Tenon with a bunch of dominoes reinforcing it which should really hit that sweet spot between efficiency and strength [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] for a finish I'm doing something a little bit different from what I normally do I'm using a marine varnish because while this door isn't going to be an exterior grade door I may take on a commission later in the year to do just that so I wanted to start tinkering around with exterior grade finishes now I want the application to be as close to my normal finish as possible so I'm going to thin this out by about 30 percent and use it like a wiping varnish [Laughter] thank you foreign let's find out if she fits [Applause] come on I mean come on isn't that just infinitely better than what was there before I'm glad I got that one done friends it was a fun one and it changes the way that I approach the space it livens up the space a little bit in that well that was the whole bloody Point wasn't it till next time friends [Music]
