before you go out and buy a bunch of camera gear like buying a rig let me tell you you're going to spend way more money than you ever thought you would but then what if I told you there was a camera that could potentially save you thousands of [Music] dollars look at this camera and this is not the camera I'm talking about but this is the camera that basically launched my creative Journey but then I took myself a little bit more seriously and I bought an entry level Canon 80d then I bought a couple lenses and about 2 weeks after I quickly realized I was outgrowing the camera because I wanted to start filming video more that camera barely had any video capabilities at all so then I saw that the Lumix gh5 just came out shot 10bit 4K 30 no other camera in its class could do that at the time so what did I do I bought that camera then I had to buy a metabone speed booster which is an adapter so I could take all of the lenses that I invested into from Canon so I could adapt them onto that mount and as time went on I eventually started to use Sony cameras and I was like oh my God the autofocus is just ridiculously amazing so I jumped ship again and sold all of my camera gear and bought a Sony A7 S3 and a sigma art 24-70 and in the process I bought little things like an external monitor a camera cage so I could rig it up to have like a film making rig some filters like a promist and Peter McKinnon variable ND version 2 but I kind of wish I didn't have to go through all of that trouble to realize that I should have just ended up in a specific place and the other day I sat down and I thought to [Music] myself if I could give myself advice when I was just starting out it would be to understand that you don't have to believe the hype and have the best gear the most expensive gear to get the best bang for your buck one you want to look for a camera that is full frame that preferably has dual ISO so it performs well in a lot of lighting conditions a camera that potentially can shoot raw recording internally or externally with an SSD because the color information is incredible compared to a lot of other cameras out there that can shoot for example 10 bit log preferably a camera that has a nice big large LCD screen on the back that has waveforms and false color so you can nail proper exposure every single time a camera that you can have multiple accessories attached to it with a cage because when you start taking film making and cinematography serious you're going to want to actually end up having a bunch of accessories or at least have the freedom to be able to attach accessories to the camera as your film making career evolves and also Al most importantly something that isn't going to break the bank Cinema cameras out there today can cost from $40 to $50,000 plus tens of thousands of dollars of lenses so the camera I would recommend is if you haven't figured it out yet I have my hands on the latest Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K it's a full-frame camera it shoots open gate meaning the camera uses the entire sensor to film which is really helpful because if you're shooting 6K in open gate say you're shooting landscape but you want to make something for social media you can easily crop in not lose detail and have a ton of flexibility to reframe whenever you want and that's of course applicable for long form content that you'll see on YouTube my first overall impressions of the camera so I've had this camera for a few months now when I first got it my first impressions are holy crap this thing's actually a lot bigger than I thought but that's because I'm comparing it to the smallest hybrids that you can buy but the thing is it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges when you take for example like the Sony zv1 and you compare it to something that's more of like a cinema camera both are fantastic cameras it just really comes down to your use case another thing I quickly realized the camera is really designed for you to be behind it this is not a vlogging camera by any means my first impressions of when I started to grade the image in Da Vinci resolve I I was blown away I felt like I have stepped into a whole another World of Color correcting and color grading it's insane how far you can push this image and bring back the highlights and bring up the Shadows retaining so much detail and also just quick note there's an optical low pass filter in this camera which helps filter out IR pollution this camera has a built-in LCD screen on the back which basically serves as an external monitor that's another cost that you would have to buy if you wanted to rig out one of these hybrid cameras which also kind of explains why it's so big because it's a pretty big screen it's really nice and it's a touchcreen which is really helpful when you're trying to quickly go through the interface unfortunately you can only use a CF Express card or plug-in and SSD to record the footage on the camera CF Express cards are a little bit more expensive I have a 160 gig CF Express card in the camera as we speak which only gets about 30 minutes of recording when you are filming in the highest compressed raw setting I think I only get about 10 minutes if it's in the low compressed so take that for what it is I got the brand new tilta Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K cage for this camera and it fits perfect and it looks sexy as I also bought the SSD accessory that goes on the top or on the side where you can just connect in any solid state hard drive where you can just record it fits perfectly on the camera and it's much cheaper than a CF Express card some concerns I saw online with all pocket cameras all Cinema cameras from Blackmagic is the battery life now there are a few solutions to this one is you can get the battery extended grip which holds two extra batteries so ultimately you have the battery in the camera and the two here which gives you three times as much battery the only downside is is it makes the form factor even bigger but with that said I have walked around it's winter time right now but I have walked around with this camera turning it off turning it on only using it when I need and honestly for running gun kind of stuff where you just have the camera a lens and you want to film there there's plenty of battery life within this camera if you're doing a talking head segment like I am right now or if you're filming an interview or doing a podcast there's actually a port on the side where you can plug in external power and have power forever and so that's something simple that's an easy fix and in most of those situations you'll have an outlet to plug into oh yeah fun fact real quick if you do get an extended battery grip or if you want to just leave your battery in the actual camera you can just plug in that external power and it will charge the battery in the camera and and charge the batteries in this grip when it's attached the camera does come with like a little plastic charger nothing special but it gets the job done a few things to note real quick is the camera films proxies along with the raw files in the camera so when you go to edit this footage IND Venture resolve the proxies automatically get loaded in and you're editing off of the proxies which makes the workflow and editing and compositing much quicker there is no image stabilization with this camera but there is gyro stabilization avail ailable if you use this with da Vinci resolve there's actually a little drop down and basically the camera saves the gyro data of when you're filming and you can stabilize it using that feature in Vinci resolve the cool thing about it too is it's not overwhelming stabilization you can tell it's somewhat handheld if it's really shaky but it's kind of like the perfect blend of super stabilized but also just completely shaky lastly the one thing I wish this camera had I bet you guys can guess is autofocus well continuous autofocus this camera has autofocus it'll focus once to that subject but then that's it black magic please if you can in the future make some cameras with continuous autofocus one other little detail this camera only comes in L Mount I have a feeling that they're going to really start pushing the El mount in their future cameras so I bought a 7 Artisans 2.0 35 mm which is kind of like a good allaround lens I do think I'm going to invest into the sigma 24 to 70 just so it's a little bit more of a run and Gun style but for a good all-around prime lens the seven Artisans is great it is just a little heavy but you know what I kind of expected this whole thing to be a little bit bigger than normal oh and another detail so this camera cost and included in that price is the studio version of D Vinci resolve which retails for $300 online if you just buy it Standalone so the fact that this camera cost this much with da Vinci resolve is incredible there's no no other camera on the market that can film internal raw have all of these features at this price point a few more final details about this camera and my final thoughts this has 13 stops of dynamic range which is the exact same as my other Sony cameras as far as the resolution and frame rates I'm going to put up a screen grab for you to read real quick you can check out all of those specs now and although they both are 13 stops of dynamic range the fact that this shoots 12bit raw in my opinion it is far more Superior than any camera out there at this price point now not only does this camera shoot video it does have the capabilities to shoot photos there's a little shutter button at the top of the camera right next to the record button and it's kind of weird because when you go to take a photo there's no haptic feedback there's no flash on the screen you don't hear a shudder you just see like a little icon on the back of the LCD screen that tells you that you took a photo now you wouldn't want to primarily use this as like a photo camera but the photo capabilities are there now as you guys saw earlier on in the video I did have this on a Gimbal and I will probably never put it on a gimbal ever again it's just extremely heavy and it's just not for my kind of film making but I will be keeping it in this cage I will always record to an SSD as that is the best workflow just to basically take it off the camera plug it into the computer and start editing your files and also I'm in love with this cage it just feels perfect in your hand if you're looking to futureproof yourself your film making your budget this is the best camera that you can buy at this price point that will check 90% of the boxes that you'll need for a true film making camera especially if you're using DCI resolve because Blackmagic cameras are designed specifically to be integrated with the workflow of Da Vinci resolve I'm really excited to use this camera this year on a bunch of new projects so stay tuned like And subscribe I'll see you guys in my next video
