Very nice... with this approach they don't have to encode for the optic nerve as the retina does, and can prove the concept. Bypassing that eliminates a lot of complexity, but also you lose significant efficiency.

When we can stimulate the optic nerves with the "right" signal, then you can avoid needing a particularly high resolution "array", as the retina sends much simpler signals (almost like a compressed video), which would require less bandwidth for higher resolution, etc...
