[Music] hi guys and girls craig lieberman coming back at you with another episode so if you spent any time on social media you've probably seen people make assertions that owning an r35 gtr is an expensive proposition of course when we talk about a car like the gt-r being expensive to own we must remember that the term expensive is a relative or subjective term it depends on who you're asking certainly buying one new is not cheap they start at about a hundred eleven thousand dollars today the prices for used cars are now close to what it would take you to buy a brand new bmw m car or even an amg bed so it's not outlandish i was looking at values on autotempest.com recently and i saw what they were going for and i was looking at 2015 models like the same year in my car speaking of auto tempest i'm not sure if you guys have been watching car trek with ed bowlian freddie tavares and tyler hoover but you should if you're not doing so already the next season starts monday and this season they've been asked to buy a ferrari for the cost of a camry hey maybe they can buy a gtr for the price of a camry next season i'd love to have some input on that anyway check it out if you're not already following it frankly it's one of my favorite shows programs like car trek set the example for what all youtube car tents should be it's just fantastic sorry but i digress of course what you will spend to buy an r35 gtr is just part of the consideration maintenance costs are what people are talking about on social media oh it's too expensive to own it's crazy it's all the kind of um what are they do people get crazy about it so is an r35 gtr expensive to own and maintain well if you're accustomed to spending a hundred dollars a year on oil changes for a honda civic and about 160 dollars to buy a set of four tires every two years then yeah the gtr is expensive by that standard but if you want to compare apples to apples there can only be a comparison when you look at the data from comparable cars and you cannot compare a utilitarian honda civic to a high performance gtr it's just on a completely different level as someone who's owned cars like a bmw m3 a couple of mark iv supers a couple of lambos and a porsche i've got a pretty good idea of how the cost of a r35 gtr would stack up against other older higher-end cars but what we really need to look at is how a seven-year-old gtr stacks up against other current high-end cars it's only fair my 2015 gtr was purchased on valentine's day in 2014 it was brand new i'm the original owner nearly all of my maintenance has been done at trinity auto sports in anaheim california or at the hand of a fellow by the name of chris heinberg who is a gtr master technician here in southern california everybody knows the guy he's currently at temecula nissan so let's go over the costs okay first understand that my car gets driven about seven thousand miles a year i drive it almost every day i've done maybe five track days with the car total i don't abuse it but i do occasionally drive it hard so let's start with the tires people like to talk about that the gtrs come with dunlop run flats 250 5540 up front and 285 30 20 in the rear these tires currently sell at tire rack for about 1900 bucks for a set of four i looked it up this morning the run flats are notoriously noisy and they make you feel like you're driving fred flintstone's car while they don't provide the best grip they are a compromise between street performance and track needs so it's somewhere in the middle however they lasted pretty good these tires last at 11 000 miles i replaced them with toyo r triple h not the r8r but its predecessor the r triple h these tires were even noisier but the grip was superb especially after you got them warm a set of 4285 3020 toyo r880 cost 1700 bucks i bought a second set for a track use a set that i still have sitting here in my shop the first set of toys lasted about 8 000 miles and this is only because i had a pretty conservative alignment if it had a track alignment i would have got four or five thousand miles out of it one thing about these tires if you get caught in the rain anything above 55 miles an hour is sketchy and standing water is downright treacherous but they're ultra high performance with a very low tread wear waiting so that speaks for itself at 20 000 miles it was time for another set my third set of tires and at this point i switched to the popular michelin pilot sports i think they were the fours or threes i forget the sizes were now up to 285 35 up front and 335 30 in the rear this set right about 2 100 bucks those tires lasted about 14 000 miles and in 2020 i replaced all four again now in my seventh year of ownership i have spent seventy seven hundred dollars on tires not including the set of racing tires after five track days the brakes were done eighteen hundred dollars was spent on new ap racing j hook rotors which is a common mod for this car another 700 bucks was spent on endless mx 72 brake pads i recently replaced those pads again so add in another 700 bucks not including labor and this basically summarizes the wear and tear item now let's look at just the maintenance items just the things we need to do regularly on an r35 gtr oil changes are 200 bucks each not including the oil the labor is higher than it would be for a honda civic because you have to remove the entire under tray up front to get to the oil filter i've now had eight oil changes on this car for a total of sixteen hundred bucks not including the oil training in diff fluid must be changed every eighteen thousand miles and before and after every track event with fluids the job costs nine bucks i haven't done all the services but i've done most of them so i've done three total that's another 2700 bucks so these two items constitute the bulk of maintenance items that i have paid for so far as for the reliability the gtr standard warranty runs for three years and 36 thousand miles for basic things like air conditioner brakes or something like that and the powertrain warranty runs five years or sixty thousand miles my car has been very reliable so far knock on wood i have not had any malfunctions or failures i did however replace all four shocks in 2019 because they were starting to leak and i know that's the beginning of the end so here's the final tally after 48 000 miles of driving including maintenance items pretty much the mandatory stuff and wear and tear items and this will paint a clear picture 7 700 bucks was spent on tires 1800 bucks were spent on brake rotors 1400 for two brake pad changes sixteen hundred bucks on oil changes twenty seven hundred dollars on training and diff fluid changes twenty two hundred dollars for four new shocks for a grand total of seventeen thousand four hundred bucks add an oil and fluids add another fifteen hundred bucks divided by seven years we come up with twenty four hundred and eighty five dollars per year or two hundred and seven dollars a month but if you remove the wear and tear items from this list things like the tires and the brakes you'll get a better idea of what maintenance only costs which when broken down comes out now to 1985 per year which is app which averages out to 165 dollars a month so how does this stack up against other high-end cars by comparison my buddy's mclaren 650s is under a yearly maintenance program from mclaren which runs 1500 bucks but if you just wanted to do an oil change it runs about 600 to 700 bucks a quick google search shows that most 570 and 650 mclarens are costing their owners about 1500 to twenty two hundred dollars a year for service and if you need tires tires for those cars cost about three thousand bucks for a set if you look at ferraris ferrari currently offers their no cost seven year routine maintenance program on model years 2012 and on however there is a catch this is a package that covers only routine services such as oil chains fluids filters and other basic jobs and you have to get the car to the dealer within 30 days of the scheduled service or each visit will then cost you twenty five hundred dollars a typical mercedes cost about nine hundred dollars a year to maintain after the after the warranty period the five year maintenance cost for a 2015 e63 amg runs around twenty one thousand just for maintenance of course if you modify your car your ownership costs are going to go up brake pads and wear and tear items are going to be expended faster and you're going to spend more money like most r35 owners i've added a usual array of performance parts called fbo or full bolt-ons for those who aren't familiar with that term a full 102 millimeter titanium exhaust from benji linney an eco-tick setup on the tune from benji linney 1050cc injectors 3-inch intakes from tie tech a linear visconti e85 kit gritty type s blow-off valves teach works 340 fuel pumps uh what else am i missing gut boost catch cans i feel like i'm still missing something else rampage titanium coolant overflow tank and coolant pipe not for any performance but it's there anyway a set of volk te37 wheels 20 by 10 up front and 20 by 12 in the rear a set of zeo carbon side skirts an esprit 052 w carbon and titanium rear wing it's real carbon fiber real titanium an apr carbon front lip a set of apr carbon canards uh what am i missing and some carbon hood vents and a carbon a license plate thing this comes out to about 19 400 bucks or so so about 20 grand and i'm showing these prices only because the gtr gets a bad rep for being expensive to modify so if you look at the prices to do these same mods or similar mods on a wrx an evo or a bmw you can see that the gtr isn't any more expensive to modify than other high-end tuner cars another thing to consider in the ownership experience is depreciation my 2015 gtr msrp for 107 000 bucks and i paid 100 104 000. nana puts the current trade in value at 63 000 bucks looking online you'd be hard-pressed to find a 2015 for less than 72 000 bucks as of this recording date at 72 000 that means my gtr is worth 67 percent of the original sticker price at 63 000 on the low end that's still 59 of the sticker price amgs by comparison are only worth about 39 percent of the sticker price after five years bmw m cars depreciate almost as fast as amgs if we look at other cars like ferraris and mclarens those tend to hold their value while there is a dip in values in the first few years values will plateau and will usually start to climb in the years that follow that that's just the way it typically goes but most people who buy these cars don't really sweat the depreciation still i wanted to mention it to help paint a more accurate picture of the cost of ownership of an r35 i won't get into insurance costs because that depends on the age and the driving record of the owner so it's going to vary from person to person as for gas prices if you're sweating the cost of a gallon of gas you probably want to look at another car my car gets 15 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the highway and half of that if i'm ea on an e85 and frankly i couldn't care less overall the r35 gtr has been the best car i've ever owned considering the 40 plus cars i've had in my life over the years that is some pretty lavish praise so considering buying an r35 gtr this is the time prices have started to go back up as the future of the r36 is still not clear and there are rumors that are looking good you want to look at 2012 to 2014 gtrs the transmission issues were sorted out by then and the 2015 moved to a softer suspension so if you plan on tracking the car often a 2012 until 2014 was the way to go the 2015 models are a little softer and more daily drivable in 2017 the r35 got a facelift and the interior was updated a bit as well so your choice will come down to personal preferences and what's important to you one other thing worth mentioning is the owners groups over the last 20 years i've been inside the bmw online groups the porsche online groups the mercedes groups the lamborghini groups and so forth and so on i can tell you this the gtr community is the best automotive community i've ever been a part of and everyone is keen to lend advice and support when asked people who buy a gt-r are generally people who have done their research and know that the performance of these cars is superb in fact i've never met an unhappy gtr owner never that's going to be it for this time everybody thanks for watching i hope you'll consider subscribing if you like my content if you'd like to have a look at some of my new merchandise there's a link in the description below and we'll see you next time
