[Music] hey guys welcome back to triple l russell designs in this video i'm cutting a gorgeous mystery log check it out [Music] [Music] hey guys welcome back to the channel today we are cutting another mystery log we think it's an elm tree our friend glenn leemeyer with barking up the right tree service he told us it was a drake elm we've never cut a drake elm here and i believe we've cut one other elm tree but it looked pretty different from this so i'm interested to see what it looks like on the inside the log is very heavy and very dense so it's going to take a lot to get up on the mill but i'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like on the inside the bark it's like thin bark looks like almost like a potato skin versus a regular bark on a tree i'm hoping the inside of the log looks just as cool as the outside when you google drake elms the slabs look look pretty cool so i'm excited to cut this one and i'm going to get up on the sawmill [Music] this is what i was talking about that the bark is really weird right here you can see this is where the forks of the tractor were and it makes it a green color so i don't really know why it does that but it makes me think that there's a lot of water in this log it's also a weird shape it kind of does like a little twisty twisty motion which we'll see if that's going to change the slabs at all the way they look [Music] i had the log all secured on the sawmill the log did have a pretty good taper in it so i lifted up one end if you haven't noticed i am wearing my brunt boots i've talked about my brunt boots in of my previous videos these are much better than the previous waterproof boots i was wearing if you are interested in checking out these boots there's going to be a link in the description below so the first thing i'm going to do with this log today is i'm going to do a top cut open up the log see what it looks like on the inside and then kind of determine from there what kind of cuts i'm going to do for the rest of the log [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] all right that first coat went pretty smooth let's see this is what i was talking about how it has a twisty character in it all right so it's a nice darker color on the middle i'm really liking this dark figure in the middle of the log so i think i'm going to cut the rest of this log into 10 quarter slabs and those slabs can be put together to make a small dining room table or coffee table even with epoxy but once these flaps are finished they're going to be super beautiful [Applause] yeah that's really nice figure in there [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right this slab might be a little bit too heavy for me to lift and you can tell how dense this log is from the sawmill cutting through it so i might need a little bit of help oh nice oh wow check this out you'll see it better once i scrape all the sawdust off but look at that figure on the inside get some dark browns some beautiful red color going through that that's that's actually really really pretty look at that wow that's beautiful this is a beautiful slab it almost looks like a red version of black walnut you have your light sapwood on the outside but a really beautiful dark red figure on in the middle that is going to be so pretty once that's finished i just sprayed down the slab to shoot the intro video and look how beautiful the slab is oh my god it's a feels like a very hard wood but those colors are incredible and i can't wait to cut more slabs out of this log [Applause] this really makes me happy that i chose to cut these slabs into ten quarter slabs once these things are dried and flattened they're gonna be perfect for table [Music] it took us a little bit to get this log clamped down on the sawmill because the weird shape of the wood and how it twists under it was kind of difficult to get it locked down but we have it secured and i'm going to continue my cuts thing let's just [Music] [Music] i'm still breathing even though they tried to leave [Music] i think i'm gonna need some help lifting this one over this log is very heavy you can see the nice dark figure coming through on this side it might seem like we cut a lot off on this end and lost some of the wood but we could probably cut this into some chunks and turn some nice plates or saucers out of it on the lathe but that dark color is definitely coming through on this side especially down here a dark red figure coming through we'll get this cut off the sawmill and i'll make about three more cuts i bet the cut after this one's gonna be really really beautiful [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] oh my gosh oh my god look at that [Music] look at that color it's a really nice dark coloring down here that is going to be so beautiful once that's finished a little bit through here too man that's pretty wow that's wild i didn't expect it to look like this on the inside i think this next lab is going to be the most beautiful one look at that right there in the middle that's incredible that has incredible color in there i'm gonna make one more cut get these bad boys stacked up and show you the true color [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] that was a last cut we're gonna get these slabs off the mill stand them up and show you what they look like i got these four slabs stacked up i'm going to spray them down check it out [Music] [Music] i'm super happy with how these four slabs turned out if this is a drake elm or any other type of elm i'm really glad i cut it today big shout out to glenn leemeyer from barking up the right tree service for bringing us this log if you are in the central florida area and you need a tree service make sure you reach out to him his information will be in the description below these slabs are about five feet tall you can tell because they're a little bit taller than me but i have the book match set right here i can already imagine pouring epoxy down the middle here and making a beautiful epoxy dining room table we're going to get these slabs stacked up and eventually dried in our nile l-200 pro lumber kiln once they're dry we'll take them out we'll flatten them and we'll either make a beautiful table out of them or offer them up for sale that's going to do it for this video today guys if you like this video don't forget to hit that thumbs up button and if you think you know what type of log this is please drop it in the comments section below i think it's a drake elm or some type of elm but i'm really not sure and as always don't forget to subscribe for any of our future videos we'll see you next time you
