propellers have always been noisy but now there's a new kid on the Block toroidal propellers these strangely shaped Twisted propellers making headline news are the new marine and aviation industry Revolution radically quieter than the conventional propeller this new donut looking rotor can Boost energy and power in air and water four times more than a conventional prop in this video we'll explore this new toroidal design but before that hit that notification button and subscribe to this channel now let's get it on propellers have been around for centuries airplanes and aircraft propellers are mechanical devices consisting of several blades revolving rapidly to propel something across a distance humans for centuries have been optimizing these engines starting with boats on water propellers are meant to take fluid typically air or water and push it through using a rotating motion these are in some ways evolutions of the Archimedes screw described in 234 BCE the Archimedes screw shares more similarities with the toroidal propeller which was also utilized by ancient Egyptians hundreds of years before Archimedes they use the design to draw water from Wells with the least effort yet when it comes to revolving devices today there have been few Innovative design modifications in a very long time prop driven aircraft still use Twisted aerofoil bladed propellers similar in design to Bamboo copters that Chinese children were enjoying 2400 years ago there have been remarkably small advances in efficiency over the wooden props produced in Wind tunnels by the Wright brothers in 1903 boats still use screw style propellers with varieties dating back to the 1700s the entry of the new donut-shaped toroidal propeller will undoubtedly be a game changer not just for drones aircraft and Marine Transport but it will benefit wind turbines too today's props are too loud the biggest issue with today's propellers like the ones you see in Choppers and even drones is how they make an awful Ruckus if the future involves multi-copters and aerial propeller-powered taxis it's bad enough listening to the honking of daily traffic humans just don't want another racket in the skies one brilliant research team at mit's Lincoln laboratory understood the need for a silent propeller and wondered if the noise in a multi-rotor could be silenced with a differently shaped propeller the new toroidal propeller after a few trials the scientists at MIT came up with a toroidal design that reduced overall noise levels at a given thrust and noise in the one to five kilohertz band sound emitted by the new design was more like a rushing Breeze than a propeller generating a considerably less invasive noise it would be as low as the noise of a drone heard twice as far in a conventional propeller the sound you hear isn't exactly the propeller it's the tip vortices the trick to achieving the noise reduction was to distribute the vortices generated by the propeller across its entire shape instead of just the tip this makes it fade faster into the atmosphere the phenomenon is known as capitation and is better displayed by underwater propellers or fewer bubbles are generated for the tips of the blades toroidal propellers even draw in fluid from a farther distance yielding greater thrust taking the design a notch higher is how integrating acoustic treatment rings around a props path's periphery reduce the sound even further it also served as a prop guard an added safety feature that's a huge plus point the man who conceived the toroidal design while MIT is credited with this newly Advanced design the credit for the toroidal concept goes to David B surgeon who patented his design of a toroidal prop in 1969. his design was intended for vehicles and sumps but was not commercially feasible due to a problem in Blade manufacturing the this clearly shows how Sujin was way ahead of his time his patent expired in 20 years leaving the design open for further research that is when one PhD student from Sweden named Alexander further improved on the design after finding how it could reduce sound and increase performance with the same number of blades the team at MIT also explored the efficiency factor of the strange toroidal shape to see if there was an issue with thrust and performance the new design they had created was called the b60 they were pleasantly surprised to find it produced a greater amount of thrust than the best standard propeller which was remarkable given that it took a century of development to create the current prop design yet in its early stages the toroidal propeller was proving phenomenal furthermore their looped design not only adds structural stability but also reduces the likelihood of a prop cutting clipping or hooking on anything it comes into contact with you don't want them striking you in the face but there's a slight safety Improvement what looks promising is how it still has plenty of room for optimization and implementation in heavier applications like aircraft can it be applied for commercial use the question that now remains is will the new toroidal propeller be available for commercial use because if so we can expect to see a huge change in the Drone industry especially so don't go getting a new drone just yet check for updates on when the new design will be featured in drone Tech which could be soon the MIT team has patented the design but they aren't sure about commercialization just yet now you need to know the toroidal design is a very complex shape so assembly line production is yet to be established of course MIT is prepared to license the design auto manufacturers who might be interested in getting it in circulation how relevant the new design will be at a larger scale remains to be seen because the production infrastructure isn't there yet to replace traditional propellers on fixed-wing aircraft or even VTOL air taxis one thing can be said for sure with the influx of low altitude aerial transport looping above us in the future how these large crops will affect daily life will be a major issue this is where the toroidal prop sees a major advantage in becoming a potential substitute for warranting faster commercialization the Cheryl propeller one major player in the industry of performance enhancing propellers is Cheryl Marine which has made some stunning advances with its version of boat propellers that use Loops instead of standard blades the company has over the years gone all out on its r d testing its new design against hundreds of propellers and the results were spectacular in the Cheryl propeller there are no tip vortices now vortices are a major reason for energy loss and are one huge component that produces most of the noise in an outboard engine so this means the Cheryl prop is an extremely attractive component in Marine Transport moreover instead of being pushed through it produces the amount of liquid slipping out of the sides of the prop to suck more water through to push a boat further and faster besides increasing the speed of the boat there is the added benefit of reduced fuel consumption by 20 percent which is a big deal if you ask me toroidal propellers can benefit wind turbines one application researchers are looking at is how the toroidal propeller will be helpful in the case of wind turbines wind turbines need to be in a certain region where they must face the wind at certain angles to move that's why a blade pitch with angles between 10 and 20 degrees features lower drive and larger angles along with the wind speed drag rotor blades with an aerodynamic profile will do much to increase the efficiency of a wind turbine it will help create more lift and rotate the turbine faster still curved aerofoil type rotor blades would be a challenge for manufacturing even though they would be ideal for generating electricity a toroidal style prop blade design will further increase aerodynamics and efficiency Twisted blade will minimize the bending force of the wind and will be stronger and lighter than conventional bleeds but because the toroidal design is more suited to push fluid out it would be interesting to see how they could be implemented in wind turbine technology toroidal propellers are the future the research by various companies on the toroidal design suggest it is most efficient for underwater use besides boats the design could also benefit pumps and hydro turbines greatly impacting energy generation and heat pumps Cheryl is already selling toroidal props that have been CNC machined to accommodate a broad variety of typical outboard motors from most major manufacturers the problem is that they are costly in comparison to a regular prop priced at 500 a Cheryl toroidal prop costs 4999 US dollars nevertheless this is a relatively minor component of the overall cost of many boats and given their voracious appetite for gasoline the investment May likely pay for itself quickly while also making the trip much more comfortable for those on board Spectators and Marine creatures below the surface perhaps with new manufacturing technology the price will reduce and we can hope to see the toroidal prop as a common component of the future [Music]
