while the role of land transportation is significant for our sustainable future one thing is clear we cannot prevent global warming without decarbonizing the aviation industry which is expected to be responsible for 25 of global warming by 2050. that's why we must start now this odd-looking airplane from Auto Aviation called Solera 500L is coming to revolutionize traveling Forever by cutting fuel consumption eight times and bringing emission-free electric Aviation incredibly closer thanks to the super smooth laminar flow surfaces High aspect ratio wings and an Innovative lightweight V12 diesel engine the plane gets fuel economy figures between an incredible 18 to 25 miles per gallon better than a large SUV and an average pickup truck but the efficiency will be further improved once Solera is equipped with hydrogen electric powertrain in the second stage the key Secret in achieving Superior aerodynamics resulting in massive savings on fuel and Emissions lies in the egg-shaped design of the aircraft which helps achieve laminar flow on the plane's surface reducing drag by 59 compared to a similarly sized aircraft laminar flow allows for a smoother penetration through the air with little to no mixing of adjacent layers unlike turbulent flow which happens when the flow is mixed or chaotic this enables a massive leap in efficiency speed and range compared to traditional plane geometries Solera can cover a distance of about 5100 miles which is more than enough to travel for example from Alaska to Mexico using 80 percent less fuel than a comparable airplane besides Otto doesn't use the wings to store fuel the long and skinny wings are to provide maximum lift and minimum drag due to which it has reached an impressive glide ratio of 22 to 1 allowing Pilots to switch off the engine altogether and glide unpowered for up to 125 miles which the company says is roughly three times better than the typical aircraft the airplane's excellent aerodynamic design enables reaching high speed and altitude without using expensive jet engines to match its most efficient aerodynamic body the Solera 500L is equipped with a single turbocharged V12 diesel engine at the back designed by German manufacturer red position of the piston engine helps prevent the laminar flow from distorting and provides better acceleration because laminar flow makes the plane require less energy the engine bay could be filled with an electric motor which we'll get to shortly in the video the engine is expected to eventually be able to push the airplane up to 460 miles per hour at 50 000 feet which is an excellent result for an affordable aircraft since Solaris design benefits will not scale upwards to full-size airliners the initial version of the plane is designed to carry six passengers in a business cabin scalable to 19 passengers later on and with a running cost of 328 it will be five times more cost effective than bizjets with comparable performance and comfort in the end the goal of this Amazing Project is to create an aircraft that would allow for direct flight between any City pair at speeds and cost comparable to commercial airfares but with the added convenience of private Aviation it offers a spacious stand-up cabin with first class seats and a lavatory Solera needs a short takeoff length which means it will have direct access to over 5 000 Regional airports unlike commercial airlines that serve only about 500 airports in the U.S allowing passengers to avoid airport congestion flight delays or cancellations and arrive closer to their destinations and with more than 55 successful test flights Otto Aviation is planning to bring its extraordinary aircraft to the market by 2025. while scientists are working on improving the energy density of batteries Otto has announced a collaboration with hydrogen Aviation Pioneers zero Avia to develop a 600 kilowatts hydrogen fuel cell powertrain for the Revolutionary Solera aircraft hydrogen is used in fuel cells to generate electricity which is then used to Power electric motors to turn the aircraft's propellers with the only byproduct being water initially the hydrogen powertrain is set to provide about 1 150 miles of zero emission range which can still be considered a useful distance for example in a couple of years you can fly from Los Angeles to Seattle without making any emissions coupled with the inventions towards a big cut of green hydrogen production costs this can make emission-free short distance flights mainstream you believe the Solera 500L is the biggest thing to happen to both Aviation and travel Industries in the near future write in the comments below thanks for watching and please don't forget to subscribe for more interesting videos
