guru from XiaoHongShu, Mei.
She's here to share her foolproof makeup routine
that she's been rocking throughout her four years in university. If you happen to share a similar
face shape to hers, you definitely don't want to miss out on this tutorial.
This makeup look is bound to take your beauty game from zero to adorable,
making heads turn wherever you go!
According to Mei, this makeup look was her
go-to signature style during her college days. Her roommates would shower her with
compliments every time she wore it.
If you're someone who's new to makeup and
doesn't know where to begin, Mei suggests that this is the perfect everyday look you can rock
throughout your entire four years in college.
Mei has a massive following on her
XiaoHongShu account, with a whopping 240,000 devoted fans. Her signature style
leans towards the adorable ingenue look, which perfectly highlights her warm and
relatable girl-next-door charm.
Her beauty tutorials consistently receive an
average of 2,000 likes for every single post, proving just how much her content
resonates with her adoring audience.
Without further ado, let’s get
right into this tutorial!
To kick things off, if you're considering
daily-wear lenses for a natural look, Mei recommends going for lenses with a graphic
diameter ranging from 14.0 to 14.2 mm.
Since not everyone may need to
wear lenses, Mei won't delve into the specifics of that in this tutorial.
Before we dive into the makeup application, it's essential to prioritize skin hydration.
This ensures that your foundation sits seamlessly and lasts longer.
Hydrated skin can also significantly improve your overall skin condition.
Mei starts her skincare routine with a hydrating essence. After applying the essence,
allow it to absorb into your skin.
Following this, sunscreen should always be the
last step in your skincare regimen and the
first step in your makeup routine.
In our tutorial, we'll be using just a coin-sized amount of sunscreen. However,
please keep in mind that Mei resides in China, and the sun can be quite intense there.
So, it's generally advisable to use the more typical "two-fingers" method to apply the
appropriate amount of sunscreen.
Make sure to evenly distribute the sunscreen all
over your face and allow it to absorb for at least 2 to 3 minutes before moving on.
Once the sunscreen has fully absorbed, it will create a protective film on
your skin. You can check if it has formed by gently pressing on your skin.
If it feels less tacky and has a matte finish, it's likely that the film has
formed and you're good to go.
Now that the sunscreen has set, you can
proceed with applying concealer.
Peach-toned concealers are commonly
used to cover dark under-eye circles and areas with darker pigmentation.
The darker nude concealer is ideal for concealing acne, acne scars, or rashes.
The brightest concealer, on the other hand, is typically used after applying foundation. It's
perfect for highlighting sunken areas of the face, adding light to plump them up
and create a radiant look.
Now, let's begin with the peach-toned
concealer to correct any dark under-eye circles. Using an angled concealer brush can
make the application easier. Dip your brush into the palette and swipe it on your hand to
ensure the bristles are evenly coated.
Begin by applying the concealer below
your dark circles and gradually blend it upward. If you happen to notice any brush
strokes or uneven edges, simply dab them out using your fingertips for a smoother finish.
You can definitely tell the difference here!
Mei continues to conceal any pigmentation
in other areas. If you have red acne marks, you can use the darker nude shade.
Simply dab the concealer directly onto the spot and gently blend out the edges, leaving the
center part untouched for the best coverage.
Just look at how a clean and well-prepared
base can truly elevate your entire look!
let's move on to applying the base makeup.
Mei recommends visiting physical stores to try on different shades and find the one
that best matches your skin tone.
Additionally, she advises opting for slightly
pricier foundations, as she believes that the extra investment can make a significant
difference compared to cheaper options.
As usual, start by pumping the foundation
onto the back of your hand. Use your fingers to spread it out, allowing the foundation
to be picked up by your fingertips.
Then, begin by dabbing the foundation from
the inner regions of your face and work your way towards the outer areas.
This ensures even distribution of the foundation all over your face. Use a dampened
cushion puff or beauty blender to gently pat and blend the foundation, applying a slight
amount of pressure from your wrist.
This technique helps achieve a
seamless and natural finish.
If you happen to notice any blemishes
after applying your base, grab the lightest concealer and a flat brush.
Blend some of it on your hand to remove any excess product from the brush. Gently
tilt your head down and highlight the sunken grooves under your eyes.
Fill in a line following the groove and then pat it out using a cushion puff. This clever
trick can remarkably improve your complexion!
Once you're content with your base, it's time to
set it with powder. Using any powder you have, gently apply it, starting from the inner regions
of your face with a bit of pressure.
For narrower areas, you can fold your puff
to pick up some powder and dot it bit by bit to ensure those areas are well-set.
You'll notice that the base takes on a matte finish once it's all set and ready to go.
Moving on to brows, for those who are new to filling them in, Mei recommends
seeking tutorials that can guide you in finding your best brow shape.
Once you've shaped your brows in your preferred style, it will be much
simpler to fill them in later.
When it comes to achieving perfect brows,
there are various techniques for different face shapes. However, Mei often uses a
simple method for shaping her brows. She starts by aligning from the inner corner of
her eyes to locate the brow head. The brow head should not extend beyond this point.
Next, she aligns the nose alar to the outer rim of her iris to determine the arch of her
brows. For the brow tail, she aligns it from the nose alar to the outer corner of her
eyes. These three points serve as a guide to help you shape your brows beautifully.
Typically, we begin filling in our brows in the middle and then gradually extend
the application towards the tail.
Trace strokes that follow the natural
direction of your brow hair growth for a more authentic look. Once you've filled them
in, use a spooly to brush through your brows and achieve that natural finish.
Now, let's move on to the eyes. For makeup beginners, it's a great idea to start with
eyeshadow palettes in brown or earth tones. These shades are versatile and perfect for creating
a variety of everyday wearable looks.
To begin, we'll even out the skin tone on our
eyelids with the lightest nude shade. You can use any shade that's lighter with lower saturation.
Apply this shade evenly, starting from the outer corner and blending it towards the front,
covering both the upper and lower lids.
Next, grab a greyish-brown shade and blend it at
the outer corner to add depth to your eyes.
When applying, make sure your first stroke
lands at the outer corner of your eyes and then slowly blend it towards the front.
The area you want to blend should extend slightly above the crease for a more defined look.
Similarly, for the lower lid, blend the greyish-brown shade from the outer
corner towards the middle to create a balanced and harmonious eye look.
You can also blend the same shade at the front part of your eyes by following the
natural groove of your eye socket.
This technique can make your eyes appear
deeper as it helps contour and define the structure of your eyes.
Now, switch to a smaller detailing brush and pick up the darkest brown shade.
Carefully apply this shade to the lash line and blend it slightly within the crease.
Repeat the same step for the lower lash line, and always ensure that your brush stays close
to the lashes while applying. This technique enhances the structure of your lower lid and
helps widen the appearance of your eyes.
Returning to the lightest nude shade, we'll use
it to highlight the middle region of our eyelid, the brow bone, and the lower lid.
Additionally, if you happen to apply too much eyeshadow, you can always correct it
with the nude shade. Simply dab it on top of the intense color to reduce its intensity
and achieve a more balanced look.
Using a flat brush and the same greyish
brown shade, smile to locate the contour of your under-eye fat or the "aygeosahl."
Then, follow the groove and lightly trace the shadow underneath it. If you're a fan of
East Asian beauty looks, Mei suggests that emphasizing the "aygeosahl" is a must.
This clever trick can widen your eyes, giving them a beautiful, doe-like appearance!
Now, it's time to curl your lashes. To do this, position the curler right at the roots
of your lashes, gently lift the curler, and press the clip down.
You can repeat this process until your lashes are curled to your satisfaction.
Mei also points out that curling your lower lashes can be a bit tricky for beginners,
so we'll skip that step for now.
Let's apply the mascara primer to lengthen
your lashes and ensure that the curls stay in place all day long. Be sure not
to forget your lower lashes!
Following that, apply mascara to achieve a
voluminous look. Brush it from the roots and gently move it upwards in a Z-shaped motion.
If you're looking for a better effect, false lashes are your best option. For makeup
beginners, you can start with individual falsies in the "fairy lash" type. Don't be
intimidated; these lashes can truly elevate your look to a whole new level.
When selecting false lashes, opt for the 10 to 11 mm series to achieve
a subtle and natural look.
Mei personally prefers the 10mm lashes as they
appear the most natural on her. To apply them, take your lash glue and spread
a bit onto the lid cover.
Then, gently grasp the lashes by the upper
region, dip the end into the lash glue, and place it beneath your actual
lashes for a seamless look.
Gently secure the lashes by carefully pushing
the base to stabilize them in place.
If you're interested in a more detailed tutorial
on how to apply false lashes, be sure to check out our previous video for step-by-step guidance.
Continue to apply the falsies along your lash line, using 4 to 5 clusters
for the best result.
To fill in the eyeliner, use a liquid liner,
extend a straight line from your outer corner to elongate your eyes for a more dramatic look.
For those who need to use eyelid stickers, Mei suggests applying them after your
eyeshadow but before your mascara routine.
To contour your nose, switch to a contour brush
and pick up the contour powder. If your contour palette is slightly darker, like Mei's, you can
brush the excess powder on a tissue to remove it before applying it to your nose for a
more controlled and subtle effect.
Begin your first stroke at the root of your
nose, where your eye socket is, and then bring the brush upwards toward your brows.
Avoid brushing the contour from your brows towards the nose bridge in a straight line. Instead,
aim to create a C-shaped shadow to achieve a more natural and flattering nose contour.
To fill in the nose tip, create a straight line at the sides of your nose tip and a slanted
shadow beneath it for a more refined effect.
It appears that Mei's contour might
be a bit heavy-handed in this case. If you prefer a more subtle look, you can
certainly tone it down in your routine.
To refine the nose contour, Mei gently brushes
the shadows from her nose root to her nose tip, connecting everything together for a
more cohesive and polished look.
To highlight the nose, switch to a smaller
brush and use the shimmery highlighter. Apply it at the nose tip, bridge, inner
corner, and the "aygeosahl" for a radiant and illuminated effect.
When it comes to choosing a blush, go for a shade that complements your skin tone.
Before applying it to your face, be sure to tap off any excess product on the lid.
Apply the blush to the region close to the outer corner of your eye and your cheekbones,
brushing it inwards. You can also brush a bit on your nose tip to create the effect of
shortening the middle third of your face, giving it a lovely and balanced look.
Lastly, for the lips, Mei suggests choosing a shade that matches your skin tone. She's
using a berry pink shade to complement the look. Dab the lip product in the center of
your lips and blend it out towards the edges for a natural and harmonious finish.
And there you have it, the complete look! In reality, this makeup might be a bit too elaborate
for an everyday look, especially for going to classes. Even if you're skilled at makeup, it can
be time-consuming, let alone for beginners.
However, you can always pick and choose which
parts of the look are most important to you and simplify the rest to save time and achieve
a more practical everyday makeup routine.
Mei has kindly shared every step here to help her
fans learn the easiest techniques for each makeup step. However, it's up to us to adapt the look
to suit our personal preferences and needs.
