today's video is on five asteroids that one day may destroy the earth number five 1999 a in ten this sub kilometer asteroid was discovered by Lincoln near Earth asteroid research team on 13th of January 1999 NASA turns its attention to 1999 and 10 since the path that this asteroid is reflecting indicates that it will pass very close to the earth on April 19th 2017 asteroid J zero to five past only 1.8 million kilometers from the earth which is the shortest distance an asteroid has passed near the Earth's orbit in the last 400 years 1999 alien ten on the other hand will come much closer as it's expected that this asteroid will pass within three hundred ninety thousand kilometers or 240,000 miles of the earth this asteroid discovered measures approximately 800 meters in diameter and is characterized as potentially dangerous as it's expected to collide with the earth in the year 2027 or more specifically on August 7th of that year number 4 asteroid 2011 a g5 asteroid 2011 a g5 has a diameter of approximately 140 meters and was discovered on the 8th of January 2011 by Mount Lemmon survey this asteroid is mainly being studied by NASA scientists and astrophysicists as it's expected to collide with the earth in the year 2040 or more specifically on February 5th of that year it's estimated that an impact would produce the equivalent of 100 megatons of TNT the impact zone of this asteroid is not known however scientists suggest that the asteroid could hit an ocean which in turn could cause a mega tsunami or an explosion according to calculations there is probably an impact between 1 and 625 and believe it or not that's a relatively high figure however NASA estimates that there is enough time to send a mission to deflect the asteroid from orbit number three 101 955 been new 101 955 been new previously known as 1999 rq36 is considered one of the most dangerous asteroids in the universe this rocky body measures approximately 560 meters in diameter and was discovered in 1999 it's estimated that this asteroid will impact the earth in the year 2182 according to a study by research team co-led by maria sena storyƶ this asteroid has a 1 in 1,000 chance of actually hitting the earth it all depends on whether it undergoes a change in its trajectory known as the Yarkovsky effect the effect consists in the fact that the modification and the trajectory of an asteroid can occur causing a rotation of itself a change in its trajectory and therefore avoid a collision with earth however if the asteroid does not change its trajectory it's expected to impact by 2182 although the exact date of the collision is not known a group of its specialized astrophysicist from NASA is working to prevent this asteroid the size of the Empire State Building from hitting the earth the main threat of this asteroid poses to the earth is its imminent collision with our planet by the year 2182 however NASA is developing a program that consists of launching a missile to divert the orbit of this asteroid away from the planet it may sound a bit fictional but this is actually nasa's plan to avoid the collision of the been new asteroid with earth number 2 1950 ad according to scientists the asteroid called 1950 da may hit Earth on March 16th 2880 and in turn and all life as we know it the most unusual thing about this asteroid is its rotation it rotates every two hours in 6 minutes which is a super high speed because asteroids for the most part are clumps of rock held together by gravity but for something to turn that fast around the rocks should just fly off in fact if you are an astronaut and you were trying to land on a 1950 da you would just immediately fly off into space so scientists have been baffled as to why this asteroid stays together despite the fact that it's turning so fast that the rocks should just fly apart the discovery was made by researchers at the University of Tennessee Knoxville the possible reason they say something is called the van der Waals cohesion which is where molecules are held together by oppositely attracting fluids or gas although this is considered a breakthrough scientists still do not know how to stop it asteroid 1950 da is Rock 2/3 of a mile in diameter traveling at about 15 kilometers per second relative to the earth following its current trajectory it has a 0.3 percent probability of colliding with the planet if this occurs it would slam into the Atlantic Ocean at 60 1155 km/h according to experts the odds that this asteroid hitting Earth are few but if it does the force of the impact will be equivalent to forty-four thousand eight hundred megatons of TNT it will be an extinction-level event although scientists do not currently know how to stop this asteroid they are constantly looking for ways to do so number one nine nine nine four to Apophis the fear arose in 2004 when employees of the Kitt Peak National Observatory discovered an asteroid that they thought had a possibility to collide with the earth in the future the asteroid got the name Apophis which is a Greek name for the enemy of the Sun God Rob according to Egyptian mythology the asteroid was estimated to be 450 meters in diameter at first but then a year later they improved their observation and saw that the correct size was about 350 meters in diameter in 2014 the diameter was established to be 370 meters more specifically since the asteroid orbits in a proximity to our planet after its passing close to Earth in 2004 it's expected to pass again in 2029 this caused concern since the probability of an impact was estimated to be 2.7 percent in 2004 in 2006 the scientists discovered that if the impact won't happen in 2029 Apophis will pass through its gravitational keyhole and would set up a future impact that is expected to happen seven years later in 2036 astronomers made calculations that the asteroid will pass very close to the earth and that due to the proximity of the orbit of the asteroid will be altered this could potentially mean that the asteroid could impact earth sometime in the future regardless of the exact year of impact we can't help but wonder what will happen if this asteroid actually hit the earth Apophis weighs around 27 billion kilograms and if it hits the earth it will leave a crater that will be about 518 meters deep the strength of the impact is the thing that worries us the most it will be equivalent to a detonation of 880 million tons of TNT at the same time which would be around 65 thousand times more powerful than a nuclear bomb detonated in Hiroshima as such 999 42 Apophis earns a top spot on our list of 5 asteroids that may destroy earth now let's take a look at some honorable mentions 2011 a g5 according to researchers an asteroid called 2011 a g5 could collide with earth in 2040 in fact this asteroid poses such a threat that experts are discussing a mission to deflect the object according to NASA this asteroid currently has a 1 into 625 chance of hitting the planet on February 5th 2040 however experts can observe the asteroid long enough to make a final decision on the likelihood of a collision details such as composition and mass are also unclear according to NASA there would be time to mount the deflection mission before a 2023 keyhole a keyhole is a small region of space near the earth where a passing object's path could be altered by a planet's gravity 2011 a g5 could be put on a collision course with the planet if it passes through a keyhole on a closed approach to earth in 2023 a deflection mission would be planned if it appears the asteroid will pass through the keyhole 4179 to tatis 4179 to tatis originally called 1989 ac is a pretty dangerous elongated stony asteroid it's 2.5 kilometres wide is loosely composed essentially a conglomeration of rubble and due to frequent planetary approaches it has a very chaotic orbit and it could someday hit the earth if it did it could destroy human civilization in 1992 1996 2000 2004 2008 12 and 16 this object made very close passes of Earth and will do so again in the coming decades there is a chance it could eventually hit us and it's impact would be utterly catastrophic while it's not likely to ever impact earth it's expected to be ejected at some point in the inner solar system before it likely has a chance of impacting it does illustrate one of the terrifying reality the solar system that at anytime earth could be hit by an asteroid or comet [Music] remember to subscribe to our channel with notifications on so you don't
