[Music] in this town babies are fed by she-wolf no no i just made it up this statue is about the story that rome was founded by two brothers romulus and remus that were raised by she-wolf but this is in rome this is siena and you can see this statue all over the town the reason is that here they have a sequel to the original story and the sequel goes that remus had two sons and as in every good family they had some family fights in one of these family fights romulus killed his brother remus and his two sons had to flee the rome and they took the statue of she-wolf with them when the two brothers came here they found that siena and the statue of she-wolf became the symbol of the city and here are top 10 things waiting for you in siena this is the best starting place from the top of the wall you can see the best skyline of siena this looks like a park but actually this is a park on top of the fort this is a huge 16th century fort that was built by the medici family the moment they conquered siena one of their biggest rivals this fort was used as a station for florentine soldiers so they could prevent any uprising in the city of siena in 19th century they transformed this fort into a park and is been used by the local people for recreation peace quiet outdoor activities and great 360 views of siena and its surrounding hills [Music] it's a good idea to check one of siena's many city gates this way you'll get a better understanding that siena was an actual medieval town surrounded by thick walls and these city gates were the only way in and out of the city most of the city gates were built in 14th and 15th century and the amazing part is that they are still standing and all of them are used in everyday traffic [Music] in siena there are many different squares and whiny little streets and each and every one of them has their own unique story this square is surrounded by three huge palaces and the story of this square is this is a headquarter of the oldest still operating bank in the world the bank was founded here in 1472 and the amazing part is the bank is still there that's like 550 years or something this 13th century church is an important center of christian spirituality i know it doesn't look like much on the outside and also on the inside it's very simple big vast empty space with no frescoes just some artwork hanging from the wall but this place is famous for its relics unfortunately you're not allowed to take photos or videos of those relics in particular it's famous for the relic of the holy head of saint catherine that's on display saint catherine devoted her life to god she was born here in siena and she spent most of her life behind these walls she was famous for having mystical phenomena such as stigmata and the holy marriage she died in 1380 at age of 33 and she became patron said of rome and hall of italy there is the entrance to the baptist street you can easily miss it as it sits under the cathedral but this place is well worth the visit it was built in 1300 and once you get inside you will be stunned by colorful frescoes and in the middle you'll find baptismal font made out of marble and bronze the bronze panels are showing the life of saint john the baptist and two of them were made by famous donatello [Music] inside the cathedral there is an amazing library dedicated to pope p the second to preserve his rich collection of manuscripts he has collected over the years it was built by his nephew pope p iii but the library is not famous for the manuscripts it is famous for its frescoes apparently they were painted by young rafaello and they're showing 10 scenes from the life of pope p iii [Music] the library is the separate room inside the cathedral so make sure you have a ticket that will get you in this is one of the most famous landmarks in siena it was built in 14th century next to the town hall it was designed to be the same height as the bell church tower if you looked at sienna from the distance the idea was that the church and the state are equal power but if i look at the skyline of siena today i have a feeling that the church tower is a little bit taller but this tower is built at the lowest point of the main square so it is much taller in fact when it was finished this was one of the tallest structures in the world [Music] you can get to the top and get great 360 views of siena but you better be in good shape because there are 400 steps waiting for you the name of the tower means the tower of the eater and it was named after the first citizen that got a job on the top of the tower his job was to strike the bell every hour and since he was famous for overeating hence the name of the tower [Music] this 13th century palace sits on the bottom of this weird shell-shaped main square it's made out of stone and brick and on its facade you can see a lot of little holes they were used by the medieval builders to put in wooden poles to hold the scaffolding it's impressive on the outside but on the inside almost every room is decorated by frescos [Music] and it's most famous for the fresco cycle of good and bad government you see this palace was and still is today used as a town hall so these frescoes were designed to remind the rulers what was at stake when they made their [Music] decisions [Music] this is one of the greatest medieval squares in the world if you see it for the first time it really makes an impression as you can see with its weird shell shape this is a true landmark of this town [Music] this is the heart of siena this is the heart of social and political life it's a marketplace and it's a racetrack for the weirdest horse race in the world each year on july the 2nd and august the 16th the famous palio horse race takes place here this place is packed with people and the jockeys are dressed in the colors of different neighborhoods they go around the square for just three laps and the winner brings an amazing joy to the winning neighborhood if you sit in one of the bars and restaurants around the square you will see this crazy race on their tv sets [Music] sienna was competing with florence for dominance over tuscany and they wanted to have a bigger cathedral than their rivals in fact they wanted to have the biggest church on the planet as you can see they had some problems [Music] there
