exploring ljubljana and this is the best way [Music] i just had coffee with amazing view on top of that building it's called simply the skyscraper when it was built in 1933 this was the tallest building on the balkans and among the tallest residential buildings in europe it was built in art deco style with beautiful statues and spiral staircases but its built was very controversial you see until then no other building in the city was taller than the bell towers of the cathedral and this was the first building to surpass it today this is still mainly a residential building but its top floors are reserved for a restaurant a cafe bar where i just was and a vip lounge that means that top floors are accessible to the public [Music] this is the main market in ljubljana you can see how important it is by its premium location between the castle hill and the river the outdoor market spreads over two squares here you'll find fresh fruits vegetables and flowers grown by local farmers between the two squares is this huge palace where in the ground floor you'll find the indoor market with meat and dairy products there is a second indoor market that can be found in this beautiful two-story market hall this market hall follows the flow of the river and it was designed by the famous architect pletchnik here you'll find many bars typical slovenian products and downstairs is a fish market [Music] this is the biggest and the most beautiful park in the city as you can see it stretches right into the city center it was designed in 1813 when ljubljana was part of napoleon's french empire this park is crossed with three-line walks it has beautiful flower beds fountains interesting statues promenades outdoor exhibitions and bars where you can sit down and relax here are also two museums one is housed in tivoli castle and it's dedicated to printed and contemporary art while in zakiyn mansion located next to the sports hall you will find museum of contemporary history of slovenia [Music] architect pletchnik left a big mark in ljubljana but this this is one of his most original creations this church sits on the outskirts of ljubljana in the marshland due to its remote location this is not a popular tourist destination so the visit of the inside of the church is possible only if you make a prior appointment or if you attend one of the masses it's quite easily accessible though since one of the bus lines stops right in front of the church build of this church involved big portion of architects family his nephew was actually the local priest that commissioned the build the money left behind by architects deceased brother was used to finance the build since the church is on a marshy ground it is built on piles and it is designed to be as light as possible as can be seen from this very thin bell tower with many openings this is actually a two-story building the ground floor is residential area for the priest while this monumental staircase leads you to the first floor where is the actual church for cost saving measures they used very affordable materials the church's four main supporting pillars are actually concrete sewer pipes the inside was also designed by the architect and it's mostly made from wood that was donated by local villagers the end result is this beautiful original and timeless architecture this is where the history happened in ljubljana this square was built for ceremonial purposes in 1821 when ljubljana hosted an important congress hence the name of the square congress square at that time great european powers met here to discuss their international problems after defeating napoleon after the congress part of the square was turned into a park and that park got its name star park due to its layout square got today's shape in 1930s when it was renovated by famous architect klechnik it's surrounded by beautiful buildings where you'll find plenty of restaurants and cafes where you can relax sit down and soak up the atmosphere from the top of the square you will get amazing view over ljubljana castle and its castle hill and in the park you will find few quirky features one of them is an anchor that anchor is actually a statue that was erected in 1954 when slovenia regained its coastal region after being taken away by italy at the end of first world war you will also find a roman statue you see ljubljana's history is dating back to roman times when romans founded city of emona here and the region of the congress square was a burial ground where the statue was [Music] excavated [Music] after devastating earthquake in 1895 the old bridge had to be replaced with this one for economic reasons it was built with brand new building material reinforced concrete at the time ljubljana was part of austrian empire and this was one of the earliest and the longest reinforced concrete bridges in europe in 1901 when this bridge was opened it was dedicated to austrian emperor franz joseph and his 40 years of rule that's why on the side of the bridge you can read the dates 1848 and 1888. this is a beautiful example of art nouveau architecture but the bridge is famous for its big four copper dragons thanks to these dragons the bridge was renamed into a dragon bridge after the first world war when leblanc was no longer part of the austrian empire there is also a legend connected to the bridge and the four dragons maybe a little bit unappropriate for this day and age so i apologize the legend goes that if a virgin crosses the bridge the dragons will wag their tails i have been here for a while and the dragons didn't move at all this is the main roman catholic church in ljubljana and it dates back to 1707. it was built in baroque style and with its twin bell towers and green dome is one of ljubljana's landmarks on the outside it's not that spectacular except for its two sculptured bronze doors that were made in 1990s the main door represent history of christianity in slovenia and they were made to celebrate 1250th anniversary of christianity in the country the sidors have portraits of bishops inside this church is very impressive it still has its original barak decor impressive church organs beautiful frescoes pink marble and many golden details [Music] the square by the river is famous for its statue and three bridges this has always been an important junction in the heart of the city this is one of the most popular public places and also one of the most romantic squares in ljubljana it is named after 19th century poet france prescheren whose works draulitza became slovenian national anthem the poet is gazing on the other side of the square where on the facade of a house you can see his unrequited love julia the square is surrounded by beautiful art nouveau palaces that were built after devastating earthquake in 1895. the oldest building on the square is 17th century franciscan church famous for its red facade there used to be just one bridge over the river but in 1930s architect fletchnik got a job to widen the existing bridge he decided to add two more bridges for pedestrians and leave the original bridge as it was that's how the famous triple bridge was created this is the most popular place where people of ljubljana meet celebrate and participate in many cultural events [Music] area between castle hill and the river is known as the old town as the name suggests this is the oldest part of ljubljana here you'll find many beautiful shops great restaurants and many many bars and coffee places this part has beautiful squares with water fountains that are connected by charming cobblestone streets most of the buildings date to 15th century when city was rebuilt after a major earthquake but today's barack appearance dates to 17th and 18th century when the city went through major reconstruction [Music] but most relaxed and popular part of old town is along the banks of biblionita river this place is packed with bars and this is a popular hot spot for daily coffee or an evening drink [Applause] [Music] this is the biggest landmark of ljubljana it sits proudly on the top of the hill overlooking the entire city this castle or more precisely this tower is depicted on the city's coat of arms with a dragon on the top originally this was a stone fort built in the 11th century today's shape is from 15th century when it was completely rebuilt by austrians in order to defend austrian empire and its capital city vienna from ottoman invasions later on this was used as barracks as arsenal building as military hospital and in the last stage as a prison entrance to the castle's courtyard is free of charge but otherwise castle also offers different tours museums galleries exhibitions so it's really worth exploring you can also climb to the top of the outlook tower and get the best 360 views of the entire city here are also bars restaurants and wine shop otherwise castle is a popular venue for all sorts of events throughout the year dudana is small and compact city that can be easily covered on foot since slovenia is small country and yubiana is in its center it can also be used as a starting point for exploring the country there are at least two must do day trips if you're here first one is to the north to this beautiful alpine lake called lake bled a second must-see day trip is to this
