hi students welcome to the lesson today we're going to remove some americanisms from your english these are either pronunciations specific words and in one case an expression which doesn't belong in your british english because it doesn't fit and it just sounds ugly so let's go through them one by one removing them from your british english we'll start with this word so if you manage to pronounce this difficult word correctly say it for me aloud this word is squirrel squirrel squirrel there's no u sound in it never say squirrel squirrel doesn't belong in british english the next word is adult adult i bought a ticket for one adult in british english the stress is on the first syllable and this vowel is a vowel called uh adult americans like to say the word a different way they say adult adult so in american english you buy a ticket for one adult okay but we don't like that word stress we do it this way around moving on from pronunciation into word choices the subject that you study at school is not called mass we like to say it with an s say it with me if you can maths is difficult because we have three consonants together math math not three consonants we have two consonants that are difficult to say after each other this subject is how we informally say it maths although if you go to a posh school maybe you say mathematics there the next word we're going to look at is garbage this is american english we use the word rubbish rubbish bags the rubbish bags are under the sink the rubbish is in the rubbish bin the rubbish collection day is on tuesday if you talk about garbage when we're going to put the garbage out you're using an americanism so please remove that quickly from your british english and then the next word that we want to look at is so vulgar i can hardly write it on the board let alone say it the word booty which is a sexual term for a behind or a bottom this word entered the language in nine in the 1920s in america and this was african-american slang in british english this word traditionally has a different meaning and the words aren't related booty is stolen goods so for example you could say the pirate's booty it means not this it means the things that he stole and finally we're going to talk about what is an example of netflix english i got this or we got this this is a commonly used expression now we see it in advertising people are using it a lot to mean i can handle this don't worry about it i'll do it but this phrase is ugly in british english because the grammar is incorrect for us we couldn't say i got this we'd have to use i have got this we'd have to change the tense to the present perfect and if we do that the feeling is lost it just doesn't sound right so in british english just don't use that ugly phrase at all it doesn't sound good you can say don't worry i'll handle it so if we recap everything here we want to remove these expressions pronunciation words from your english because they're americanisms and you are learning british english and we want everything to be cohesive and go together nicely thank you for watching this video and join me again another time i'll see you then bye
