a very good morning from the border between the Isle of Harris and the Isle of Lewis spoiler alert it's the same island now today was meant to be my St Kilda trip but that dream was killed off late last night with a phone call that we couldn't go because of the weather so that's the last time I'm going to mention that group of islands today and we are going to focus on what we can do and that's Drive North into Lewis let's go and there we go we've crossed the border [Music] so fast forward about 45 minutes and we have arrived in the capital of Lewis stornway I guess you could say it's the capital of the outer herdes because it is the biggest town here and somewhere that dominates The View as you're coming into town is the war memorial so that's my first stop just up at the top of this hill the weather and the drive up was certainly a bit dramatic but the sun's coming out now but one thing in the outer hrid EES always be ready for the weather to change again very quickly because 1 minute it can be like this and then it can be chucking it down 5 minutes later says the guy who's not wearing a jacket but I checked the weather forecast last night it said it was going to be dry all day but this morning it's a wee bit different I got a we bit of rain coming in around about 2:00 this afternoon so we'll get as much as we can done but I kind of like this weather to be honest wow I knew there was a war memorial here I just didn't realize it was like this it's like a castle when you see the names it's certainly very Highland isn't it the McDonald's the mcclouds the Morrison and I guess so many of them would have been from the same families eh but what a memorial back in the 1970s I would have been able to go through this red door and walk up the Rock iron staircase to the top but these days it's not deemed safe and if you follow the sun down the road that'll take us right into the center of stor away and that's where we'll head next but I don't expect he'll be spending too long in the capital we'll have a quick look and then we'll keep heading north there's a lighthouse at the very Northern tip of Lewis and I'd like to get there while there's still some sun in the sky look at that's a traffic jam we must be in the capital there's a top tip in the Scottish islands always take any opportunity to get fuel starway is the one place in the outer Hebrides I've actually been before I flew here and I had a couple hours just have a wander around town There's a video on the channel about it it's not the most beautiful place in the world but it's a great base from which to explore this island and you might actually be very thankful for all the shops you've got here if you need to stock up on supplies is that you wantan to shake my hand I'm not sure but I actually love this little statue because look he's got his Catch of the [Applause] Day this empty shop here's got a we exhibition in the window and I love all the homemade models of the ships I mean look at that one fantastic and if we look over here over 5 million Canadians claim Scot descent over a million Scots have immigrated to [Music] Canada I tell you that's nice use of an empty shop isn't it oh I love that [Music] one here in the other side of the we've got the more industrial Harbor and we've also got where the calmac docks now that ship comes over from the mainland from alool I think I'm pretty sure that's the route alool to sternway and behind me here we've got what must be stor away bus station you know what I was just thinking if you've lived in the island for all your life you'll never have seen a train I think stor away could be a decent place to live just as long as you're okay with being this remote because like I said that Ferry it goes to olol and on the mainland ol pool's considered to be remote so just think about that and there's my wi car and off we go again [Music] [Music] well it's around here somewhere but with no signal on my phone at the moment this could take a while oh no it had to happen happened didn't it um what did I do so there we go I found what I was looking for and I can now say I've driven over the bridge to nowhere all right so it's called the Gary Bridge and it was commissioned by a lord who owned the aisle of Lewis between 1918 and 1923 now he had the idea to build a road from Tula which is pretty much where where we are up to Ness at the very top of the island but it never happened partly because of the first world war and all we're left with is this bridge to nowhere and no I'm not going any closer to the edge I must say I came out here just to find the road to nowhere but the views along the way back over to the mainland are absolutely incredible and I don't even need a map to know where it is because if I look straight ahead I can see the unmistakable hump of suven my favorite [Music] Mountain can anyone tell me what these are by the way I've seen quite a few of them dotted around the side of the road but I have got no idea so as usual I'll just have to rely on the comment section to educate me [Music] [Music] so here we are right at the end of the road and Ness a we Harbor that's literally being carved out of the rock now I'll be honest I thought this is where the lighthouse would be but no we just need to go back this way and turn right so we're almost at the tip of Lewis and that means we're almost at the very tip of the outer herdes right let's head to the lighthouse I'm always in the wrong place right I think this is the way it takes us to the butt of Lewis see I thought it was the butt of NES it doesn't mention the lighthouse though there's only one way to find out I can see see a lighthouse a way off in the distance I don't know how close we can drive to it but either way we are going look at that model that's so cool love it [Music] [Music] oh I'll need a bit of luck to get parked here so take two we have now reached the very tip of Lewis and the most Northerly point of the outer herdes and off in the distance there I can also see the Northwestern point of Scotland at Cape wrath that's another place I'd love to get to this year and don't worry I'm not going any closer to that edge and there in front of us now is the Magnificent brick but of Lewis Lighthouse I think that's what it's called [Applause] of course I'm obsessed with a lighthouse but here I find myself looking more the other direction these Cliffs are incredible and the path around them is not great for someone with my head for Heights the grass here is perfect it feels like I'm walking on like the old course at St Andrews or something oh I bet there's some amazing little Coastal Trails either direction away from the lighthouse that will take you to some hidden beaches and Coes and it's just a reminder that unlike me coming here for a couple of days days you need at least a week just to explore this one island of the outer hdes isn't that right guys it actually reminds me a lot of where we camped on Shetland wow I remember that that was the coldest night of my life unfortunately before the YouTube channel started considering where we are that Lighthouse is in incredible [Applause] condition all right where are we going now I think it's right and there's another one of those look though soft be my bed I'd prefer to sleep on the Heather in a small quiet Hollow where rushes surround no not there it's a bit bigger than that look at the construction of it it's just beautiful that's a proper art form isn't it no TI tell me that doesn't look cozy and my lunch is almost ready I know some of you say I don't put enough food in my videos well here you go sausage anyone or maybe a [Music] oake imagine a time of no tarmac roads cars plane or fery travel no electricity telephones running water toilets or fridge freezers a time before computers the Internet and mobile phones no thank you that's my job hey look at this Arch I think it's a whalebone it's massive indeed it is in September 1920 a corpse of an 80t long blue wheale drifted into to bragger Bay the beach 12 attracted a great deal of attention due to its size but the issue of what to do with it soon took center stage and here's what they did with it looks like someone's house am I allowed just to go in here what's the worst that could happen I can't even describe how big that is but when you see it next to a house a two-story house the things you see on this island there [Applause] I've stopped off at a bro now a bro is basically an old Scottish Stone Tower I'm not quite sure of the purpose but anyway this one looks absolutely stunning and that's why I've stopped here it's called car way bro and the view from up here that's just what Lewis is all about isn't it and there's our brook let's go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] and this Brock seems to be home to some sheep in their lambs don't worry guys wow I wasn't even going to stop here I'm so glad I [Music] did see the we staircase going up there ah an information board trust me this is ex exactly what I need here sorry it's a bit windy up here but let me just try and read this for you because I knew nothing about Brocks before so Brocks are among Scotland's most impressive prehistoric buildings these stone round houses date from around 2,300 to 1,900 years ago and are found mainly in the north and west of Scotland probably built to reflect the prestige and status of their inhabitants Brocks were primarily Dwelling Places for the principal family in the area they would have provided some protection against sporadic raiding but we're not purely defensive structures there we go oh can we go inside I did not know this not so easy oh here we go [Applause] there was a sign saying do not climb but I think that was the other side I think we're okay here watching the we Lambs jumping that's the most entertaining part right let's get going tell you what though considering how old these are this would have been some place to live wouldn't it but maybe just not for my [Applause] back but that view eh I love how all the Sheep are just having we conversations you too [Applause] Lambos so there we go a house for the poest family in town they set picked the perfect location they had a long walk to the toilets though didn't they it's like something out the Teletubbies now across the road there's a we bro gift shop but it's closed I've noticed that with quite a few places actually I was looking for somewhere to stop for lunch but a lot of places are not open and it's the last day of April hm [Music] [Music] but we have an honesty shop and it sells fudge yes please okay so in the fridge we've got the fudge oh wow and in the baking box what we got in here oh coconut and jam that is my absolute favorite although lemon drizzle as well what am I going to do it's at times like this you've just got to dig deep and buy both so I'll get some coconut and jam and I'll get some fudge I'm a bit boring when it comes to fudge I think I'll just stick to good old vanilla so that is 250 for the fudge 3 quid for the coconut and jam and I'd call that a bargain it was a pleasure doing business with you this could well be our final stop of the day it's been a fun day but it's gone too fast and we're here at the callanish stones some very old Scottish Stones arranged in a [Applause] circle never mind the cish stones I got all excited when I saw a we food van and then I realized they were just closing oh [Applause] well I don't know why but this weather just seems appropriate for visiting this place you can keep your [Applause] [Applause] sunshine and there's exactly what I needed to know when were these Stones brought here and put up over 4,000 years ago if nothing else they're good for shelter from the winds but why are they actually here your guess is as good as mine [Music] I love how you can touch them I love the moss growing on them I love the colors just incredible isn't it and know that I'm in that Central ring I just need to pray to the YouTube gods that someone will watch this video and I know what you're thinking oh Steve thanks so much the effort you put in these Stones must be in the middle of nowhere well actually know some very lucky people live just across the [Music] road with views like this I would say I found the perfect spot to end today's video and say thank you so much for coming along with me to the Isle of Lewis this is what it's all about isn't it if I do find anywhere to eat on the way back to Harris you'll be the first to know but in the meantime thanks for watching and I'll see you soon bye-bye well I ended up coming back into stornway and I still couldn't find much open but the chippy was open so that's my dinner folks I'll let you know how it is oh I know I'm hungry but that looks really good oh I wasn't wrong it's absolutely delicious so I'll finish this off before the 45 minute drive back down to my hotel in Harris and I'll see you soon bye-bye [Music] a [Music]
