[Music] vibrating there's a lotta I hate about it but it's just it's the necessary evil to be able to ride a bike every day I love like just this simple idea of riding my feelings for van in my you know need for that is a great enough that I deal with all the [ __ ] and that they are justified [Music] every day go out and live you know you can you can push yourself to breaking point and you do push it and that's you know that's the purpose of this boredom is to suffer for longer than anyone else [Music] my name is Scott Mitchell and I'm a journalist in December of 2013 are made of mine Angus Morton gave me a call and asked if I could come on a trip and another guy when he can in going just let me check my schedule all right I think I can do it where are we going I can hardly do one monthly not really I I've known Angus for years what I didn't know was that a younger brother Lachlan was one of the best young psychics in the world at the age of 21 the youngster from Australia is a routine garmin-sharp you've gone 43 now he's going through the weed industry ah he is so sucks what a finish Lachlan bored even though he's been racing around the world to judge 16 he just finished his first season on the world tour racing against winners of the Tour de France and world champion he wore the yellow leader's jersey in Colorado and in Utah winning best young rider at both races but I also hadn't realized that my friend Angus had turned his back on a professional career that was just as promising when he was 20 to pursue a career in television and living nothing like a pro athlete the challenge the two brothers set themselves was to ride 2,000 kilometers from the home town of Port Macquarie across one of the harshest landscapes in the world the Australian outback to the centre of the continent cooler room not only would the trippy about riding it would be about the people we met and the communities we stayed in Lachlan hadn't told his team that he would embark on one of the most adventurous pre-season training regimes imaginable and Angus after nearly four years without riding his bike was going to try and keep up to every K I can't drive and don't know anything about cycling so for that the boys brought along all-round expert Chris Barker this is the story of how one first year pro reacted to the world of cycling and how one of the leads towards many burnt-out prospects tried to re-engage with a sport that almost destroyed it so how often a year do you get to see your brother 12 hours we work together this year but a partner didn't see we're doing the trip because we wanted to hang out together it's difficult when he's got a ride all the time here's this kid who's you know one of the best up-and-coming bike riders in the world let's see if I can hang onto his wheel for three weeks and share what that's like for a mere mortal he's not trained by zero but it's heads do it at the level we like you know I won't do exactly what I used to be able to do I want to keep up you still my younger brother I want to kick your ass I'm the bike he's a very stubborn and competitive guy I'm nervous about there being a day in there hidden away that the last three and half years of boozing and smoking and partying and working too hard we'll catch up with him we got to a stage when like when we were both competitive bike riders we couldn't turn together when was the last time you rode together well when we go along really well but on the bike it was just two totally different things I would just never ride together so uh yeah it's probably over five years ago next up or roof when we've laughed raced and rode together we were pretty evenly matched it had I've kind of carried that mindset I'm the older brother I'm supposed to be better and supposed to be kind of human looking after the incident but in reality like there's miles apart does this remove mine so well I think he is being kind to me by kind of not letting that show the kind of body was listening you probably prefer to just be riding that side as always a really competitive City so I was in my money like when I was five or six you know we rented one of them mates got run over i right now might not be out of him I think our parents means it worries virtually I took a motorbike to label it I was devastated it was very wise and it was on the TV one morning the truth from Carmen had four and I was like oh five identity card okay so that that's the next class to do a bit of my jam fear because it make like Frankenstein bikes under the house and all the cheap we have the one common element between all the bikers we'd always take the brakes up never thought you need a break I have never even thought about it but now thinking about it it's as funny it's probably taught us sort of goodbye Cameron field also for this right here that's kind of that first experience screen to the basing in the morning Angus and I get our first interview of the trip after sporting a house on the edge of town filled with giant wrought iron sculptures when we named snowy Herrick Trevor Harris I call me snow I lived in well for since 1980 and many years ago I was a [ __ ] fish [ __ ] and I was on the grog all the time and and I give the grog up when I stepped had someone to do weekend so I just started to make things oh well Arabi the mate of mine you know like it was a bike rider back in the sixties and he rode for new South he was here one day when it all started and I had big big wheel I said I might make a bike out of this and put you on it and it just went from there I was here for 28 years that's a little I've done on me life and other than that sound a bit of fencing in that and I'm not trying to be a big night encounter nothing but I was a pretty good Shearer when I learned to share my old man told me he said you want to learn to share properly boy he said because you'll get in some trouble in your life he said so if you can cherish it properly no one can sign it and about you need my eyes oh no I haven't got any vice but I wouldn't like he riding before sleep anyway try to have no story about strangely I had this specific time when our mothers rode my bike you know about a the happy face I so doing if you think my little Luther my bike once a week alway to the push-up is one he'll the rest is history Island when the winning said I was 13 and 14 you know with the World Championships in 16 going up I was definitely in the shadow gasps so like dad like Mary's love or custom students so my mindset was like well if I can just try to achieve what energy or better at the same age and then like I deserve the same recognition which I was doing but the thing was it's like all of a sudden two years later estate sale was a big deal because the suggestibility one you know gentleman whatever and he was a winning national title in Baltimore in Africa he was representing strategy world community so I really looked after what he was doing but at the same power of one of the keeping the car goes ahead of the bullies into Canada and once they catch up we find gas after five hours of riding in plus 35 degree heat is like a zombie although he tries to play it down you just need to take one look at him to realize how deep he's gone judge it and you can type up taco 50c it's all 53:22 subscribe to see on the back coast here impossible to describe something today there are some big cracks appeared so at the end I think was just a heat which shouldn't really be but it's just all my energy just went and like so they would be the longest ride cuz I since I quit about three and a half that kind of visible it just gave me a little bit of nerves sort of it's not not settled in it's more the idea of like what if my body just can't handle it what if what if so let's just don't turn one day oh it's dark and that will be devastated the problem is it's only day to do one to me it's really painful like a lot of us a mental thing because you're trying to ride this positive school throughout this is a massive effort so if you break it down that way it's not so bad mentally but physically it's still really painful you know like because your body doesn't want to do it like your body's telling you your brain no like I want to do this because the primal thing I'm having decision really breaking down your masculine with you you're just basically really turning your voice everything it's got and you know getting chased by I can cheetah or something you body's that you don't need to be doing this done and then your brains can say we know we need to do it so there's like conflict [Music] I finished or Portugal I was 18 at the time I think it's one of the hottest food there is a bubble cutter to do away with there is the last race of the season moving in this weird like the NZ little bar or drinking vodka orange juice and there was all these old people in the bar this full of old people and then I was kinda like I'm so bored there's like only we need to take money or like one situation up under my guys also and there was a minute lady kneeling at the bar yet 13 it was probably like 65 and under smoked out and I was like can I buy you drink and she like kind of understood what I say there and I was like the only catch is and have a good night I'll buy you a drink we got to make out imma get the cheese cellar behind us today's guys whoever posted nationalities toothless old woman Portugal and I just thought it was the funniest thing unlikely like relief I said I didn't know me that well like to me that was human and they just like we're like oh my god no you see them after a shorter ride today everyone's in good spirits the Great Western hotels the local pubs provides beers and an explanation how the locals like the working redundant so easy out of 17 grain Oh juicy morsels you got another job well nothing doing I have got to do everything on this provided you use you don't see you get good bread of China money usually buy there is your your highness consecutive it's more about adrenaline lower where you can see those dogs get a desk job with a 80s car payment he was running and people with a knife should speak of this little despicable that's really good I currently hate didn't that contract man you watch too much since we get lucky coming all right from Cobra two to bring here today we're doing like 150 through common back road I just kinda looked on the map and look and we're cool this shitload of road trains around here and Val sounded guys is a pub last night's like to drive pretty fast there's to get off my dad [Music] it's a lot of you just talk about the future hate about black writing because you have so much time to ponder them at the moment when you're like man I would love like writing a few and far between how close did you come to putting this fear the closest I was this year after three so like tell mommy that I was going to wreck it because all those negative and that was really important when I saw the dotted expecting um this is had experience in that area earlier son I remember sending you an email like in June of them and give me in like you can always just leave but you might as well just ride the rest of the season out cuz it's there and then work it out the end of that as opposed to corner to south way through it kind of set myself a deadlines and into VD to like stop performing on something else and then yeah everything clicked and then when I start performing a nervous well beyond expectation yes God my mate Anthony from high school when the global financial crisis happened clean up all of his money out of the bank and bought gold bars and a shotgun and a rifle so we go down to the range and so he things like a dozen shots and I asked God you ever go and then I just lose any perspective or undoing and the part of the gun put my shoulder under my shoulder and I take the next shot a just comes off the scope takes that tongue go my forehead and I stand up pretend I'm adjusting my friends and go I'll see you back at the comments so I reiterate to like a Prince Alfred like stitch me up you'll have to wait [Music] [Applause] [Music] have including expectations on the helmet to be feeling sort of came in expecting just to be problem through the whole thing and that be part of it I'd rather avoid copy dot he did and then never do something like under the bike rider he's like [ __ ] out of copy what you do so he was like falling this everything I just would just do what I do it is kind of loud noticing just do that for I think he's genuinely enjoying riding a bike and enjoying going a different way about it coming into this like that was always the idea so you kind of expected that but then when you actually think about it then you think about a position he's put himself in as a professional bike rider completely unique who the [ __ ] else is doing there's no one else'll do so it's very selfish it's a selfish job so therefore it's you know like everything has to be right for you when I was writing like everything revolves around you like oh I can't clean that out cuz I only go and get a massage or like I can't keeping that out because I've you know got to go ride my bike then you know it's always you can't do certain things because you you're holding off yourself [Music] so I have a girlfriend of a couple of years now and a really close really loved her that we times in the season you're compromising things and you're really put in bike riding like that I really need to do it and you like the easier side of an amateur and then like as soon as I say that I'm not lucky talking about man like that's like all you've got you know like that's the best thing you have like what like you're [ __ ] out of touch you know and then all of a sudden you realize that yeah like Tina [Music] when the rain don't fall I'm what a mature company really prefer just to make something on the line [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we'll be old fifteen you want a two three four five they do 50 it is [Music] you [Music] Wow we're going to go up to 55 it's a good race pace you know there's not a flat race pace on a multi-stage to up to 57 and Gus is still there evil to get on the cattle climb so coming to MOCA you can 58 but I'll just good luck you'll want to do philosophy you're the man yes usefully Rosana on the rivet about AIG has poppy and mafia lock you up in the hand I was like no I can't do it if I do that that's like that's cool and that's like good meeting that you popped as I kind of knew that otherwise Oh meatball he's definitely pushing himself pretty hard and the three times run out would rather than just like just cool the visit you know the thing with motivation is like where the job black front drops off for less traffic getting sales will exponentially harder I was trying to give him a hand at this lean back up to the to the car and even T taswim doing that later so from a business like that they just like battle battle for like an extra food against the lies that creditors like well it sounds like I was like it does it you saw this mask but he was just like yeah to take it out in cycling context it's like getting a head held underwater all right if I guess with a red light like and then taking really hard trying to get to the top you know and then like a hand comes down like and push straight down that situation you like no [ __ ] you I don't need to help I'm going to swim to the top myself there's always guys are hanging around my bike riding me you shouldna making our way before those then then I just want collected under day before people now like with Facebook they can discover get to a commune Conte this guy wants a jersey number time trial to cap or other things for my collection please they're usually pretty pushy so I would just say I'm a collector of spoon and then they send me like some sort of eunuch spoon I'll send them just not know they're always it's them actually they get quite angry like I said for a little while they little bit confusing I think they realized like taking the piers already [Music] [Music] [Music] this would be a hard training order to take on anywhere but then to take it on the road it's harder again but I mean we did 200 cows in five hours today straight speed you know that's that's like what are you doing in towards and that sort of thing he did that what is it today was equivalent to what an accomplished bike rider can do and if you put it in the time frame of a month I can't put it together press we're coming back again it certainly brought back competitive spirit I'm being adequate competitive spirit I'm kind of I find myself Ryan for this real mongrel batting like I still haven't been challenged by anything we've done yet surprising [Music] ready I'm not someone this is redneck white boy it's a crucial time in training and all that sort of stuff but it's also a time where you need to or for me anyway I need you to sort of totally disconnect myself from that world it is probed by krytus I think it'll make them survive in the sport and other things was making them all around a wholesome interesting person you know regardless of whatever he does and regardless of whatever he wants to do post bike riding or within bike running you know I'd much rather hang out with someone who's interesting than someone who's not interesting so it's kind of cool that my brother's becoming there okay yeah Safety's on okay until you see that red dot that's what Ramon you see that red dot there yeah now if you pull the trigger it goes back the went through did you hear it [ __ ] me haha just remember that's going to kick back so then heat yourself in the face please go [Music] is that how intend is it oh pretty intense man a long few days of traveling and we're more isolated than we've been on the road into the tiny desert town of Mari barely a word was spoken but once we meet the guys who run the local pub lucky sparks up talking his way and shooting their rifle and getting us a tour of the underground cellars this is amazing this is 130 oh really yes so tell me about the whole self you've got there oh well I need a place to keep all my toys my room isn't big enough it's probably half before this Ross day just got bed and my xbox on TV so this is where I put my toys oh you're kidding tell it the kid Danny it's missing one you're on Chris you have these walls get that song sold me and there's a picture of Santa in there as well so a lot of fun the Maori herself with a beer and the singlets a free for cells big and the staff don't really seem to get it far this is the best pub or whatever go so in my life to be you may see something pretty perfect I get will do a very very good there we're going to order by using the Air Force review years I left the Air Force and worked in intelligence and security and time to come to Australia as far away from home as I can and I was here for about a year I've got all around the coast and everywhere I thought it's fun to sort of take a look at the centre so I bought a card fight to man waving and come tomorrow and walked into the pub it's pretty physical I asked them to preview a little bit help icing over so I jump behind the bar all a few drinks and enjoy a night at the end of the night they said we've got some work to do and I'm gonna make up most your night for a couple of weeks if you want it at the end of those two weeks the barks house got watched 40 or 50 percent would are with me or not I have no idea but I'm president but they may forget the design and often helps me play they spoke to me another possible time I am doesn't memory time isn't like it did before 6:00 in morning it we've got off that five we're at town called Maori which is in the other desert it was 40 degrees yesterday so we're getting on the road early so we can beat the heater since you would do about four hours so we'll have to be done by about 10:00 and this the worst thing ruffed Cooper Bailey today it's a bit of driving if you go past like air and go past Williams Creek Station and stuff like that so should be pretty fun day well yeah we are tied one on the last night the Maori public it was a very hospitable we had a few beers if you want anything so should make for an interesting morning just riding your bike in a place that is so special and then also so challenging it's hard to explain but for me that's like what my bike riding is I'm not a religious person but so it's like meditation for me to be able to go out there and ride like that and then when when I say ride like I mean get stuck in you know move were riding hard when Gus quit cycling four and a half years ago he had to contract offers on the table chair MacRay called me to offer me the contract and he was calling it like 11 o'clock so I had to quickly cooled down and go down I'm quitting I've got to go because I got to answer this call from Chan to tell him that I'm not accepting the contract it's really hard to explain like cycling was genuinely genuinely for about four or five years to me like a traumatic experience like it was really traumatic could almost remember the exact day I would have been maybe 14 or 15 I've been surfing in the morning body boarding and and I came home and I was like rudder gone via climber I was a big kid now so I thought okay well I want to be a climber so it means I needed to get real skinny and so I just started dieting like in the extreme I kind of do this need to be so extreme you know that I'd be like out training say and I would go for 4 hours and I wouldn't eat at all but it's got no energy it's like it's that you know you start your vision starts getting blurred and you start making really bad decisions you can't think properly and you know I'd go and do that and I do that down down on end and kind of just be destroying my body and then still go out and race and I'd kind of self-sabotage races so I wouldn't you know I wouldn't try as hard in certain races because I didn't want wind sprints because I fought them sprints would bulk you up too much I never remember this light feel cause I know this didn't feel good on the bike for like three years before I finished you know like I just didn't have one genuine equal grades so I think you just I just lost perspective and then it got so warped and all these hang-ups that I had and ideas that were impossible to break I remember thinking like what I'm doing is irrational it doesn't make any sense like I'm more intelligent than this but I couldn't break the cycle I had psychiatrist as I like that but I could always convince them that I was fine like I remember had to we're just going here yet he's doing really well like she's improved heaps and we were just being like I just took you for a [ __ ] ride and so that's why in the end I was like I have to leave like I'm leaving because I'll never be good in the state of mind that I'm currently in and and I'm just sick of never never being happy [Music] well it's a little bit pissed off because it was kind of like he was just abandoning ship moving me there you know like it's like yeah that sucks but like I have to keep doing it so why shouldn't you have to keep doing that was like my initial reaction I had it felt like he was abandoning what we were doing when I was 13 years old I got taught like a women the goddamn Tour de France I was on a bike attached to a breathing apparatus in Spain and with a doctor who looked after on saying we did this test with him on a bike and he said I said like you know right now your abilities as clues like the best 18 year olds and 13 as last billionth birthday and you could you know he's like I can see with no reason one on the future you won't be capable when the two in front it's okay you hear that many 13 like you know [ __ ] yeah let's do it and after a while you're just like I wish known it said that to you I'm glad it didn't work out that way cuz I would have been sit you know we wouldn't have done all this we would ya in updating our Twitter about you know the weather in Spain oh great another sunny day for training as we're leaving one of the migration one little town today the society saying warning like you and I going out into the wilderness very extreme danger ready can we just write that in there blind [Music] Bachmann [Music] I was an epic Sica jump Inga I really wanted it now now in your eyes [Music] just over 800 codes I think before we get to order we've got to get that so now there's no real plan but it's kind of writing until we either see somewhere to stop in camp or I'm nicely somewhere interesting that we think might be people spot the stop sir it's kind of interesting whiskey bottle yeah just in case why I haven't no it's comforting to know of the other so I'm just giving him a pocket there yeah and they were the fun two essential yeah especially when you have into the unknown you always good take a whiskey [Music] we're going to show his first shy directive I had like a really good Scout job girlfriend I had like a great home was moving forward in my career really rapidly like could do it as a [ __ ] I wanted and I wasn't at all happy I was couldn't work out why I wasn't happy once I finished black writing that kind of way you know it's the other extreme I was drinking too much partying too much because that was the only outlet that I could have him I just realized that all I would do was work my ass off all week and then go and get waited on the weekend and they stopped and kind of sucked off she looked back at the way I was living that foot Jesus then neither like change Ruby I control you so I started writing again just because there was a bike there and mom and dad spiked mistake there so writing [Music] now clothes generally on the opportunity you saw a high numbing anesthesia with your mental state it shopping in line next purgatory act couple rods Papa gives you a little rest [Music] okay I mean they've done a 200 day but these conditions of treatment [Music] the 1965 as we come into Wilbur only about 15 days off the 300 chamber we want to get up 70 up again they wanted to go up to 75 three functionary would be the finishing sprint speed in the last 200 liters all right we're going to ATK me there that they've gone so I just check the computer my bike and had the the fastest 40 kilometers of today's ride took us 40 minutes exactly that's a sick an hour average cool enough have this one very good first ever Stuart Highway cannonball run faster surrender kilometers ever announced to Thailand a couple of little interested in us for a while [Music] it was in photos make sure that the scratch and they work long and then deal issues with best resident in their quest may be that we waited for going to get the wrinkle drop in Japanese side house first time inside inside knowledge Natori what a map I got a painful my hat but can select 20 bucks ha ha today we're headed basically all room because we're so close we sort of figured will it bash out a big day today and get within sort of 15 or 20 caves of the rock the mood color this morning was like I'll does not get to indicate senators we hit the road would come later hour later because I could have discerned to be go block he is absolutely hunting at the moment and it's good to be able to train behind him and in the last few days it feels like I've gone from drowning in the pool and not being able to really contribute to the training ride so at least being able to hang in there you know we've been cranking from the start but it feels like we're really cranking now it's like why stop because you know I'm not broken now let's break me Chris you're up the car I think it's a little bit longer than we thought and I was thinking like our demands for success presence it's about like together that's different now and you can go to head back out great song sorry to the Borgata we're going to go hey I just felt a little bit of rain walk it's just like making it into sports as well been reduced number Josh run for a touchdown some results order the number of 140 men and these things remove the license well we've done on this trip is reengaged that you know memories we've tried to go down the road and to go through places that are far more interesting than the number of water flippers and you know the speed at which were averaging I think that like you can definitely do think you know differently to the way that been down the line it doesn't have to be this is big idea you know there's one like performance and that you have to block everything out there there's always people that never would have really known [ __ ] ximena's profession academy terrific I like the idea that you can take you know the most elite level and then bring it right back now and fill a city for unity I really wanted to do the last thing I really hard because you would never get it hard it's just kind of like watching math you don't a wind sort of like challenge a German an extreme like athletic effort like that blocks out any other possible Jordan and then exclusive to thousands of homeless where we [Music] [Applause] but you sure steady [Music] hahaha oh yeah just what is that like that was a beer cellar as you creek it's amazing how little you share with people about yourself about your about your prospects about your past and it's amazing how coming out somewhere like this you feel at ease you open up and you learn all these things about yourself you remember stories you'd forgotten about you talk about things that you were too afraid to talk about the strangers that you've met from minutes earlier my second you know even in one rod can change four or five times let alone over a season or in a career I just hope they're not going to remember have good that can be at the end of the day like those it's humbling [Music] what's that [Music] [Music] [Music]
