you awaken your bed to the smell of smoke it's still dark out you turn over to look at the alarm clock 5:00 a.m. you sigh roll out of bed and groggy stumble over to the water pump darn thing is always acting up you turn it off and head back to bed to continue your sleep the next time you wake up it's 8:00 a.m. first things first you check for mail at your front door there's a telegraph a note from the Western Union for one of your tenants Mary but when you walk out into the Hall to deliver Mary her message you smell it the same Smoky smell from last night and as you walk towards Mary's apartment the smell only gets stronger until you're standing outside her door and what was once an odor has evolved into a stench you knock on the door no answer something's not right you begin to panic and reach for the doorknob little do you know but behind Mary's door is a horrifying scene that will mystify the world for the next 70 years [Music] on the morning of July 2nd 1951 pansy Carpenter was delivering a telegraph to one of her tenants Mary reer nobody answered when she knocked on the door so she tried opening it but upon touching the door knob pansy immediately pulled back her hand it was hot so hot it burned her hand panicked pansy rushed back to her own apartment and phone the police when they arrived the officers discovered a pile of ashes in the living room where one of Mary's chairs used to be and upon further inspection of the ashes they found part of Mary's spine her left foot still wearing her black silk slipper and possibly most horrifying of all her skull which appeared to have shrunk to the size of a cup a thick layer of soot coated the upper walls and a few light switches surrounding the chair had melted with the rest of the apartment seemingly Untouched by the Flames that had presumably consumed Mary and her chair even the white sheets on her bed in a newspaper that sat on the floor not far from The Blaze were in pristine condition and if all that wasn't peculiar enough there was no clear source of the fire it was almost as if she had just spontaneously burst into flames but how could that be police began receiving tips from Neighbors and alleged Witnesses one person claimed he saw a ball of fire flying into Mary's apartment through the window while another insisted Mary was murdered and cremated off site with her remains being returned to her home it was safe to say that the police officers were stumped and after after a month of investigating the police decided to call a quits and turn the case over to the FBI before we investigate this mystery ourselves one of my good friends is something of a fire Enthusiast and I know he made a video on the topic so let's see what his expert opinion is first for centuries people Mary wasn't the first or last person to go up into flames under such mysterious circumstances in fact more recently in 2010 another incident occurred all the way across the ocean in Ireland Tom manion's smoke alarm went off early 1 December morning seeing no evidence of a fire in his home Tom went outside where he noticed smoke coming from next door the home of 76-year-old Michael farity worried he banged on the door to no response he called the fire department who quickly went to check out the scene Michael was found lying on his back dead and burnt to a crisp much like the previous Story the only parts of his home that were damaged were the floor and ceiling around him there were no signs as to what may have set the man on fire with firefighters even confirming his lit fireplace had not been the source there was no evidence of Foul Play or someone breaking into the home and when the state pathologist investigated the corpse she said there was no sign of heart failure even with Michael's history of type 2 diabetes and hypertension but beyond that the body was too badly burned to offer any further Clues as to why Michael farity unceremoniously burst into flames if any had had ever existed at all so what the heck is happening were these people secretly vampires who stood too close to the sunlight well even ignoring the fact that there are currently no scientifically documented cases of vampirism these two cases occurred during the night time so unless there's a new strain of moonlight sensitive vampires this seems to be out of the question for now now you may be thinking it very silly of me to mention something as Supernatural as vampires but when you consider that in the case of Michael farity the coroner cited his death as spontaneous anous human combustion shc for short you may realize that even scientists are turning to the Paranormal for explanations shc is commonly associated with people who suffer from alcoholism addiction Reckless intimacy and even those with thoughts of self harm perhaps to explain it Away Paul Ry of London's Royal Society described shc as a process in which a human body allegedly catches fire as a result of heat generated by internal chemical activity but without evidence of an external source of ignition the first documented case of shc was in the late 1400s in Milan a knight named sir palonis vus is said to have burst into flames right in front of his parents after a few glasses of strong wine Countess Cornelia zangari debandi of Cessna also suffered a similar fate in 1745 with only her partially burned head and stocking adorned legs surviving the blaze much like Mary reer alternative scientist and British journalist Richard Milton has cited other cases that he believes are proof of shc for instance 61-year-old Jeannie saffin was sitting in her kitchen with her father when he suddenly saw a flash of light from the corner of his eye he turned to ask gennie if she also saw it when he realized that it was she who had burst into flames horrified he pulled his daughter over to the sink to put out the Flames which were coming from her face and abdomen the surrounding room and even all the clothes she was wearing other than her red cardigan remained unscorched even weirder was that when the Emergency Services arrived she was still conscious despite the third degree burns that covered her body Genie eventually passed away 8 Days Later her relatives decided it was likely shc but the coroner disagreed so does spontaneous human combustion really exist and if it does is there any actual explanation behind it self-proclaimed expert on spontaneous human combustion and author of a blaze Larry Arnold came up with the subatomic pyron Theory to explain shc this Theory says that there are super tiny but high-powered particles dubbed pyrons that can pass through atoms sometimes one of these particles hits another particle just right and causes a small explosion inside the atom this explosion acts like a tiny bomb that goes off in the body called the internal Hiroshima effect which results in spontaneous human combustion of course there isn't any concrete scientific evidence to suggest that pyrons exist and as far as we know they are completely made up but a great name for a Transformer other researchers have cited an increase in methane production in the human gut as a possible cause however Brian Dunning of the skeptoid podcast debunked this idea pointing out that cows produce a lot more methane than humans and there aren't any reports of spontaneous cow combustion but there has to be an explanation for these people suddenly incinerating so if not spontaneous human combustion then what happened to all these people while absolutely horrifying it's safe to say that there is actually a scientific explanation for these events in the case of Mary reer the FBI denied her death was caused by shc but instead cited a phenomenon called the wick effect in essence it postulates that the body acts like a candle the clothing and hair as the wick and the body fat as the wax and as long as there is fat on the body the fire will continue once the fire runs out of fuel it will die out which would explain why the less fatty parts of the body like limbs are often left behind to better demonstrate this it's best to look at an actual experiment conducted by bbc1's QED of course using a human subject was morally out of the question so instead they used a pig's carcass wrapped in a blanket and I don't mean the little hot dog or deres the result was very much like the supposed spontaneous human combustion cases we discussed once set on fire the pig burned for 5 hours eventually turning into Ash with the exception of the limbs this explains how the fire was contained to one place but if you're on fire wouldn't you you know try to put yourself out or at the very least radically run or flail about the room it's kind of hard to ignore being on fire but in each of the cases we've discussed the deceased seems to have remained relatively motionless throughout the whole ordeal well according to Mary's son in the days leading up to the fire she had become anxious about an upcoming move when he went to visit her on the day of the incident she claimed to have taken two sedatives had planned on taking two more before bed and might have suffered from complications most victims of supposed shc like Mary were elderly and more likely to suffer from a condition like a stroke or heart attack in their sleep so it's possible that Mary had already been incapacitated to the point that she never realized she was burning while this still doesn't explain how she caught on fire in the first place Mary's son also mentioned that she was a heavy smoker due to her old age and the sedatives it's likely that Mary had accidentally fallen asleep while smoking and the hot ash from the cigarette had ignited her night gown another possibility is she died from smoke inhalation before she even woke up to realize she was burning in the case of Michael farity the coroner did cite his cause of death as s shc but it is more likely he was set on fire by an external Source just like Mary there was a fireplace nearby so it is possible that Embers ignited his clothing unfortunately we may never know most of the occurrence discussed in this video have possible reasonable explanations as to why they happened but we really can't be sure since the only people who witnessed them met their early demise as fun as it would be to assume aliens shot lasers through Mary reeser's window I like to look at things more scientifically snap bro the snake people not aliens okay get it right oh yes of course my mistake so they're from this planet then no they
