We need more Daft Punk.
Let's dissect this video:
We have the "new" Weeknd killing his old, long-haired self. Out with the old, in with the new. That much is obvious. So this kind of music is a new step for him.
We get a close-up of a white cross piece on his chest. Make note of the color. The theme of color is important in this video. Everything so far is in monotonous black or dark blue.
We see him walking among all these accolades, trophies, records, etc. He's walking through his past, seeing all the things he's done. This will be destroyed and overwritten soon enough.
A pink cross hangs on the wall at the end of all his awards, which he then uses to destroy said awards. This is so far the only instance of the pink color in the video, but it will come up later. Abel talks about his relationship with God in how he says "A hundred on the dash get me close to God, we don't pray for love, we just pray for cars." It could be representing a false god, like money or fame - which are things that he worshiped because of his career. He also mentions how the "P1 [is] cleaner than my church shoes," lending credit to the idea that he's become materialistic over religious, praising his possessions rather than going to church. That ideology, it seems, make his accomplishments worthless, and so he destroys them.
The cat is all black, just as this new Weeknd is. That, along with the painting of Daft Punk with a panther in the picture and the fact that Abel is in all black, may mean that the cat represents Abel before his transformation into a huge artist. Which brings me to my next point...
We see that the cat has now grown into a panther. It is larger than what it used to be, much like what the Weeknd has become since his underground days.
Finally, we pull together the dichotomy of the two striking colors seen in this video: white and pink. Pink represents the past and his old self/music. White represents a rebirth, the new, the future. Notice the color of the P1's taillights: pink like the cross, which represented his old way of thinking. The headlights are white like his chain. It points the way to the future and a rebirth in the Weeknd's music.
TL;DR: This video's symbolism was top notch, making for a fucking fanstastic watch.
I liked it a lot.
I fucking love daft punk
Love the collaboration, and I hope The Weeknd goes a little nuts on his new album. I liked the last one, but it felt like it was somewhat playing it safe considering the albums preceding it.
I kind of love this
I like his new haircut.
In case anyone didn't get it, when he said "look what you've done" he's referring to haters/people who didn't believe in him. The song is about his success.
SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET ME A HD PICTURE OF 1:19. That painting is incredible.
