[Music] I'm Monica Mannion and I believe that updating your home doesn't have to take a ton of time or money I show people how to get Pinterest were these spaces that are just right for them it doesn't even look like our house give me one weekend I'll give you five projects you'll have a completely transformed space by Monday [Music] guys this weekend's gonna be a biggie it's a kitchen dining room combo and it's kind of a weird layout the thing is I don't think it's that far from being epic so by the end of this began I want to create an actual open-concept kitchen that's light and bright and just perfect for entertaining yes this is a wonderful galley kitchen okay so narrow galley kitchen connect at designing room yes something like that yes hi I'm Regina and I'm Kenneth and we're excited to have Monica come in and renovate our kitchen it's gonna be awesome it's extremely tiny it has these old cabinets there's a small little pocket window where you just literally look down in between it's like you're going through a drive-through along the line up hi how are you and you have a big guy so unfortunately that's not really healthy for my knees this is it every time you cook dinner every time you have guests over your back is killing you and you are literally in the turkey and I'm like here and I'm pulling through and I'm Melana here and then everyone's sitting here while there's suppliants is all over the place is here and we're just trying to configure things around oh and our spoons and forks are all right there is over here you wash your dishes and then go around the water like he has so many scars on his head from hitting his head on the cabinet door she cuts my hair and every time she cuts my hair she's like oh yeah you have another one it was Tuesday nights at Thanksgiving my dream kitchen would be an open floor plan and nice homey feel I want to be able to be watching football while she's cooking I say hey hon can I get a beer and I could just toss my Anna but I didn't come right so my aunt so overall by the end of this weekend obviously I want this to feel much more open and have a kitchen dining room with an open floorplan I also want to give you kind of that country chic style you're looking for it's a lot of work in a tall task for a weekend but I'm pretty confident we can do it and now seeing how awkward that was I mean we just it means like four years ago yes and I really needed to never remember him at all so what I wanted you is take this wall all the way down to a half wall I know it's not load-bearing so that's good news however I don't know what's in the wall yet we find electrical wires or ductwork it's really gonna change my plans I mean rerouting all that can add so much time and we only have a weekend for this makeover so we're just gonna have to open it up and see what we get yeah officially suit it up first so we're gonna take the cabinetry down and we need to investigate this wall you never know what you're gonna find and I'm hoping we find a whole lot of nothing strong tennis has been ready to rip these off the wall for four years now right now just gonna grab it and just yeah we are going to Phase two are gonna be these countertops but channel your beastmode because we're keeping the lowers so just want the countertops out and the and out it goes alright phase three of demo this parts gonna require a little less muscle and a little more investigating so my thought is to take the wall down to about this height just above this outlet here because we have the base cabinetry there so we need it to butt up against something but I know that we have some stuff going on in this wall so if the electric and everything is going down that's good cuz this lower portions gonna stay no big deal if it's going up possibly a big deal okay so Jason what he's gonna do is his contractor thing he's gonna look behind the outlets maybe put a few holes in and then he's gonna tell us what we're doing with so we're gonna look in the box here we're going to pull some wires out and we're going to look in the box and we're gonna see if we can figure out whether the wires are coming from the top or bottom unfortunately they are coming from the top in that box well one maybe we can work around let's check the other side never really know what you're gonna find when you start opening up walls alright well there's one coming from the bottom and there's one coming from the top could be wire going from this to that going to the light so we'll check this one too you're badly either make or destroy my kitchen I got one coming from the bottom and one going up this is the complete opposite of what I wanted to find all right so here's what we're dealing with he did deliver some bad news so it basically means that on the other side at the edge the wires are running up to the ceiling then to that light then on this side they're running all the way up two sets of wires and then over so that means we'll probably have to not take the wall down yeah if you guys have this massive attic when you climb up there run it over but this would be an issue of like holls holls holls holls holls holls yeah we might have another day of rerouting electric so since I promised you a new kitchen in a weekend I think the wall needs this yeah but there's always a plan B kind of just making this up as I go but I was gonna put some shelves here with some really cool canisters and jars and things I'm thinking I could put that here and since the wires are on the left and the right side maybe just cut an opening in it then have floating shelves in the opening and put the jars there so you'd have storage you'd have a little bit of a like line-of-sight to the living room and a little bit of natural light coming through sounds good I like it you like it okay I got you smiling it's much better than what it was so I'm happy with that alright so in order to do this we'll just I guess use ham talk yeah hand drywall so we'll open up some drywall make sure we don't cut any wires so just kind of a nice rectangle in the middle oh all right let's do it [Music] the reality of having that wall being taken down and kind of made my heart break but then her quick thought process of opening up the wall partially was not the ideal situation but I think it's still going to be a great idea in the end [Music] all right so I have all of our cabinet doors lined up out here and we are going to paint them okay cuz right now like we have two different colors going on neither of them I'm very fond of how about you no not really I didn't think so so we're working with actually two different materials these were like stock cabinets and this is actually like almost looks like a homemade plywood cabinet yeah so for these ones we're gonna need to sand them down with it palm sander a little bit and just a glass just a bit and then these ones they look a little glossy but they're not nearly as glossy so what I'm gonna have you do is kind of use just a different sandpaper they just need like a rough up so now I'm just brushing off all the dust so that we have a nice clean surface these actually sand it down pretty well okay so the boring part is done now we can actually start transforming these the easiest way to paint cabinetry is actually with a paint sprayer okay you want to use the right paint than the right application so what I got for you it's cabinet enamel so it's still a water-based paint which means it's super easy to clean up and everything but it has a little bit of enamel in it which gives it that like nice gloss shine cabinet finish yes I want to show you the color good ready okay so out here it looks white it's not sometimes when you pick a color and you see it right in the can you're like wait is that the same color but once you put it on and let it dry generally it dries darker okay so have you ever used a paint sprayer before I have not it's gonna change your life so it open this up just push the button and turn it out and another awesome detail is that we don't need to water down the paint nice so there's no like perfect ratio we can just plop it in and go all right so now this goes directly down in the key to the paint sprayer is applying the paint lightly and evenly the beauty of it is that it'll give us a super smooth almost factory like finish on the cabinet doors when we're done all right so that's the first coat super easy what do you think so much quicker that hand roll is so much easier and it has a really nice smooth finish to it which is my favorite part so these need to dry before we can put another coat on the key is kind of a couple light coats kind of repeatedly so let's let these dry here and we'll go in and get the rest of the cabinet doors all right muscles right here all right the greatest weight about the same thing so you and I are gonna work in a project these are the new cabinets we're gonna put up where the old one for these are upper wall cabinets we're actually gonna use them in your dining room side but not in the wall promise I'm just filled with surprises perfect so what we're actually gonna do is turn these two upper cabinets into a dining buffet oh okay so I know that you guys love to entertain and you want more space to put food when you're serving and I thought that this would be a really cool build that we could do easily awesome okay okay kitchen cabinets come with an unfinished sign because typically they're butted up against each other or the walls but then they sell these great little panels so this is the first step we are going to put them on all four sides we're gonna use a combination of liquid adhesive and little Brad nails and we are going to put legs on the bottom of this buffet so we're gonna put four legs on each okay so these are mounting plates that we're gonna use to put the legs on the kit comes with everything we need I'm just gonna buck these right up into the corner make it easy we don't even have to measure we have our two cabinets now we could put this together but I thought it would look cool to build little shelves in between here where we can put two little baskets and kind of hold some stuff and just kind of mix up the style a little bit okay before we can put the shelves up we need something for the shelves to rest on we are gonna cut this one by down to kind of create a little ledge that the Shelf could sit on put a little bit of glue on the back of the wood and then we're gonna use the nailer and tack it right in on the side cool okay so now what we need to do is cut down the little shelves that will go in here and then cut one long piece that will be the top this is gonna be the shelf material I'd like them to be about 18 inches apart and then we're just gonna nail down into the ledger boards that we created and the last thing that we need to do build wise is cut our top two sides okay all right so we wanted to have a bit of an overhang on the front so stretch it forward and then you should have like an inch to an inch and a half all right just give me a little bit more here we go perfect all right come round and a look all right this is amazing you like it I like it that's a lot more stories it now looks like a dining room buffet we're gonna paint the entire thing so it'll look seamless I get always meant to be together and then I have some really fabulous hardware pop in some baskets and we're gonna go beautiful [Music] first things first this morning paint Kennison regina are painting the dining room walls white it's not that big of a change from what they have but it'll actually make a huge difference by knocking down that yellowy tone of the current paint color it's gonna feel much crisper and cleaner morning Maureen how are you I am good ready to jump into a project sounds great alright well I wanted your project I wanna do it fast cuz it's freezing out here I have your new countertops awesome you're ready to see them okay that was supposed to be a little more dramatic oh wow there you go I love the color what do you think I love it so it has like a combination of light Gray's a little bit darker Gray's and even some whites so kind of like the color we used for the cabinetry and then what you painted the walls all kind of come together here with the counters awesome okay now this is solid surface in stock laminate countertops but laminate I say it a hundred times over has come such a long way like this is not gonna stain it's just gonna be awesome in your kitchen so we only need to make one cut on this we need to cut in the sink okay okay so the sink I picked they always come with the template so basically I cut all around the edges and it literally gives us the perfect thing we just trace it okay so I also mark the center point so the set my center line needs to line up with the center line of the template after tracing our sink cutout template we're using a paddle bit in the corner to create a hole for our jigsaw blade to get into the jigsaw is the perfect tool for precise interior cuts like this [Music] [Applause] [Music] so there's a single beautiful it's pretty big it is it's it's actually almost the exact same size as your old one but it's a single vessel so it just looks so much bigger awesome okay let's get this cleaned off and get it inside it's freezing out here and then with awesome alright alright this one goes on this side and Candice this is gonna be a really tight snug fit so we're gonna have to kind of maneuver with the outlet alright that's what I'm not gonna bout that is a good fit alright let's put the other side in and then we'll deal with the sink one of the other things I love this kind of like in stock laminate is cuz the installation is really simple I mean we cut it can we screw it up underneath there's no like fabricating and pretty measuring and all this alright so that size all in and secure but cuz you'll notice like this side is a little wobbly here you almost never find perfectly level counters and cabinets so what we need to do is shim them all right so this start skinny and get thicker and that way it kind of acts as a leveler if you need to go up more or less and then we'll screw it in good yep all right those are some level countertops yes thank you shims all right what do you think looks great I've one question the middle oh so good question you don't like that gap no I'm not so much okay so we kept the same layout in base cabinetry that you had before okay and if you remember you had like a tiny little piece of wood that was like trimming this out yeah what we're gonna do is take that up one level further and we're actually gonna use a bit of a wider piece of wood to run along here so that you can actually rest things on it as well awesome kind of how to work with the design is we're not gutting your entire kitchen okay sounds good but Jay and I have a lot to finish up today and this is actually the last time you're gonna see this kitchen until we're done yeah kicking me out I am kicking you out so all right it might be a late one but we're gonna get this done and we'll let you know when you're ready all right [Music] okay so for my secret project we are replacing the flooring in this kitchen we needed to do a little bit of prep work because the old peel and stick tile was in pretty rough shape so Jay and I put down luan we cut it to size he's just stapling it directly into the floor so we have a nice even solid surface to work off of so I saw an amazing high-end floor it was like a combination of slate tiles and wood and we're gonna get that same look using my favorite peel and stick tile okay don't hate on it it holds up really well especially for a family and we're gonna do something super cool with the pattern so that it looks too Bryant luckily for us the old flooring is something that we can staple right down into so it's making it really easy the other thing that's working out for us is that it's a really small footprint so it's not that much boring that we have to tackle all right so we've got everything stapled down really well and we swept the floor perfectly as clean as we can get it that's really important when you're dealing with peel and stick and we're gonna snap a few chalk lines so that we can keep everything nice and square for my peel and stick flooring I chose two different types and shapes we have a really big 18 by 18 square in a lighter color grey and then in the darker gray Oh looking like a wood tone we have a like narrow plank and what I'm going to do is do a combination of these two and it's gonna really give it a very high-end look I bet you no one's gonna ever guess that it was peeled stick you can press in the beginning with your hands but then you ultimately will want to go over it with a roller these are intended for installing all different kinds of floor applications so really for this we're not going to need to make cuts until we get to the edge of the room so we're gonna do it lay as much of it as we possibly can then we'll go around the edge and make all of our cuts so we are gonna use a utility knife alright so then once he's cut it it's kind of like it scores it just snaps perfectly so this is gonna be covered by a threshold anyway so we want to put the factory edge touching the factory edge and even though your cut is perfect we can hide it with threshold thank you all right so that's basically the process we're gonna keep peeling and sticking and trimming and before we know it this will be done [Music] right now we're getting ready to see what the final product is so inches walking back and forth we were like okay is that suppose to be in time for reveal yet now it's that moment and don't know what to expect but we're ready to run up the steps yeah all right guys well this has been one heck of a transformation on the count of three you can open your eyes one two three Oh [Music] phenomenal doesn't even look like our house unbelievable this is like out of a magazine I mean just taking those cabinets down do you remember what about I don't even remember what it was like I feel like we're walking into a model home is absolutely perfect these are our cabinet yes those are the ones we painted I put the hardware on ha ha those are the countertops you helped me put in so like you've seen pieces of it it's just once it all comes together all five of the projects really help with the transformation this is the cutout is perfect isn't it not only is it it's mind-blowing perfect it's a lot I love it it makes you feel like you are in all the rooms together yes yes I feel like we were able to really embrace kind of the quirky funky layout of this kitchen and now I almost feel like it's like added value like you have all this area here for when you're serving a meal and you're entertaining and then you have plenty of prep space over there you have double cabinetry space it's just like actually quite functional yeah we even fix the drawer so you can keep your silverware perfect I love that sink I love how big it is oh it's huge huge huge and then like remember how we talked about this being a funky setup by just putting a flat like shelf here I mean it's actually functional like right now I have it styled for beauty we'll say but it's totally gonna be functional and it really makes this kind of thing work I love yes it was Kenneth Oh skills there I loved that it was amazing it was done within 30 minutes literally 30 minutes but it looks very high-end like it looks like you would have gone to the store and been like oh can I afford it like I don't know it's a lurch there's even something you haven't seen yet that is one more of my secret projects do you want to see it sure so my surprise come in here look oh my god I love that word is this dude this is peel and stick and I just did a funky pattern with it really God how beautiful isn't he I would never have thought to do a design with that seems like there's more room in here I don't know why but it just feels like it's more this is like a small footprint but we were able to have a lot of fun at the design and just go a little bit bolder and then look this is like your whole view now and you're in this kitchen everything you could see everything okay and you're not going to feel lonely no seriously I have no words to explain how I feel right now oh thank you so much for everything so much honestly honestly thanks well that was one heck of a transformation you guys and I would love to know what you think leave me a comment below tell me what you liked we didn't like what you do differently I want to hear
