'The Wanderer...' | Vlog #4

hello everyone welcome back to another vlog i have unfortunately forgotten my camera um i left it at the repair shop in my toolbox there so i'm on the phone i've been in the workshop all weekend so i thought what a perfect time to try and get some progress on this defender i've i've not filmed any of it because it to be honest it's been quite boring i've been finishing off the aluminium framework there was a it was pretty much there but you know what it's like the last 10 takes 90 of the time and trying to get the last few time bars the last few couple of tabs needed drilling holes a few bolts here and there time consuming fiddly bit of work um but it's looking good so this is it now i've taken out the coffee machine and the grinder i think i keep saying it i know but that is it now that's all done so this is my cubby hole here the next job is gonna be cladding all of that in stainless steel i've got four two meter sheets of stainless steel it's food grade stainless steel so it's just the job for this and the next tedious job that i've got is to uh i've got my cardboard template so i'm gonna have to sort of refine those make them a little bit neater and then cut out each section so i'm gonna do like the cubby hole on one side and work out each panel left right top roof some things need cladding on both sides because it's you see both sides of it and i'm going to just tackle each face at a time cut out the stainless steel put them and rivet them in place it is going to be a big job i'm looking forward to it makes a bit of a change i'm kind of sick of welding aluminium box section now so quite quite a welcome change to be doing the stainless steel but it's sunday afternoon getting late in the day and i've got to head down to the repair shop again so sorry i haven't filmed any of this process but trust me it was fairly dull it would have been a really boring vlog if i did you know what lucia's in this week and i know she's in this week so i will try and catch her at lunchtime the chat with pimple jeff seemed to go down really well so i will try and catch lucia and let's try and have a chat with her just a quick note i wanted to say thank you the amount of subscribers and comments and followers and interest in this channel has rocketed in the last few weeks it's just gone absolutely mad and it's really rewarding because it is a lot of work doing all [Music] [Applause] i had to pull open quick to come and show you this because i drive past this ah it just makes me so sad to see this look at that i can't really get any closer than this it's in someone's field i can't be the only one that's seen this isn't it cool quick little stop off for you and see if it's not a 400e it's a double decker bus but yeah i just think the opportunities the possibilities i wish i had a workshop big enough to fit that in i would love to have a go at that anyway better carry on places to go people to see catch you in a bit monday morning here we go you can tell us monday morning because i'm nice and clean i've got my hair it's looking all right hopefully i don't know what is going on with the weather today i mean that sun in the background looks deceiving you'd think it was nice and warm but it's absolutely freezing the gray clouds up there i don't know what's going to happen it looks like it's going to snow almost why is it snowing in april it's ridiculous look at this snow first time ever we've been here whilst it's snowing look it's settling on my shirt this is ridiculous we're trying to work outside i don't know what to say there's no chance my paint's going to dry is there look at it this is mad it's snowing at the repair shop [Music] it's wednesday morning i've gotten early this morning it's about was it half seven quarter to eight i couldn't sleep so i thought i'll sod it i'll just come in and i just i quite often do this i just wander around the museum and it's just nice sometimes to clear my head it's good fun and i love it and i absolutely love my job i love being here and doing this but it can be stressful and i find it's very it's all consuming it takes over and the two things i'm working on this week i've got a really intricate paint job and i'm painting something that's quite large it's really important that i get it right and the other thing that i'm working on is complicated in a sort of nuts and bolts away it's a fiddly old machine and it's sometimes these things i just wake up at night just thinking oh no what about if i do that what if i do that have i got that it's just yeah constantly your brain is constantly spinning and thinking of these things and i want to do the right thing for these items and for these people who own these things and these these objects these artifacts of their life and i think it's really important that we do the right thing and i think the only way you can get there is by thinking about it the practical side is not really i mean it has its challenges and it's you know it's problems but it you can overcome those you know with you know speaking to someone else there's always ways to overcome it the moral side of things and what to do what's best to do for these people that own these amazing old artifacts that you know mean so much to them and then they're trusting me to work on it and to take it apart and it's really tough to make sure that what i'm doing is justified and it's i'm doing it for the right reasons maybe they want to use it maybe they want to put it in a museum so you know you deal with things in different ways depending on what that end goal is when i'm standing at that bench with jay about to give these things back to these people and they haven't seen it and they don't know what i've done it's it is a nerve-wracking time and i think that's why i get so anxious so i thought i'd come in this morning and have a little wonder around i mean look at this in the background look at these cool buildings look at this one some good news the boot cells are starting again after the first lock down they started up again and there were quite strict procedures with a one-way route and only so many people at a time and stuff like that obviously wearing masks i absolutely can't wait to get back to those boot sales anyone in the uk i i'm in the kent area kent essex sussex around that bottoms of south south east anyone that knows any boot sales let me know please send the link below i'd absolutely love to hear some recommendations now they're starting up again i can't wait to get out there and fill my workshop with more unnecessary rusty tools that i don't need one of my favorites this is up there with one of my favorite favorite houses here timber frame thatched roof beautiful kitchen garden look at this garden the guys that work here maintain all this it's just so nice i love those little hurdles little chestnut fencing there [Music] blue skies sun shining i still had to scrape the ice off my windscreen but it's showing a signs of getting a bit warmer which is so good oh my good god what's going on here it's amazing it's not even flinching [Music] it's amazing how much the weather changes your mood i feel in good spirits today and the rest of the week is going to be good i've got to get back to work now and i will hopefully see you at lunchtime it's now friday i've been promising this and we've just been busy haven't we yeah have you been busy in there yeah some major things have come in and yeah it's uh it's very ex for me some very exciting things and i'm hoping it's going to be really exciting for you guys as well when you see them the new series is going out on april the 21st eight o'clock bbc one how do you know that april 21st april 21st bbc1 8pm are you in the first episode yeah would you say that's one of your one of the from your favorites that you fixed here it's certainly one of the most important items really because it's so rare you're kidding a podcast no with with conservators we've we what do you want we can give them a shout out now people can tune in where's that do we know do you know who it's with uh it's called the c word it's a conservation podcast for me being outside i see people walking in with an oil painting under their arm i don't need to be wrapped up i never get to see it and then i see them leave looking chuffed and over the moon but i never get to see anything of what you're doing you're hiding in the barn you need to come out and see me more well you know i come out here whenever i can i'm always taking stuff from your little hot over here you're nicking my pots of paint yeah that's it you know seeking your advice it's good there's no time to talk in the day i mean the fact that we're doing this is quite unique this is why it's taking me a week to actually get you find you sitting down for a second it's been so busy it's just coincidence that it's come together today because we haven't planned to meet and i've ended up sitting on the floor out the front we're out by the main road rheumatism [Laughter] right well on that note thank you very much lucia there we go for the opportunity dog and i hope we can work been good we've had good fun sorry about the start of this video dan has told me off he gave me a good turning off for filming a portrait so sorry about that start but i've learned my lesson landscape
