I have a Rift, but not a Vive. But I'm also a Linux user who hates having to boot into Windows for any reason really (although I obviously do it). So my days as a Rift owner and not a Vive owner are probably numbered. In fact I'm reminded now of how much I appreciated Valve for bringing Steam to Linux.

Red Hat's David Airlie gave a talk at linux.conf.au about Vulkan. He was half of the team which created the open source RADV driver for Vulkan on Linux using AMD hardware, building on various other pieces of software.

At 37:35 he said that Valve had hired someone to work on that too. Presumably this is Andres Rodriguez who they hired in November.

From 39:26 he talked about Valve shipping him a Vive and said he'd heard they have the Dota 2 viewer running.

More precisely: The rest of their VR software stack. "The Vive" support, as in positional of the HMD and controllers, appears to be working pretty will with SteamApps/common/SteamVR/drivers/lighthouse/bin/linux64/driver_lighthouse.so already. It's just the rest of the rendering stack, that needs work, and that also includes their unity and unreal engine integration.

If you idle in #radeon, you can sometimes see that people like Plagman are indeed working on it: https://people.freedesktop.org/~cbrill/dri-log/index.php?channel=radeon&show_html=true&highlight_names=&date=2017-01-15

Awesome! I can't wait for that. The vive is the only reason I boot to windows. Before tax software went online years ago, it was the last piece of software I needed windows for. Who'd have thought that VR software, which is historically Linux/UNIX based, would be the thing that makes people use windows. Can't wait to develop in Linux again!

This will be big for certain applications. Supercomputers run Linux and users need to be able to view their results. Right now they have to use 3D mini theaters and caves but once Linux support gets sorted it lowers the cost of entry's and opens up all sorts of possibilities and even remote collaborations.

It's about time. It's almost been an entire year now since the Vive came out.

It's nice to see Linux getting some love.

Serious question, what will it take for Linux to finally become a mainstream OS for everyone, not just developers and hobbyists?

I'd like windows to die, or at least not be so annoying.

Fuck Linux Hipsters. You want games? Play them on your Windows box and stop your elitist whining.
