so about three weeks ago i uploaded a video talking about one of my favorite obscure horror games called it steals and wow you guys really enjoyed that one and you have no idea how happy that makes me out of all my videos i've uploaded on here that was probably the one i was hoping you guys would enjoy the most since at the time it was such an underrated game and obscure horror games are my absolute favorite video subject so in light of that video doing so well i went hunting for another horror game to talk about today and i found one that i love there are quite a few contenders for this video which i will certainly be talking about in future uploads but the one that stood out to me the most was another game by the it's steel's developer zekers the game is called the upturn and i found it while browsing zeker's other project shortly after finishing its steals what immediately piqued my interest about this game was how it presented itself the upturn was supposedly a comedy horror game about trying to get to your room in a massive hotel for the dead which is a premise that i couldn't ignore checking out for myself and oh man am i glad that i did the upturn is an extremely entertaining horror game which somehow manages to effectively blend together both goofy characters and environments as well as genuinely terrifying intense chase scenarios going into this game i expected to not be scared of it in the slightest because of how it chose to present itself but somehow against all expectations no oh my god no this game is absolutely horrifying so that's why i want to talk about it today in this video i want to talk about everything that makes this game so charming and likable ranging from its characters soundtrack and environments and then i want to break down how despite all that it still manages to be an extremely effective horror experience so without further ado let's delve into it uh [Music] so before i delve into anything else let's talk about what the upturned even is the upturned is a third-person physics-based horror game where we the player are trying to get to our room at the very top of the upturned hotel the elevator we're forced to take to get to our room constantly breaks down however and the only way to keep it going is by entering the many levels the game has in store for us to find replacement modules for it getting through these levels is accomplished by running around and avoiding monsters platforming as well as utilizing this game's most important mechanic throwing literally anything that you can find yeah i wasn't joking when i said the premise of this game is ridiculous but that's what drew me into it so early on even if this game didn't end up scaring me then i still would have absolutely loved it as an experience the simple mechanic of being able to pick up and throw whatever you find around you is incredibly fun to mess around with and is usually integrated into each of the game's levels in a creative and satisfying way you can chuck things to kill monsters flip switches give yourself more height to make tricky jumps as well as using the mechanic to break glass to grab health kits and get through windows the core mechanic of throwing the items in the environment is very well integrated into every level making it feel extremely satisfying when used correctly and making everything feel very tied together this mechanic also perfectly coincides with the mechanics of the many creative monsters which you have to deal with while traversing the hotel almost if not all the monsters we can encounter in this game have some kind of mechanic revolving around our character's ability to throw items whether it be the first enemies we meet who we just knock out by hitting them with items the terrifying slug monster who gets lured to locations we throw items or my favorite enemies in the game the jacks who become throwable items the core mechanic that the game wants us to use is always present somewhere and how the enemies function making them all very entertaining to try and deal with especially when there's multiple at a time and speaking of the enemies in this game you're probably wondering what makes this game scary after hearing the description of how it works and my answer to that is frantic-ness this game pulls out everything it can to make each encounter with an enemy as frantic and chaotic as possible leading to some of the most panic inducing gameplay i've ever experienced don't believe me just take a look at some of the scenarios i was unfortunate enough to get caught up in oh my god [Music] no every single time an enemy showed up while i was playing this game it put me in such a horrible panic and i think that's for a couple reasons firstly the behavior of all the enemies themselves are very well designed to be very intimidating to the player the most common enemies in the game are very fast and can sometimes be extremely difficult to hit leading to these stressful moments where you have to try and run past them to grab another item to try again and then we get encounters like the aptly named fat pajama man who comes to the ceiling and begins to charge towards you only being able to be stunned a single time before it doesn't work anymore this enemy in particular was what made me realize how intense this game could get his massive frame took up every room you went into making him feel extremely intimidating despite his ridiculous design and name and then there's the fact that he's effectively invincible and he only ever shows up when it's least convenient for you and that's not even mentioning the way he's first introduced as we make our way through an otherwise ordinary level we suddenly hear the sound of something quickly approaching from above becoming louder and louder and louder until suddenly [Music] oh damn he wasn't even stunned by that this was an enemy that made me very afraid of what future monsters i'd encounter and considering what does come next that anxiety is justified the last of these monster designs i want to mention is the scariest one of all in my opinion the water slug this enemy's level is filled to the brim with this water which completely slows down all of your character's movement if you fall in the water at all the slug can hear it and begin swimming towards you to eat you whole the only way to avoid this monster is by jumping into the many objects that scattered around the room occasionally throwing them far away to distract it this muster in particular scared me so badly nothing ever compared to the absolute panic i felt when i would fall into the water and could hear the growling sounds of the slug approaching me aside from the monsters themselves being scary another thing that i think elevates this game to such a terrifying status is its use of the soundtrack the soundtrack of the upturn is such an interesting mix of both fun and funky tunes as well as genuinely tense and fast-paced music which sets the tone for whatever situation you're stuck in when an enemy appears it often plays this very fast and foreboding song which gives the player the sense of urgency to get out of there and when the player does get away it usually serves as a fun way to break the tension often becoming much more fun and bizarre sounding like when you get a phone call from my favorite character ick [Music] i think my favorite example of how this game is able to utilize its soundtrack comes in the form of our first encounter with shrimp a strange little dog-like entity which follows us throughout the game when we first encounter him his appearance is accompanied by this really creepy sounding music box music which isn't really heard throughout the rest of the game it ended up creeping me out so much that i kept checking back on the creature following me because i genuinely thought that something really bad was going to happen and then it didn't which just got me even more worried about what was to come in the future i see moments like this as being the shining example of how a good soundtrack can really elevate the experience a game gives its player especially when it comes to horror okay so moving on from horror i kind of want to just take the time to discuss some of the other things in this game i find super charming starting with your companion who speaks to you throughout the entire game ick from the moment this beautiful slimy weirdo first appears in the game i've absolutely adored him his design is super simplistic but there's something about it i find so appealing his black silhouette with glowing yellow eyes and a massive smile really does it for me and he was the first thing i saw which made me realize how much i was going to enjoy this game and that's not even mentioning how much i love all his dialogue everything that comes out of his mouth is genuinely hilarious and sometimes he can even act as your downfall if you pick the wrong dialogue options when being hunted by monsters or if it's just like one of those things i have nostalgia for that sucked i remember it being really bad but like over the hedge playstation 2 review there's a video game [Music] after playing the game ick ended up being one of my favorite characters from any of the indie games i've played in a while there's just a certain charm to him that i can not get over the other big thing i want to mention that i really enjoy in this game is its story the story of this game is a pretty simple one filled with a lot of silly moments however i think it does a good job at keeping the player invested in what's going on the story of the game mainly focuses on the character we play as and how he and ick ended up dying in the first place this already interesting story then becomes very mysterious when the previously mentioned monster shrimp is released from confinement and begins following us around the hotel seemingly bringing bad things with it it's not an overly complicated or serious storyline but it's one that fits this game perfectly and i really love it for that reason the upturn is an extremely over-the-top and goofy horror game which somehow manages to perfectly blend together both horror and comedy the game does an amazing job at expressing its own personality through its art gameplay soundtrack and writing to give us an experience that i've never seen before from any other game playing this game and it steals gave me a lot of hope for zekers as a developer as i'm able to see more of his personality and talent shine through with each game i play of his if this video has made you interested in this game at all i highly recommend you go and check it out on steam there's tons of stuff i didn't mention here that i want you all to experience for yourselves and i really want zekers to get the support he deserves for making such great games with all that said though i hope you enjoyed today's video i had a ton of fun making this one and i really sincerely hope you enjoyed watching it i hope to see you again in whatever my next project ends up being goodbye for now [Music] listen if
