welcome to GM Bien's comprehensive guide on how to corner and the skills you should be using there are quite a few things you think about in cornering I try and break it down do a couple of steps at a time the first really important thing is trying to look around the corner something that personally I don't find comes naturally I do it all the time and I'm trying to spot the exit the turn as early as possible can't always do that might be bushes and trees in the way I'm always looking next very important thing is trying to get your weight as low as possible so I drop in your outside foot and I should try and commit all that weight to that foot your center of gravity will be nice and low you're gonna find the most amount of grip possible you need to think about your weight distribution from front to the back of the bike you want to try and find that sweet spot with your weight in the middle so that both tires are weighted about equally so they'll start to drift at about at the same time start moving your weight one way or the other it's going to take weight off that opposite tire there fall that one's going to slip slightly earlier so try and find that spot somewhere in the middle so that both tires start to dress the same time there are a few bike setup things that can affect where your weight is naturally on the bike a big one for me is where my handlebars are let's say you had really high bars that's going to tip you slightly further back on the bike it's great for going downhill but on the flat it's going to mean your weight might be further back on the bike meaning that front wheels going to wash out so I play around a lot with spaces underneath my bars or tape changing different bars just so I try and get that sweet spot so there's enough weight on that front tire on the trails that I like to ride so that front tire doesn't slide out all the time a long stem can almost do the opposite you start bringing weight for which is great for climbing again on the descents your weight might be too far biased towards the front on a fast turn like this where it's quite flat it's a little bit loose I'll leave my hips where they are in that sweet spot and actually lower my chest slightly to bar to bias that front wheel a little bit so if anything my rear wheels going to slide first and give me a little bit of warning most crashes whilst corner and happen because your weight gets off the inside of the bike for some reason maybe you're turning your tire slip height your weight goes that way and down you go so a really good technique for trying to avoid that is actually trying to keep your weight slightly to the outside of the bike so rather than being totally in line with the bike next I'm talking about my hips I actually try and dip the bike over and keep my weight slightly to the outside it's a really stable place to be your weight is nearer the tires that's also a technique that I use to try and change the line of the turn if I want to go round tighter or the corner tightens up I'll dip the bike over further it wants to turn harder it's corner straightens up I'll pick the bike back up and away I go tires are going to have a massive effect on how much grip you have and there's two ends of scale really you'd have a really grippy tire we have a really fast rolling tire grippy tires like this are quite wide big aggressive knobs on there they're going to find loads of grip on the floor but they're not going to be the fastest rolling a thinner lower profile tire with harder rubber compound as well it's been much faster on the trail but will have much less grip in the turns find the most amount of grip possible in the corner do all your braking early and get off then when you start to turn therefore you're not asking your tires to grip two ways only in the directional corner it's very easy to lose grip in the turn if you grab the brakes mid corner and also I'll try and stand the bike up a little bit which can make you roll too wide coming off the bracing corners is great in theory but you can't always do that here we've got a really steep corner that if you come off the brakes here you never flying off downhill out of control so obviously that's not going to work here in this situation I'll be really careful to brake hard and early still as soon as I start turning in I'm going to come off the front brake let's try and get that front wheel gripping and I'm actually gonna stay on the back brake keep it dragging all the way through until I can dare myself to come off that bat brake and roll out like corner with some speed booms offer much more support of flat corners and therefore grip I think think about it ease is try and get up and into them and try and find the steepest part of the berm the most amount of grip if you've got a really big tall berm going up nice and high also gives you a bit of speed as you roll down and out of it one other thing to think about with burn is actually you might not want to drop your outside foot the whole way to the bottom of the stroke especially important if you're hitting that berm really hard and your DNA into it you almost want to go back to having your pedals level so you can control your weight a little bit so actually I tend to just dip a little bit and not go the whole way when I hit a berm really hard so all these cornering skills like getting your weight so foot down low seven gravity coming off the brakes are all really worth learning but actually you don't always need to use them you always need to get them dialed and then work backwards from there for example this corner here is really steep it's got a couple of steps in it and actually I don't want to commit all my weight to my outside foot or control my weight and my two feet a little bit better there are other things like that with corners like berms and flat turns we don't need to do everything it's going to see more videos on cornering you can click up there for how to ride switchbacks or click just down there for how to lean your bike over in corners really in-depth guide of how to practice that thing I've talked about a lot before click in the middle to subscribe
