goldberg bill goldberg the motorcycle collector from hell and tonight i feel like a really big kid in a really expensive candy store in vegas no less where they say what happens here stays here well there's a shortage of elephants it's the guy that gets it how the hell am i going to follow that you know when it comes to motorcycle engineering these guys think that just because it ain't broke doesn't mean you can't make it better that's progress before the show the producers asked our builders to vote for the guy they feel takes the science of engineering a custom motorcycle to a whole new level with these rule-breaking geniuses as the nominees these brainiacs are off the map with innovative engineering jesse rook the high performance rear brake caliper on a conventional motorcycle the rotor brake caliper and sprocket are externally mounted as individual components jesse streamlines the setup a hidden brake line runs through the frame rail the sprocket and rotor are combined into one unit a spreader [Applause] the monolith rear suspension these leaf springs come from a 40 ford instead of the normal two shocks the leaves will be inserted vertically under the seat by adding or subtracting leaves hank can adjust the suspension to perfection [Applause] mike pugliese the ultra clean friction drive a chain connects the friction drive to the transmission which spins two gear driven shafts one shaft runs a brake rotor under the seat the second shaft spins the drum this drum presses on the tire to make his bike move [Music] russ mitchell the monster trike custom differential russ created a rear axle that includes a one-of-a-kind custom differential setup to prevent the bike from tipping the diff allows the rear wheels to turn at different speeds offsetting the power of the motor and supporting the 36 inches of raw burning rubber [Music] matt hatch the drive sprocket rear brake caliper on most bikes the rear brake is mounted on the rear wheel for this bike matt has taken off the front drive sprocket and mounted a brake rotor and caliper on the inside this will stop the bike with the chain forget about it pure genius before we find out who gets it [Music] [Applause] wayne on all our hearts tonight is the absence of someone vital someone who set the biker standard for generations someone who could lift the room with his smile as much as he does right now with his spirit the great builder and sideshow wonder indian larry left us forever this year so to help celebrate his life take a look this is indian larry i like to live but i i could care less if i live or die you know if like wake up tomorrow or not it doesn't really matter i'm comfortable with that he was god of all things mechanical he was brooklyn's rebel mystic and philosopher he was a fearless stuntman loving husband and always the leader of the pack mostly though he was the essence of biker the motorcycle it's like a sacred object to me [Music] when i go out for a ride i'm exactly in a moment it's like meditation you know i'm in the flow flow came from salvaging a life riddled with tremendous difficulties when you get to like you know the absolute bottom there's nowhere else to go except up or die [Music] indian larry chose to go up battling past addiction homelessness and prison to become a legendary fixture in motorcycle culture roll with the mystery life's uncertain just be comfortable with that why fight it [Applause] this tattooed icon lived the american dream [Applause] a working-class hero with grease under his nails and international recognition as artist and performer i feel you should be doing exactly what you want to do in life how you want to do it when you want to do it otherwise you're wasting your life and you're wasting the talents that were given to you life is like a real precious short gift [Music] those who rode with him had a glimpse at that gift simply in the way indian larry immersed himself wholly in the experience that was his life [Music] i never question or doubt the journey it's like i really have trust that the next phase you know very zen like the next phase is going to transpire the way it's supposed to [Music] years and i've known him for a lot of years and uh you know you start to realize you barely scratch the surface of really you know knowing what the man was about you know and really really discovering that the depth of his character [Applause] and he found that when people would meet him even for just five minutes they would feel like they had known him for a lifetime though and he had that effect on a lot of people and it's something about his honesty i think and his just you know he would just put everything out in the open i think that kind of showed through on his bikes too and you know that's a lot about what the old school style is you know just honesty and purity and that's that's what he he meant to us you know so thank you very much [Applause] [Music] um i just wanted to say backbone and a floating neck finch transformed junkyard trash into a rolling metal sculpture so who's the biker blacksmith [Applause] okay this is another one of those categories where our steam group of experts chose our winner and the 2005 biker blacksmith award for extreme metal fabrication goes to [Music] what the heck bill you just about to hit me i'm goldberg dude what do you expect all right safety first and the 2005 biker blacksmith award for extreme metal fabrication goes to say it again so so it's all about the metal that crew uh my wife and um just a lot of hard work and i just love motorcycles and love what i do been doing it all my life and appreciate it no motorcycle event would be complete without bikes babes beer and burnouts so far we've got all the above except the burnout competition which we're not doing inside guys okay so cool off uh just watch this six builders one award biker smoke today we are going to have our burnout contest where all these guys with these big bikes these big motors they're going to burn some rubber so we'll see if we can pop some tires [Music] hey [Applause] i've never seen ireland do a burnout [Applause] ever that was so killer guys the competition was tough but according to our professional burnout committee the 2005 biker smoke award for burnout expertise goes to russell mitchell that was the nastiest the stinkiest the dirtiest thing i've ever seen russ how do you do it um more beer i guess basically russell mitchell folks hey all right nice effect with the smoke see something quickly uh it i i i haven't seen so many bikers in suits since traffic court [Applause] well you all clean up good um biker build-off is a show not about builders but about artists using their bare hands a torch and their wits these guys turn sheet metal into awesome sculptures but when you think of customs there's one man who stands above the rest arlen ness no one no one has done it better or longer there's not a builder in this room that who hasn't at one time or another looks to arlen ness for inspiration not only does he build the sleekest sexiest sculptures around he can make him do about 180 miles an hour he's the granddaddy of customs he's arlen ness for nearly 50 years one man has continued to blaze the custom motorcycle trail arlen ness always innovating never imitating arlen and his supreme creations brought the forbidden outlaw biker lifestyle to the mainstream he doesn't flaunt anything he uh he's a great role model i think arnold's probably one of the masters probably one of the godfathers of the industry he got his modest start in 1967 as a painter in his backyard garage winning his first bike show arlen's talents were immediately recognized so he left his day job and took a monumental chance with a wife two children and a dream he opened his first store where he began building the metal masterpieces he's famous for wildly imaginative customs of unparalleled quality but arlen had a radical vision for the future customizing and selling parts a decision that revolutionized the custom motorcycle industry this industry wouldn't exist without guys like ireland two to build it fuel in it's grown to this phenomenon that you know blows me away [Music] today with his son corey arlen is one of the largest parts manufacturers in the world but his impact extends beyond bikes and business he's an individual who love motorcycles he's made it his life and i think a lot of people respect him for it there isn't a builder alive that hasn't been touched by arlen's ever extended hand i had uh won the best paint at the easy rider show and almost was the first guy to get up and shake my hand it was really that was a compliment coming from all of this that was big he's a huge inspiration for me i mean he's like elvis man he's like the king he doesn't get any bigger than him behind the nest empire is a soft-spoken man of ideas integrity and loyalty a man who built a dynasty out of scrap metal in a dream always ahead of the curve always leading in quality and class arlen ness here he is the winner of the first ever biker soul award for lifetime achievement the king of customs himself ireland [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well most of you people know me no i'm not much of a speaker but i have to thank a few people tonight tom beers hugh king production um discovery channel
