hello and good morning once again from the lovely City of Newcastle upon Tyne today I'll be bringing you one of my most requested videos in recent times traveling aboard the tynanware Metro from here in Newcastle City Center to Sunderland which is the next largest city on the network so let's head underground and catch our train unlike many of our other Metro systems here in the UK say like the London Underground and the Glasgow Subway the town of Weir Metro is actually quite new relatively speaking anyway having opened in 1980 with much of the network being made up of old and disused railway lines nowadays the time and where Metro is made up of two lines and around 48 miles or 78 kilometers of track the network is notable for being one of the few places in the UK where speeds and distances are actually measured in kilometers as opposed to miles now the only other piece of rail infrastructure in the country that I can think of where this is the case is high speed one although be sure to let me know in the comments if you can think of any more anyway before heading down to the trains you will of course need a ticket while paper tickets are available I would honestly recommend that you order a pop pay-as-you-go card in advance well the card doesn't cost anything you will need to add five pounds of credit to it the pop card Works a bit like an oyster card does in London with the pop fares being significantly less than buying a paper ticket to use the card you just simply tap it on the yellow reader and walk on through all right just a quick one while we're heading down to the platform if you're fed up of all the ads and would like to watch my videos free of any interruptions then consider signing up to either my patreon or channel members Pages not only will you can add free access to my videos from just one pound per month but you'll also be helping to support my work you'll find the relevant links in the description below whatever today we'll be taking a green line train towards South Hilton as I mentioned earlier we'll be going as far as Sunderland today now the trains used on the tynemware Metro are still the original trains that first operated on the system when it opened in 1980. the current trains which are simply called tine and we're Metro cars were built by now defunct manufacturer Metro camel who also built many of the trains on the London Underground however these trains these days are now very numbered indeed with the new class 555 Metro units built by Stadler set to enter service later this year by the way if you're curious to see what the new trains might be like be sure to check out my recent merseyrail review as the class 777s that they operate are very similar to what the new trains are going to be like here as expected the trains have a rather classic albeit a bit utilitarian look to their Interiors with these trains having last been refurbished between 2010 and 2015. [Music] thank you writers we set off let's just take a look at where we'll be heading today [Music] station is Central our journey will initially see us crossing the town before heading out east from gateshead we'll then head out east as far as Seaburn before heading south across the river where and into Sunderland schedule travel time is 31 minutes as for the seats well there's not really much to say about them really other than that they are very very comfortable they're the sort of old seats that you just sink right into anyway we're now just pulling into our first stop Central Station you can change here for rail services to places as far north as Inverness in the Scottish Highlands and as far south as Penzance in Cornwall after leaving Central Station we emerge into daylight and cross the time off to the right you can see the Coast Mainline and off to the left you get some great views up the river towards the city a few moments later we arrive in the town of gateshead which is notable for being where you'll find the Angel of the North [Music] that's really cold [Music] after leaving Palo we split away from the yellow line which we have been running alongside up until this point [Music] before too long we find ourselves in Seaburn meaning we're now fast approaching the end of our journey today after seburn we go on to call at the stadium of light the station is named after the nearby Stadium of the same name with the 48 707-seater arena being home to Sunderland AFC as for the rest of the train well there isn't really much to it although you will find some wheelchair spaces towards either end of each two-car unit and I do think it's rather cool that you could see out of the front of the Train by the way you will usually find these units running in pairs but that's about it for the time and we're Metro I've left my ratings up on screen for you now but in short for a Metro System trains run fairly frequently and there really is everything you might need on board I just hope that the new trains can offer the same high level of service that these trains have been offering for many years but with that after crossing the river where we arrive into sunderland's rather dingy Mainline station you can change here for local Northern Services as well as both lner and or predominantly Grand Central Services to London King's cross that's all from me this week though next week we'll be heading over to the continent to take a Euro City service from Berlin in Germany to krakov in Poland and it's fair to say that this was a very mixed experience indeed be sure to subscribe and enable notifications so that you don't miss that one next Friday I do hope you enjoyed this video though if you did be sure to drop us a like and a comment if you didn't be sure to let me know what I can do to improve in the future a special thank you as always goes to my fantastic patrons and channel members you can see my sleeper and first class team members names on screen now with that though thanks a lot for watching and I'll see you all next Friday
