hey everybody how's it going so there is a post that's been circulating around as a post that I supposedly deleted because I wanted certain information to be hidden from people and I want to go over that post today because it's a question that many people are going to have and I'd like to be able to link to one video that goes over everything related to that post and that kind of explains how we do business so this came up in a thread about the postal service that was in response to a video that I did were a postal post office supervisor lost about 1800 dollars worth of packages and then hung up on us about it when we called him on now in this thread something completely unrelated came up I'm only going to be able to show you quotes from the individuals post because that person deleted all their posts unfortunately so let's just read some of them it says meanwhile nobody seems worried about the fact that he meaning me is perfectly happy to install non quality controls illegally manufactured or possibly stolen batteries into people's laptops presumably without telling the customer I said citation needed for lack of quality control and a definite citation needed for stolen now he deleted the follow-up post reset I well this is the post where you said that and I have a screenshot of it so I let me just go back to the screenshot though so this screenshot of the post that I had made said a lot of the times companies will try out ten or twenty different factories before going to a final one for production many will spend hundreds of thousands tooling them to make a part only to lose a bit or have a contract and early they have to watch Joyce's consider it a failed investment or produce that exact parts of the original specification and sell it to Americans who have no choice as the OEM won't sell them the part anyway for any amount of money so many people of these people are making jack shit wages as it is to pump out of the two hundred thirty millions MacBook keyboard or whatever if they want to make one and sell it to me I'll pay them something worth it they will whether Apple says they can or not given that they're being paid shit matters not to them and it mattered it doesn't matter much to me either this post caused intense controversy for several reasons a what I said not having complete context but B the fact that that post wasn't moved by a moderator so it looks like I deleted my post when I actually didn't so if I go over to that thread right now I can actually see my post but if I'm not logged in I cannot and I still have a delete button below it which I imagine is how I can tell that I never deleted my post even if I you know it doubted myself and thought I did it it says delete below my post which I wouldn't be there if I had already deleted if the reason this is particularly strange to me is because the person that was engaging with me was really aggravated about the fact that I had deleted my post and they were saying that I was a liar this that and the other it's bad that you deleted your post and then at the end of the day when they realized that I didn't delete my post but the moderator removed it they deleted all of their own posts so I can show you them so deleting post is bad so I'm gonna delete all of my posts funny wrong but anyway let's just continue with this so my response here to that person was let's go through that screenshot though since it matches what I see when I click that link people bring up a lack of quality control and I do think quality control is important but that comment isn't a citation to a lack of quality control in my comment it literally says produce the parts the original specification that's what important what is important to me and you can see here it says produce parts to original specification let's just go over what it is I am ok with and am NOT okay with when it comes to batteries as well I think you should know what it is that I am okay with selling what I'm not okay with selling what I think is morally okay in what I think is morally reprehensible so there's another post that I had made regarding batteries and let's read that here I said there are five types of batteries when it comes to legitimacy a original stuff pulls out of an actual machine I'll take it maybe it has five or ten cycles but I'll take it secondly original stuff made by the place that made it for the OEM fresh no cycles I'll take it see aftermarket stuff that's high quality that someone puts an Apple logo on wrong bullshit I frown upon it and I'll point it out at the expense of burning bridges in my own field several of which are gone and I'll get to that later d aftermarket stuff that's low quality that someone puts an Apple logo on these are trash and make the entire industry look bad it's a genuine problem and this is what most people who oppose independent repair and what they advocate for have a problem with and it is a legitimate grievance e aftermarket batteries with no fake logos on them that are high quality I'll take them and F aftermarket batteries of no fake logos on them that are garbage I won't take them so given the choice of what to buy I will usually take B original stuff made for the the same way it was made for the OEM with no cycles I'd I'll take that if there are less than 10 cycles I'll take a a battery pulled out of an actual Macbook that came from Apple and if I can't get that then I'll take e aftermarket batteries with no fake logos on them that are high quality after that I will just not buy or replace batteries so one thing at my business you may notice is that if you show up and you say let's say I have an a 30 98 MacBook from 2014 can you replace the battery I'll say yes if you say I have an 8 12 97 from 2010 can you replace the battery I will often say no the reason I'll say yes to the former but no to the latter is that for the former I can get a good battery source from either one of those three or as for the latter I can only buy batteries that are completely another trash that I can't warranty so I don't do now going back to this post many people say that I lied because I said I had no problem purchasing a battery from the same factory that makes it for Apple and that I could care less if Apple doesn't want them to produce that battery for repair shops after they no longer require that battery batteries from a B or e are fine with me and good for the industry good for consumers and I have no moral quandary with them batteries that are fakes where they put an Apple logo on something that was not made at all to original specifications or low quality or just even if it doesn't have a logo on it batteries that are garbage I think make everybody look bad and are morally and ethically repugnant and have no place in a proper repair business ideally I'd be getting my stuff from a place that Apple suggested buy from the sky would sooner fall I imagine than that ideal coming to fruition now this was not a lie it's a point I've been making on live streams on my channel and to inquire on customers over the phone for over five years people who were taken aback by the statements where people who do not watch what I produce so they have a conception in their head and when what I say differed they assumed I had been lying it's like saying somebody has been lying about their hair color when you find out they were into natural blonde even though their Instagram at five years of them is a brunette and then shows them saying look I dyed my hair blonde this is continuing from the post I said I think people don't recognize shades of gray within the situation on each side and is very very easy to ignore them when you see someone you hate or that Ryles you up talking on the screen it's difficult for repair shops to understand people's concerns from our Apple when it comes to genuine products while busy working against the company that wants to put them out of business it's also difficult for people from our Apple to do more than say aha gotcha in response to someone speaking poorly about a company that makes products they love when they anything that could be a gotcha moment even if it isn't real to be clear no Tim Cook doesn't message me on skype and say hey bro I heard you needed some parts what can I send you I don't get my parts from Tim Cook I can't get my parts from Tim Cook so just in case anybody hasn't been watching hasn't been paying attention or has a middle of sinning for the past seven years on YouTube or ten years that I've been in business Tim Cook does not sell me batteries I don't go I don't go to apple.com to buy my parts because I can't do that I go and do my best to find parts that are as good as humanly possible from the vendors that I work with there are many vendors that will message me and say do you want to buy X Y & Z and I'll say something like what controller do you use in that battery manager what type of see you know what do you use this that in the other and if they answer me and properly I'll know that they're selling me bullshit or I'll buy a sample and I'll see what they send me are you sending me something with an atmel controller is some piece of rubbish junk or are you selling me something with the original Texas controller if there is no one with the original Texas Instruments controller available is that because it's really old and no longer produced if you're selling me something that doesn't have the original controller are you still putting an Apple logo on it these are all questions that I have for my vendors and I have a system that I go through so that I'm constantly buying good batteries I don't want to buy the stuff that you can get on Amazon or Ebay as cheap as it gets because most of those are complete and utter rubbish and trash this is the part where people in independent repair should be able to reach over to the people an are slash Apple and understand where they're coming from they don't like the fact that when you go on eBay or Amazon 90% of the batteries that you're able to buy are rubbish and trash it's it's a point that I don't like as well because that means that it's more difficult for me to get batteries I'd much rather just be able to amazon prime over stuff that's really good so I don't have to deal with international vendors I don't have to deal with customs and I don't have to deal with all this rubbish scandal nonsense but I can't my site is set on it for something like at least seven years now that I am proud to not be Apple Authorized now when it comes to screen replacements I would advertise that I'm using often one of the same model numbers that went into your machine like if I if your machine had b15 for pw0 one I'm not gonna put in a b15 for pw0 two or if I hadn't helped p133 WP one you're gonna get an LP 1 3 3 WP 1 but I never used the word authorized and described any other parts that I and my website again this is why I find this so silly has said in large letters for almost 10 years proud to not be Apple Authorized here's why I'm happy to not be Apple Authorized I would have a little there was some revisions of my website that had a circle with an X through Apple Authorized it couldn't be more obvious to anybody who has been paying attention that I don't advertise using Apple Authorized parts I don't have it ties myself as Apple Authorized and I don't wish to ever be conflated with somebody that is authorized authorized to me is a stigma I don't see being authorized or certified in this particular industry as a badge of honor if anything I almost see it as a slur and it's not something I would ever want my business to be associated with for reasons that you can listen to in this video don't you don't have to listen to me you can simply listen to what the Apple Authorized and certified centers tell me when I'm pretending to be a customer calling in about repairs say to understand why it is that I would never ever wish to be conflated with a place that is authorized or certified another point that I had made over here I said I contend that if a factory is not authorized to make a battery that still does not make it illegal to make a battery I do draw a line when it is being made by an entirely different organization that then puts an Apple logo on the product proudly when the factory that made it is producing something else entirely and is something I have called out and criticized journalists for covering up which has burned bridges for me in the write to repair community as well as with said journalists but it is worth it to get to the truth here I am referring to a video that I did regarding the Henrik who's be case right soon after I got access to the court documents that was where I was able to see that Apple logo has appeared to be on a product that was not manufactured by Apple or manufactured to the same specifications and that is something that I had an issue with I did not have all the information prior to the case once I got the information I went over it and once I got that information I sent it to the journalist that had been covering that case on a regular basis and he just went radio silence somebody that was really interested in hearing from me really interested in writing about me that it included me and many of his articles the moment something was posted that didn't go with the narrative that he had been going for I just no longer exist and I did go over that and I did go you know politely kind of throw him under a bus there for not releasing information on the case that may change people's opinion of that case and may change people's opinion of the company Handel I am interested in getting to the truth and it's interesting I've had a lot less reporters reach out to me regarding write to repair issues ever since I made that video funny coincidence there I'm not gonna be spoon feeding them stuff that just suits whatever narrative they had already chosen prior to writing their article I am interested in discussing the truth let's get to the part that really bothered the Victorian sensibilities of a lot of people that said how dare you buy a battery that Apple does not want you to buy let's just go back to that point from that post where I said that if a factory that was making them for Apple is okay with making them for me and I'm willing to pay for them that I'm okay with that free market transaction and if they're getting paid jack-shit by Apple and that jack-shit that they get paid by Apple causes them to not have that sense of loyalty that when Apple requests exclusivity that they actually get it I'm okay with that and dare I say it Apple that's a you problem that's not a me problem that's a you problem you want exclusivity from a factory you don't pay that factory enough that you get the exclusivity that factory decides that they are willing after having paid for all the parts and everything that they need and all the tooling and all the chips and all the cells they're willing to then create a battery for me that's a you problem that's a you jealousy issue that's a you problem you don't want anybody else having access to any of these parts but you that's your jealousy it's on you to deal with it not me if you want to be a control freak that's a you problem if you want to act like a jealous ex that all then again that is a you problem not a me problem so this is something that I've talked about a lot when it comes to employees one of the things that really pisses me off in this business is when a repair shop owner doesn't pay their employees a living wage but then simultaneously gets pissed off at that employee for having a side business if you are a repair shop owner and you want to repay your employee seven to eight or nine dollars an hour I'm not even saying that I'm mad at you for it I'm not saying you shouldn't be able to do it however where I do draw the line is when that repair shop owner will pay their employee eight or nine bucks an hour but then get pissed off at that employee for having a Craigslist ad or an eBay ad saying that they will do repairs in their bedroom on the side where that employee does on their own time with their own parts and their own money is none of that repair shop owners fucking business and it really bothers me when a repair shop owner will expect exclus from their employee while not paying them enough to earn that exclusivity and then simultaneously get pissed off at the free market transactions that that employee then makes with other customers because they're just jealous or aggravated or and irritated that they're doing work for anybody else if you want that employee to be exclusive to you and he's not exclusive to you repair shop owner that's a you problem the same way that with Apple when they say we want this factory to only make a battery for us how dare you sell batteries to Luis so that he can fix devices that we don't want to fix that's a you problem Apple now with that employee I've had this happen at my own business there was a one person here that wanted to do repairs in his own time you wanted he was happy with the salary he was getting here because I gave him about a 30% raise over the other repair shop they had been working at prior to moving here but and he got had less hours but he also wanted to make you know just additional money on the side he wanted to get himself a sports car he had eBay ads up for everything and I never had the conversation with him because I honestly didn't care if he was exclusive or not to the business he did his work well while he was at work he would go home he would fix things for his own customers and every now and then he may buy apart from me but that was totally fine now there's another person here that does data recovery from me at this point in time his name is Steve he is amazing at doing data recovery and I've had the conversation with him do you do this for other businesses and he said no and I said do you believe that the compensation I give you is fair so that if another business wanting you to do data recovery you would say go through the store rather than I'll do it on my own time and he said yes I think the compensation is fair we had a talk when he started doing data recovery we had another talk when he got good at data recovery but we discussed what the split would be what the salary would be I wanted Steve's exclusivity so I had a conversation with him where I said is this worth it to you to get exclusivity do you believe you're being fairly compensated not just is this what you're gonna tolerate because you don't have a choice but do you believe you're being fairly compensated and he said yes and he hasn't been doing data recovery for all these other other places privately he hasn't set up his own lab or anything in his apartment because I pay him fairly now if I wasn't paying him fairly or if I was treating him in a manner where he wanted to do work outside of the business and I don't get to get pissed off at the customers that solicited him for data recovery I don't get to get pissed off at the customers that responded to his eggs Lister eBay ads I don't get to do that that's a meat problem not a customer problem and that's the way I see it here there's been many articles talking about the working conditions and many of these places it's not exactly a you know flying on sunshine now if they would like to get paid through us in addition to getting paid through the company I'm okay with that I am totally okay with that free market transaction and frankly my customers are as well now I do draw the line again if somebody is making some fake knockoff ass bullshit using crappy sells shitty Atmel or whatever controllers I figured if it's atmel atmega because I haven't eaten in a while but if you're using the shitty controllers rather than Texas Instruments ones if you're using garbage and then you're putting an Apple logo over there that is not covered over this is something that pisses me off and this is something that has snuck through on occasion I will when I does neat happen to sneak through on occasion I will bitch out the supplier that did it and I will never use them again it's something that when it comes up when it comes to whether batteries iPhone screens or anything else as I've said I will bring it up and I will call out the individuals responsible I will ask that they compensate the individual in full and I will call out the journalists that are so ideologically possessed that they refuse to publish the truth just because that truth makes Apple look good as you can see here but at the same time if I'm getting a product that is a good product that you genuinely cannot tell from the original that is made by the same factory I'm okay with that I have no problem with that and if the company that if Apple has a problem with that they should reach out to their factories and tell them you know what here we'll give you more or even better just cut all this crap out in the first place and sell and sell parts of the public so that we don't have to go through this dumpster diving mess in order to find parts that are good so that we can service our customers another question that often comes up is a why don't you just cover up the logos and everything so you don't have to deal with this and B why do you have to cover up logos at all why would you want to cover up the logo on something does that mean that you were importing something that was counterfeit that was not that uses all this junk cells and crap controllers and has an Apple logo on it these are all great questions and I'd like to answer these as well so when it comes to covering up logos firstly there are parts that we import that may actually be Apple originals or may have come out of an actual MacBook why would we then want to cover up the Apple logo if that is a genuine part well this is something I explains in this riposte as well someone's gonna read this here it says Mark Schaefer is a good friend of mine who works for iPad rehab he's told me that he's got to speak with customs people in Florida who've told him you could probably purchase an iPhone in the United States fly to China take it apart ship it back to yourself as parts and have a confiscated it's part of the reality of this business and must be taken into account when importing parts to do our job while I dislike it I actually understand why customs works this way consider this Customs has two ways they can do their job behind door number one customs can become fully educated on how to tell counterfeit from original parts does it use an Apple controller or its axis instruments controller on the BMS what type of chemical makeups are used on the oleophobic coating on the screen of the Arafa original versus the fakes and they could try and figure out what solution is that they should drip on the screen so that they can see if it bubbles up in a certain way to figure it out if its original or not or behind door number two the customs agent could look at a vendors list and cross-reference it with the imports if it has an Apple logo and isn't on the approved vendors list they assume it's counterfeit and toss it in the bin I'm taking a wild guess that door number two is how customs works door number one would absolutely cripple customs ability to do their job and while I dislike it I understand within the current system why it is system number two in that system number one is every customs agent going to be expected to become a complete expert on every single type of part or item there is in every single industry so that they can detective work on every import to figure out if it's the real deal or not hell no given the volume of packages processed if that were the case something I import this week would likely not make it into the country until 2024 the problem here though is that I could somebody can literally rip apart out of a macbook in china send it to me and depending on where it comes through in the u.s. it can get flagged as counterfeit just because it has the logo under the present system and this does change how i must deal with imports a lot of the spare parts i buy from flex cables Wi-Fi cards etc folder machines are poles from machines that were display models are not used and if i want a part two a seven year old machine this allows repair demand some dumpster diving as some may call that is involved this is where the Sharpie comes in why would I risk all of that it makes life easy for me the the customs agent the seller and everybody involved if they just put a sharpie over the logo I don't even care if it came out of a Macbook in China that was never turned on that was purchased at a damn Apple store I don't represent to the customer as an Apple Authorized or Apple part nor do I want to portray it to the customs agent as an Apple part it's not worth the headache my customers trust our reputation and they trust our work and they don't care one way or another about the logo the logo has no value to me and the headache involved in the part being represented as an Apple part far outweighs any benefit that could be had by falsely claiming the part is one with Tim Cook's blessing so in this case as I said you could buy an iPhone at the Apple Store fly to China take it apart to bits and pieces sell those parts to my back to myself and depending on where it comes in within the United States there's a good chance that that would actually get flagged as counterfeit because it's being sent to an unauthorized vendor and it has an Apple logo on it and this is part of the reality of this business so now other people have said well if you putting Apple sharpey's over the Apple logos why does it matter well apparently now that's not good enough they're gonna see well you meant to have the logo there they're going to assume that you meant to have the logo there because you wanted to misrepresent it to the customer they think that I'm actually sitting there with alcohol and rub rubbing off the Sharpie on like thousands of parts at once then they're going to confiscate it anyway so this is why people are using sharpies on them this is the reality of the business that we're in I don't like it but I understand why it is this reality at the moment and one of the things I do with my vendors now is it's just I don't even want to just know Sharpie no nothing just rip logos off of everything if they tell me but we took this heart we took this hard drive cable out of a MacBook or we took this thing out of an actual MacBook I don't care scratch the logo out if you have to because it's a liability to me and it's a liability that I don't want to deal with now one of the things the other things here that I think is worth going through is this obsession with the gotcha moment which is something that honestly I'm guilty of as well especially when it comes to politics especially in the device of modern age when it comes to politics either it's really really difficult to get the full history of an idea the full history of a conflict the full history of how a policy has affected people it's really easy to oversimplify things and I think that our brain really seeks to oversimplify things along tribal lines so which side am I on I'm on this side okay how can I discredit that side okay oh they said this Wow okay I'm going to ignore everything else that person ever said because I got my gotcha moment and it's something that I'm most certainly guilty of and I think many of the people watching this are guilty of as well it's far too time-consuming and too complicated to engage with what somebody is saying about some sort of complex issue that goes back five or ten or 50 years or an economic issue that requires reading thousands of pages of books to understand properly but it's really easy to say hmm but it's to skim through say oh they said this well I can discredit them based the fact that they said this therefore screw engaging with the entire idea and part of the reason that I think it is difficult to do that is that people believe that they're being insulted collectively so one of the things that I think is happening here and part of the reason I think this occurs is because I'm pretty bad at phrasing my ideas I'm not good at socialization or not a sociable person and not good at getting my thoughts out and you know in a proper way is people believe that if I say something that if I say something aggravates me about how Apple creates a product I say something aggravates me about Apple how Apple treats the end user or I say that something something Apple did aggravates me regarding how they deal with independent repair there are people that will say I like Apple he said something bad about something Happold did and in their lizard brain they think that I'm insulting them personally so now what they want to do is insult me personally now what I would like to do is improve the experience that people have when they purchase these products at the end of the day if I had everything that I wanted with that I believe would result in is a better experience for you the end user the product would be designed without as many design flaws if those design flaws came out the company would take accountability and responsibility for them rather than explaining why they're not really flaws until there's a class-action lawsuit and if you ever were in a situation where Apple didn't want to help you many other people would be able to help you as well even if you hated me and didn't want to send it to me somebody out there that does what I do that's less of an asshole about it would be somebody that you could go to and get better service now one of the things that my personal trainer actually pointed out when you read many of the the threads because he every now and then keeps up with stuff on Reddit and YouTube that I do he pointed out that typically people don't tend to engage with your arguments they go straight for the jugular in going off on your integrity so let's say if I were to go to this thread over here that has about the this is the one that shows up on Google for me Luis admits to using parts from a factory in China that wasn't authorized to manufacture the batteries so one thing that I find interesting is that rather than engage with the views or the arguments of the discussion what people will do when an idea is being engaged with they don't like is they'll immediately try to do an end run around it and try to figure out what your incentive is and then if they believe that your incentive isn't pure then they will just throw away the idea so is this an a good idea oh wait here is social justice for you oh yeah you can't have a good idea or do you have a good idea oh I think you're a white supremacist okay I'm gonna ignore everything that you said that may have a good point because I'm gonna just attach these labels to you and it's something that happens in politics on both sides of the aisle and every side of the aisle and it's something that I think our brains are just naturally trying to do if we're engaging with an idea that we don't like or an idea that makes us feel as if our tribe when you may not even be a part of a tribe to begin with has been attacked you then try to start attacking the the individual rather than the idea where you attack the integrity of the individual rather than engaging with the facts or anything that they've presented you and one thing that you may notice is in these videos I tried do my best to not lower myself to saying stuff like fig or any of that nonsensical horse crap that you find on 4chan I would just stick to facts when it came to the tarrant video I don't start shitting on people for their politics I simply say this is the government's website here's where they say that there's no tariffs here's where there actually is a tariff here's how it affects people in our industry here are the other companies that sell similar items so you can see what the prices are here is my argument in evidence as to why I don't think this encourages manufacturing in the u.s. I stick to that when it comes to the right to repair stuff in my 2015 planned obsolescence video I said here is a machine where when you run it it will tell you which sensor fails here's a machine or when you run that same test it will tell you a little error code that doesn't give you any info that when you google says go to an Apple store and I go why is that done that way I try to keep it to just straight-up facts rather than insulting specific individuals especially not insulting people just that chose to use the product and I try to keep it in that level but when it comes to this you'll read it immediately jumps to attacks on integrity or attacks on incentive so let's just view this some of this threat here it says it's a way to grab attention so it's only about the user attention who needs truth when you can monetize views and the funny part when somebody says I make around 300 thousand dollars a year from my YouTube channel that definitely requires a citation you know so there's there's a lot of comments and any almost any threat like this there are typically a lot of comments that rather than engage with what I say they immediately attack me as an individual or they attack my integrity because they don't have something to say about the argument so one of the things to look at if somebody says I'm simply doing this now because there's a lot of views to be had from it was what were the opinions that I had back when I had no viewership so let's say we go back to 2013 when I had about 800 or a thousand subscribers at the time where I had when usually about 10 percent of them would view a video so if I did a video again maybe 50 to 100 views what did I think the same thing when it came to parts so let's go over a video here this is from December of 2013 back when I had about a thousand people watching if even and this is back when I had virtually no YouTube audience very few people online knew I existed and I talked about how Apple and ice work together to create a monopoly against independent repair shops and I was discussing an article that had just recently come out the link unfortunately got taken away when I did this mass update of description so I have to find that again but anyway I did a video on that in 2013 back when there was virtually no money to be made in monetization or there's even earlier that year where I was talking about in this video about how Apple doesn't care about you in a colorful manner I can't believe the haircut oh god the belt why is it so high oh it's so cringe-worthy I wish I could delete that but anyway I can't for the greater good I will leave it up for everybody to make fun of but in that video I was talking about how Apple dealt with the police so long story short there was one individual that brought us a MacBook he seemed shady and when when he asked us to wipe and reload the machine we open it up the moment we turn it on and connected to Wi-Fi it starts taking our picture there's some siren that comes on I forget the name of the program that was on the machine it's been six years forgiving me there but it's some program that was very clearly obviously designed to identify the person that opened the laptop after it was reported stolen to get that information and then to upload that information after that happened in the laptop took a picture of our technician it was very obvious to us that this was a stolen machine at this point so we reported it to the police now the police wanted to get to the bottom of it because they had quite a few reports from owners of stolen Mac books and those people have provided the receipts and everything when they said their MacBook was stolen now so they had the in the police had the individual come back to our store to claim to pick the MacBook up the claimant was done and then the police came out and had a talk with him right after it happened apparently the individual that was that had brought us the MacBook had been involved in a theft ring in a nearby parking lot where many items were being taken out of people's cars and stolen from them so with the police then did at that point was they took the MacBook to the Apple store they showed the MacBook with this software saying it's really obvious based on the software this machine is running based on the fact that it was stolen so we would like to get this back to the individual and the stores and the Apple representatives essentially stonewalled them and so they finally found one person that gave the police the information as to who it belonged to and they were the police were then able to match that information up with a police report for his stolen MacBook and get the MacBook back to the person but the Apple made it really hard to get this MacBook back to the customer and this really pissed me off and I discussed it in this video that I did back when I had around 800 subscribers and nobody knew who I was or another example over here this was back in 2012 I think I had zero subscribers when I made this video its reseller ratings dot-com extortion scam how it works I was talking about the this threat I was reading on Google Groups that also affected me because I was looking into using reseller ratings calm where they will charge you this much and then once you become successful they will then charge you a new amount of money that was not in the contract that's usually exponentially more expensive for the exact same service and how they will actually delete all your reviews if you don't want to pay that going forward so if you were paying 30 but 50 bucks a month they can just say oh you're more successful now we're gonna charge you a thousand bucks a month and if you don't pay we're deleting all your older views and by the way with a few pieces syndicated with Google so you got to put up with it this was something that a company did that piss me off I had zero subscribers at the time this is genuine zero and I did a video on it I talked about the things that are relevant to me at the time I give my opinions on the things that are relevant at the time and I upload them I never expected to have an audience from any of this and I was doing this long before there was much to be made in terms of YouTube money now there are people that say I make $300,000 a year off at YouTube and I think that that's also something that is worth bringing up so I didn't actually turn on monetization until it on 2014 or 15 because it does take time to build up a YouTube channel it does take time to build up so if you look over here you'll actually get to see how much money I've made off of YouTube and the entire time that I've been on YouTube so I do consider that begins when I started making videos to be when I started even if that's not when I turn monetization on because you got to put time and effort into building up an audience so if we go back seven or eight years I think it was like seven or eight years ago that I was that I was making content for the channel let's see what I made over seven or eight years on YouTube BAM right there two hundred ninety nine thousand two hundred thirty four dollars and nine cents two hundred ninety nine thousand dollars two hundred ninety nine thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and nine cents over about seven or eight years of time on YouTube three hundred thousand a year really that's everything that's including donations that people have voluntarily given outside of a driven that's including YouTube bread and all that other stuff now one thing to keep in mind here 200 that comes out so let's see if we do that over like seven or eight years to nine nine two three four four oh nine divided by about seven years that comes out to forty two thousand seven hundred forty seven dollars a year before taxes if we put taxes in there that comes out to ya like about twenty nine thousand like thirty thousand bucks a year or so now thirty thousand dollars a year is actually not bad if you're living out in the sticks and you're making thirty thousand bucks a year that's that's pretty good you could live off a thirty thousand bucks a year and you know if you live someplace other than New York City one thing people don't realize is that in order to actually have time to do YouTube videos I have to have a business and I have to have a staff I have to have a business because all the videos I do all the videos I do instructing you on how to open these machines and what the new flow design flaws are and how those new design flaws occur I can only figure that out if I'm getting thirty to fifty of these machines in every single day so in order to do that I do need a staff and that staff that I have I pay good wages to for the most part and that cost me this much money so this is the amount of money that is adopted from my bank account every single week for payroll this is what my staff gets paid that amount of money is deducted from my bank account every single week thirty thousand dollars a year or forty thousand dollars a year before or after taxes may seem kind of like wow that's a lot of money but when you consider the fact that you have to run a business in order to actually do the videos that I do because my videos are about the business that I run I'm not saying I'm not happy with the fact that I made that money over the past seven eight years but to act as if like there's somebody just handing me thirty thousand dollars a month in cash no expenses that I just get to keep like no I mean here what people are doing is that what they're trying to do here is they're trying to say what he's saying is not true because he's making a bunch of money to say it and that argument kind of falls apart when you see that I was saying many of these things even back when there was no money involved to say them I say the stuff that I believe in and yes I'm happy that I was able to make that money but one of the ways I was able to make that money was by hiring other people and so that I could have the time to sit here for several years and learn board repair and get good at it rather than sit up in the front and deal with customers because at the beginning of my business even four or five years into my business after I had open the store I dealt with customers I replaced keyboards I replaced screens I made customer phone calls I sold people I reassembled computers all of that is stuff that I cannot do if I'm putting time into making YouTube videos and in order to do that stuff I need to hire somebody so that I have the time to do these videos while having the business run that needs to be running through the videos one thing you may notice around mid to late July is that I did not upload a lot of videos because I had a staff shortage and one of the things that happens when there's a staff shortage is I have to do those jobs therefore there's no time for videos I need to hire at least a few two people to do what I would usually do so that I have time to make those YouTube videos and in New York City the salaries of two or three people hell even one person is going to be higher than what I get paid from YouTube every year so the characterization that people are attempting to paint which is that I'm wall around on you know monopoly man moneybags as a result of saying F Apple is not exactly genuine may that money goes to a business account which then goes to many other people and those expenses far outweigh any of the YouTube revenue but B I've been saying most of the things that I've been saying now before there actually was YouTube revenue and see the other thing that many people don't point out is that for every one video that I do where I'm criticizing something having to do with Apple you can actually look in and see that there's another five or ten videos where I'm actually discussing something educational let's just take a look at the average video that I do here we have a video of my cat here is how to fix a board educational educational video how to fix a board a video of my cat educational video on how to fix a board educational video on how to fix a board Merry Christmas educational video how to fix a board how to fix a board had to fix a board oh my god a cat funny video of me fixing a board oh look it's a cat Best Buy Geek Squad liquid damage and I'm fixing a machine that Best Buy tried to fix it's educational educational educational cat video equipment commentary franchises did something dumb but at the end of the day equipment educational repair video educational repair video educational repair video educational repair video educational repair video how to repair video how to repair video cat video repair video ok video of me joking about Apple boxes me saying that Apple screwed up design of something so anti Apple video however admittedly anti Apple video with objective facts and evidence educational repair video down here let's wait for spectrum internet to load the next page hiring video educational repair video educational repair video data recovery video video and Motorola video thanking people with 700,000 subscribers humorous video on fire what's the educational video ok anti Apple video shooting on Apple video I turned 30 let's see over here we have anti Apple video hiring anti Amazon video anti Apple video repair video customs video video repair educational video educational video bike video anti Apple video anti Apple video educational video educational video educational video educational video educational video anti Apple video admittedly again with facts objective proof and evidence you get the idea here like there's these individuals that paint the content that I paint is saying like hey you're getting rich not getting rich be off of anti Apple content and if you just took maybe five or ten minutes to scroll through my actual content you would see that something like a ratio of one to ten or maybe even one to twenty of anti Apple video to educational video and now one of the if I was in doing YouTube solely for the you notes I could stack up millions why do I even make educational videos because if you look through this after this list over here ninety percent of the videos that I do will end up between 9,000 and 20,000 views yet those are the videos that I'm continuously doing on a regular basis and this is something that I've always wondered because there's a lot of people that say all he does are these videos and one of the things that does start to bug me after a while is that the videos that I do that are actually educational get virtually everything ah like this is a video that I uploaded today take this for instance so this is an educational video on identifying power cycling this video is 10,000 views this video will most likely max out around 15 or 20,000 views the reality is that people like drama they like seeing somebody complain about something that they perceive to be a social economic or societal issue more than they care about education and that's unfortunately not something that I can control I have over 1,000 videos in this channel most of them our videos are on either trying to advise new small business owners to not make the mistakes that I've made or their videos that are trying to educate people on how to perform a task in a given field a very small number as Apple would like to say in their warranty pages a very small percentage of these videos are actually videos or I complained about something Apple did and usually when I complain about something Apple did I'll bring up evidence arguments information rather than it just being a lol like ill will make the thing like what you would read on 4chan because I do i do look down on that type of intellectual laziness and that's the thing I I don't as a a YouTube content uploader I don't get to choose what people link to no do I get to choose what people actually watch and at the end of the day if somebody's saying you're only making videos for the hate then one would have to ask the question why is it that it's one out of every ten videos that's like that rather than nine out of ten of them if the videos that do get the most views are the videos where I'm sitting on Apple for doing something wrong why don't I do a video shooting on them every single day why are there less than 50 videos in this channel doing that rather than all thousand of them doing that but that goes against the argument that's being used to discredit any of the evidence facts or arguments that I bring up that the only reason that I exist or even do anything at all is so that I can get rich off of that anti Apple sentiment I would like to get rich off of fixing mac books I'd like to get rich off of you 8900 I'd like to get rich off of teaching other people in hell sometimes every now and then when I'm feeling a little naughty inside I like to get rich plowing off JTAG connectors but the evidence does not seem to suggest that the content here is solely gonna be anti apples solely so that I can get rich but that's the narrative that's pushed and the reason that narrative gets pushed is because there is an incentive to do it I don't like what that guy saying he makes me feel bad he said something mean about a company I like so let me tarnish his reputation and say mean things about him it's tribal it's collectivist and it's bull crap the same way that it's bullcrap that the guy advice doesn't actually post updates to his article or facts when they come out because he's tribally into the right to repair mindset and I don't like tribalism I don't like collectivism I like thinking so when you take the amount of money I get off of YouTube I'm infinitely thankful for the fact that that money was able to come in but when you add that to the fact that I have 12 employees that's what payroll costs I'm paying rent in Manhattan and paying Foreman's comp all this other all the different types of liability insurance this that and the other parts on top of it like the this is it's a drop in the bucket this is a fairly decent amount of money for an for a person that doesn't have to run a business and all that to make when you consider that that money goes to the business bank account and that's what comes out of the business bank account in a regular it's just when someone points to a number that is less than the amount of money that I pay a receptionist per year and says that this amount of money that is enough to entirely color and change my view points to where I can't create an argument on my own that's of course something that I'm going to push back against a little bit especially when that amount of money and more does actually have to go to at least one other technician and receptionist to be able to do the job that I used to be able to do myself that I can't do if I'm sitting here editing recording researching to to do things so that I can make YouTube content and all these education or repair videos in my opinion this is people going out of their way to try and find motivations as to why I'm doing something so that they have an excuse to not engage with an argument rather than actually engage with the argument being created and I find that personally I find it to be manipulative and I also find it to be a way that people are able to what's that have cognitive dissonance when it comes to what it is they're listening to and what it is they think I don't have to engage with that because he's getting paid a ton of money to do it but in the overall scheme of what it costs to run a business in Manhattan over seven years that is just not doing much when you consider that for the right to repair videos that I did I paid from my own hotel I paid from my flight I paid tens of thousands of dollars for all the additional gear that I need in order to actually do videos and everything it's like this is a way of people doing an end run around the thoughts ideas and arguments I present that are trying to blind you with rage for the fact that this person happens to be making money now YouTube as it is is this is just not the way that I make money for my business I make money by fixing things the large swathes of the money that I make are from actually fixing things if you take this down month by month there's a couple of spikes there when there's a news article about me or when the CBC news piece came out there was a spike there when I got the notification from Kilpatrick and Townsend that they wanted me to delete my videos there was a spike there but for the most part what I get off of YouTube this is not an amount that is that matters to me the amount that I get off of YouTube is like I could hire one additional person for it big whoop the number is not why I have the opinions that I do or why I say the things that I say if you go back on the wayback machine if you look at the blog post that were on my website as early as 2011 2012 2013 if you watch the videos I was doing in 2012 and 13 very little has changed from then when my content made jack-shit and now when my content is actually being viewed by large numbers of people above all the next thing that I think is important to get across here is that when it comes to a lot of these issues there's actually a lot of common ground that I have with the r / Appel people I don't like the fact that if I were to go to eBay or Amazon that on average the battery that I can buy is a complete piece of crap I don't like the fact that companies like Jack Telecom exist that are more than happy to use a fake logo on something that is not a did not come from the factory that made it for Apple that likely are not even going to change the way they do business after they get called out for it I don't like the fact that it's that bad repair shops exist that will do thing like reflow a graphic strip and then charge the customer money for it or put bad parts in and give the customer a 30 day warranty and I definitely don't like the fact that there's no shortage of franchises in this business that make repair as in a whole look bad because they don't even know the difference between a clock chip and a power IC it's just it's painful it hurts and I understand where they're coming from and I think it's important in any sort of discussion to understand where somebody else is coming from when it comes to these issues I think it's important to point out that our / Apple people do actually have a point that there are a lot of bad parts companies out there that Apple doesn't want people dealing with bad parts in their phones and they don't want people dealing with low-quality repairs lowering the value of their brand I can engage with them on these points and I can agree with them on many of those points however there's also areas where I can disagree with them on certain points where I can disagree and say it's not gonna kill it's not gonna kill anybody if I get access to an original battery it's not going to kill anybody if I get access to a schematic or a board view and hey every now and then I may actually have something that I'm aggravated that where I actually have a point because the when the things that a great me occur it hurts my ability to help the end user it hurts my ability to get data back from the end user when people that are our moderators on an Apple forum that the forum that's moderated by people making over $90,000 a year to work that work at Apple say things like well you're better off your money than taking it to somebody like Jess or Lewis for data recovery that's not only is it not helping us it's also hurting the end user that wants to get their data back there's a lot of things that I think I'm fair about being or I'm justified and being aggravated about and ultimately and for any of these types of discussions to work we need to be able to sit down and address each other as human beings but we also need to stop doing this thing that we do with politics where we immediately look for the somebody's incentive find a gotcha moment somewhere and use that to discredit every argument that they make because it feels good collectively to stay in the hive mind it's something that I have to practice and get better at because I'm not perfect at it at all but I'm not even good at it something I got to practice at and frankly it's something I think others have to practice that as well because as I've said in live streams if it ever came to a point where we could have an actual conversation with a company like Apple and we could sit down and hash things out I'm totally okay to do that I'm totally okay to do it to just do a blank slate on everything that has happened in the past have a seat say these are my concerns this is what I'm looking for listen to Apple like really listens to them when they say these are our concerns this is what we would need you to do so that we could feel good about giving you what it is you need or what it is that would help you service your customers I would be absolutely happy to sit down and have that talk hash things out like business people and like human beings because that's how things get better and I'm also happy to have these conversations where I try whenever these type of thing goes viral it pops up to try and engage with people as politely and kindly as I can explain my side of the story explain the truth as I believe it and explain the facts as I know them so that because I mean yeah and one of the things I said in this thread over here was you know I'm actually happy you're doing what you're supposed to be doing here I said I'm making another reply since you link to a comment discussing the Sharpie point I appreciate this you have concerns and are skeptical as you should be and are engaging in a manner to try to figure out the truth I wish more people did this I also just so happen to wish more people wouldn't delete every single one of their posts after criticizing me for supposedly deleting them when I realize they're wrong but as such is life but the thing is I think that it's important that people have these types of engagements with people that they disagree with and because that's how we're actually going to get to a point where everybody is happier and I do strongly believe that if independent repair people if certain companies were able to actually sit down with Apple or entities that represent Apple just really just say put all their stuff on the table say here's our concerns here's this honestly why we have our problems that we do that we'd be able to hash things out and at the end of the day that this would benefit the end user the end user that is in warranty or out of warranty the end user that wants to go to Apple to have something fixed or the end user that wants to go to a third party to have something fixed or the end user that just wants to buy a part to do it themselves at the end of the day if we put everything on the table truthfully and stop just like you know know a Nerf darts at each other trying to guess what our motivations or incentives are so that we can discredit each other we'd be able to have better conversations and we would be able to get better get to the truth and better get to a solution for everybody so that's what I think about this entire issue I'll include links in the description down below and as always I hope you learn something thank you very much for watching and I'll see you in the next one
