[Music] what's up you guys my name is Anna I am a junior at NYU and I just wanted to make a video kind of talking about my experiences at NYU and the truth about NYU I just want to start off by saying I love NYU I can't imagine going to any other school it definitely has its drawbacks which I really want to get into but I do love NYU and there is no T the main things I kind of want to touch on our social life dorms and food internship opportunities and the stress kind of that goes with it and also kind of the expenses outside of tuition and basically just living in the heart of New York City so let's go ahead and get on into it I'm gonna start with talking about social life because I think this is one big thing that kind of distinguishes NYU from other schools really just being in New York City kind of opens you to a lot of different opportunities in terms of social life which includes different people that you're really interacting with and also just kind of a different experience overall most of my high school friends are kind of going to house parties are in sororities obviously Greek life and house parties well I guess apartment parties definitely exists at NYU but I would say they're probably not as common compared to like other schools but more of the situation at NYU is going to like bars and clubs that can be a little bit more challenging just in the sense that when you do go out you're not necessarily partying with other NY students which gives you the opportunity to make friends with people from other schools there's a bunch of other universities in New York and also people outside of school so yeah but my first year I definitely like I was planning on I guess making friends with people in my classes or kids in my dorm I really noticed when I first got there that I don't know people just weren't as open and ready to kind of build friendships I don't know it was very interesting vibe especially just at my dorm I lived in Lipton Hall I would love to make a video all about the first-year dorms I think that would also be really helpful but yeah I lived in Lipton and my experience there was just very interesting I mean we had our hall meetings and and not a lot of people were really talkative we had like icebreakers at first and people just weren't as open obviously it's like stressful moving to New York going to college whatever but yeah I was just trying to be very inviting and I was not really receiving that back those vibes back um so in terms of my floor and my dorm you know doing programs and events they had all kinds of programs and events for you to meet people but it wasn't really common not a lot of people did it I just found that people weren't as open and then my dorm but also in some of the bigger university events during Welcome Week they do have like a full week of events before classes start after first year students move in where NYU really is just trying to get you kind of accustomed to living in New York and also meeting new people and that kind of stuff um the events are definitely fun I just didn't think it was really centered around meeting people I don't know like people would show up with maybe their roommate or like a friend they made in there like cohort or something and that's one thing so I started out in CAS and I actually which is the College of Arts and Sciences and I actually made a few friends in my cohort I think you guys are watching but there's still some of my closest friends and I'm actually not in CAS anymore I actually switched to Steinhardt and I'm in the media culture and communication program which I really love and I found that when I started taking those classes the program is a lot smaller and I had more in common with people in those classes so I definitely met some people through there and I also think that studying abroad is really helpful for kind of gaining closer friendships you're kind of put into a smaller group of people and we're use huge so the study abroad programs are a lot smaller I studied abroad in the fall of my sophomore year which is pretty common for NYU students so obviously this doesn't apply to like making friends your first year but just in general and wanted to add that so I made a lot of friends there and that was really nice yeah in terms of social life it's very different it was kind of hard for me definitely my first year so I kind of mentioned you know some people would be friends with their roommates but I do want to kind of touch on the roommate situation so at NYU your first year you can't choose your roommate before you go into your first year most of my friends from high school you know went on Facebook and we're posting about themselves in their group and choosing who they wanted to room with and NYU doesn't give you that option which I actually thought was kind of nice it takes a lot of pressure off of you to kind of try to find a best friend through social media I definitely didn't want to find my own roommate so I'm glad that this was the case but I know a lot of people that kind of didn't have a great roommate situation I didn't have the best roommate situation I also didn't have the worst roommate situation so I think it worked out for me all in all I don't talk to them anymore you don't have to be their best friend if things aren't great you do have the option of switching that can be a pain but it is still an option yeah so the way they choose your roommate you answer like a seven question questionnaire about kind of like when you go to bed how many people you want in the room and how clean you want to keep the room and they basically just pair you with someone kind of based on your answers and it's I know I had some friends in high school that had like 100 questions that they filled out and that's what paired them with their roommate but I don't know how effective the questionnaire is especially since it is so few questions but I don't know if more questions would make it any better you know you get what you get and sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't but NYU is definitely willing to kind of help you out if it's not a good situation for you so I guess just getting deeper into dorms so as I said I lived in Lipton and that's kind of known as like I guess the best first-year dorm so I got lucky with that I really loved my dorm having guests and just bringing people to your dorm can be a little bit strict which is actually beneficial I mean you want that safety in New York obviously the safety is a good thing and it being strict isn't a reason to not dorm I'm like I would definitely recommend if that's an option for you to definitely dorm your first year but yeah the already's are from my experience and from other people's experiences the RAS are pretty chill you can't obviously have like an entire party in your dorm but the auras are definitely more relaxed one thing I don't love the most about dorms is kind of how unfair the pricing can be I think my Nega situation sophomore year is a bit better of an example of this so I was in a six-person suite it was three rooms so two girls per room and me and my roommate got lucky so lucky our room was huge we had a beautiful view looking uptown but the girls in the two other rooms and the sad thing is they paid the same amount as us so their room was less than half the size of ours one didn't have a view of anything was facing the east side looking at a building and your first year you don't have the option of choosing exactly which room you want all you can do is rank the dorms so yes you could get Lipton and you could get an amazing dorm but I'm pretty sure I didn't know much about the layout of many of the rooms but you could be paying the same price as someone say like in a single and you're single could be a quarter of the size of their single so that aspect can be really frustrating and when you do live off campus you're kind of paying for exactly the square footage of your apartment and exactly what kind of amenities you have in your apartment so that's definitely something that I enjoy from living off campus um obviously your first year I would definitely recommend you live on campus in a dorm even though I didn't have an A+ experience with making friends in my dorm I do think being surrounded by students in your first year can kind of make you feel like you're actually going to college because sometimes at NYU I don't feel like I'm in college so in terms of food I know and when you switched to a different food provider this year but my first year we actually had this huge scandal where a bunch of storms ended up getting like a B or C health grading and this honestly this didn't stop me from going to those dining halls it wasn't I don't know if that's gross but I wasn't too worried about it I knew once that happened that NYU was going to take care of it so then when they did switch this year to the new food provider they actually did have another scandal again where some dining halls got bad health reports again I think B's and C's but besides that if that's something that concerns you well you have to have them you'll plan your first year anyway if you're living on campus so honestly it's still convenient having a meal plan and then the food really isn't terrible I don't know a lot about other colleges dining halls but I wouldn't say it's bad if anything it's probably upper tier in terms of quality of food there's a lot of options for vegan vegetarians and most of the time I've enjoyed my meals I don't have a meal plan anymore just because I don't think the meal plans are exactly the best in terms of pricing when you're surrounded by so many amazing restaurants and if you do have a kitchen and you have an option to cook like that is just so much better honestly I don't have a meal plan anymore but obviously I live in apartment I can always cook and yeah I feel like that's a better use of my money but in terms of internship opportunities New York is the place to be it's definitely so cool to have the opportunity to stay in New York during the summer and have an internship but also even to have an internship and do it for class credit during the semester that is absolutely amazing I think doing internships is one of the biggest ways to really kind of see what you want to do career-wise after you graduate so having those opportunities is absolutely amazing but it does add a very very very big level of stress last semester so my junior fall I felt like all of my friends had internships and I was so stressed out I felt like I was being so unproductive all the time I just didn't feel like my classes were enough and all I could do was apply apply apply so that I had something in the spring and I did end up getting an internship to do for credit in the spring and that was really great but the process of getting that was just incredibly stressful but at the same time I do know that it's helping me so much in terms of learning how to interview just getting used to the process for when I graduate so so then I also want to finish off by talking about kind of how expensive it can be to live in New York so obviously tuition and dorming and the meal plans are incredibly expensive in the first place but then on top of it there is also kind of the social pressure sometimes but also the temptation of living in New York to go out and spend a lot of money so I think you can definitely be cheap you know sticking to your meal plans trying to hang out with your friends at dining halls and then maybe limit going out or just being cost-effective when you do go out in terms of like pre-gaming but you can definitely do it in a cheaper way but I do know some people that spent their first year like spending so much money like going to clubs and buying tables at clubs going to restaurants all the time paying for nice meals of finding people that are on the same wavelength in terms of money all of my friends you know we're not going to go out to a club and buy a table we kind of want to have money after college and our parents aren't funding those things so yeah my first year I was really trying to save up and I'm glad I found some people that were also doing the same I wanted to study abroad and I know where I needed money to be able to travel while I was abroad it's definitely possible to live a less expensive lifestyle while at NYU but sometimes it can be hard and it really depends on kind of the people you're hanging around and what kind of pressure you're kind of experiencing from them so I hope that was helpful there's definitely good things and bad things it just depends on kind of what you're looking for and what you're hoping to gain in your college experience so but anyway thank you for watching and hopefully I'll see you [Music]
