[Music] trucks have never been more expensive and more complicated than they are today and so what we bring you here is the second generation Toyota Tundra that I think is probably one of the best used trucks out on the market and so today we bring you tfl's expert buyers guide but well I am not an expert on truck so I have brought one in from the tfl crew to tell you just why this is the best [Music] [Music] thank you Brandon you're too kind you're calling me the truck expert well I am the managing editor of tfl truck and like you said the second generation Toyota Tundra is one of the better used truck options so how about we do this we go over the options that used to be available in the 2007 through 2013 Toyota Tundra and also show you this truck which has 225 000 miles so many people would argue that this was Toyota's first real truck and it also had 31 different configurations including three different bed lengths three different cab configurations three different engines as well as two Transmissions but not only that this was their first ever truck that could tow for ten thousand pounds we don't do this a lot that tfl actually showing you guys very aged trucks with a lot of miles but this is exactly the case here so you can see the headlamps are worn the Chrome film here is peeling on the front and this truck by the way has spent a lot of its life in New Mexico and Colorado so it's kind of a western truck that's also why the paint on it is burned up but there's also a good thing about being in New Mexico and Colorado and Brandon will go over that in a second but underneath the HUD here we have the biggest engine this is really the introduction of iForce marketing name for Toyota and they're really going after the big three right the Ford F-series the GM Silverado trucks and and Sierra trucks and of course the Ram Dodge Ram trucks as well but this engine is quite good the 4.7 liter V8 was also under here and so was a 4 liter V6 and actually speaking of Towing Brandon mentioned that over 10 000 pounds was this truck capable of we have an eye Gauntlet video way back in the day where we actually put this engine to the test and it's six-speed automatic transmission to find out what it's really capable of oh my God the next five minutes I think so here we go second gear and so we can honestly say that in this pickup you cannot make the speed limit on the towing that's pretty close though it was close yeah ready three two one now what is the time eight minutes 13 seconds eight minutes 13 seconds is the official time for the tundra Towing the old girl Lincoln Continental up the icon so as I mentioned earlier this truck came in three different cab configurations the standard was just a two-door and then they also had the double cab which gave it a shorter door with the handle up top and that actually replaced the previous generation that had a suicide door and then of course you had this guy the crew Max which it's called the Crewmax because look at this thing it is like a limousine in the back you have so much space but the other thing I will say I know Andre is the truck expert but maybe he can correct me if I'm wrong in 2014 when they came out with the new version of the tundra was that not just a refresh I think the second generation actually went all the way until 2021. Brandon yes you are absolutely correct in 2014 Toyota well they refreshed the truck so they kept the chassis mostly the same they kept the engines a lot of them the same but they refreshed the exterior and redesigned the interior completely but that's not the truck we have so I want to focus us ourselves a little bit closer to 2007 through 2013. but speaking about Focus I love this I love off-roading and TRD off-road was their top dog off-road trim for this generation of the truck and this truck you see here actually is the most one of the most luxurious versions of the truck as well and we've done a video with one of these uh way back probably like 10 years ago so why don't we run a little bit of the video of this generation truck going off-road you know we talk about the basics of off-roading which is ground clearance and tires yeah and this certainly has the tires it certainly has the four low and four high four wheel drive system and it has enough uh ground clearance so it's a question of being Nimble and small and being able to get up these kind of relatively narrow roads dirt roads and that's where this falls down obviously it doesn't have that kind of Jeep like nimbleness but if you take it nice and slow a slow as necessary is as fast as possible or Nathan style smashes humanly possible before the teeth fall out I think we said that wrong I think it's uh as fast as possible as fast as necessary as fast as you want and as slow as the like you know as fast as as fast as possible here you mean you just fly over the line yeah you do it's actually nice and stable the faster you go yeah [Music] now this being the Crewmax means that we actually got the shortest bed which is only about five and a half feet but generally speaking the shorter the cab the longer the bed so if you get that double cap you can expect a six and a half foot bed and if you get the two-door you can generally expect that you have an eight foot bed back in 2008 actually reverse cameras won't regulate it so most Vehicles weren't required to have them so we have this little tiny aftermarket one which helps a little bit but the reason why I'm here with the hitch we already talked about Towing we haven't mentioned payload that much it started at about 2 000 pounds of Maximum payload for a two-wheel drive Tundra of this vintage but this particular one with all the luxury features it has and everything it's only about 1300 pounds but I want Brandon I want to bring this up because in 2012 in October of that year this generation Tundra with this powertrain towed the space shuttle across a neighborhood in Los Angeles or near Los Angeles that was a huge deal I spoke to one of the engineers Mike sweird who is now a chief engineer at Toyota who was there in person making sure everything went just right and he was telling me well Toyota is pretty conservative right they didn't quite want to do a huge stunt like this what if something went wrong well nothing did go wrong this truck pulled it but Mike told me that they did a lot of calculations and the problem of course wasn't really moving 300 000 pounds of space shuttle but it was actually stopping it so the dolly which the shuttle resided on actually had its own braking system which many people don't think about now this has a lot of TRD off-road goodiness but this exhaust right here is actually something that someone must have added later because it didn't come on the tundra and until later on down the road but this off-road package did include these 18-inch wheels as well as some Bilstein shocks not only that it had a rear sliding window so this also had fog lights as well as two tow hooks and then it had an engine skid plate as well as a fuel tank skid plate so out here in the west we do get a lot of clear coat peel because our sun is so intense but on the East Coast you guys have to deal with a lot of rust thankfully I would take that trade off any day having some clear coat peel over a nice solid frame I'm not sure if this is a common problem but this is what's happening on our Tundra so when I try to like close a window or lock something the switch is actually falling through so I need to remove this and fix it but I mean yeah it's been what 16 years and this truck is uh starting to show some age so now you have a really good overview of what the second generation Toyota Tundra is really about but I wanted to show you a couple more things about this particular one so this is where you put your elbow here as a driver that's pretty worn the driver's seat here is pretty much almost well needs to be replaced at least this bolster but actually the passenger seat fared a little bit better and the rear seat is almost brand new so maybe the rear seat wasn't used too frequently in this truck but this is enough talk Brandon what do you think should we take this for a little test drive and show them what a Tundra with 225 000 miles actually drive like all right dude so I think we need to run our mouths less and actually show this truck driving more sure absolutely yeah I mean we've driven this for a little bit now and I have to say this is really nice actually for 220 something Thousand Miles there's very few rattles very few squeaks the interior is clearly held up pretty well I mean minus a few things yeah you can't expect a truck this old this used to be perfect right right and the interior is a little bit dated I mean there are huge like portholes here for the gauges yeah so you probably don't know anything about what's going on I can I can see about a quarter of your speedometer and that's about it so that's okay you don't need to worry about it because I'm driving okay but but I really wanted to drive too I want to do an acceleration down this little uh road because I actually want to show like you said this truck has almost 225 000 miles just to 200 miles less than that it's getting decent economy but 16.3 shown right now and I saw something about 21 MPG wow on the highway run I did nice so yeah it's pretty sweet that's pretty impressive but how does it accelerate let's try that especially with this exhaust system right oh yes by the way we haven't you know replaced the air filter we haven't like changed the oil yet this is basically raw all right let's see it I'm curious do you want to turn your traction control off oh boy you're just going full bore oh that's 401 pound-feet of torque nice 381 horsepower and that's 60. wow that I wasn't counting but that seemed pretty quick no and also I I was a I was an idiot and I burned some rubber yeah these tires are pretty toast already I know but this was not the quickest way to launch this truck yeah that's true but what were the other engines I mean this 5.7 has great reputation but there's another V8 that has even better reputation yeah that's the 4.7 liter V8 which was actually carried over from the previous generation Tundra yep and that had about 276 horsepower and about 313 pound-feet of torque so you know you're you're losing a little bit of the performance aspect or a lot of them yeah you're losing some of the towing capacity but you're probably going to get you know a little better reliability although these are actually pretty darn bulletproof as well well yeah our friend Tim esterdam pick up track SUV talk found a story about a million mile Tundra several years ago we also covered that story and that was a 4-7 wow I mean that engine with some maintenance will go a lot a lot of miles well and the entry level engine of this was a 4 liter V6 so if you're seeing those really cheap Hunters out there chances are they're the 4 liter V6 and those really don't have a lot of power going on I mean we're talking 436 horsepower and 466 pound-feet of torque so no that doesn't sound I'm sorry 236 horsepower and 266. you said 436 I have like the V6 wouldn't it I misspoke but yes 236 horsepower 266 pound feet of torque so you know they're they're fine by the way if you are a fan of a manual transmission you're not going to find it in this truck because well this one is made it to a six-speed but if you really want a manual transmission Tundra you have to look in the first gen Tundra yeah not this one oh man you're not going balls to the wall with this thing yeah dude and actually for this truck this old with this many miles it's happy yeah it goes it really picks up and goes and I have to say the interior too doesn't feel that dated to me no look this is this Dash is nice yeah the dash is nice you have temperature control so it tells you uh what the temperature is outside as well as a clock a compass I mean there's an aftermarket radio so disregard that but you do have automatic climate control you did even get an AUX port in these if you have the standard radio and Touhou mode you know traction control disable oh and you can also control the level of your headlamps oh nice actually this one doesn't have that option but if you had the fancier option I think it came a little bit later in this run you could actually there's a little bit a little bit of a switch so if you're towing and you're squatting you could actually Point your headlamps down and not buying people nice it seems like Toyota really wanted to capture the American Truck Market when they came out with this and it's built in Texas yes absolutely yeah I think I think they succeeded because nowadays everybody coins the fact that the tundra is the most reliable one of the most desirable full-size pickup trucks out there and I think it all started with this generation right here well we talked about a lot of good things about this truck but there's one thing that's a little bit sketchy the four wheel drive selector on this truck has a mind of its own sometimes it will go into four-wheel drive really easily and then for low easily or sometimes it'll go into four high and would refuse to come out of four high until we I finesse sit and roll it back and forth a little bit so it does have maybe something not quite right after all these miles yes these Tangers are not known for their fuel efficiency so after burning rubber I'm at 16.1 MPG shown but like I said I did see about 21 MPG on a highway just gentle drive but I also want to say this generation of the tundra has a smallish 26 gallon fuel tank so if you need more range you should look at a later Tundra something around 2016 through 2021 model years where the larger tank the 38 gallon tank was available [Music] but dude we need to address the question we asked at the very top of this video is this one of the best used trucks well I think absolutely because you get the Toyota reliability and believe it or not these Tundras are pretty darn inexpensive in fact I'm seeing in a lot of cases these tend to trade for less than an equal generation equal mile Tacoma believe it or not so you can get the full-size truck that has towing capacity lots of leg room for pennies on the dollar and also that's V8 sound absolutely that's really important so this truck belongs to tfl Studios belongs to us we paid with just what ten thousand dollars at auction plus fees so on the used Market you might expect a truck well it fits in decent shape sure what go for like 11 12 what what would you yeah I would say a truck like this on the used Market is probably worth an 11 to 12 thousand dollars now if you get one that's nicer with lower miles you're probably going to pay quite a bit more than that on this but you could also equally get something that's a little bit rougher a little less well option for under ten thousand dollars so there's a pretty big range there all right if you've had enough now you can go to otfl.com for
