watch collection i recently sat down with hodinki's deputy editor nora taylor and editor cole pennington who came and visit us here at the atlanta office we're going to explore the hodenke capsule and weekend watches is usually the fun one where you're not thinking about having to get dressed up you're not thinking about just an everyday workhorse you're thinking about like what's something that is good for when i'm out on the go well i tend to do in my weekend activities so what's a weekend watch mean to you so more than anything else a weekend watch probably has to do the most for me like go to the widest variety of events places um in one day um so i want a watch that can i can walk out my door at 10 a.m and there we go pretty well just a little and then come home at two and the watch has like fit in everywhere that i've gone that doesn't mean that i'm beating it up necessarily it just means that i like want it to it's like a good date that you can take anywhere you know fair enough i'd say i'm a little flashier on the weekends so i want a little a little more fun i've been at home in the sweats all week working out yeah time though time to have some fun weekend nora and work day yeah one of them's a monster one of them it's very fun it's very fun so yeah i guess that's what a weekend watch means to me fair enough and cole i think we can watch is pretty personal to your weekends right so for me it's also a chance we say weekend things like it's a jeans and a t-shirt watch it's a weekend watch my opinion on the weekend watches it doesn't have to be the uh jeans in a t-shirt casual thing it could be whatever you want for that weekend right so fair enough if you're going to a black tie event that weekend it's a dress watch if you're going scuba diving it's a 2 000 meter water resistant iwc that you're dropping off the edge of a cruise ship accidentally or if you're just at home in sweats and you want to ball out by yourself it's a gold a solid gold rollie sometimes you're having a bad day and a weekend just look down you see a solid gold rolex on your wrist you're going yeah life could be worse a bad day on a weekend is better than a good day in an office during the week i'll tell you that with that in mind nora what's a weekend watch to you well my weekend watch is this solid gold roller wow because if you're gonna do it yeah lean on in it is just a stunningly beautiful watch i feel like if you're trying to call attention to what you're wearing and what you're doing and yourself you're gonna do it on the weekend my everyday watch is very small um and so the idea of just getting like a heavy large attention-getting watch that i actually think because it is solid gold i mean can go with almost anything it's like really good pair of hoops where you put it on you feel like you're feeling yourself it matches anything you want to wear and you know i could it's a rolex you know i can take it wherever i need to go i can run to target with it that would be a bit of a flex and go to brunch and then go to the theater and then go out like it is no matter the activity yeah yeah it is its flashiness makes it universal in a way [Laughter] it is what it is and there's no hiding it yeah it's gonna be really funny because i think we have exact opposite weekends like i am not doing anything particularly strenuous on my weekends so it's probably the uh the best time for me to wear a uh really solid gold expensive rollie i and it is the one as people have walked by it's the one everyone's looked at oh yeah it's the one that immediately gets everyone's attention it does not hide yeah but it also does not disappoint like when you expect a solid gold rolex you want it to feel like a solid gold rolex you don't want it to hide you won't you're there to say this is mine let it roar yeah um live highlighter real quick yeah were you surprised at how heavy it was when you first picked it up uh i was yeah yeah that's one of the things about solid gold watches especially when the bracelet is solid gold yeah you kind of pick it up and like oh oh man i almost almost dropped that was so heavy that's my physical activity for the weekend it's like wearing my rolex you can talk about history of watchmaking hierology you can talk about movement finishing you talk about everything that people come to watches for but i think the little kid in us so to speak all of us kind of want to wear gold rolex at some point it's the the gordon gecko i don't know it's just the thing that's just a little much and that's fun i i love it for what that is yeah unapologetically i think it suits you well more really but i will say it'll be hard to wear silver rings and jewelry with this would you engrave the case back and if you were to what would you put on it oh that is an excellent question um i would engrave it and i would you'd have to think about that yeah you have some time i have some time it'll be a little while to save up for this guy here yeah i mean my gut instinct is to just write something really stupid on it so that someone would in a couple of years if i like die and leave it to someone they're like why do i have a solid gold rolex that just says cheese like or put tribute to your favorite uh sandwich shop on the back or something but that's you have to kind of explain that though because no one's gonna no it's good uh we came across a solid gold daytona and on the back was an engraving for jimmy john's for some great reason there is a jimmy john's sandwich shop engraving on the back of a solid gold daytona and it deserves to be saved it deserves to be looking that's a weekend watch that's a weekend watch says i like my jimmy john's and i want to be fashionable that is fantastic and i look for that being seen on hodinki yeah it'll be for sure for my uh my weekend pick here i went with something very dissimilar to norris because it's true we do different things on the weekend right so when we're talking about the idea of a weekend watch it should suit what you do on the weekends and that's why i picked this the aqua timer but the acrocement from a generation when i was like in high school and college i remember walking by the boutiques and seeing this aqua timer with the yellow accents on display and thinking ah that's a pretty nice pretty nice dive watch and at the time kind of you know i was it was earlier on in my watch progression i really only associated iwc with pilot swatches so seeing their divers yeah i mean even two degree now still right but seeing their their attempts at a diver is like wow this is a nice piece and just attempt no okay their execution seeing their multiple executions and iterations on a dive watch and i would say that this is the best era to me uh simply for nostalgia that's personal but on a level of how does it serve you as a weekend watch well spill like a tank take a take a beating um yeah i like to you know wear the watches doing the things that they were intended for so and just for fun right do i actually die or time dives yes for fun but this is a good watch to do with to say built like a tank i think is an understatement because the thing that pops out to me is the 2000 meter water resistant it's far down that's never been that deep i don't think anyone has without a pressure suit yeah or even with i am unsure um because that is well below what you can scuba dive well that's it so something i always think about is when we see these ridiculous depth ratings i always think about what if i'm on a cruise ship or something and i drop my watch and it sinks 2000 feet because you know especially around here with the continental shelf and so forth you have to go quite a ways to get to 2000 feet so the only way the watch is going to get down there like i always think all right if i drop it it falls off at least it'll be running if i ever recover it at 2 000 feet you know just ticking away is it a cruise path exactly actually omega when they took watches down to the marianas trench a year or two ago they dropped one okay at the bottom and had to come back the next day for it and it was still running it was still taking so it left um it left a watch at the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean all night and it was still good the next day so sometimes you never know you might be able to recover it yeah well that's what i'm saying so it's that's nice to know that at 2 000 meters i can recover this watch is that a sapphire on the bezel uh yeah i think it is either an acrylic or sapphire on the bezel for sure it's actually i love how i mean you see so many domed watches i actually like how flat it is because it's big enough and thick enough where a dome would be a little excessive yeah so it actually just that little design feature is a nice consideration i really love it even though it's built like a tank i don't think it wears particularly big to be honest no i think that that's what makes it a good weekend watch it doesn't really get in the way also it doesn't iwc in general sort of stayed stoic designs but also tool watches so that's what i like it doesn't scream out for attention even though it does have yellow it's just a pop of color a pop of color you know that plays with the light exactly [Laughter] i did have that moment of it's heavier than i thought it was going to be so i was comparing contrasting which one's heavy gold and the goal is heavier but this one it doesn't feel too off the stream yeah it suits you okay it suits me sure but would would it suit you what would you alright put it this way if you strap this watch on on the weekend would you be inspired to not chill would you want to get out there and conquer new york city you are deeply underestimating my laziness it does inspire a certain spirit of adventure oh wow you'd be a great copywriter i like that it's heavy and thick and kind of yellow and rugged in a certain way um yeah but i i would be doing it a disservice with my lifestyle yeah what would it take for me to wear a watch like that yeah um for some reason i have dropped my gold rolex two thousand feet into the ocean see that won't work that won't work this will yeah but it would have my uh my cheese case back engraving so i would have to go with going on jimmy jams so mine kind of splits the difference on the two okay so i went probably the most ubiquitous watch in this collection the one that you see the most often and that is the omega seamaster 300m fantastic watch the new one which i i will say this is the first watch that had me not care about a submariner is the first watch where i went oh yeah i don't even need to look over there i love the ceramic uh bezel and dial combination that you don't see especially on the dial the applied indices give a dimension to it that you don't usually come across on this level of watch usually you come across that and things are geoshade and create different levels and but this gives a dimensionality to it that it's hard not to enjoy and i love the white because it just gives more to it and omega does something with this that uh is the reason i don't like modern rolex sports watches where i think omega improves over its main competition in rolex is rolex bezels on modern sports watches are engraved and it gives us i don't like the feel of it i don't like it's another spot for dirt and chipping and even that may not be a thing for most people i love the fact that they created a bezel at omega that was ceramic filled in with metal it's perfectly smooth and flat i love the look of it and that comes from the first rolex i you know tried on where the aluminum bezel four digit rolexes that were flat smooth and just felt clean and character yeah it was and it's still what i think of when i think of a classic sports watch because you mean it has to do with what was first for me what was the first thing and that usually leaves the impression so to me omega did it right and i think the 300m has slowly gone from 90s omega which was still here's browsing baby yeah and that was that's a great watch but it always feels like that was 90s omega and 90s omega is like the rest of the swiss watch industry it's getting out of the quartz crisis it's finding its footing again and i think every time they came out with a new 300m it was that much better and i think this is finally the one to me that's like okay i will buy that and never look at a submariner again and why i like it as a weekend watch is you can do anything with it i think it dresses up well if my weekend involves a family get-together or something where i want to be a little more presentable not quite suit but you know i'm wearing a blazer or something like that it works well and but more often than not if i'm going out in the weekend i like to go out on a boat i like to go swimming i like to go on a hike i want something that will take a little bit of a beating i want to go enjoy nature and master the sea master the sea and that's my favorite iteration of it i love it on rubber i'm probably a few people that's not a big fan of their straps but i think that's omega's weakness is their bracelets compared to their main competitor in rolex rolex mastered the bracelets in the 50s and has never looked back uh omega's still working on it and i think the current uh speedmaster bracelets are even are better and they're working on it and it's getting better but i love it on the rubber because it doesn't take itself too seriously it's easy to wear and it works so great with that color combination yeah i spent a long time with this watch i did a week on the wrist with the same exact model i i think this belongs gonna bond nato i love it on a bond name oh i will throw it on a flamingo [Laughter] and you'll go out on the boat and master the suit there you go um yeah a fantastic watch i mean there's a ton to say about it but to boil it down the watch is awesome and you touched on something which i think is very important this is the watch that can steal market share away from potential sub buyers like people who aren't necessarily super picky about watches they just want to relax someone goes oh buy a set well wow sorry we don't have one well next thing is this watch for half the price exactly and it's it's half the price but it's not half the watch it's not even close to half the watch yeah so well no it's more than half it's the whole it's a whole thing yeah i would i literally if you gave me the choice between one or the other independent of resale value independent of price if you just say here's a this watch and this watch i'm not going to tell you the brands that's the watch i would pick and i think that's something to be said yeah there's somebody said about that i i own the bond and i often ask myself all right would i that was a gift so i you know i'll keep forever but would i upgrade from the bond to this and i think the answer is probably yes it is that good it's a good pick mark that's a it's a good weekend you got lined up there yeah whatever it may be yeah nor are you trading in your rolex or that never very different rolex than omega though that's not the sports rolex this dial is incredible yeah if the dial was in a different case i would be like that's my watch that does come in a two-tone uh yeah i think it does actually all right yeah with the white dial though not the one i think it's the blue dial uh yeah they're blue or black black yeah yeah the white dial is just yes so fresh paste white obviously we're having three very different weekends all fun all fun all you know what works for us from solid gold rolex to a diver that you can drop in the ocean to a diver you can swim in the ocean with i wouldn't necessarily drop it in the ocean if it's shallow enough yeah but if if we both dropped our watches in the ocean this one would be able to be recovered deeper you know imagining you as the old woman at the end of titanic throwing the heart of the ocean but it's just you in that watch yeah well that's the thing like the next generation spending all day trying for years and years trying to find that legendary recovery mission yeah iwc is going to do a campaign in 100 years about recovering the lost yeah there's your marketing materials right there i hope you enjoyed the picks
