Third Ward right across from U of H and a little burger joint that's been here a long time cream burger with the big city booming around this burger joint cream burger has seen a lot of history at the corner of Elgin and Scott Street oh my goodness that chain where was the only thing on the corner Beverly Greenwood and her sister Sandra now sling out burgers at the stop that's been a family tradition since she was a little girl my mom dad opened it in 1961 when I first opened up business I was gonna beat myself crazy with hamburgers and french fries and shakes but that didn't happen because the business was both to make money not supply us you see Beverly and Sandra are just two of seven siblings that Willie and Verna Greene would welcome to the world and while owning a burger joint did help feed the family Verna had a bigger plan my mama when her real home for us and all the way she thought she was gonna get it was talking on business so she'd have paid fire house Willie worked several jobs to support his family while Verna kept up with Queen burger helping it rise to the top she was here from 10:30 to 12:00 midnight every I mean every day because when she first opened up she was working Monday through Sunday she opened up every day then later on was just started closing on Sundays the kids took over the burger business in 1974 and the closed on Sunday tradition didn't change but apparently the burgers have the burgers now are nothing like when my mama made him my mama used to put a lot of love in and we put a little of but she just put a lot of loving and I wish today that I could make me a hamburger and I could eat it right now I don't listen to her don't listen to her because you know everything changes you know but you do think different everybody does their own thing it's good but nothing like my mom and they have never tasted my mama's burger so they don't know what they missing they don't know what comparison my system brothers everybody makes it different nobody's gonna make it like my mom but she taught us you know just like anything else considering mama hasn't made a meal since 1974 and cream burgers reputation is still going strong sandra must be doing something right so what's the secret we keep it simple simple if we change one little thing change do you know customers will notice it I mean you'd be surprised give me the bride Sandra gets us started on a burger that's as big as H sound we got a cook a chili cheeseburger that's one of us it's kind of messy but it's one of our specialties everybody come alike we're gonna make it double kazoo yeah you're a big guy yeah so we're gonna make it double and everything there's a reason for that first up is the bread start off with the buns I like to get it a little crunchy no nobody nobody we don't do about it simple it is next up our two quarter-pound patties topped with the basics just simple like I said just sup just sound pepper that's all that's that's it that's it the reason cream burger doesn't need to fancy things up there grill our seasoning is in the grill it's already that fitting up it's 54 years this is the original group that's the original grill how close I know I know it's all it's all cool just to walk in there where she walks but other than that it's pretty so before you know it we're already working the buns you see how fresh that is we're gonna get that ready and we're gonna pick this with mustard and mayonnaise for it but I usually come over here put a little bit everything on it place some little lettuce and onions and we're gonna give you some tomatoes and some pickles and then we gotta put the cheese on the bottom so to meet with milky the final touch on this tasty burger chili just let it just run all over them look at that look at that normally we just wrap it up and you're on your own from now Thank You Beverly oh my gosh it's like pounds of food thank you ma'am will do let's take a look at what we got in our bag of goodies the chili cheeseburger a double mind you here at Creek burger there is chili everywhere I'll take a look at that everything you'd expect out of a double chili cheeseburger sloppy messy stuff falling out of it if this doesn't convince you to come over to the third ward nothing will we got big burgers you have to open your mouth why just wanted you don't get luck job for my burgers oh that is amazing Wow you know you can always come and get a nice meal hamburger fries or whatever that's one that's been always been all right Holly my parents ain't here but I started up here and now Mike you know in pants always generation it is in cinders it's diner fun so you know I let me let you in on a little secret this is only four dollars very reasonable prices very reasonable and you will get fooled this third walk most of the people that live in this area they don't income that's little less than average so we try to keep enough for them to get a hamburger frying a shake we don't try to make it so high price where they can't afford it that's the whole idea well the double cheeseburger at cream burger has got everything you crave it's got the chili the cheese the burger that tastes like yesteryear cooked on a seasoned grill from 1961 it doesn't get much better than this a double chili cheeseburger here at green burger in Houston well we're the stop on the Texas bucket list you don't come here you're missing out on some a good home cook soul home value good cooking food well you kick the bucket lucky thing come on down here man it's all like I promised me come see for yourself don't take anybody's word for it because I wouldn't not even mine

I used to stop by Cream and Sparkle on my way from UH back home. I wonder if they ever thought it was weird for a guy on a road bike to stop and order a burger and shake.
