[Music] welcome back to the troglytes katar show your daily dose of guitar information David Gilmour's almost complete collection went up for sale by Christie's this week and while all this information and photos are available on their website I found it really hard just to browse these photos because you had to click through 100 million different pages so what I did for the world is I compiled all this information in one area that is viewer friendly so you can see each and every one of the instruments that was recently for sale and I'm going to tell you the history of all 126 guitars now if you think I talk too slow you don't like my voice or what not I also have all these photos at my website I will leave a link in the description let's get to it 1966 Fender Stratocaster when David first joined Pink Floyd in January of 1968 the band bought him his first Stratocaster an instrument he always lusted after towards the end of Pink Floyd's 1970 US tour that particular white strat was stolen along with Gilmore's first black Stratocaster so the story behind this guitar is it was the replacement guitar for that one its original finish had been painted over after removing the pickup covers he used this in a France Festival in 1970 on August 8th Gilmour can be seen playing this one in the footage of both the soundcheck and full concert and it was recorded on the French television show pop do at some point in the 70s Gilmour personally stripped this guitar down to its natural wood finish at his home in London's old Brompton Road and after it was fitted with a Dawson stereophonic pickup in 1976 and kept around for studio use he liked the sound of the middle pickup on this one 1969 Martin d-35 this was David's primary studio acoustic guitar since 1971 and is often cited as his favorite guitar this particular d-35 stands out as the most significant acoustic guitar in this collection and some might say even the most important it was purchased in 1971 from a musician who was cooking his guitar on the street outside of the famed Manny's music on Manhattan's West 48th Street the served as his primary studio acoustic for both Pink Floyd and Gilmore solo recordings since late 1971 this was used on I wish you were here 1970 Martin five string banjo David got this banjo in the early 70s and kept it at home for private use he can be seen playing this in the 2015 BBC documentary David Gilmour wider horizons when asked about this he said he's always loved five string banjo x' he likes to learn a little bit of everything and when he picked this instrument up he didn't really have an idea of what to play and it forced him to get creative and not just go to the familiar patterns that he's done a thousand times before so this instrument inspired him to play differently 1969 dick night acoustic guitar British luthier dick Knight built this custom acoustic guitar - David Gilmour specifications in 1969 for home and studio use Gilmour mentioned this guitar in an interview with DJ bill min Caen for the US radio show King Biscuit flower hour in 1978 when he was asked whether he had any acoustic guitars in his collection Gilmour replied a couple of Martin's three or four ovations and a custom-made one by dick Knight according to Phil Taylor Knight also built Gilmour a double neck Stratocaster around the same time for normal and slide playing 1973 Gibson Les Paul this was purchased by Gilmour from a guitar dealer on Denmark Street in London's Tin Pan Alley during the mid 70s the instrument is one of a very small number of likely custom ordered guitars made using the existing Les Paul Custom platform but incorporating a highly figured all maple body and a control cavity routing on the top rather than the back this positioning of the cavity was only seen on Gibson's Les Paul recording model Gibson also used stereo circuitry on this specific instrument over the years Gilmour made many alterations to accommodate his changing requirements such as upgraded electronics and rewiring to accommodate full stereo perform it's 1973 Rickenbacker 12-string he acquired this guitar in the early 70s and kept it for studio use such as on the sessions at London's Abbey Road in 1975 for the wish you were here album 1974 jedson steel guitar when guitar technician Phil Taylor first began working with Pink Floyd in 1974 one of his first Jobs was to source two lap steel guitars for the band's British winter tour this was one of those and Gilmour recalls using it on the first track of one of these days when it's tuned to an open E minor chord 1970 Smith mellow bar this one was acquired from a london-based mellow bar collector in 1981 as an alternative to his lap steel guitars in an interview with Melody Makers Carl Dallas in February of 1981 Gilmour explained that the guitar would allow a pedal steel player to leap around like a rock and roller this was designed by Walter Smith whose original mission was to make a steel guitar easier to play it had ten strings six of them tuned to a major triad usually in an open G or E and the remaining four used for the relative minor 3rd 4th 6th 9th or flatted 7th 1977 zbs s10 Gilmour purchased this guitar from es e music and main stone Kent in 1979 and kept it for studio use only 1971 Martin D 1228 this was David Gilmour's primary studio 12 string acoustic guitar used to write and record wish you were here he initially purchased this from a friend in 1974 and has kept it over 40 years he said it wasn't his first 12 string but was definitely one of his favorites 1975 ovation 12 string pacemaker this guitar was one of a group of ovation acoustics purchased from ovation instruments in New Hartford Connecticut in September of 1976 this was prior to Pink Floyd's upcoming tour in support of their 1977 album animals later he kept this particular ovation for home use 1957 Gretsch silver jet the introduction and success of the fender Esquire in 1948 and Gibson's Les Paul in 1952 Fred Gretsch jr. realized the solid-body electric guitar was here to stay and release their own design in 1953 called the duo jet the body was modeled on the Les Paul shape with a single cutaway into single coil pickups unlike the now successful Telecaster in Les Paul duo jet was actually a semi solid body guitar owing to the large amount of wood routed out of the body cavities this made for a lighter guitar which lent a very different tonal quality to the instrument these attributes were attractive to players for both practical and aesthetic reasons and the guitar drew a loyal following since David admired these as a teenager he acquired this from a guitar shop on Denmark Street in London's Tin Pan Alley in 1976 to keep for studio use when asked why he liked these Gretchen so much he mentioned players like Duane Eddy and of course Chet Atkins 1952 fender Precision Bass Gilmore's longtime guitar technician Phil Taylor arranged the purchase of this electric bass from strings west Tulsa Oklahoma in 1977 it was purchased from his friend Willie Spears Eric Clapton's then guitar technician although david confirms that the guitar has seen a good deal of use in the studio over the years there are no records to identify specific recordings owing the fact that he generally records his bass parts alone in the studio control room 1940 Gretch sing chromatic 400 model 60 41 this was also purchased by Gilmore's guitar technician Phil Taylor on Denmark Street in London's Tin Pan Alley this was done in 1977 but was subsequently sold to David Gilmour in 1983 he liked it and kept it for home use box vee 251 in an attempt to capture the tonal quality of an electric organ vox developed the v2 51 guitar organ dick Denny a Vox engineer incorporated six organ tone circuits in the body cavity of a Vox solid body electric guitar and wired them through the frets by touching the metal string to the fret the circuit was completed and the tone triggered it was coupled with a remote power supply like to fulfill the required voltage the instrument could be run through any amplification system having always wanted to try a Vox guitar organ david gilmour acquired this example in england in 1978 and kept it for home and studio use ovation custom legend this was David Gilmour's high-strung acoustic he used it to write and record comfortably numb' he purchased it from ovation in October of 1976 and this has become one of David Gilmour's longest-serving instruments carried on every Pink Floyd and solo tour since 1977 used to write and record the original demo that became comfortably numb' 1959 Fender Jazzmaster in his pursuit to acquire the four key models in his fender electric guitar collection he purchased this jazz master in 1978 from guitar trader in Red Bank New Jersey and kept it for home in studio use 1962 Fender Jaguar similar story to the last one he purchased this Jaguar in March of 1978 from groom guitars in Nashville Tennessee Gilmour says that this instrument was actually used quite a lot in the studio over the years 1954 Fender Stratocaster serial number zero zero zero one this was the guitar David used to record Pink Floyd's hit single another brick in the wall part two Rex galleon is often credited with leo fenders evolution of the contour body and shape unique to the Fender Stratocaster at the time without any hard edges it allowed the instrument to fit comfortably against a musician's body a positive attribute for any performing guitarist it is traditionally believed that this Fender Stratocaster barring serial number one on the neck plate was one of a number of pre-production and custom appointed guitars produced by the fender electric instrument company in California between 1954 and 1955 they were custom presentation instruments and gifted by Leo fender to a select group of endorsing artists who had assisted Leo with the development of the strap Kaster in building the fender brand it is believed that this one was given to rex galleon in 1955 while a similarly appointed precision bass was gifted to his brother von galleon according to bond the Stratocaster left them and was traded to a Santa Maria music store known as Sousa music in 1966 the guitar came in possession of a young guitar student Richard Hoxie green who brought the instrument to the guitar workshop of seymour duncan in santa barbara california in the early to mid 70s for the purpose of having the instrument refinished and a different color refinishing guitars in this era was a common practice at the time and in the mid 70s there were few who recognized or appreciated the historical significance of the early works of Leo fender luckily Seymour Duncan was ahead of his time by recognizing the importance of such an early Stratocaster and chose to preserve the originality of number one giving an alternate Stratocaster body and neck to mr. green refinished in the requested color and duncan cap number 1 by 1977 the guitar had been sold to Phil Taylor the technician of David Gilmour within a year Taylor had resold the guitar to his employer David Gilmour and whose possession it has remained for all these years and he didn't necessarily want it for its collectability he wanted it for its sound fred stuart white number-one strat copy this instrument is one of two copies of the white Fender Stratocaster number one it was made by Fred Stewart in 2013 Fred spent 15 years working with fender as a senior master builder in the Custom Shop 1937 through 43 Rickenbacker lap steel these were introduced in 1932 followed by a guitar-shaped version made of bakelite called the model B in 1935 the Silver Hawaiian model 100ns introduced in 1937 was constructed of stamped sheet metal that was chrome-plated like all Rickenbacker steel guitars of this period they were fitted with their patented horseshoe magnet pickup these pickups are considered the finest ever produced for the electric Hawaiian guitar at this period instruments carried the German spelling of the company's name Rickenbacker mr Gilmore bought this guitar in the US and 1978 and kept it for studio use playing it frequently throughout the 80s Rickenbacker fire glow 365 David Gilmour purchased this experimental Rickenbacker fire glow from grooms guitars in June of 1978 the letter that comes with this explains the interesting history of this most unusual 365 fire glow in a quote from Rickenbacker CEO John Hall this guitar is fairly historic it was an experiment that he suggested back in the 60s it's one of a kind and very rare 1951 Thunder Esquire David purchased this from Seymour Duncan in Santa Barbara California in August of 1978 and kept it for home and studio use 1954 Fender Stratocaster production of this model was sporadic in the months of May June and July of 1954 it is often believed that the true first production run did not begin until October of that year the neck date of 554 and the pot code placing manufacturer in the 41st week of 1953 would suggest that this guitar was some of the earliest Stratocaster bodies and next to be completed by the fender shop in 1954 though the serial number applied to the neck plate rather than the tremolo cover might lead us to believe it was dispatched much later that year this was acquired in 1978 from a guitar shop in Denmark Street London's Tin Pan Alley David preserved this early Stratocaster for occasional studio use ovation preacher ovation solid body electric guitar the preacher employed a dual output jack that allowed the performer to plug into two separate amplifiers stereo or into both channels of a single amp david purchased this guitar directly from ovation instruments in September of 1978 after a previous order placed in April of 78 had been stolen in transit Gilmour has kept the guitar for studio use ovation twelve string this one was also purchased directly from ovation in June of 1978 and was kept for studio use the guitars electronics have been modified to better suit Gilmour style the Midas fretless bass guitar Gilmour was introduced to Toni's immitis through his friend George Harrison Gilmour Commission's immitis to build a half-size guitar for his daughter Alice later adding a fretless bass guitar to the custom order an accompanying letter from zum itís to Gilmore's guitar technician dated the 17th of May in 1978 reads tell Dave I remember him from George h's place the bass is now on the list and I'll do it soonest can't jump the queue with this as all other studio use 1963 fender six string electric bass David purchased this guitar in January of 1978 during his jamming sessions of the debut solo album at Pink Floyd's Britannia row studios Gilmour had this guitar strung to a special low tuning telling Melody Makers Carl Dallas in 1981 they were brought out sometime in the 50s but they weren't very popular because the strings were too close together and they rattled if you tried to play them like a bass guitar I always thought they were awful until someone suggested stringing them this way tuned up from E to a the following year Gilmour used this instrument during recording sessions for the band's 1979 narrative concept album the wall it was used to record the bass line on the track run like hell 1950 fender broadcaster was purchased from Frank Lucy dough's California guitar in December of 1979 during a brief interlude between completing final recording and mixing session for the 1979 of the wall Gilmour liked the guitars ghs boomer strings which were subsequently fitted to his fender stratocasters and telecasters ahead of the wall tour and remains a his string choice to this day gilmore kept this guitar for studio use 1952 Fender Telecaster this was purchased in spring of 1977 by Gilmore's longtime guitar technician during the North American leg of the Pink Floyd's in the flesh tour the guitar was subsequently sold to David Gilmour in 1983 and kept for studio use 1963 Gibson Everly Brothers J 180 this model was first introduced by Gibson in late 1962 and was produced specifically at the request of Phil and Don Everly the design was based on the J 200 but built around a slightly more diminutive body outline measuring six and a quarter inches in width and a scale length of 24 and 3/4 with its double faux tortoiseshell pickguard all black finish and star pearl inlays on the fingerboard and headstock it presented a dramatic and graphic outline on stage for artists this instrument excelled tonally as a rhythm guitar and was comfortable to play Gilmour admired the Everly Brothers from a young age so he purchased this guitar on the 26th of March in 1979 from George groom he recalls using the guitar during the 1979 Pink Floyd album the wall although it's unknown whether it made the cut to the final record however in an interview in 1983 he said it was one of his preferred acoustics 1955 Gibson Les Paul this was the all-gold Les Paul used to record the Pink Floyd hit another brick in the wall part two this model was first introduced in 1952 and lasted until 1957 but normally there would only be the gold color on top by special order there was an all gold finish available encapsulating the entire guitar this 55 all gold was purchased from Dave DeForest a guitar trader in New Jersey in 1978 while working on this guitar in the control cavity there was a gum wrapper inscribed with an address that read David I have been your greatest fan sent Saucerful I this guitar up wolf Larson I'd love to hear from you and meet you in the u.s. 1959 Gibson Les Paul Custom David Gilmore purchased this guitar in December of 1979 from frank lucido california guitar during a brief interlude between Firebird this one was purchased from groom guitars in June of 1980 it was kept for studio use 19:58 Gretsch white falcon this was Gretchen's most visually impressive and expensive guitar produced during the 1950's it was built on the outline of a 17 inch arch top and it was a 2 and 3/4 inch deep single cutaway electric guitar it featured a spruce top with maple back and sides with a snow-white produced from 55 to 59 this was purchased from the guitar trader store in November of 1980 and kept for studio use Gilmour recalls in the early 60s walking past a guitar shop called Sound City that had one of these in their window for years guitarists would walk by it Google and Google over it but it was over 600 pounds when a new Stratocaster at the time was around 170 it sat for ages but he always loved that White Falcon 1958 Gretsch white penguin following the release of the white falcon Gretsch decided to target the establish solid-body electric market by producing a solid body companion to the Falcon as they had done with the 6120 Chet Atkins it shared all the gold-plated appointments and snow-white finish but had a body built around the duo jets three and a half inch wide template some say the white penguins are one of the rarest American vintage guitars to exist while the exact number is not known it is estimated to be at the very most of 50 guitars in the gibson world it is comparable to a 58 Gibson Carina Flying V or Explorer or a pre-war martin d 45 as david had coveted the Gretsch white penguin for some time he jumped at the chance when Phil Taylor his guitar technician again received a tip-off from a friend and guitar maker Grover Jackson Jackson led Taylor to the Georgia bass guitar dealer Tut Campbell who managed to track one down the white penguin was purchased for Dave Gilmore's collection in July of 1980 and kept for home in studio use Gilmour remembers when he first heard that there was a little brother to the white falcon and he set around to find one but he's played this one a lot and it is a lovely lovely thing 1976 ovation nylon string guitar this was another one from the group of ovation instruments purchased directly from them in September of 1976 for Pink Floyd's upcoming tour in support of the animals album this one wasn't actually used until the to refer the wall throughout that particular tour David played this spare for Roger Waters primary studio and stage ovation from January to July of 1977 in support of the animals album at this point in time David and Roger both relied on ovations for touring due to their built-in electronics and sturdiness Gilmour joked that he liked them because they're robust and his daughter can kick them around 1982 Charvel fretless bass this was custom made to Gilmour specs by Grover Jackson of charvel guitars made in 1982 this guitar instantly became Gilmore's preferred fretless bass for studio use this was used on occasions such as on the turning away for the 1987 Pink Floyd album a momentary lapse of reason and high hopes pulls apart and coming back to life for the band's 1994 album the Division Bell 1983 Giffen electric guitar in October of 1983 David commissioned British luthier Roger Giffen to build a copy of an electric guitar he had on loan from musician Andy Roberts Roberts had recently acquired the guitar from John Pierce who had worked as a designer for Martin in the 1970s in researching the guitar roberts discovered that the instrument had been designed by John Huber at the Martin workshops in the early 1970s as a travel guitar for his personal use and proving successful he had subsequently made a handful of others for associates at Martin Gilmour wrote and record the song Cruz for his 1984 solo album about-face and ease Martin so Gilmour decided that a copy would be required for the upcoming solo ture 1950 fender broadcaster was purchased by his guitar technician again at Frank Lucy dough's California guitar just like the others David Gilmour bought it from him in 1983 and was kept for studio use 1957 Fender Stratocaster the ex Homer Haynes guitar according to George grew this guitar was a custom production instrument made for country and jazz guitarist Henry D Homer Haynes it is unknown whether this Stratocaster in a custom blue color bearing the serial number 20 71 was a purchase by Haynes or a gift from fender a brand that he endorsed following Haines's death it found its way to frank lucido who included it in his Stratocaster exhibition where it received a Best in Show Blue Ribbon award in September of 1979 Lucy doe sold it to Phil Taylor and then like everything else David bought it from him in 1983 Gilmour famously used this in a photo shoot for his 1984 solo album about face understanding the rarity and exceptional condition of this guitar he has decided to preserve the instruments originality 1984 fender Charvel Stratocaster elite David was invited to the Fender UK warehouse to try fenders new this technique is found in both traditional lute making Neopolitan mandolin construction and the arabic Hiscox were called first being contacted by David Gilmour in 1983 when the guitar was commissioned the instrument was designed around Gilmour specifications and modeled partially on an ovation acoustic that he was performing on at the time an accompanying letter from Hiscox with this this sometimes if you strip off the Antiqua paint finish on them you will find wild wood underneath 2007 Fender Stratocaster this guitar is the third of five prototypes that were produced by fender world David Gilmour's black Fender Stratocaster stands out as one of only a handful guitars that have taken on a life of their and gained a level of Fame that nearly matches its owner despite humble beginnings of an off-the-shelf standard model Stratocaster the extensively modified guitar has become a legend in its own right this one was purchased new at the iconic New York guitar store mani's and he acquired it to replace a black Stratocaster with a rosewood neck that he had purchased six weeks earlier that got stolen although most of the stolen equipment was recovered the first black Stratton was never seen again over the years this instrument was fitted with various pickups switches inputs pick guards tail pieces and tuners and has undergone no less than six different neck changes all these alterations were performed in an endeavor to achieve the dynamics and tonal quality and playability required by Gilmour at the time one of his first alterations was to put an edge mount at XLR socket in 1972 he didn't end up liking that very much so he made some paste out of sawdust and wood glue and filled it back in again his repair work is still very much visible hung the guitar today and that's it all 126 guitars and their history all in a single video I've spent so much time with this collection I could probably recite this all by heart but I hope you guys enjoyed
