you are set a genuine Jim thank you for clicking on my video I'm Brooke McKenna but today's case is they solved abductions of Michael J Devlin now not often do you get to tell stories of true crime that have a happy ending and although these victims will rescue the strength that they showed throughout the years was astounding and that's why I believe that their stories still deserve to be told by the way I post so much content like this and these are the kind of cases that I love doing these solved ones the ones with a good outcome but I do a variety of different cases on this channel and if it's something you enjoy I would love if you would subscribe and also if you want to make a girl happy all you have to do is thumbs up this video leave a nice comment down below and that's all I ask of you so now let's get back to this story so it was 2002 in Missouri and Shawn Hornbeck was an 11 year old boy who lived in rich woods now he was adventurous he was curious and he loved video games he was the average little boy and on Sunday October 6th of 2002 Shawn would decide to ride his bike over to his friends house named Patrick Reeves who lived only about a half a mile away from Shawn and he had to go on highway 1 a to get to his house however he would never make it to his friends house and he would never return home and he told his mother that he would be home by 5:00 p.m. and he always was his mother knew instantly that something was wrong because it was dark outside by 5:00 p.m. and Shawn was terrified of the dark he refused to the outside especially a lone one of his dark and he would have been home or he at least would have called to let them know what was happening and he did not and so his mother ended up calling him this friend named Patrick and said is Shawn still at your house and Patrick said I don't know what you're talking about he hasn't been here today and calling around he had actually been spotted at several different places in the community playing with different kids playing basketball going to stores but he didn't necessarily go where he told his mother he would for days his family searched putting up posters everywhere and volunteers and officers scoured the woods and the highways and they even brought in canines who traced his scent to highway 1a however it just kind of fell off from there and they couldn't go any farther with it was like he just vanished from the actual highway itself these missing posters were saying that Shawn had last been seen wearing a bright orange astros little league jersey but no amount of papers that they were handing out or finding him now according to the hostage podcast Shawn was actually wanting to be a computer programmer when he grew up because his stepfather Craig was one and he wanted to do anything that could make him more like Craig he absolutely loved him and in fact the whole family was working on the process of Craig being able to adopt Shawn to legally make him his son and this process obviously had to be halted at this point since Shawn was missing so it was extremely devastating for the entire family and just the fact that Craig was Shawn's stepfather didn't mean anything to him he felt as though it was his full-blooded son a tip came in of Shawn's whereabout saying that that day Shana went missing and there was a group of people high on meth who was driving a red car down that highway when they hit a boy and threw him in the trunk and then took him out in the middle of nowhere shot him and threw him in a well and the police didn't think they'd be able to find anything on this however they did they found the red car that was kind of abandoned and the back bumper was actually messed up and they traced his car back to a woman who then said she had no idea what they were talking about she hit a dog not a boy eventually years later his parents Pam creig ackers they started a Shawn Hornbeck foundation that ran the Shawn Hornbeck search-and-rescue team where they hopes to acquire more volunteers because of course throughout time less and less people believed to be found and so they didn't show up to help out and so this was just to really keep the awareness about the case going and from all this coverage that they were doing they actually got a psychic to call in and say that she knew what had happened to Shawn that it was a motorcycle accident and that he had been hit by one and it was buried and I wouldn't Ravine about a mile away from where he had last been seen strangely enough they found that there had been a motorcycle accident that night however it was found that it had nothing to do with Shawn it was just the motorcycle accident itself nothing to do with a boy and then America's Most Wanted actually posted Shawn's picture up on their website which of course grew even more traffic to his case and eventually a two hundred thousand dollar reward was posted for information about Shawn's whereabouts and then the parents would go on the Montel Williams Show and talk to the psychic named Sylvia Browne who unfortunately told the parents that Shawn was deceased and she was very wrong but the parents would have to wait years to realize this and to know that their son was alive and he was so incredibly strong you see it would be four years later and another little boy would be abducted it was around fifty miles away from the first abduction were the first disappearance and it was in a place called Buford where a 13 year old boy named Ben Ownby would be taken it was January 8th of 2007 and Ben looked a lot like how Shawn had looked when he disappeared he was only two years older than him then went to school that day and he's off the bus and then he disappeared he never came home and his parents immediately called the police because it was super unlike him to not come home I mean some of these kids would say oh it's unlike them but it was completely out of character he was the type to always go by the book minute by minute he would be where he said he would be and he wasn't luckily enough there would actually be a witness to this abduction it was a 15 year old boy named Michael Holtz who had actually gotten off the same bus as Ben and it went to his car he took this bus to his car where he would then drive home and he had got into this car and he hadn't left yet he was just kind of sitting there when he noticed a truck pull up to Ben and the next thing he knew this truck was speeding away it was a 1991 white Nissan truck and amazingly enough Mitchell not Michael oh sorry would know a ton about cars and be able to tell them so much that his typical witness wouldn't really have noticed he said the truck had rust on the fenders and the trailer hitch also didn't have a ball on it now he could even say what kind of tire marks that it left the tread that it left before the police got there you could explain this to them the police thought this was very odd that he knew so much about it and we're actually looking at him at first is having something to do with it they put him under polygraph tests and he passed and he was strictly just a witness a police then issued an APB on this truck and many in his community started coming forward saying that they had seen this truck in the area over the last about month and this was the type of community that was very small they all knew each other they would notice a strange truck that they had never seen before that they didn't know who it belonged to and many people were saying that they had seen it in the area so this led people to believe that this person who abducted Ben had been watching him for quite a long time now not only were these posters and this APB issued for just in this p4 area but all over the state and one would land in the right hands a man named Mike who worked at Emo's pizza and Kirkwood and he recognized this truck because it was one that his coworker drove to work every single day and yet strangely enough this co-worker had not come to work the last few days he'd actually called n Mike knew this was suspicious and knew he needed to tell the police what he knew now at the same time that his co-worker was figuring out what all had happened and that possibly his own coworker was an abductor the officers were actually honing in on where this man lived where this abductor resided and that was because they had gone to his apartment complex in Kirkwood and these officers were going for a completely separate arrest warrant when they noticed this truck in the parking lot and they realized that it looked a lot like this truck that everybody was looking for and so they started walking around asking people who the truck belonged to and that was when this man would come out of his apartment to throw his trash they began to ask him questions and he was kind of hesitant unlike everybody else and he wouldn't really answer any other questions and that is when he would hurry back into his own apartment saying that he had to go and would not really talk to them and they thought this this was very suspicious and they watched as he would get in that very truck and drive all the way to emos pizza now these officers would watch him for two days and then by this point they had called the FBI to help them in their investigation especially a woman named agent Willett who was known as a human lie detector and so on January 10th they would go and to Emo's pizza where Mike was watching anxiously as his coworker worked like normal as his white truck sat outside they were sending her directly to this man who they believed was an abductor and they were having her go in to ask him some questions watch how he responded possibly ask him they could search his truck and just see how he responded to everything happening and when they did so they asked him can we search your truck inside and he actually agreed and they did so well we'll it was asking him questions and she could tell that he was very nervous however he was being cooperative and she began to ask him about Ben and what has happened to him and this man began to say things about his godson named Shawn instead and this agent was extremely confused and not getting anywhere with his casual questioning so she decided to take another route and she said look your tires have very unique tread marks and we have placed you at the crime scene of the abduction have been only they had their man and he knew that they had him - 41 year-old Michael J Devlin would then admit to not only having been but a boy named Shawn and he proceeded to say as he was crying that he was a bad man but the police feared what he exactly meant by he was responsible for Ben and Shawn where were they and what had happened to them once they realized that the Shawn that he was talking about was Shawn Hornbeck they realized that he had had this boy for four years and three months and he had had been for now four days that is when they forced Michael to take them to his apartment where he opens the door and they walked in to see two wide-eyed boys sitting on the couch playing video games staring at them and disbelief everyone's disbelief they were still alive after this the County Sheriff would make a public announcement saying we have some good news for you and probably some unbelievable news we located Ben this afternoon in the city of Kirkwood and we also located Shawn Hornbeck who is at the same and this was a shock to people everywhere immediately been had it ran to the officers as soon as they opened the door and they would say to Ben you know he's safe you're both safe but Shawn just kind of sat there stunned and it had been four years he had lost all hope he didn't think that anyone was ever going to come for him he didn't think he was ever gonna get out of that situation and he had been so strong through it all he had been so resilient and he had he had found a way to survive and now he didn't have to and that was just extremely shocking for him to process they were saved which is not something many abduction victims get to say however that doesn't mean that they didn't go through so much torture to get there and when the police gave them a little time to reunite with their families and to kind of get back into as much of a normal routine as they could they began to ask them what exactly happened and Shawn was very open and honest and he said that that day that he went missing he was out riding his bike on the highway when he heard a truck coming up behind him and he thought that they were going a little slow but he didn't really you know think that anything was gonna happen to him he just thought perhaps that something had happened they had wanted to slow down but they would keep going once he got over however he would then be hit by this truck being knocked off his bike and his bike would be ruined and then he would look up that at this very large man who would grab him and fling him into the back of the truck before tying his wrists together and throwing his bike in as well eventually this man would come back put him in the front seat the passenger seat and pull out his gun from the lockbox and this is when Shawn knew that he was in a lot of danger and and he needed to do whatever this man said and that's exactly what Michael wanted was it this gun to be a scare tactic Michael then told Sean that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and then they continued driving through the city until they got to Michael's apartment and then Sean would be put through a tremendous amount of horrible sexual assault every single day he would be chained or roped up to a bed and when they were sleeping Sean would actually be tied at the waist to Michael who was also tied at the waist so he knew that Sean wouldn't try to escape when Michael would go to work he would leave Sean tied up and he would occasionally come back at me lunch breaks to give him food then go to the bathroom and assault to him but Sean never tried to run away because Michael had told him that if he did Michael would hurt Sean's entire family and he was trying to protect them slowly but surely Sean began to gain Michaels trust he never tried to run he didn't scream he did what he was told and he was even earning things like junk food and video games and you be tied up less and he really thought that this was how he was going to survive that he was doing what he needed he was being good he was keeping himself and his family safe however this wouldn't last because Michaels mind was not normal it didn't think like a regular person and he was obviously very unstable and one day he would come home from work and he would put a gun to Sean his head before taking him outside of the truck and driving and driving and driving to the middle of nowhere once they were out of the car and a place that had no civilization around Michael began to strangle Sean and if it wasn't for what Sean did next and the bravery he showed he would have died that day Sean with the last breaths that he had in him told Michael that he would do whatever he asked of him he wouldn't run away he would pretend to be Michael's son that he wouldn't tell a soul he would keep Michaels secret and reluctantly Michael actually accepted this offer because Sean had also said that if he didn't follow these rules Michael could end up killing him it went back to the apartment and things were better as much as you can say in this situation I mean it took a while but Michael eventually began to trust Sean even more and would let him out of the house and would let him drive the truck and would actually let him make friends he didn't let him go to school of course because there could be no paperwork that could have been done in that situation but he did let him out to go do errands and things on his own he would even go to outings with a neighbor who was his friends family and Sean was such a good actor that everybody believed that him and Michael had an exceptional father-son bond and that that's all it was and one day actually while at this friend's house they were all watching TV when a picture of Shawn Hornbeck would come up on the TV and his parents would be asking about their missing son and the entire family turned to look at Sean and said that's you isn't it that's you and Sean just shrugged it off and said oh no you know what it wasn't me and he was just kind of joking about it and they believed him for whatever reason and didn't go to the police with this even though he looks just like this boy has the same name as this boy didn't go to school I don't know why this family maybe they didn't want to get involved maybe they just didn't really think it through that much but they did nothing four years into his abduction just when Sean thought that he was going to survive this he was learning how to do everything that Michael asked Michael started to get bored of him and said that he wanted to get a younger boy to satisfy his needs and so Sean began to throw a huge fits and he didn't need another boy he didn't mean to do this to another boy please don't do this to another boy and basically Michael ignored him and forced Shawn to go with him to basically be in a calm to this duction but all Sean ended up doing was comforting Ben as he began to cry on the way back to the apartment and he tried to also protect him from any assaults that Michael tried always stepping in between them and thankfully he would only need to do so for four days now Michael was in custody and he was charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count of armed criminal action On January 18th of 2007 he did not have a criminal record previous to this but he did plead not guilty at this time however everybody had said he had already confessed all of this all he really said though was that he was lonely prior to having Sean there with him and that's the only thing he was worried about was what his parents were going to think how he was going to tell them but by October 8th Michael was actually pleading guilty now this was 278 counts of abduction and sexual assault for both boys now including the charges brought against him for making explicit videos while he sexually assaulted them his sentence is said to be up to 74 life sentences for years end to michael sentence he would actually be stabbed on April 9th of 2011 by a fellow inmate named Troy Fenton who used to icepicks that he made from his typewriter and he allegedly named them Ben and Sean and he began to attack Michael however when he was stopped by the officers he was yelled at he did stop and Michael didn't end up dying from that he actually survived Ben would actually be 25 today and lives and goes to school and st. Louis and he loves video production and he seems to have grown up to be a really great guy and Ben even attended the county sheriff's retirement party the one who helped in their entire case and finding men and Sean and Sean is 27 today and went on to attend a community college and actually was really wanting to go into psychology or social work or something where he could help victims and children who have things like this Jaycee Dugard family was dealing with you know her coming home and her being rescued he was giving them advice on how to help her and what should do because of course it's not an easy transition back into the real world but he has to tattoo on his arms now as well with respect and one with faith he said that's the two most important things to him throughout the years Shawn even went on ride-alongs with different deputies to just kind of help out with them as well and a discovery of these two boys was actually known as the misery miracle because of how astounding and unheard of that it is that this could happen and then an abduction could end with two boys being is still alive and it truly does remind me of the Steven stainer abduction case and when another little boy was fond of the picture the older one did whatever was necessary to keep them safe and it's it's beautiful and the strength that they show is something that I can't even imagine but why did Michael do all of this what made him this way and no one could really figure it out and drink interviews he was really ready to talk about himself and his thoughts and what he why he did it but he didn't know why he did it he said that he had a really happy childhood and he was adopted into a huge Christian family with five other children but that he was never assaulted because many people think that people who assault were assaulted in their past but he said nothing ever happened that he really was happy and that he had always had kind of these deeper darker thoughts throughout his life that he had kind of pushed down for quite a long time and then when he was a child he once witnessed a child being hit by a bus and felt nothing zero empathy he said he had been out going when he was younger but he had recently become more introverted and quiet and he had actually developed diabetes and he had he had two toes amputated because of that and that was the same year he abducted Sean he was said to be curious yet emotionless and that he had always had an attraction to young boys now there has actually been an update in this case as of 2009 police have been looking into Michel Devlin as a suspect for up to five other missing cases of missing boys now there's three more in Missouri one in Illinois and one in Michigan now you might say well Michigan is not close why would he have anything to do with that however it was a 12 year old named Steven craft who disappeared a year prior to Sean in Benton Township Michigan and the connection is that that is where Michael's family used to go for vacations nearby this area and this is an ongoing investigation but police believe that Ben and Sean may not have been his only victims although he says that they are they're the only two boys he ever abducted or did anything to I'm just glad to be able to talk about a case where he victims were actually alive and got to go on to lend their lives and if you were watching this either of you boys I just want you to know that regardless of what you're doing with your life now the fact that you survived that and you found so much strength within yourself to want to keep fighting is such a heroic thing and you could relax and rest for the rest of your life and still be a wonderful hero and I'm so so thankful that you were still here and that you fought to keep yourself alive because it was all you and nobody else so yeah I'd love to hear all of your thoughts down below and if you have any other salt cases where the victims survived I would love to do those stories so always leave those requests down below and don't ever forget to speak up your voice is powerful enough and I loved it too absolute pieces okay bye [Music]
