We call it a Shaker Hood in the USA as well We also got three* different versions of the 351C/351W/351M engines

The 351 Cleveland got much better heads than the various versions on the Windsor engine. 5 tears only in US ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

We got mainly 351W from the 60โ€™s thru the mid-90โ€™s IIRC

Hereโ€™s a recent primer on the varieties

welcome back to the skid factory where today we're checking out old Cox XY Falcon GT hit that subscribe button down the bottom there grab yourself a and ugly if you can't get any lemon squash and enjoy the show cheers to it this is old Cox 1970 XY Falcon it isn't a GT but it looks exactly like one so I'm going to call it that so don't get your knickers in a knot so this he actually purchased this as a an unfinished project and had a ton of work put into the bodywork the rotisserie build the underside of it you could eat off it had all the parts with it but just needed assembling got it really cheap for what these things are worth a fortune in Australia so he just had to basically finish the car so that was supposed to be a quick and easy throw out together but that's not how things work when you're building cars so he he fell deeply down the rabbit hole and ended up spending a fortune on it very sort of detailed driveline build had a list of requirements that were probably well the list of requirements were bound to get him into trouble as far as cost goes so I think he's ticked most of the boxes you know it's pretty a pretty neat thing the body had sustained a little bit of bump damage just from sitting around for years that's yet to be fixed but generally speaking it is very tidy and and the paint job is was done very well so under the bonnet this is a three five one Cleveland obviously we had in the US side Cleveland's and Windsor's we add them here add windsors as well and these these body shapes came with either for some reason in Australia we latched onto the Cleveland's and decided we'd use them as the performance engine I don't know why because it probably would have been a lot easier if we just done what the you student kept a Windsor because then we wouldn't have had the done done all the development ourselves but it is what it is and the cleveo is the engine for Australia so there it is this thing here I don't know what they call it in America it's probably called like a hood hood induction or something but in Australia we call it a shaker and that's a heaps better name and the reason they call it a shaker is because when you're sitting in the front seat and it's spoken through the bonnet it's going like this because of your big cam and how cool the name is that so that's obviously the air induction scoop you just have to pull that all apart I think it's sort of half made out of an original air cleaner maybe I'm not sure so we'll rip that off and so we can have a quick look at what's going on with the engine there's a lot of modernization involved here as well so we're not gonna find my 7/16 socket I'll pull that off so that's not a carburetor and that's a good thing it's a Holley throttle body similar to what the Nova had on it but it does not have injectors in it we've retained port injection on this engine this is an original old Edelbrock manifold from probably the 80s or something like that it's been converted to port injection by a machinist that we know dams sort of in this region and what he does is drills he puts him in a mill and mills out the whole new threads him and he has these threaded adapters made up and the reason for that is because welding onto old used cast manifolds from the 80s can be very difficult to get it get it done cleanly so instead of welding the the bosses on they're actually screwed in with a very strong lock tight on them screwed down to whatever height they need to be and let sit and then you just cut off the bottom of them and port around them works really well done it use that method a few times on various things so it's got ls3 injectors just because there's plenty of them lying around and we got them cheap the ECU is a an elite 2000 which is the same as a twenty five on it just doesn't have drive-by-wire not required because it doesn't have driver so there's no need to use the 2500 if you aren't using drive-by-wire so it's got obviously eight injectors got LS one type coils on it direct fire it's got a crank angle sensor that is kind of made out of a dizzy housing inside of it it is has a like a Bosch type pick up out of a VT Commodore which is a Hall effect sensor with an extra window for to give it a sort of a 360-degree split between the cycle that came from an Australian supplier it is a good product but I'm not going to say who who supplied it because they were a very difficult to get along with and they also ripped me off very badly on it so I'm not gonna mention them it does worth day so I white all this up he is obviously inside the car it's got a fuse box it's got a few little extra bits and pieces going on with ole Cox desires for all sorts of things that not normal people don't need got fuel pressure and oil pressure obviously that's that's always a good thing to have it's got an extra map sensor inside the guard there to get it's got its about to map senses one of them's for the engine the other one is for brake vacuum because it's got a electric vacuum pump a hell a pump which is a common thing on a lot of new direct injection engines he was concerned it was going to have no vacuum because because the size of the cam so he implemented all that that ECU controls that pump it switches it on according to what the brake vacuum is a little bit more complexity but it is what it is and it is doable and a lot of engines that have big big cams do need that so it's nice to be able to control that from from the ECU as well just switched by a relay so the engines been rebuilt it was done by Alcock smight Ross he has a lot of experience in clear those over the years it's a it's a fairly sort of basic rebuild it still uses the original like cast block end cast heads it doesn't have aluminium heads on it it's just been sort of rebuilt in the style that that it would have been done back in this in the 80s sort of thing before we had all this cheap cylinder heads and stuff available to us the modernisation of it is basically that the fuel injection and that does work very well it has tamed it down quite a lot it's it runs really nicely it easy to drive the front of the engine has got a bunch of billet serpentine belt gear on it again that was one of his wishes the belts falling off things hanging out here like it's usually pretty ugly if you want to put all that gear I'm in front of a of an older engine we take it for granted these days with modern stuff because it's all been engineered into it but it is it is quite expensive and difficult to implement this sort of stuff on an old engine like this it works really well it's got all the goods got power steering it's got air conditioning it's got an alternator large capacity alternator and of course the water pump no complaints with that stuff as far as I'm aware all looks pretty good it's got a steering rack and all that sort of thing done to it which will have a look underneath in a second standard sort of radiator that it would have had back in the 70s obviously an old croc special because he is the radiator man they're my fans instead of a engine fan just to get a bit more modernization their aircon condenser as usual won't need to go underneath and have a look I reckon she's pretty clean underneath here as I said it looks like it's had a little rotisserie style build done on it with the all the floor paint everything has been redone it's really neat nice to see also nice to work with it because up here just to the usual stuff that you put on old cleavers steering rack this is a I'd call it a add a we rack or a European rack conversion where you come it retains the original tie rod ends and has a bar so it's a center mount rack commonly seen bolted to the firewall of a European car like opals and Daewoo's which is like a Korean Opel it's a pretty common thing I don't know who made this one but it seems to work okay it it's I think there was a bit of a problem with the with actual mounting of it because it might have been made to fit a Windsor engine which is a lot more compact but uh ole Cox working his way through that to get it right feels nice to steer anyway it's had a a really good brake upgrade I believe they're Hopper's Stoppers which is an Australian company that basically uses OAM style braking systems and adapts them to older vehicles so front and rear is using the PBR style caliper which is fitted to both Holden's and falcons it will end Ford's in Australia there is the same that's plugged into the 9-inch diff that it's got just got some basic headers on it old been making exhaust since before I was born probably so he he knows what he's doing as far as getting these old things to work with as a nice talking Street engine it's got like Troy headers on it not bought foreigner ones also I think they're a bit easier to package in the space that these vehicles have it's got it's got it all shielded and everything sort of a lot of attention to detail in this this this is the old top loader it's been rebuilt to how they described it as muscle car master spec which is a like a race series in Australia where they have they race all the cars like this obviously muscle cars so it's got a very nice fancy shifter on it race sort of spec thing it does shift gears alright these old things the shifters were really nasty in them probably probably one of the worst things about them was the old linkages and stuff like that this is this thing is flash it works really well a little bounce spot here doesn't have an expert because that's not how old rolls because he was is old-school Xbox are for young men got the usual mufflers same muscles that I always used on everything Magnaflow style down a back here we got a big 9 inch that was in it these did come with a 9 inch diff when they had cleaver we know in this spec the whole thing's been completely rebuilt again by the same guy that did the the transmission muscle car master spec I'm sure it's not going to break too easily in the back we've got the Falcon style brakes it's got the handbrake that actually works which is a revelation on a car they say you pull the handbrake lever and the car doesn't roll away so that's that's off a late-model Falcon in Australia they call it a Banksia handbrake it's like a single u-shaped drum that doesn't have any Springs or anything it uses the new shaped as a return system on it works great sway bars and stuff they never had him this has got it he's just recently put these cow tracks in just to try and stop it from axle cramping when he's driving it like a 20 year old I think he's still got a do a bit of adjustment with that big fuel tank this is the same fuel tank is what we put into the Fairlane after the first one was rusted to the eyeballs its massive it's like 130 litres that's the GTHA tank that they used in the rating when they raced these at Bathurst in the late 60s early 70s it has got a Airmotive phantom sock style pump in it that sort of a surge tank set up in tank so you can tear the fuel pump it's great it doesn't need a lot of fuel pump because it's not that powerful in the in the grand scheme of things in the modern age so that's it's a Deadhead system the regulators in the back again you don't have to run lines back and forward heating up the fuel that's this way I like to do it so it's run it means a really nice combo pros if you don't like combo pros you not a human so don't talk to me if you don't like them they're probably one of the best old-school wheels that around and they're also very light which is really good much lighter than most of these Japanese race wheels that people flap on a bit it's got awful tires on it and so's that everyone runs these tires on these old old-school size rims because it I think they're like the only ones you can still buy other than eating streets or something like that Seabees also got them on the back of his tanner and he he is basically scared to drive it because it's so dangerous with a turbo one use it so don't buy these toys well you can buy them if you've got like a 58 horsepower Windsor or something or a red motor but don't try and put power through these toys speaking of that let's go for a drive so I think I'll built sort of ideal or his scope or whatever this car was to get part of his youth back because he had these when he was a young fella I think nothing everyone a police well no yeah was their old Cox age they probably did cuz it was just a normal everyday vehicle back then although he did have a Jeep the GT versions and they weren't really worth a great deal in there with hundreds of thousands of dollars now because nostalgia yeah but so yeah like his his plan was I think to have what would have been the perfect GT for him but modernize it so this has got air conditioning it's got power steering central locking looking at love doesn't it doesn't have Pierre we know this but we can live with that I think that's fine let's go the power to back it up to the fuel injection got Auto control [Music] hello look up all the gear have noisy windows got a it's got the noisy with corner windows just to keep that old-school feel about it I've got a stereo it's got wipers it's actually pretty nice to drive it that's still a bit of old school the better lesson sure you can't really take that away from it and I'm part of this game for the meal - is old loves cotton for overdrive and he wanted saying that he could hop in and drive to say Sydney it 1 or 2 they sing I'm not too sure what did geezer in it but I know it what's not the end now you know think it would probably be somewhere around a three month yeah it's it first and second on these this toploader is different first seconds it writes in a higher she's an industrial air box I can't get any through verse that's good you broke your hand there yeah she's still got the old original gear and it the top loader been rebuilt but she's still an industrial sort of thing he was talking about putting an auto in and then t56 instead of modernizing it better I think he sort of decided to keep it a bit more original in that regard and it's just really nicely and the clutch is beautiful it's got a twin black clutch unit it's got a I think it's like I'm a clout odd relic control on its that's got a contentious slide cylinder and stuff it like it it feels a beautiful to draw I wouldn't say it's just like a crawler but it's not too bad I get to see you inside hard to drive or is the gangs on the bloody crawler it's yes no second that's got the rack conversion a bit of fiddling around with that rack conversion they as with many of the shelf products they seem to built the thing and never actually fitted it to a car because it didn't actually fit this Cleveland engine they must have designed it off a Windsor based setup which is not that common in Australia everything's windsor in the States everything's cleaver here like that they did sell winters in in in these vehicles but most people for Cleveland's in it because we've got better aftermarket support for that but that was what was in the XY GTS and Judi hi Jose and and further on we built our own sort of aftermarket performance scene around Cleveland I'm not sure why that happened but that's just how it is so yeah the rap didn't fit against the sump which is obviously bigger it's a lot bigger engine physically on the outside so that was a bit of a drama that they work through that now that just working through getting rid of bumps here and stuff adjusting moving things around changing the wheel alignment stuff like that so I think that's old also being protection is very a damn thing about stuff and also pretty patient so yeah he's got the resources to just keep working away at it sometimes he gets the shit's with it and has a bit of a rage and then you just sort of put it away for a bit and then come back to it yeah the way to go yeah there was a slight vibration in the drive line which Roth got one date so those are rights for a quick lemon squash and he's jumping the car let's go for a drive to and when you think and the vibration was absolutely minimal and you know watching yourself and another giggle bit too for you to pick that up is yeah just goes to say how and how much you love this car and have perfect it you want it yeah there was a vibration there but it was it's tiny you know it's I mean I'm used to driving a shitty old challenger that is noisy and it's why for to drive but this thing in comparison is amazing this is just yeah speech as for how quickly how well these car drives yeah it's pretty impressive for an old girl and it isn't as easy as people think to modernize an old car it's not about the interior or the air conditioning it's it's you've got to go right down to the to the the roots of the suspension and the way and the way the thing was built in the first place and it's it's quite difficult to actually lift lift an old vehicle up to the quality of new cars as of there's a hell of lot going into it Jason trace these two oh yeah oh yeah there would have been a massive handful flying around on cross ply tires and I think they've might've exaggerated that how much power they made that it was probably 20 for the at the time big angry engines with no brakes and no tires much that Lee would have bet some bowls around these things around back there since for sure so I'm going to question out in comparison to the way the Fairlane but also the Nova kind of the this so similar this is definitely a lot less of a cruisee car and that's mainly because it's got a manual gearbox in it so you got to be a bit more engaged with it you can't just sort of backpacking in a d4 drag and go you also can't put it in neutral and hit the red line and then he'd be for maximum respect which is can I say you know but I guess you can always hold the clutch in and hit the red line and then dump the clutch can actually do it all night it doesn't make any many noises so it's definitely not a BS Commodore we better sneak this back to all now he's just he just went out for thought I'm going to get beer or something we kind of just borrowed it just getting some big big thumbs up from someone then so we better snake it back and pretend it never moved he'll never know thanks for watching as always be sure to hit that subscribe button down the bottom right or at the end wherever I put it better get home for a lemon squash I think we're being followed that came yeah I think it's the neighborhood it is maybe he wants her rice you you I thought this thing was done and finished that is done mate it's part of the Skip factory after sales service everything comes back for a thousand K check out
