this video is sponsored by universal audio I almost quit but then I decided that I would just try things my own way and this is one I eventually this chain you I'm going to share with you a very important strategy that saved my failing music career back when no one was paying attention to my work this is information that every artist needs to hear I'm going to give you detailed secrets on how to build an audience in today's social media driven world and show you exactly how I create my videos that have now gotten the attention of millions of viewers but first I need to explain why it's so impossible to make it these days as a musician this jar represents the career you're going for and the paper represents the barrier of entry for years you'll build up your skills and experience a little bit at a time even as you grow this pile the barrier isn't going to be so easy to break for the longest time especially for classical musicians major competitions were a way to break through or getting signed by a major label with the right connections or if you're really rich dumping in a bunch of cash can sometimes make things happen the truth is no matter how great you are you're not guaranteed an audience sure there may be exceptions to this especially if you're a genius freak of nature but this is quite rare and also not all Geniuses are discovered this is why becoming a great musician and building a successful music career are separate things this may sound frustrating but let me assure you there are ways to break through this barrier even if you have zero resources to start with everyone has a slightly different method so let me tell you what worked for me about six years ago I found myself being a graduate of the Juilliard school with the ability to play the piano at a very high level but I had no hope for a future in music I almost quit but then I decided that I would just try things my own way and this is when I picked up a very simple habit and that was the start documenting little pieces of my work and sharing it publicly one post at a time eventually this changed everything and I was able to find my audience and carve out my own niche in the music Community the formula is simple make something worth sharing and repeat consistently the reason why this works is that your posts will start to formulate a digital gallery that represents you and your work this gives you an opportunity to reach a lot of people and depending on how you formulate your posts your freelance work can directly benefit from this if you make this a part of your routine it's a game changer because it allows you to naturally engage with the process of sharing bits of your work and sustain it over a long period of time by no means am I saying that it should be a musician's goal to break through into a career this may not be your thing for myself the bottom of the jar used to be becoming a traditional concert pianist but then I realize it's really not for me I love performing but I want to combine it with composing music for many different genres and also being an educator so now I'm going to show you an example of how exactly I turn a small idea into a most as I'm doing this I'm going to give you all of the tips and tricks that I've gathered throughout the years there's so much frustrating trial and error I'm going to break this down into five sections idea formation equipment filming editing and social media management as a starting point when forming ideas I think it's very important to ask myself this simple question what is interesting to me at the moment I have been interested in this Schubert impromptu it's just been on my mind and I want to do something with it with my own twist and something more modern maybe take the pattern I like to add an educational twist to my videos but you can also just simply play music okay so now that we have the idea let's talk a little bit about equipment even though I have all of the equipment that I can make a very fancy YouTube video with for social media posts I use my phone and that is because it eliminates this extra bit of friction that comes with having a bigger setup this is the interface that I've been using it's a volt 276 by universal audio the reason why I love this setup is because I can have the recording quality be very high but I don't need my computer I just plug all this directly into my phone this is why I'm choosing to partner with universal audio for this video audio quality is the most important thing for musicians it comes before video and editing quality and this setup allows me to capture the highest quality audio in a simple and portable form if you need a place to start consider getting the volt to 76 Studio pack it comes with the interface a condenser mic headphones cables and a bunch of great resources that can help improve your audio in post now in terms of mounting your phone and microphone somewhere you can get really creative with this currently I'm using this little Gadget this is essentially a mic stand not a tripod and I have a microphone for my voice here and I have a phone holder here on a gooseneck so now in terms of how I record the piano sound I have these two mics these are SP ones by universal audio and I just placed this inside the piano like so it's very safe and I do this so that all of this equipment fits into a bag now let's get into actually filming this I'm sure that the microphone is close enough okay now we are in business so I'm just going to focus on what I really like about this pattern talk about it what I love we're off to a great start as always how to turn Schubert to something a little more modern so as you can see I adjusted my opening line so that now I'm more specific as to what I'm going to do in the post this is basically descending Triads in general I film more than I will use I just allow myself to go with the flow while filming in editing I can choose which footage to actually keep so a lot of times when we think of a post we may assume that it will take way less time than it actually does there are always so many little things that you need to take care of and even with the simplest setup there are always little technical problems that you might encounter I'm giving myself 30 minutes to film in reality this actually took about an hour to film because I started to experiment with how all of this would sound using UA's Electra 88 Vintage Keys originally I was going to use this for a different post but I liked how it sounded with the modified Schubert so I just went with it I of course believe in approaching projects with efficiency but sometimes it's better to leave yourself extra room for some spontaneity now let's jump into editing so as you can see I have this under one minute the important thing to note is that you can't include everything for example I filmed some tips on the technical aspect of this pattern and in order order to play this with Clarity it helps to practice these but I decided that it wasn't as relevant to this particular post so I went ahead and deleted it so let me show you a little secret look at this cut here of course so what I'm basically doing is I'm starting to speak or I'm starting to play as the other footage is tapering off and that helps with the short attention span people have these days I think it's very useful to label things sometimes it can be a bit overboard but if you think that it's going to help with the message and going to add Clarity then it's always great now I'm going to show you the final post which you may have already seen if you follow me on social media pay attention to the text on the left to see how I'm breaking up the sections of the video how to turn Schubert [Music] into something a little more modern the harmony by applying this pattern to other courts but I think it will actually work better on a different keyboard sound that's so pretty this is the Vintage Elektra 88. the music bin continues on but let's now move on to social media management starting first with what I do after I post for me it's really important to review the material just so that I can make adjustments for improvements in the future so at the end there I wrote don't be afraid to experiment and I think I missed an opportunity to show how I was experimenting with different harmonies and different formations of the chord oh that's cool I'm such a fan of showing the full process of something I wish I would have included that I of course always scan the comments because I love reading what viewers have to say I think it's very important to be directly in touch with your audience but don't try to please everyone and go for that approval in the past I definitely had periods where I was overthinking things and was concerning myself about negative comments now I know it's best to move forward with confidence if I believe in a project to expect that there will be some haters and trolls and to give more energy to the positive aspects of the community now I'm going to give you five ways you can start applying this information to your work use my tips to help you form your own workflow and system focus on things you're currently interested in and you're currently working on it could even be video clips that already exist in your folders then make posts that are 30 to 60 seconds to start off choose a posting schedule that works for you and commit to it without missing a post for a fixed period of time for example it could be something like posting twice a week for three months you'll eventually find a rhythm and the important thing again is to make this a part of your routine rather than a once in a blue moon type of assignment I'm going to leave you with a thought that's been on my mind what is the point of all of this yes we as musicians in order to sustain ourselves we need to make things work and have a career but largely speaking we are a part of a huge movement and a culture that needs to thrive based on participation and based on the quality of the music being made the art being made and so as a world is changing the form in which we contribute to this is also changing so without being weighed down by the negatives just focusing on the positives and finding ways to make it work so that we can move forward as musicians and artists of this generation is I think our best bet thank you so much again to universal audio for sponsoring this video thank you to my patrons on patreon subscribe if you haven't already and I'll see you in the next video
