"And if you took to me like
A gull takes to the wind
Well I'd've jumped from my trees
And I'd've danced like the king of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would've fared well"
Oh boy can I relate to this. So lonely.
You gotta hear this one song. It'll change your life.
My god, The Shins. Chutes too Narrow, The New Pornographerโs Twin Cinema, Wolf Paradeโs Apologies to the Queen Mary and Fiery Furnaceโs Blueberry Boat were the soundtrack to my collegiate years.
What I like so much about this music video is that it's a perfect representation of rock's awkward transition from the 90s but it's done really well in a way that, I imagine, evoked a sentimental and familiar feeling even when it was initially released and still new.
How many classic album covers can you spot?
Minutemen: Double Nickels on the Dime Replacements: Let it Be
I know thereโs a bunch more but Iโm blanking.
I miss the old 4-piece band and the sound that accompanied them. A good chemistry of sound and a cool group.
Their best work was the first 3 albums. That's how i like to remember them, James being the songwriter i know, but i don't care. The old band during the Chutes too Narrow days were massive globally at university/campuses across the world. I remember being at one university in 2005, our group loved Chutes too Narrow, we had to talk to a group of programmers in Japan, one of the guys had a Chutes too Narrow t-shirt on, pure co-incidence, but that was a big album in that 2003-2006 era and hugely influential during the heart f the 2000's indie rock years. GReat, great, great album and a lot of people knew it and hopped on board with it in those days.
Caring is creepy is one of my favorite songs of all time
What the Shins/Mercer do better than anyone is long melodies and beautiful, soaring choruses. He uses really spare, restrained instrumentation in general, so that when the song hits the chorus, and he adds perhaps one more instrument to the texture, it's a moment of real grandeur.
Not to be a douchebag hipster but I first got this EP when the song was called "When You Notice The Stripes", later changed to "New Slang" for the SubPop single. Original version:

More naming weirdness: not a lot of folks know that "The Shins" was a song by Flake Music, a band from Albuquerque, NM that would later change their name to The Shins:
