The Secret To Good Acting

this is this thing called practical aesthetics which is the Atlantic Theatre Company and this company I'm associated with in Dave Mamet and plate made it up and it's basically a Stanislavski but it's just a little more evolved and the the tenant of that which I find fascinating is that there's a difference between what the actor is doing and what the character is doing to the audience they look the same you can't tell the difference if you do it correctly but you know if you're standing on the ramparts talking to your troops and you say what I'm doing here is protecting the kingdom you're going to be making up but when you're talking to a bunch of men and you're getting them to swear allegiance that you can do because I'll know when they've done it I can look in their eyes I can tell you whether I've succeeded or not in real time right now and I think the best acting you set yourself a goal that you can accomplish in real time right now whether you do or not is a function of the script and a function of the other actors and you know that's when the improv just gets fantastic when you're not getting what you need and you know you get this thing going and even though you're saying the lines verbatim it's it's it's a wild and wooly improvisation I think that's acting at its best when you don't know what the hell's gonna happen
