growing up in just the world efficient as a young little scab I ran around the docks and cutoff shorts in the summer and whatever it was about fishing and that part of my life I just gravitated towards it and it just became you know obsession I guess or it was just something that always created happiness in me so I just kept going with it my whole life and you know from a young age I knew I was gonna do something with the fishing I didn't know I kind of knew what guiding was somewhat that I certainly learned more and more about it as soon as I kind of became aware of guiding as something that could actually point your life at I never thought never looked back I always thought it was gonna do it I even went to school for a while but I I was just screwing around I knew that - I wasn't gonna go to school for too long [Music] you know coming up here and I have come up here on and off one of my my main sponsors mojo sportswear he's right here in defu niak which is north of Destin just a little inland so I come up here periodically to visit with them and I've been up here fishing a couple times before I fished with David it reminds me of what authority used to be it's you still have these just huge miles and miles of pines natural Pines not even the planet pine natural pines and Oaks and these natural rivers that drain out into the Gulf that have been untouched by man other than the bridge that goes over and you visit with some of the people that live here in their old Florida you just have that old Florida mentality we got an ideal tide see if we can't see some fish getting left kind of dry you know uh-huh we can throw a fly at them fly fishing so real shallow stuff very shallow stuff they may even have to hop out of the boat bottom part in some places in our you know the places will up out we'll hope it's hard okay but yeah good just kind of like happen this time here first you know this is the first of the low enough tides that we see this kind of fishing right around this time of year further into the winter just gets lower and lower you know guys guys always refer to the boat as their office and it's not everyday most of the time you're sharing the office with clients David and I live in Florida on opposite ends of Florida but we both share the same office which is a unique situation there's a respect that we expect in our office it's just that unspoken understanding oh that's pretty good the beach and their goodbyes might be a little bit let's put on grabby just saw a tail at one what took so long see if it pops it up again yep tail at one to fish there I think yeah you're hoping never you feel like they're not really moving too much somebody saw it nice yes he did see the little guy got it you leave it to me to throw at the little guy always a little guy out of the group that grabs it seems like that was a little left of where wounded we had that bigger tale thanks brother that was a beautiful shot man those tails were pretty I bet he's gonna be colored up you know right now it's pretty tannic in here I bet it's been that rain three or four years since I got the shorter tail already really I've seen tailing redfish but I'm on that in that's right you know the many of the red fish that we catch the South Florida or more of a silver look they they can be red if you catch them in the backcountry where there's some fresh water drainage and stuff but and I'm sure it has to do with what they're eating and the grass they're on and the water they're living in but one of the first things I noticed when catching my first fish here was how copper I mean these things were just bronze as bronze can be and they're just amazingly brilliantly colored bright orange just shimmery like a new penny amazing colors on these fish up here not a giant that was a cool shot it's not always about how big the fish is it's about how you caught him that's right I don't care how big he is if he's tailing you know yeah give me a target where after the accurate that's that's what it's all about yeah I was about a fun accurate on that I was a redfish to a tarpon to me in comparison there is no comparison but there is [Music] tarpon may only give you one shot especially a big one in Clearwater you got one opportunity to put the fly in the right spot or it's not going to happen and when the flight gets here you better move it right where it's not going to happen everything about the fish is it's a complicated game and it's changes a lot you know maybe it's barometric maybe it's a little tip rise or fall and there's just the complexity of what you have to pay attention to to figure it all out just always drove me towards afternoon red fish in a good way especially from a guides perspective they're a little more angler friendly the red fish may give you two or three cast before he realized through there it doesn't mean they're less rewarding when you hook them doesn't mean it's let you still require a good cast the right strip right approach from the from the guides perspective so it's it's a cool game I mean this morning he David pulled me up to the school of redfish that were tailing ten or twelve fish I haven't had that opportunity to be on the bow in years to throw at a school redfish like that and I screwed it up I got nervous he's still a pile of them right there how'd you like the trout sir Knight kept coming at me he's coming in right there to the left of it just to the left of the fly they got a little weird no but that one eight yeah I couldn't feel the fly so I knew he ate it they're heading up in there they could all chill out up in there that was a lot more fish there's a line I thought was there yeah I'm pretty happy he was up on the bow first cuz you know I hoped my I hope I'm castings on par for today a lot of times when you're fishing with friends if they're not somebody you fish with all the time you I don't care who you are you a little bit a little bit nervous tonight and I'll admit that I was nice nice I don't even my glasses on I guess it's about a glasses part not a monster but that's my system and they get in this stuff it's so shallow they're like I can't do much can't go anywhere yeah they're fighting the foliage that's I'm not a bad fish at all so to be with someone that you know understands the game understands the office understands fishing like you do it's almost it's it's almost a relaxing feeling because you don't have to worry about any what the other guys doing and I totally just let him take control of the boat he knows where he's going this is his water I don't and I know when we get there he's gonna do the right things and respect my office there's just the way I would his it's incredible fishery man this is so much fun for me because target practice man different you know you're playing in a field that's just the other area of awarenesses yeah literally the size of a glass I mean imagine you're facing that right now he does have a lateral line so he can feel but you gotta get pressure change lives try to explain that to people you know like when you get in a bathtub the water rises the same thing happens about with this boat you know in the shallow spot yeah you push too hard in it that's a nice one the bad little redfish were four inches of water no he was so barely you know just barely showing did he turned sideways that orange glow you know yeah hold on do I'm gonna take your picture I'm do you like in Wagga it's nothing better than a super shallow fishtailing you know see you buddy they'll just like snakes another Attica snake and you can see how they can just disappear on us when they just if they just sit down a little bit yeah you know the water is cool enough they can just sit so let's go next day yeah don't you catch one all right push you around the Florida Keys and Everglades and many other places that have been in the world been lucky to visit are beautiful in their own way they all have their little idiosyncrasies that make them beautiful the keys is the water and the mangroves and the coral reefs and the just that that ocean blue that comes into the flats that doesn't exist in a lot of places here you have this miles of these miles of shallow water then you have this this grass that grows out off the shoreline but the whole horizon is covered with hardwoods oak trees pine trees I mean big pine trees you know 80 feet tall just forests of it and to be in a setting where you're in this Marsh and just 50 yards away from where you just saw are tailing redfish is a pine tree it's so out of my element but it's so beautiful at the same time all right bro we've warmed up we've caught a few let's come up [Music] I love fishing redfish in the change of pace in our seasons is nice to have other things you know after you know four months of just straight tarpon fishing it's kind of nice to see a real shallow redfish but you know for like three or four days and then I'm thinking of tarpon again if I could tarpon fish 300 days a year I would tarpon fish 300 days a year that's it he's never satisfied it's like this never-ending Drive it's almost an illness because it's this obsession that you're so obsessed with and in the back of your mind you know you're never gonna be satisfied which is cool because you always have a goal it's a goal that keeps moving ahead the more knowledge you get further away the goal gets and then you catch up to it and it goes here you're never happy with what you know same kind of reached and turnaround you did every single one of them knows right where the deep water is - every time I always run right towards the deeper stuff fella it's so fun in this in this super skinny water because you can see the fly you can see the fish react to it it's a whole game there's a couple other guides and I fish with a lot of pretty awesome guides and guides are there at the top of their sport and some of them you know you can get a little bit like know it just like this or like that or you know it's not at all like that we both are just do to do okay yep yep and you know there's a lot of stuff that doesn't even have to be said because he knows I know at the same time and it's like yep got him yeah so I've never had any of that you know fish was robbed so far so but you never know yeah you know this is only kind of fishing I think that the guy on the back it's almost just as rewarding car cuz you get to see the whole game I get to see you make the cast and talk that fish in the bitin I mean people are always you know when you go fishing every day yeah cool it's cool for me in the back of the boat good job brother that was awesome to watch you know man that fish just appeared he never tailed you just saw a little hint of orange pop up out of the grass a glove yeah after job man thanks man Co let's find another one let's do it [Music] when picking any fly for any situation you have to look at your surroundings because these redfish bury their heads in the grass when they're feeding along you need to fly that will get down to their level but not bury itself in the grass it's important that you pick the right fly with the right size eyes for the right sync rate for the situation holding for fish and sight fishing situations in shallow water you have to be conscious that the boat displaces water the faster you pull this ring of awareness gets further and further away from the boat that's the time to slow down ease the boat into position you'll find you get a lot more happy shots and happier fish there's this pale dish right there we were pointing very subtle a little bit right come right there just wait on these I see him there Adam came over that look at him ahh look at him ahh look at all the fish flowing nice seat come over shoulder and just tomahawk love it leave to the back and be back and I yes yes there better fish than he looked in the water there's such a willing participant do you know right yep they alive they do very user let's see how how much you like to fly Oh God yeah these things are nice gadgets for this perfect for this [Music] [Applause] [Music] absolutely positively the hardest part of being a guide and being a guide that's on the water a lot and being a guy that does some traveling is family and there's lots of lots of things you miss and and a family with I have a ten-year-old daughter so it's not just a grown grown woman or wife that I have to deal with not being there at times but with with the kid it's it's definitely the hardest part of my job you know not the weather not the fighting in the fish not the tons of days in a row but you know taxing more emotionally than than anything with family you know it's always a tug-of-war I haven't really caught one yet but my dad cast them and it's a hard life to have with family but but it's doable but certainly there's lots of lots of challenges there you're just you're just not there a lot of the times [Music] really what does it for me for redfish is seeing that fish super shallow or seeing his tail you know you're you're poking along trying to be real quiet making zero noise you're trying not to be there whatsoever sticks his tail up or one one shows his back on the shoreline or something really visual that's that little wolf of adrenaline you get the more visual it is the better it is absolutely I think everybody would agree with that way to go brother that was so fun to watch [Music] getting the grass trying to break it off wait man that's Louch something different [Music] I'm actually a sizeable fish for that skinny of water exactly a mad I mean look how shallow it pretty cool it was fun to watch I'll tell you that yeah that's awesome way to go thanks buddy [Music] byebye baby stop your shirt a day of fishing with a buddy like with David up here am i here to have fun and enjoy everything absolutely right here to have David show me his world and just soak it all up and enjoy the time with him absolutely when I get up on the bow am i competitive about my casting and how many fish I catch compared to him you damn right on him I'm competitive as hell it's just who I am and you know what I think whether he admits it or not he is too [Music] [Music]
