This is why I make as much as my own food as possible. Processed food is addicting for me. I just want to keep eating it. Same with salty food. The more salt on it, the harder it is to stop. I can eat unsalted peanuts in moderation. Salted peanuts, not so much.
Slightly off topic but I had to turn it off because the audio & visuals of people eating food was too much for me. It made me want to pull my hair out and throw the computer across the room. Completely irrational, I know, but I can't be the only one who has this reaction to people chewing food with their mouths open. And it was so unnecessary! There was no reason the media department at the National had to make this episode so annoying and disgusting to watch!
Ugghh. I'm still like... strangely angry. And I swear, I'm not normally prone to anger. I need to like, walk it off...
Another facet of the problem is that not only is the food designed to be addictive, it's also being pushed on us constantly. All the ads, logos around town, junk food at every register in every kind of store, so whenever you're in a situation that lowers your willpower, you will probably also have multiple images of junk food in your field of vision and be within a few hundred metres of a place you can buy some.
The register junk food aisle strikes me as particularly manipulative. I wonder if there will ever be a successful push to do something about it. I could easily imagine people in the future looking back on it with the same sort of disgust as we do on cigarette advertising methods now.
I'd recommend reading the book Salt, Sugar, Fat that's mentioned. It's really eye-opening to get an understanding of what is happening.

I guess that doesn't sound as sinister. They guy literally said "crackers without salt tasted like crap"! Yeah, no shit. Lots of food tastes like crap without salt or other seasonings.
I read Salt, Sugar, Fat and now I just side-eye Kraft and Nabisco all day.
I still eat Oreos and cheese and stuff, but I do make a concerted effort to actually notice what Iām consuming.
The science is super interesting but kinda fucked. It's no wonder people push the raw food and organic movement as the only way to lose weight. Celery isn't going to fuck with your brain chemistry.

Portions at restaurants and prepackaged food have exploded in size over the last fifty years.
But but.. it's the diet industry that is a corporate ploy to get you to buy more and fall into the consumerism trap! /s
