[Music] [Music] i have created this bible tower to give you a sense for the dimensions of this bible we'll be reviewing today this is skyler's rsv quintel revised standard version this is a full yap edition with the deutero deuterocanonical slash apocryphal books the next bible up is an rl allen new revised standard version they call this the nrsv1 it's also a goatskin bible like the schuyler this is the new revised standard version new oxford annotated bible 5th edition and at the top is the old revised standard version new oxford annotated bible with the apocrypha so all four of these bibles essentially have the same contents [Music] all right so i'll move these out of the way so we can take a look at this new skylar quintel in the new revised in the revised standard version rather goatskin cover this is a full yap edition so the app actually covers over the text block has a tool line that essentially gives you the edge of the text block indicates it on the cover six rays hubs here on the cover the dimensions this uh goat skin bible goat skin with a calf skin liner are 10 and a half inches tall 6 and 15 17 inches wide so it's almost 7 inches wide i measured it at a raised hub too by the way and it is 1 and 9 16 inches thick here at the spine measured with a micrometer on the inside the text is laid out in two columns each column is 64 millimeters wide there are around 44 characters per line and about 48 lines of text per column probably only 47 here but in places where you have fewer references i've found as many as 48 lines of text and a column the page dimensions are 232 millimeters in height and 155 millimeters wide so that's 9.1 inches tall 6.1 inches wide the margins at the top of the page from the top of the text to the edge of the page it's about 12 to 14 millimeters the inner margin is narrow it can be as much as 12 millimeters the outer margin all these margins are narrow is about eight to nine millimeters and um at the bottom below the bottom edge of the references there is eight to thirteen millimeters i would characterize the print as sharp moderately bold and dark there is some non-uniformity and we're on page 415 now if i pull over page 413 you'll see the range of darkness that you're likely to encounter considerably lighter on the left than on the right we find a similar thing going on here on page 607 if i bring over 605 you can see the variation there in darkness darker on the right than on the left and here again this is page 667 if i pull 665 in front you'll see that 665 is a shade lighter than 667. sometimes the variation in darkness is visible on a single page this is page 373 this may not be visible to the camera but to the naked eye the print is darker up in the upper portion of the page and gets lighter as one goes down and then it gets lighter over to the lower right the font and the text when i compare to times new roman the capital letters like this r are comparable to times new roman nine point the lower case letters are more like a ten and a half point times new roman the advertised font size here is ten points it's called a milo font i measured the line height the distance between baseline to baseline and i get 4.14 millimeters which is 11.7 points that excess that difference between the font size of 10 point and the line height of 11.7 is what gives you this very easy relaxed line spacing appearance you don't you don't have a sense that the lines are crammed together at all there's quite a lot of space between a descender and an ascender of the following line for instance the text is definitely line matched you can see where the print on the following page is lined up with the lines of print here on this page the added words in the revised standard version are not an italic type in the words of christ we're looking here at john 14 so christ is speaking as chapter 14 begins and as you see the words of christ are in black ink as should also be clear the revised standard version does not capitalize pronouns for deity the rsv quintel has page bottom references they are in a font that's around eight points and serif capitals when compared to times new roman are quite a bit smaller than that this is my estimate based on the lowercase letters i was curious as to how these compared to the references in the nelson 1971 revised standard version and i think as you'll be able to see they aren't really very close the nelson references at 1 3 are romans 1 8 through 9 acts 24 14 and 16 acts 23 1 first timothy 1 15 and 3 9 and you have a rather different set here 1 3 romans 1 8 9 first thessalonians 1 2 acts 20 37. they are very similar to those that you find in the new revised standard version but the new revised standard version references have errors in them for instance it talks about first thessalonians 1 2 and 1 21 well there aren't 21 verses in first thessalonians and then on 1 7 it has a reference to romans 18 15. that should be 8 15. it would be interesting to find the lost chapters of romans that get us up to 18 chapters so i believe the references down at the bottom are from the new revised standard version but they're corrected the rsv quintel also has text and translation notes they're in the lower portion of the outside column and they are in about an 8.5 point font estimated the same way as before one of the things i really like here is the fact that you can read backwards you can come along and just read this section and find out say where gehenna is mentioned in the old nelson revised standard version which i showed you a minute ago you'll find gehenna mentioned and then a k you'll just have to go up in the text and find the three places where the greek is gehenna whereas here you don't have to search it tells you where those occur 5 22 5 29 and 5 30. there are no book introductions and each book begins on a fresh page so there's second peter we saw james a moment ago and first john begins on a fresh page we'll get to second john as soon as i can grasp a piece of paper second john and third john on separate fresh pages typically one finds the book titles in the outside top along with the page contents and then the page number is on the inside near the gutter there are no headings running across the top of the page as you might be used to finding in the revised standard version from the old days there are no headings in the text either chapter numbers are large and red placed between the two chapters and they are bordered by olive branches at least i think these are supposed to be olives and olive branch does have alternate leaves like that each chapter begins with an ornamental drop cap there's an l it spans about four lines of text each verse except for the first verse in the chapter has a raised numeral like so they're rather small they're not all that easy to find quotations from the old testament are not marked in a special way like the new american standard version the legacy standard bible put them in all caps and i believe the csb puts them in bold all the revised standard version does is the normal english practice of using quotation marks and of course the sources for those quotations are in the references below let's talk a bit about the paper i measure the sheet thickness at 31.8 micrometers that allows me to estimate the paperweight at 29 gsm the advertised paperweight is 28 gsm so i'm very happy with my estimate the paper has a very light sheen it's not there's not very much glare i think you can see some right through here but it's certainly not disturbing at least to me it's very nearly white i detect a light cream color to it there is show through as you can see if you look in the gaps there but because of the line matching and because the print is relatively dark i do not find it distracting in this bible after the book of revelation which is here we come to a separately numbered section the book of revelation ends with page 1299 and of course they're numbering the apocryphal deuterocanonical book section separately because there are editions of this bible that do not include this portion and here's the table of contents for that section for those of you who think the most important consideration is the contents so we have the catholic deuterocanonicals plus those considered canonical by the orthodox plus a couple of other books that are included in some traditions like second estrus and four maccabees after this section of additional books one comes eventually to an nrsv can concise glossary in concordance it's 63 pages long and three columns in an approximately 8.5 point font with the words that are being defined in red text just out of curiosity i looked up a name or two from the books of maccabees so here's lysius the guardian the son of antiochus epiphanes whom the king appointed his viceroy in syria and then it references back to frist maccabees and regarding toba nrsv concise glossary in concordance says that he was a fictional jew of the dispersion so we should be in near the end of the glossary in concordance now and we come to the schuyler bible maps and we have 12 color maps that span 16 pages they are not on glossy paper this is a matte heavier paper heavier than the bible paper unfortunately they do under the gutter so here you can see the gutter so in the gutter perhaps you can see those threads and demonstrate that this is definitely a sewn binding and leave three of the maps under the gutter but the lack of glossiness helps people who like to write on their maps right on them so here's one you have to pry it open to be able to see certain geographical territories at the end of that we come to the index to maps it's three pages and four columns the font size is roughly six and a half points it's a sans-serif font and you're at the end of the bible proper the book text block is surrounded by these heavier pieces of cardstock and we come to the edge lined construction you can see how the book is tabbed in here the cupboard is tabbed into the text block this way the liner is red calf skin so here you can see the red headband now we'll turn the book over you should be able to make out the red tail band there kind of hidden by the red ribbons there are three ribbons each ribbon marker is about 10 millimeters wide and i measured them to be 34 centimeters long and they're certainly long enough to come out at the corners and to be useful this way the cover as we mentioned is about black goat skin fully app we have six rays hubs there is red under gold art guilting and i don't see any issues with the art guilty on this cover at all it seems to be very nicely done binding is sewn it does lie open in genesis i'll pull it here and you can see it does fly open early on get past the preface so this is genesis chapter 10 there is something of a curved effect here and as you get towards the center of the book you may have to adjust the text because it does drop off gently into the gutter but it's not a great drop off i mentioned this because those of us who have older eyes with magnifying lenses in our glasses we have shallow depths of focus typically but again this although the inner margin is very narrow only a slight adjustment is needed to flatten the page so that you can read easily if we go to the beginning of the book we see again tabbed in edge line construction let me zoom out a bit and we come to cardstock the presentation page marriages births and deaths and the half leaf [Music] and this gives you a sense for the show through i think so here's the jerusalem cross you can read containing the old and new testaments with the apocryphal deuterocanonical books drew this 28 gsm paper but it's reasonably opaque and again the darkness of the font or the general darkness of the font and the line matching really does help here's the copyright page the revised standard version cross references are from friendship press used by permission and again i think those are the nrsb cross references corrected they are certainly not the old nelson cross references printed and bound by royal youngblood this is typesetting by 2k denmark and copyright 2015 for the maps table of contents all the usual books of the old testament and new testament and then the apocryphal deuterocanonical books that those of you who are you are used to using the revised standard version or the new revised standard version new oxford annotated bible are used to seeing these books are typical for ecumenical bibles such as the revised standard version and the new revised standard version new oxford annotated bibles then you come to the preface to the revised standard version which runs for several pages it appears to be in about the same 10-point font this is used in the bible then we come to this the books the bible in alphabetical order and the abbreviations used for them it does not give you the page numbers for them however and then finally before we come to the old testament uh the books and old and in the notes to the books of the old testament the following abbreviations are used so vg is vulgate tg is targum here we are at the old testament and you can see the ornamental drop cap for genesis 1 here and there we are at genesis 1. a viewer of my unboxing video made a comment on that video to point out that there's a typo here in the book of ecclesiasticus also known as sirac in the prologue despite out diligent labor and translating of course that should be our so this looks like an ocr an optical character recognition error i found one after that myself and i'll show that to you so this error is in first maccabees chapter 2 verse 24 when matthias saw it be burned with zeal and his heart was stirred so of course an h and a b are very similar and that's i think as an ocr issue as the other one was so we'll do a few font comparisons here we have the revised standard version new oxford annotated bible on the left and now on the left is the new revised standard version new oxford annotated bible on the left here you see the new revised standard version one from rl allen on the left now is the much lighter printed half a point or so smaller new american standard bible wide margin quintile also by skylar and finally i brought in on the left the schuyler canterbury i believe this is an 11 point milo font and again in this case the canterbury is printed much more lightly than the new rsv con quintel i greatly prefer the font to the right to that over to that on the left so in case i've neglected to show the box in this video this is it it's a clamshell box it opens on the left it's easy to use helpful for storing the bible i'll just briefly show my normal contingent of charts about the translation the revised standard version which is really one of my favorite translations here on the translation continuum chart you see that the revised standard version is a little less literal than its descendant the english standard version in terms of old testament departures from the masoretic text i haven't looked at the 1971 revised standard version but i'm sure it's very close to the revised standard version second catholic edition that you see here and it's sort of in the moderate range it does not depart from the masoretic nearly as often as the new revised standard version which you see there near 50 in terms of its character textual basis for the new testament these are the typical scatter plots that i show with this one has nestle hollande on the y-axis the vertical axis and robinson pure pond on the x-axis the revised standard version from 1971 doesn't correlate to either of these very closely if you look at the similar chart with a west cotton hort on the y-axis and robinson pierpont on the x you see it's around the 60 61 percent agreement with west cottonwort 37 38 with robinson pure pond in terms of tindle house of course that predates dental house by quite a lot but revised standard version from 1971 is around the middle of the pack and if we put west cotton hort on the x-axis rather than robinson pierpont it essentially does a mirror image of the chart at least a large extent and the revised standard version shows its agreement with west cottonwort not not in any case as strong as the new american standard bible versions but still relatively strong amongst this pack of translations i think it's very nice to be able to have a premium edition of the revised standard version with all the ecumenical books in it the other option that you have really is the revised standard version new oxford annotated bible which doesn't have all the references that they've added here and um it in esther i just wanted to point this out the additions to the bulk of s there are printed and it but it doesn't include the base text that the additions append to so here at the break between the section from chapter 12 and the edition from chapter 13 it uh just has a note esther 1 1-3 13 follows here in the greek whereas in this quintel after we come to this edition from 12 we actually have the material 1 1 to 3 13. so there's the end of 313 and then you have edition b chapter 13. so all of that material is just referenced by a note and the new oxford annotated bible revised standard version of course here you do miss out on the page bottom notes that you get from the noaab [Music] another difference between the revised standard version quintel and the revised standard version new oxford annotated bible is the arrangement of the books so these are arranged in a way that's similar to i think it's the same as in the new revised standard version the old rsv and oab had first and second esdras at the beginning of the list so these have segmented them in terms of canonicity and if you look in the table of contents this is a cambridge new revised standard version with apocrypha you see that the order is the same as in the revised standard version quintel the first set of books and additions to esther and daniel that are in the roman catholic greek and slavonic bibles that takes you through second maccabees and then the next group first esdras the prayer of manassas psalm 151 and three maccabees are in the greek and slavonic bibles and not in the roman catholic canon then the second esdras is in the sylvanic bible in the latin vulgate appendix and then finally fourth maccabees is in an appendix to the greek bible for those of you who are interested in corner work i'm going to show you the corners if i can possibly arrange to do so these are my copies corners on the front cover and we'll go to the back this is very nice work i think it's a bit tricky to get that over there you can see also the line of stitching i believe along the boundary of the goatskin cover and the gold edge line on the inside of the calfskin cover [Music] and there's the jerusalem cross and the tooled line that we mentioned earlier [Music] so it's about time for a summary it's a beautiful premium bible it feels fantastic in the hands zone binding gentle leather cover very flexible [Music] decent set of maps interesting concise concordance that actually covers the apocryphal books that are included in the volume you have all these revised standard version translations of the apocryphal deuterocanonical books that otherwise are only available in the revised standard version new oxford annotated bible generally in a nice large typically dark font it's easy to read in terms of negatives i would say the paper is a bit on the thin side but i think it's sufficiently opaque the font is usually dark but it fades a bit from place to place i think for instance we just saw a lighter page here opposite a darker page here so the print isn't quite as even as i would have liked um we've been made aware of the fact that there are typos there are typos in the apocryphal deuterocanonical works i do don't know if there are typos in the other 66 books or not that's something to keep an eye open for the ornamental drop caps are very nice but we don't have any headings at all which we're used to with the revised standard version those typically would be placed at the top of the pages all in all i'm very happy with it it's very expensive i would prefer myself not to have a horizontal arrangement of references i find that difficult to use i much prefer a vertical arrangement of references just like i prefer a vertical arrangement of context lines in a concordance but this is easier i think to design the page and it allows you to have wider text columns which means it's easier to arrange the text in such a way that you don't have breaks you don't have words spread very far apart simply simplifies the problem of text arrangement still i would greatly prefer center column references and narrower columns myself but i can live with this and i do like it an awful awful lot i think it's very nice buyable and it may be a worthwhile choice for you certainly if you're interested in a premium revised standard version with the apocryphal and deuterocanonical books this is your option well i've said all i have to say thanks very much for watching remember to like the video if you did like it subscribe to the channel if you're so inclined you're certainly welcome to share this video with your friends on social
