the rise and fall of mars hill um i don't know if you've heard of this podcast um it seems like people are talking about it at least in in my world um it is the most fascinating podcast that i've listened to in a while um i don't listen to a ton of podcasts that's actually not saying that much but um just thought i would share my completely unprofessional opinion about it i have no credentials that give me the right to speak on this but um i followed mars since i was a christian how old was i i was like 18 when i first heard mark driscoll yell at me it actually changed my life so i have a little bit of a bias here because i podcasted uh driscoll and the whole deal and i was i was in it young restless reform the whole deal and it changed the trajectory of my life uh the ministry of mars hill so um it's very interesting to listen to this podcast and it's done by christianity today christianity today mike cosper he's written a few books i really liked and i didn't know he was with ct it's easier to say that um but i guess he is so i'm a little suspicious because christianity today is a big mega whatever and they've never done anything that's relevant or interesting to me but this is interesting and um kind of bums me out that they run ads during it i don't know i'm just kind of skeptical of big big things so i was i was uh excited that kosper did it but then i found out you know it was done by the whatever i don't know you can get over that if you want to but it's really well done kosper is a good storyteller he um tells the narrative and kind of asks good questions and gets you thinking and it's more it's more than just about mars obviously it's a it's an examination of christian church culture where it's at today um and i think it's very helpful to listen to whether you like it or don't like it um i think it's insightful in a lot of ways obviously it's more focused on the negative the first episode's called who killed mars hill um and uh it's it's just it's fascinating it's hard to listen to without crying sometimes um because if you were part of it or if you watched it from a distance like me there's a lot wrapped up in it like it's a lot of it's how i got saved and why i pulled my pants up became a man got a job got married had kids like i did the i did the vision that was there and it's a beautiful way to live and i'm grateful for it but also like some of the stuff that he gets into and the stories that are told i was like wow i did not know that was going on um and so it makes you ask like is this what church should be how do we contribute to this as church goers and how does church become about one man's platform and drawing people to hear one person talk like is that the vision of the church and what jesus wanted for his people um so thought-provoking stuff i recommend everyone listen to it and make your own opinions about it um but for me some of the big takeaways are just like this idea of celebrity culture and how that's unhealthy and not good for the body of christ as we're supposed to be humble servants and pastors should be pastors not leaders or personalities or influencers or whatever you call them um their job is to pray and love people and help give spiritual direction so that's what i would hope for in a church um but yeah this it gets your the wheels turning and it helps to name a lot of different things that are kind of happening that are hard to put a finger on like why is this weird um and so for me i was a part of a church worked for a church wasn't as big as mars or as um blatant but like a lot of the same spirit and the same undergirding is there um and so right now i'm at the the last episode i listened to was uh i kissed christianity goodbye which is joshua harris that's the last one that's come out while i'm recording this and um it really the whole podcast kind of just flows and talks about the death of mars hill and kind of the history of mega church which is a really interesting episode um and then women in the church and the brand and all of that and so he takes lots of different stabs at this same thing to kind of understand like what what happened and so for me the question is like do you throw the baby out with the bathwater because that's kind of the the danger of this deconstructiony thing is that you just ditch the whole thing because the model is so destructive or it has destructive parts but also good parts like do you just go to church because it's a necessary evil to be in relationship with people where you can encourage people and love each other um you have to listen to a 45 minute sermon to get the rest of the good stuff or is there anything good there do you just dump it all is there no baby in the bathwater is it is it a turd and toilet water should you just flush it like what do we do um and that's something that i've struggled with and asked questions about and like what is what is good about the church and what is necessary for following jesus and how do we do it faithfully and a lot of a lot of questions to ask and i have uh zero answers so if you're looking for answers here not happening but um i know mike kosper is hoping to encourage people to follow jesus still he's not like what's his face joshua harris who's like not a christian and trying to help people to deconstruct christianity um so i i think it's a generally positive podcast get you thinking um and uh and encourage you in your walk with jesus and help to kind of pull away some of the extra junk that doesn't need to be there um and it definitely gives voice to people's stories who have been silenced and not platformed is that a word not spoken about so i appreciate that helps to give clarity to my own thoughts when i hear other people's thoughts i'm like yes that's a that's the thing that's true like that's that's happening so uh give it a listen or don't i don't care i'm just telling you what i think so bye
