many NBA players who used to be considered decent or even pretty good are now out of the league and they might be playing in Europe or Asia or not playing basketball at all in this video I'm gonna talk about some different players who fell out of the NBA for all different kinds of reasons alright let's get started I'm gonna start off with some recent players first and I'm gonna also talk about some older players with unique situations one of the most common reasons why some players are out of the league is kind of simple drugs and alcohol a couple of recent examples include Lamar Odom OJ Mayo and Ty Lawson when people have a ton of money they have an easier time feeding their addiction Odom got traded by the Lakers in 2011 and he saw his life go into a downward spiral after that he became addicted to cocaine and was hospitalized multiple times from overdoses nowadays he seems to be doing better but he cites his cocaine addiction as the reason why his NBA career ended the way it did it killed his motivation to workout and stay in shape and as a result he was out of the league two seasons after he won six Man of the Year in 2011 on the other end of the spectrum Oh Jay Mayo situation is a bit different the NBA actually banned him after he was caught doing hard drugs meth cocaine heroin LSD Mayo was on everything he could still appeal and try to get reinstated in 2018 but there's a chance he could never come back to the NBA Ty Lawson has had problems with his alcohol addiction for years now and he was arrested for DUI four times in three years it clearly had a negative impact on his NBA career as he's only 29 years old right now but now he's playing in China next we're gonna take a look at a player who's out of the league simply because he wasn't good enough anymore Josh Smith actually he probably fits into the category of players who were ruined because people started paying attention to analytics he played on the Hawks for the first nine years of his NBA career and he was a solid player he was a jack-of-all-trades type of player offensively and defensively he was great because of his solid play Smith signed a four-year 50 or million dollar contract with the Detroit Pistons but then they realized he wasn't that good and waved him just one year later his numbers looked good on paper but his efficiency was awful and he was holding the team back in the 2013 to 14 season Smith had a true shooting percentage of forty six point three percent which was by far the lowest out of any player who took at least 15 shots per game and he also had a negative plus-minus rating he was a black hole offensively and stunted the development of their young players after getting waived by the Pistons Smith bounced around a few teams got very few minutes and his career was pretty much done however he did have a brilliant moment in the 2015 playoffs when he was with the Rockets he randomly unleashed a three-point barrage which led to an insane comeback in Game six as the Houston Rockets came back from being down three to one against the Clippers he was a huge reason why Houston made it to the Western Conference Finals that year but yeah he was still out of the league shortly after that recently in 2016 he signed a contract with the city on blue whales in China and as of right now it looks like his NBA career is over another reason why some players are out of the league is because their egos are just way too big Jimmer Fredette and Latrell Sprewell are both good examples of this Jimmer was one of the greatest college players in NCAA history winning the 2011 National Player of the Year award and even being acknowledged by Barack Obama as the best scorer in the country but unfortunately his NBA career hasn't worked out too well according to a report in 2015 right after Jimmy got cut from the Spurs it was said that Jimmer ziggo was through the roof he apparently thinks everybody is stupid and the offense needs to run through him so he can shoot the ball anytime he wants to but I guess nobody else thought so so he's out of the NBA now but at least he's been dominating in China averaging some ridiculous numbers there Latrell Sprewell on the other hand was already an established player in the league the problem was he thought he deserved way more money than what he was actually offered the Timberwolves offered him a three-year 21 million contract extension in 2004 which is a nice contract considering that he was like 34 years old but Sprewell felt insulted by that he expressed his outrage with his famous quote I have a family to feed apparently 7 million a year wasn't enough to feed them and Sprewell wasn't willing to accept such a low offer other teams tried to sign him but he thought that those offers were too low as well so he ended up falling out of the NBA just because he could not swallow his pride now let's take a look at some other interesting situations this is Josh Childress the number 6 pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks he played through his rookie contract until 2008 and then he was about to resign with them on a five-year 33 million dollar deal however at the last moment a basketball team from Greece swooped in and offered him a 3-year 20 million dollar contract and at first glance these two contracts seems similar paying him about 7 million a year but because of tax breaks from playing overseas the 20 million dollars was after taxes so it was the equivalent to 32 million before taxes so Childress was essentially offered 3 years 32 million to play in Greece which is a lot better than five years 33 million from the Hawks this was enough money to convince Childress to go play in Europe for a few years before coming back another interesting case is Larry Sanders he was in the middle of his prime with them Milwaukee Bucks but then all of a sudden he decided to walk away from the sports Sanders talked about his struggles with anxiety and depression and his mental health issues were larger than basketball he had to enter a rehabilitation center to get psychiatric treatment mental health is a huge issue that doesn't get talked about that much in sports and it's a topic that many people need to understand and be aware of so it's great that Sanders was able to open up about this situation and do what's best for himself and a few years later it looks like he's feeling better he recently played a few games with the Cavs in the 2016 - 7 teen season and he's still in the middle of making a comeback to the NBA alright guys those are pretty much the main reasons why certain players end up leaving the NBA whether it's a drug addiction that ruins their career or gets them banned or egos that held them back or maybe they just can't play as well as before all of these situations are unique in their own way some players like Stephon Marbury for example left the NBA relatively early but he was able to go overseas to China and revitalize his image and end up having tremendous success and some other players just aren't that motivated to play basketball because they see basketball as nothing more than a job that pays the bills thanks for watching guys don't
